SanDisk Extreme Ducati Edition - Flash memory card - 4 GB - CompactFlash Review

SanDisk Extreme Ducati Edition - Flash memory card - 4 GB - CompactFlash

I'm useing this card in a Canon 40d which bursts at 6.5 frames a second. Shot 142 pix (jpg) before I stopped shooting. I'm not sure how many frames past that it would have gone before slowing down or stopping to await the transfer from the camera buffer to the card. Fast downloads to the computer as well.
Highly recommend this cards if you need to shoot in the 'burst' speed mode. If you don't shoot a lot of action in busts mode, save your $$$ and get the Extreme III card. Also highly recommended

Kingston Elite Pro 32 GB 133x CompactFlash Memory Card CF/32GB-S2 Review

Kingston Elite Pro 32 GB 133x CompactFlash Memory Card CF/32GB-S2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this card for my Canon 7D DSLR and it's video mode (1080p). Since the camera consumes about 4GB per 12 minute clip, this card is good for around 48 minutes of 1080p 30/24 or 720p 60 video. The card appears fast enough to keep up with the high bitrate capture of the 7D's video mode. Be warned, however, it is not fast enough for continuous (high-speed) JPEG and/or JPEG-RAW capture. The 7D can be a speed demon at up to 8fps at full resolution. I also have Sandisk Extreme III cards (30MB/s) and they are noticeably faster. I can fill the buffer with the Kingston card, but not the Sandisk.
That said, this card is about 1/2 the price of the Sandisk Extreme, and since I mainly wanted the card for HD Video capture, it performs up to my expectations. I've also had a 16GB version of this card for over a year and used it with my Canon 50D with no issues.
I have NOT experienced any data corruption issues with this 32GB card or the 16GB card I've had for over a year. I would not hesitate in buying another one and plan on it very soon.

I tested this on my D200 and it works as described. Half a press and it focuses and the full press releases the shutter. The bulb function works well too. Some reviewers noted that it was difficult to line up the 10 pin connector to the camera. Careful inspection of the camera receiver and the shutter release connector and you will notice three slots in the camera receiver that line up with three plastic prongs in the connector. The cord leaving from the connector on the shutter release on the unit I received lines up with the white dot/line on the D200 receiver/connector. Not sure if this is a design feature or not, but it will help me line up the 10 pin connector.
All in all, I feel like this was a good buy for the money if it lasts.

I decided to save some money on Nikon accessories and I purchased this Satechi remote shutter as a result. The unit has a two-stage button just like the exposure button on the camera. It has a nice tactile feel so you can't accidentally hit the exposure if all you want to do is focus. The down side is that the connector has no threaded ring. It is held on by a compression fit. It is quite snug, so it will not easily fall off if the camera is moved around. My D300 has a white alignment dot next to the connector but the Satechi connector does not. So I made a mark on the connector with a white permanent ink marker. Works great! Nice investment if you want to save money.

Solid quality with a small price compared to NIKON MC-30. It is handy for reducing camera shake on super telephoto shots, macro-photography, and bulb exposures. Pressing the shutter button halfway enables auto-focusing; pressing the shutter button all the way down releases the shutter. Lock the button for long exposures or continuous shooting. Camera Armor Protective Case for Nikon D300/D300S (Black) Review

Camera Armor Protective Case for Nikon D300/D300S (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros:
Grip
Quality Feeling
Cons:
Bulky
Heavy (10 oz)
Not weather sealed
Shows dust
Bottom Line:
I question how much protection the product really offers, and it adds a lot of bulk/weight to the camera. The camera is 30 oz (empty), adding this adds another 10 oz on top of that, or 33%. As far as impact protection goes it does offer a lot on the bottom, but not much elsewhere. The issue is the bottom probably needs the least protection as this is generally a protected area anyway. The flash insert is sort of creative and would likely offer some protection.
As another reviewer mentions too, I would be afraid to get dirt in around the armor and actual abraid the case worse than otherwise, how the old vinyl car bras (front end protectors) are worse than not having them on for the same reason.
The lens protector is nothing more than an expandable rubber hood. On the plus side is that it is easy to use, but be sure it will fit your lens, if the focus ring is near the end it won't work.
My favorite thing with the product is the very large and secure grip offered. It fits my large hands well. Would I buy one? Probably not. This product is all about the image offered, "look at my big tough camera".

