Sigma's 70-300mm f4-f5.6 APO macro super lens has a compact apochromatic telezoom lens that incorporates two special low-dispersion glass elements in the front lens group with one special low-dispersion glass element in the rear lens group. (More customer reviews)This lens really is a gem! It is remarkably sharp wide open as long as you focus accurately. The focus ring is a little stiff, but works very smoothly with no play at all. Lens build is pretty solid, only the lens cap and hood feel kind of cheap. Bokeh with this lens is gorgeous, even stopped down. Be aware that this lens has manual aperture, and is not chipped, so there is no communication between it and the camera. That means you get no focus confirm and no f stop setting will appear in camera or in the EXIF data. I'm not sure why, but in my case on my 5D it shows as 50mm focal length in the EXIF. I've seen programmable focus confirm chips adverstised for this lens on E-Bay, but have no idea how well they work.

(More customer reviews)The lens is very sharp at all apertures. It works very well for portraits with good bokeh (nice out of focus areas and transition, close-ups and of course anything that requires tilt/shift capability.
I use it on both the Nikon d300 and d700 bodies and am very pleased with the images that it produces. The lens is smooth and easily worked for all operations and the manual focus is smooth and precise.
Unlike the previous reviewer, I don't have a big problem with the tilt/shift configuration. It works fine the way it is, for the vast majority of applications. I don't disagree that it would be nice to be able to easily switch the alignment back and forth, but I don't think that is a big deal.

The PC-E Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/2.8D Perspective Control (PC) lens corrects linear distortion in order to better replicate images assen by the human eye, including straightening the converging lines of rectilinear objects such as buildings, while also introducing welcome command over depth-of-field. Positives:
- True f/1.4 low light lens: I've seen variation of how well I felt some lenses really gather light and this one really lives up to what I hoped for
- Nice contrast & color: The Vivitar behaves exactly as my Nikkors with regard to color rendering and all my shots have had nice contrast. Wonderful performance here.
- Decent build: Ok do its not in the same league as my old Nikkor 55mm f/3.5 which I think would live through a world war, but its not bad. The caps and sunshade are so-so but the metal mount, focus action and glass all seem well beyond the price point.
- Bokeh: I find the bokeh very appealing, your mileage may vary but I like it.
- Sharpness: With proper technique this lens can really shine in terms of sharpness. I did a test against my Nikon 35-70mm f/2.8 and Nikon 50mm f/1.8 and felt that the Vivitar had better center sharpness than either of them. Nailing focus at f/1.4 takes very good technique and practice though.
Negatives:
- Chromatic aberration: It doesn't show up in all shots, but in those with shiny objects or extreme contrasted borders I see a lot of both purple and green color fringing. You have to zoom in to see it, but there can be a lot of it depending on the shot
- Focus pocus: This isn't really the lenses fault but nailing a shot at f/1.4 takes some technique. When I did my comparison shots I mounted my D90 on a tripod and used extreme LiveView magnification to come within millimeters of focus between the different shots taken. Kudos to LiveView it proved to be invaluable for that.
- Quality control: While my lens has been quite good, I've read about others on the Vivitar Flickr group having issues with defective lens coatings or aperture blades that get stuck. It appears to be a minority of the lenses but is worth being aware of. Buying through Amazon and a good reputable shop should help as they're more likely to have a good return/exchange policy.

The build of this lens is very good however the hood is a bit flimsy but not an issue as many sell this lens without hood. Focus is very smooth but would prefer it to be less stiff but it may loosen up with use as some of my other lenses. Image quality is a bit soft @ 1.4 but gets very good stopped down. I now use this lens more than I thought as the colors are very rich and bokeh is very good. Bottom line for around $300.00 it is an exceptional value.

