(More customer reviews)I've had this lens for a few years now, and I absolutely love it. It is compact, sharp, and dependable. I'm a wide-angle shooter, so this one is just about perfect. Canon's USM is beautiful. Unlike Nikon, Canon seeks and achieves quiet, fast, and accurate auto focusing. Coupled with a light and quiet EOS camera body, and you've got an excellent documentary kit, great for shooting people in close and personal. At 24 mm, this lens gives excellent range for close work, with lots of depth and sharpness, making focusing and composing a cinch in evolving situations. My only gripe with this lens is its manual focus ring. I grew up with manual focus, and I love excercising that skill, but this lens has nothing more than an obligatory, plastic, and poorly placed focusing ring that discourages manual work. Fortunately, Canon's autofocusing system is phenomenal. Round-out your EOS kit with a Canon SpeedLite (compatible all the way down to 24 mm).

Tokina AT X235 AF PRO - Wide-angle zoom lens - 20 mm - 35 mm - f/2.8 - Canon EF Review

(More customer reviews)This lens is very well built. The construction quality is excellent, the focusing is silky smooth, and the photos are razor sharp. I have found a bit of chromatic aberration at full apertures and the lens is a bit softer also when wide open. Just stopping down to 3.5 seems to get rid of the CA and the lens sharpens right up, as well.
The lens is a little sluggish when focusing in very low light (i.e. situations requiring high ISOs and/or slow shutter speeds). This lens is VERY wide, so expect some typical wide-angle distortion. The distortion is very pleasing, not as much as a fish-eye and easily "correctable" using Photoshop if desired. I even created an action for it and it works flawlessly.
I used this lens on an Xti Body and a Elan IIe film camera (because I want full frame sometimes and can't afford the 5D). The photos were outstanding and the lens is VERY VERY wide on full frame.
Here is my brief analysis of this lens:
1) Nearly as good as the Canon L equivalent
2) Outstanding build quality
3) Use the lens hood in bright light or expect lens flares
4) Normal wide-angle distortion, no barrel distortion and nothing unpleasant
5) Very sharp images f/3.5 or smaller
6) Use high-quality filters only or expect flares
7) Silkiest focus ring I have ever used
8) Use manual focus for night shots or very low light

Great power, fast recycle, dependable... but it is small and light enough to attach to your camera body. That is much easier than a Turbo 2x2 on your shoulder. It has enough juice for most shoots, but it do not expect 300 shots at full power. A wedding would take a few of these small units. The one complaint is that it is hard to mount a bracket to the bottom of the battery. It mounts on the screw mechanism and makes the whole thing a bit wiggly. It works but... All in all a great unit for someone who does not use a bracket.

(More customer reviews)First, let me say this lens is one of my favorites. I own this lens for my Pentax PZ-1 and have read MANY reviews about it. The price is cheap. In fact, it's arguably the cheapest lenses in it's class. But don't mistake a cheap price as the sign of a bad lens. I use this lens for many occassions and at it almost always delivers GREAT pictures. Yes, it's not the single best lens in the world, but it is as good as many of the lenses I've used that are two or three times the price. Plus, if you break this one you can buy another without breaking your piggy bank ... or your credit card limit.
The two complaints most people make about this lens are, "It's a slow lens" and "It's almost impossible to focus manually." Let me put both those complaints to rest right now. First, when photographers refer to how "slow" a lens is, they don't mean how fast it can focus, they mean the F-stop setting. This lens is a F3.5-5.6. Granted, some expensive lenses at this focal length can go as low as F1.x, but most can't. And most experienced (and novice) photographers can use any lens that can go below F8. So, when people call this lens "slow," they should be talking about F-stops, not autofocus. I for one have found this lens to be more than fast enough for hand-held use. It's only been too slow once in about 1,000 shots.
Second, the focusing ring on this puppy is short. That means it's hard to focus manually. Still, that's to be expected on a smaller, cheaper lens such as this. Although it's tough to focus manually, it's not impossible. I've used manual focus on this lens several times and got great results ... just move the ring SLOWLY and you will get great manual focus. Nevertheless, keep in mind this IS an autofocus lens ... most people won't focus the lens manually. And on that note, the autofocus is spectacular.
Add in the macro ability of this lens and you've got one heck of a package! Oh, and don't forget ... It's CHEAP! If you can only afford one lens for your next vacation, make it this lens ... and use the $100+ you saved to buy more goodies.

Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM Telephoto Lens for Canon SLR Cameras Review

(More customer reviews)If you're looking at this lens, you're ready to spend some serious dollars. Is it worth it? Short answer, yes, but I'll elaborate.
I've shot with a variety of Nikon and Canon lenses for about 25 years. The 300 f/2.8L IS is without a doubt the sharpest lens I've ever had, and it is unbelievably consistent across every aperture. With the 1.4X Canon extender - other its becoming an f/4 lens - I could not see any appreciable change in its performance. Unbelievable.
I got my introduction to image stabilization on the 70-200 f/2.8L IS, and it is even more useful on the 300. I handheld consistently crisp shots at 1/60 and sometimes at 1/30. With my old Nikon 300 mm, anything below 1/250 was out of the question and 1/500 was a good idea. The whirring of the IS is a bit louder on the 300 than the 70-200.
When shooting action in AI Servo mode, the autofocus was as fast as on my shorter prime lenses.
In some forums, people swear by third party long lenses that they say produce as good an image at less than half the cost. All I can say is that their experience probably reflects the limitations of their skills rather than the comparability of the lenses.
With the 1.4X extender and my 1D Mark IIN's 1.3X FOVCF, this becomes a 546 mm lens. On a 1.6X FOVCF camera it's a whopping 672 mm.
Here are some other Canon alternatives and why you might want to go with them instead of the 300 f/2.8L IS:
- Canon 300 f/4L IS - less than half the price; it is lighter and has a built-in lens hood that doesn't require assembly; you lose a stop, and while a very sharp lens, not in same class at the f/2.8. good choice if you don't have the money for the f/2.8 or want to spread it among other lenses.
- Canon 400 f/2.8L IS - a longer reach without losing a stop but the price and weight increase significantly; not really hand-holdable; lens of choice for outdoor sports action.
- Canon 500 f/4L IS - if you want to shoot birds, you'll need the extra reach. It's cheaper than the 400 2.8 but a couple thousand more than the 300. Sharpness is comparable to the 300.
- Zoom lenses (70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS; 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS) Cheaper, lighter and more flexible but a serious compromise on image quality vs. 300 f/2.8L IS.
Best argument against the 300 f/2.8L is that you won't shoot often enough at that focal length or you want to buy more lenses for the money.
I'm saving my pennies now to add the 500 f/4L IS for bird and other wildlife distance shooting. It will take a few years.

(More customer reviews)This is a moderately priced alternative telephoto lens. Althought quite bulky, lens are not heavy, and they fit perfectly well in my LowePro Min-Trekker backpack.
Lens are not fast enought to take pictures without a tripod in less then bright light conditions, however, if you can afford a longer exposure times and tripod, you can get good results. Not suited for sports or fast animal photography, but if you want zoom into the landscape, architecture or people, here is a perfectly fine lens...There is really no good alternative lens if you need a range of 170-500 mm.

I have vivitar slr circa 1976 that still kicking. I think this filter will be just as tough. It has a durable matte black frame. It's made of actual glass and was about a third the price of a Hoya, B+W, or Tiffen. I bought another more expensive brand to compare it to and cannot find any difference.

-This lens produces very sharp pictures only if you have your camera on a tripod. With all lenses, the more zoom, the less area of view. Do not think you will be holding this lens in your hands shooting.
-This lens needs light. It works great outdoors. I have taken many shots of birds, houses, trees, ect)
Overall, it is the only lens under $600 that can zoom as far as it can. You just need to understand want it can and cannot do. I am happy with it.