Tenba 638-222 Small Messenger (Olive) Review

Tenba 638-222 Small Messenger (Olive)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So, what does it fit? Well here is what I have in mine currently:
Camera Portion (this padded portion is removable):
Nikon 80-200mm zoom lens
Tokina 12-24mm in Tamrac holster pouch
2x Wireless Flash Triggers
2x Wireless Flash Receivers
Wireless Camera Remote
SB-600 Flash
Foldable Flash Softbox
Nikon D70s w/ 24-75mm lens attached (the camera rests ontop of the Tamrac holster and padding which holds the wireless flash units)
Outside the Removable Camera Portion (but in the same bag compartment):
Lithium Battery Charger
Three Memory Cards
1x Lens Filter
Extra Lens Cap
With all of this, the bag is bulky. In fact, so much so that it bulges and I have yet to carry my MacBook in the Laptop Portion fearing that the bulging would damage the screen. The Laptop portion is well padded with about an inch of combined padding between the laptop and the camera gear. However, the padding is not rigid, so it succumbs to bulging. I'm planning on buying a Tom Bihn Brain Cell for the laptop. It is made with extremely rigid padding. I would then perform surgery on the bag, taking out the padding in the laptop portion as the Brain Cell would provide all the protection I would need and removing the extra padding would reduce weight and bulging. I'll edit this post when I go through with the transformation.
Great things about the bag:
1. Quick access zipper! No need to unbuckle the flap to get to the gear.
2. Extremely strong velcro on the flap.
3. Long buckle leashes allows me to sandwich a monopod in the flap (with a carabiner holding the monopod in place)
4. Anti-theft internal flap. Inside the bag, there is a flap (probably made for semi-rain protection) that you can wrap over the top of your camera gear and tuck in on the sides. Thus, if someone were to secretly unzip the Quick access zipper in an airport, and you had the flap tucked, they would just see a whole lot of nylon rip-stop material. It would be very difficult for them to get past that without you noticing.
5. Amazing shoulder strap with great grip. I have walked for two hours with this thing fully loaded, and while it caused some back pain, I felt no need to switch shoulders. Other bags I have used ended up digging into my shoulder. Not so with this well padded strap. Also the strap utilizes metal connecting parts, not plastic. So big plus.
6. Comfortable handle.
7. Lots of pockets and zippered portions. Many of them are very deep which could be a plus or a minus.
Not so great things:
1. Not enough space for safely carrying camera gear and laptop.
2. Camera Portion is not as customizable as I would have loved. But enough, that I like it.
Bottom Line:
While extremely useful and comfortable, this bag is not meant for a lot of gear or a long haul. Quick access, comfort, and modular design are big pluses. The excessive bulging negating the use of camera gear and laptop is a big minus. But, that may be fixed by adding a Tom Bihn Brain Cell.

I used the JC-36 GPS receiver on my Nikon D-300 camera for about 4 hours on a small airplane, once the GPS had a signal lock it didn't loose the signal despite being inside the airplane and despite maneuvering. It also did not drain the camera's main battery very much at all - as some external GPS receivers will do.
The only other thing that I could wish for is a compass that shows the direction of the picture.
My only slight criticism is that the GPS fits on the flash hot shoe but does not lock in and a couple of times it was bumped out.

This is the exact model of remote you can find for the Nikon D300 on Nikon's own site (and here on Amazon >> NIKON MC-36 Multi-Function Remote Cord ( 33.5 inches )). The only thing it is lacking is a Nikon logo emblazoned across it, which apparently makes about a $100 difference in pricing.
Why pay more?
It plugs in to your 10-pin adapter and can be screwed into place so it doesn't pop out on you, too. Works wonderfully and I look forward to really putting it through the motions. Very sturdy remote (unlike the wireless for the same price which looked as though it might fall apart in the mail!)
PLEASE NOTE: They appear to have changed the body style of this product (writing this as of November 2009). The one I bought had a bit more substance (it was longer). I haven't used the model currently advertised, so I couldn't answer whether the compacting of the remote would make it harder to keep a handle on.

The move to the Nikon D300 was made to take advantages of the newer features that were not present (especially the greater pixel capacity) in the D100 which I had for several years. It was time to move up.
The screen is larger with the ability to display additional information regarding exposure etc. The controls are neatly arranged and handle better than the D100 and it is more comfortable your hands. Auto focus and exposure metering are much more advanced over the D100.
While I am still very much in the "learn mode" with this camera I am satisfied the move was worth it. Having not moved to the D200 when it came out I cannot comment on the value of moving from that model to the D300.
I had shopped around on the web only to find multiple cases of much lower prices but they did not include the typical box items of the charger, battery etc. In this regard be careful of the lo-ball prices.