Nikon 85mm f/1.4G AF-S Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Review

(More customer reviews)I own the prior version of this lens (the non-AFS 85mm 1.4), and it's one of my all time favorites. There's something almost magic about it for me - I almost can't take a bad picture with it.
So when Nikon released the updated version, I was a little hesitant to upgrade - at least until I went to audition the new lens in one of the big NYC camera shops. After using the new lens firsthand, I just couldn't resist. Now, I own the new one, and the older one is on eBay.
To be clear, by my eye, there's not a huge difference in image quality, as the older lens was already excellent on all counts. The updated version is maybe slightly sharper in the corners on an FX body, colors seem perhaps a bit more vivid, and it seems a bit less prone to flare when you point it directly at a bright light source. It focuses a few inches closer than its predecessor and weighs maybe an ounce or two more. Still, it's not like one is "bad" and the other "good" - just slightly different, and not at all a dramatic difference for most users.
To me, where the compelling value comes from is the new AFS focusing setup, making autofocus nearly instant and incredibly accurate. Thanks to the wide f/1.4 aperture, you always get a bright image, and on both my D3 and D300, focus is blindingly fast and dead-on accurate. This was my only real gripe with the previous lens, and I found myself often either missing shots because of the slow autofocus, or I'd spend a lot of energy manually focusing instead of composing the exact shot I wanted. Now, with the new 85mm f/1.4G, I get fantastic image quality, plus much better and faster handling - and to me, that makes it worthwhile.
Still, the older lens is no slouch, and I suppose if I had neither one and was on a tight budget, I'd certainly have no trouble going with the older lens. There seems to be maybe a $500 premium to get the AFS version, although that might narrow as more lenses get into the market and we see some better discounting.
Of course, if you're questioning whether to upgrade, the pro-grade Nikon lenses hold their value very well, and although I haven't sold mine yet, I'm thinking I'll get 80% of what I paid for it when it was new several years ago, and that makes the transaction easier to handle.
Definitely recommended.

The 9-bladed aperture creates beautiful bokeh (the out of focus areas) and the sharpness, color and contrast are amazing. Primarily designed as a portrait lens, it really shines at f/2 to f/5.6 with an amazing 3-D like quality that has to be seen to be believed. The fit and finish are first class, with a nice feel and balance to it. It uses 77mm filters like most other Nikon pro glass and flares quite easily so be sure to use the included metal lens hood.

Nikon 85mm f/3.5G AF-S DX ED VR Micro Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras Review

(More customer reviews)It took me some thinking to come up with a criticism of this lens, which is, after all, sharp as a tack, light of weight, 'relatively' inexpensive, and the perfect working length for a DX camera. I finally decided that my only issue is that Nikon did not throw in an 85mm 1.4 as a two for one deal. Speed is nice sometimes, although crisp shots at infinity to 1:1 is really much nicer. And let's face it, 3.5 isn't all that much slower than 2.8 (Nikon's standard aperture for macro lenses). The decision to make this a 3.5 means a much lighter weight (and slightly lower price) than Nikon's flagship 105mm.
I already own the 60 and 105 macro nikkors which are usually mounted on D300s's. The 60's short working distance get's in the way too often when it gets used on a full frame camera, though. The 105 is a wonderful lens but I find that my aging wrists complain after a few hours hand holding. So it tends to stay in the studio on a tripod. The 85 solves these problems and, as an added benefit, takes wonderful photos.
I'm not going to go into analyses of sharpness or contrast - there are better sources for that. And everything Nikon says about the lens is true. If pushed into a corner I will admit that the 105 seems to have a VERY slightly snappier image (and it should), but for general utility on a DX camera, the 85mm 3.5 is the one to own.

Nikon 85mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras Review

(More customer reviews)A exceptional portrait lens for both digital and film, the Nikkor 85mm f/1.8D is usably sharp wide open and tack sharp by the time you stop down even just a bit. Relatively small and very light, it feels just right in my hand. Steve McCurry is one of my favorite photographers and I was happy to discover that many of his great shots were taken with this lens.
Also, if you shoot on a manual focus body like the F3, you'll like the solid but smooth feel of the focus ring.
The 85mm comes with a metal, screw-on hood. My preference is the plastic bayonet mounts, but I find that I don't need the hood that often since this lens doesn't tend to flare.
Two minor complaints about this lens: first, the bokeh is not exceptional. That's OK; I'm not a bokeh hound. But when I see the creamy out of focus specular highlights that the 85mm f/1.4 produces, sometimes I dream about spending the extra money.
Second, I wish it were AF-S. But even without AF-S, it focuses faster than you'd expect.
Finally, the construction is solid. I've used it heavily for two years in deserts, jungles, and glaciers (ok, and in less glamorous places like around the apartment) and it still looks brand new.
In short, my favorite lens. Absolutely worth every penny.