(More customer reviews)First the lens itself is an excellent wide angle prime. Very sharp edge to edge even wide open. Virtually no flare. But it should not be bought for that purpose. The 14mm f2.8 is cheaper (at $2,000!) and faster. The 16 to 35mm f2.8 zoom is even cheaper and much more versatile. Also, this lens does not auto focus and has a big unprotected bulb in front that requires special care in handling.
What the lens does is produce wide angle shots that cannot be obtained from any other lens. In a normal wide angle, tilting the camera so it is not parallel to the ground makes the vertical lines tilt strongly open or closed. The more you tilt the camera, the stronger the effect. Sometimes you want that effect. It can enhance the height of things. But other times you don't. This lens offers the ability to control line tilt or eliminate it altogether. Set the camera so lines are all straight or tilted to the extent you want then shift the lens itself up, down or sideways to capture the desired field of view. The effect is amazing.
But that is not all. Because lines can be kept straight, shooting two or more shots by shifting the lens instead of the camera facilitates stitching multiple shots into very wide angle images. It is possible to get a shot wider than a fish eye lens with no linear distortion.
And that is still not all. The ability to tilt the lens helps depth of field. I won't try to explain the principle (there are plenty of sites on the internet that describe it) but with the camera on a tripod, it is possible to set the basic shot, shift the lens to the desired point, tilt the lens until everything is in focus up to within a very short distance from the lens, take that shot, then shift the lens the other direction with no or the opposite tilt and take a second shot, then stitch the two shots to get an image wider than a fish eye in focus from inches to infinity even with the lens wide open.
This lens is mostly useful for architectural and landscape photography. You will not use it to photograph the kids or carry around town on vacation (unless you take photographic vacations). It takes a lot of work. Basically, the shot has to be set up in manual exposure and focus before the lens is shifted. A tripod is not absolutely necessary but will be useful for most shots, especially if you plan to stitch multiple shots. It takes those of us old enough to remember back to the days when everything had to be set manually. For those not that old, it will be a shock to have to make so many settings. But for certain shots, there is no substitute for this lens.
It is probably a professional only lens. The cost, effort and basic photographic knowledge required means this lens will never hit the mass market. But for those who like to take landscape panoramas, it is almost a necessity.
UPDATE
I recently had a chance to photograph a slot canyon. It was narrow and tall and I thought a perfect place to try out this lens. I did get some good shots but I was much more impressed with the 16 to 35mm f2.8 II. It was a sharp as the 17mm, easier to use and a lot more versatile. Part of the problem with the 17mm was the work required to set up a shot. It took forever and the results were uneven. This was not a place where tilting lines were a problem so I had the highest hope for shooting multiple shots shifting from side to side to create very wide angles. I found that the 17mm would produce a shot that appeared to be wider angle because I could get closer but the 16mm would get the same shot just not as elongated. The 16mm shot was the more impressive for that particular place. At another site I was shooting an arch and found I could easily get the whole span in the 16mm. A two shot stitch with the 17mm was no more impressive and had a problem with darkening at each end.
Bottom line, the 17mm is no substitute for other lenses. It is a highly specialized lens useful when you have to stitch multiple shots or keep vertical lines straight. The 16mm to 35mm zoom and the 15mm fisheye will be better choices for 95% of all the landscape panoramas and canyon shots.
SECOND UPDATE
I recently tested this lens agains the 14mm II and 16-35 II zoom in a simple landscape panorama with the sun in the upper left quarter of the frame. The 16-35 flared the most, to the point the photo was ruined. It had a high quality filter that may have added to the effect but I was surprised with the amount of flare, which was mostly thick uneven rays emanating from the sun and not multi colored shapes across the frame. The 14mm also flared badly around the sun but less than the zoom. It had no filter. The biggest surprise was the 17mm. It had virtually no flare. Slight rays around the sun but a nice effect. Shifting the lens to both sides then stitching the shots together produced a stunning shot, very wide and clear. This will be my choice for that kind of shot in the future.