The Nikon D300 D-SLR offers 12.3 MP DX format CMOS sensor combined with a fast 6 fps (up to 8 fps with the optional Multi Power Battery Pack). The camera s fast power-up, quick response and outstanding flexibility will meet the needs of a wide variety of photographic assignments. The D300 also features a self-cleaning sensor unit, which vibrates at high frequencies to remove any loose dust on the surface of the sensor s optical low pass filter. The camera has a broad ISO range from 200-3200 plus Lo 1 (the equivalent of ISO 100) and Hi (ISO 6400 equivalent). Image accuracy is also enhanced by the Nikon Scene Recognition System, which uses the Nikon 1005-pixel RGB color sensor modified to recognize subjectsshape and position before the image is captured. This also aids the new 51-Point Autofocus system in tracking subjects, while enhancing the accuracy of exposure and white balance metering.

I was looking for a lense that would replace my nikkor 18-55mm lens. I wanted somthing around the same zoom range, and mabe with a little more reach if possible. I spent hours looking up reviews and asking questions all over the internet! I fnially came up on the sigma 17-70mm lense, which is the perfect range!! 17mm is pretty wide-angle and its great for pretty much anything like family group shots or senic shots. and the 70mm is great for macro photos of flowers, plants and bugs all the way down to portrait close up shots. and to make the lense even better, its macro!! you will not believe how close you can focus with this lense! it will blow you away!! it will also open up a new and different world of photography for you! the lense is also very very sharp, which was the most important thing for me in finding a lens.
Overall, i highly reccomend this lens!! its an awsome all-around lens thats well worth the money!! you will not regret spending aound $300 for it. once you try it, you will fully understand what im talking about! BUY IT!!

I am a technology geek. An early adopter. I also work in the outdoors, shooting wildlife photographs. I used to use film cameras, and unfortunately was spending far more money in developing costs than groceries! So I made the early move to digital with a little point n' shoot Olympus. Many times I was so frustrated that the camera was almost thrown overboard. Then came the Nikon D70, a digital SLR. I was hooked. I loved being able to shoot 6 MP shots, 3 frames a second. Being able to preview pics and throw away what I didn't want. But soon my D70 was looking long in the tooth so to speak, so I began researching and prowling around for a new camera. My boss also used to shoot a D70, and had just made the jump over to a Canon D40 as the lenses were cheaper. Me, I'm a pretty loyal guy, so I gave the D300 a hard look.

I looked at many websites and forums that compared the top DSLRs. And I kept coming back to the D300. Even Macworld gave it their recommendation, so I went online and bought a package that included a D300, a 70-300 VR lens, a 2GB card and shipping for 1999.99. The camera arrived, and here are a few observations after only a few days use:
1. This is a heavy camera. Very solid. Heavier than my D70, but the weight is balanced feeling.
2. SPEED!!! Wow! I am using a Lexar 2GB 300x card, and when I hit burst rate the other day, I shot nearly 13 frames in about 2-3 seconds.
3. LCD display is incredible! At 3" in size, it really enables you to get a good feel for how the camera is operating. Live View is a new feature for when you are using a tripod or having to hold the camera at strange angles---it seems to really work well.
4. In camera processing---some features that I used to wait to process in Photoshop I can do in the camera now (red-eye reduction, etc.) Very helpful.
Now for the things I don't like (which is a very short list at this point):
1. Getting CF cards that really take advantage of the camera's lightning speed are expensive!
2. Lenses for this camera are expensive!
3. Owner's manual leaves something to be desired in explaining how to use the camera.
I am an intermediate user, and so I feel a bit lost trying to figure out all the options of this camera and how to best utilize them. But fortunately for you and me, there are lots of books, websites, etc, to help you take this Ferrari and use it to its' fullest extent! If I had to choose a camera again, I would DEFINITELY buy the Nikon D300 again.

Similar to the D3, the D300 features Nikon's exclusive EXPEED Image Processing System that is central to driving the speed and processing power needed for many of the camera's new features. The D300 features a new 51-point autofocus system with Nikon's 3D Focus Tracking feature and two new Live View shooting modes that allow users to frame a photograph using the camera's high-resolution LCD monitor. The D300 shares a similar Scene Recognition System as is found in the D3; it promises to greatly enhance the accuracy of autofocus, auto exposure, and auto white balance by recognizing the subject or scene being photographed and applying this information to the calculations for the three functions. 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Nikkor Zoom Lens The lens included with this kit offers a broad 18-200mm focal range for use in a variety of situations. It is equivalent to a 27-300 lens in the 35mm format. Its VR II system offers the equivalent of using a shutter speed 4 stops faster. Two ED glass and three aspherical lens elements minimize chromatic aberration, astigmatism, and other forms of distortion while ensuring high resolution and contrast. It employs a seven-blade rounded diaphragm opening that achieves a natural blur for out-of-focus elements, and it can focus from as close as 50 centimeters (20 inches) from the subject through its entire focal range. The lens also incorporates a SWM (Silent Wave Motor) for fast, quiet focusing, an M/A mode for rapid switching between autofocus and manual focus operation, and an internal focusing (IF) design for smoother focusing improved balance. What's in the box Nikon D300 digital SLR body, EN-EL3e rechargeable li-ion battery, MH-18a quick charger, UC-E4 USB cable, EG-D100 video cable, AN-D300 strap, BM-8 LCD monitor cover, body cap, DK-5 eyepiece cap, DK-23 rubber eyecup, Software Suite CD-ROM

I was very concerned about buying an off-brand grip because I worried about construction quality. I was inclined to buy the Nikon MB-D10, but at 3 times the price of the Zeikos, it didn't seem to be good value. Other positive reviews here persuaded me to give this Zeikos grip a try, and I couldn't be happier.
The Zeikos is mostly plastic (contrast that with the Nikon MB-D10's magnesium construction), but the grip is the same pleasant texture as the grip material on the D300. The unit screws into the tripod screw mount on the bottom of the camera. You remove the rubber seal on the camera bottom to expose the connectors, and Zeikos even thought to carve out a convenient storage nook for that rubber seal in the grip (it's that little angled section closest to the front of the product image), so it's right there when you decide to go for a shoot without the grip.
The fit is nice and tight, and does not feel like it will break.
I'm wedding and portrait photographer, and shoot some corporate events and the occasional car race. I use a D300 with this grip. For weddings, especially when using the large-ish 70-200mm f/2.8, this grip saves my arm, because I can shoot portrait shots without holding my arm over the top of the camera.
The D300 draws power from the battery in the grip first (edit: this is selectable in camera), and once that's depleted, it switches to the battery in the camera. This is great, because you can then charge the grip battery while continuing to shoot with the camera battery. (edit: if the grip has no battery, it does not function, regardless of the charge of the battery inside the camera body.) And the odds are good the battery from the grip will be fully charged well before you deplete the battery inside the camera.
It offers its own multi-selector right where your thumb will find it, so when you're shooting portrait, you can still easily adjust the focus point, review images, and work in menus without having to flip the camera around. One drawback: the multi-selector protrudes a bit and is easy to nudge accidentally with your finger, forehead, camera strap, etc. (edit: After using this grip for a year, I do find that I nudge the selector with my nose a lot. Not a big deal, but it does mean I have to reset the focus point from time to time.)
The Zeikos comes with 2 battery trays: one for an EN-EL3a (the standard battery that comes with the D300), and one for 8 AA batteries. Loading just an EN-EL3a doesn't boost frame rate. I haven't tried doing a full shoot with the AAs, but I did verify that using them gives the D300 a frame-rate boost when shooting in JPEG (the D300 can't shoot faster than about 3 fps in 14-bit RAW regardless of power source). I usually shoot in 14-bit RAW, so this isn't that valuable to me. Still, it's comforting to know I could power my D300 with just AA batteries in a pinch.
The unit also is technically able to accept the EN-EL4a battery, but requires a third battery bay cover, Nikon BL-3 Battery Chamber Cover for Nikon EN-EL4 and EN-EL4a for the MB-D10, which does not come with the grip. [Update: In October, 2010, I purchased this Nikon-brand cover-adapter for use with this Zeikos grip, after getting a used D3, since I now have EN-EL4a batteries and charger. Although the cover locks in place and functions with the grip, the fit is incorrect -- there's a gap at the front of the grip. I cannot find a Zeikos-brand cover-adapter for the EN-EL4a battery, so, although this match-up will work, I'm disappointed I can't purchase a cover-adapter for the Zeikos grip that offers a proper fit.] Nikon's MB-D10 also requires this sold-separately battery cover for this purpose. The EN-EL4a provides even longer life than the EN-EL3a, and also provides the frames-per-second boost for the D300 when shooting in JPEG or 12-bit RAW.
If you frequently shoot in portrait, want all-day battery life, or need the extra frame-rate boost, the Zeikos battery grip is an affordable, high-quality substitute for Nikon's MB-D10. It's plastic, not magnesium like the Nikon, but unless you're using your camera as a hammer, Zeikos' build quality is a great match for the D300/D700.
[Update: after a year, still works like a charm. No problems with mounting points, breakage, or malfunctions.]

Excellent addition to your D200 "tool kit". We used it extensively for a studio type shoot in 3 locations and it worked flawlessly for 1,700 exposures. Much better than depending on batteries in this situation
