(More customer reviews)After reading the reviews on this lens and considering the price It was a "no brainer" to make this purchase. For amateur photographer this precision instrument seemed like a bargain.
Unfortunatley even with my K20D's green light for focusing manual lenses the sharpness when stopped down to 1.4 could be fooled a little. This resulted in a slight out of focus subject. You can order a split screen focusing screen "after market" to help remedy the situation. Or you can practice focusing this great lens and get it right most of the time. I guess its up to you and how much effort you want to put into knowing your equipment. You can also increase your depth of field a little if the lighting situation will let you. This seems to help my camera in focus light get it spot on every time.
My copy could have a little focusing problem, but I believe its my inexperience with such a fine instrument. That is why I have given this a four out of five stars. Be prepared to pratice a lot to get the best result right every time!
As with all my Amazon. com's purchases this one went smooth and fast.

Used with a Nikon D70 and 50mm 1:1.8D.
I'm still getting a feel for this filter. So far I've had a hard time capturing the sharpness seen in the example photo. I've been surprised at how little light is needed to take a shot with f/1.8 aperture (shutter speed between 1/10s and 1/20s). Worth the money and quality build.
*edit* Most digital cameras have an internal IR blocking filter that works against IR pass filters like this item. For sharp pictures with a DSLR a tripod is highly recommended. This filter will work best on a film camera.
If you're looking for a good IR filter for a DSLR you may want to consider purchasing a second camera and having the internal IR-cut filter removed for use with this external IR-pass filter. Ideally, there are companies out there that can install an internal IR-pass filter (~$300) that will allow for infrared pictures and allow for using the cameras view finder. This would require that the camera be dedicated to IR only however.

(More customer reviews)Whether or not you need a UV/Protecting filter on your expensive glass is a topic that is debated endlessly on photographic forums. There are those who think that it is silly to put a cheap piece of glass in front expensive glass (it can only reduce the contrast/quality of the picture right?). And there are others who think that it is a lot better to scratch/get dirty/lick(?) a cheap piece of glass than a $2000 lens.
Either way, as far as filters go, the Hoya HD filters are really nice. They are multi-coated and easy to clean. Unlike the cheap filters out there, they are made of real glass. And if you are somewhat brave, they can be had for somewhat decent prices from sellers in HK. Definitely worth getting. I have several of them (including 2 at the 77mm filter size)

The range is perfect for day to day use because it allows you to get close as well as shoot from clear across the street. 28 is a decent wide angle and the 300 is fabulous. A purchase that I would make again. The greatest part about this is that you aren't forced to change your lens over and over to capture different kinds of shots. You can leave the standard lens at home. The camera of fashion photographers, Nikon delivers on quality as always. The lens also adapts to all Nikon models. A good buy if not one of the best that I have ever made for my camera. Of course they already said all of this in the other blurb, but I just had to back them up on what they said earlier.

It is without a doubt the most amazing lens that I've ever used. Bar none!! Forget the fact that it's a manual focus and give it a whirl. I guarantee that you'll never want to put it down. I haven't: it's been on my d-700 since Christmas and is likely to remain there until our savings bounce back and is replaced by it's big brother, the 100mm.
Once you get used to it, you can use it for everything from portrait to macro photography. Yeah, it's a 21mm wide angle lens that does it all!!
Got to love Zeiss - they make the best glass in the industry!!

I would recommend getting a UV haze filter instead. It seems that the warming aspect of this filter feels just a bit too pink for my taste. If you're looking for a haze filter and still want the skylight (warming) coloration, this is a GREAT filter.

(More customer reviews)Ya can use your hand to block the sun, but then ya only have one to shoot with. Also, I dont use UV protectors, so lens protection is a valuable purpose of a hood. My only complaint is that everything for this hobby is so expensive. My other complaint is that it can be inconvenient to carry and take on and off. Perhaps a semi rigid hood that flips out for use and flips back for carry so ya never have to take it off and risk having it roll down the street or lost - I dunno.

This lens retains a manual lens diaphragm, which means that lens apertures must be opened and closed via stop-down metering. In plain English, it's not nearly as automatic as most other Nikkor lenses - both manual focusing and autofocusing - when it comes to setting the desired aperture and taking the photograph. But those who are interested in both architecture and landscape photography will appreciate the fact that this lens will adjust apparent distortions by manually shifting the lens angle via its tilt and shift feature (For example if you came up close to a forest and photographed with a regular 28mm lens, the resulting image would look as though the forest was "falling down"; instead with this perspective control lens, any photograph of the forest will show that it is still standing erect.).

Tamron Autofocus 28-200mm f/3.8-5.6 XR Aspherical (IF) Lens for Nikon SLR Cameras (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)You cannot go wrong with this new lens by Tamron! I bought this lens about a month ago for use with my Nikon N65 and am very pleased. The quality of pictures this lens takes is better than my Nikor 28-80 lens plus I don't have to switch between that lens and my 80-200 lens! Picture quality and contrast is superior throughout the range of this lens (no distortion) and the zoom ring operates very smoothly. I've also noticed better depth of field in this lens over my two other lenses.
I've used the lens mainly for sporting/outdoor events (bright sun and overcast conditions) but have also taken pictures indoors in various lighting situations with the same great results. So far, I've taken about 12 rolls of film (mostly 800 speed) and have been very satisfied with my pictures. No color correction by my lab has been necessary and my developer always brags about my pictures! Between the Nikon camera and this Tamron lens, you can't go wrong!
The lens is lightweight (12 oz) but don't think you are exchanging quality for a lighter lens. This newest generation lens by Tamron combines the best of both worlds. Having to buy 62 mm filters for this lens vs. the 72 mm filters that most 28-200 zoom lenses require is another bonus.
If you are thinking about getting a 28-200 zoom lens, I definitely recommend this lens!

Nikon 45mm f/2.8 Nikkor AI-S Manual Focus Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras (Silver) Review

(More customer reviews)I got this lens as the companion for my FM3a. The lens was especially designed for the camera and they make a beautiful silver pair. As far as aesthetics goes, these two are a match made in heaven.
So what's right about it? Lots.
The lens is 45mm which is only 2mm longer than the 'true' normal of 35mm film which is 43mm. That means that it is more normal than your standard 50mm lens.
It is stylish. The pancake design is sleek and tight. The silver matches the silver of the FM3a (will they make one in black to match the black FM3a?). The provided filter and inverted lens hood also add to the lens' attractiveness. It is also light, which makes it an easy choice to take along as your normal lens.
The lens is very sharp throughout its focal range. It is a snap to focus the lens and the focus ring is solid and sure. The aperture blades are rounded so that the final aperture is almost a circle. If bokeh is your thing, this lens delivers awesome blur.
There are drawbacks, of course.
It would be nice if the lens was a little faster. The 50mm Nikkon lenses come in f1.4 and f1.8. They are more than twice as fast, allowing you to gather more light when you need it. The 45mm is restricted to f2.8, which is plenty fast for everyday shots, but in lower light a faster film may be necessary.
I found the focusing ring and the aperture ring a little too close for comfort. Sometimes when trying to adjust the focus, I ended up adjusting the aperture instead. It's not a huge deal, as it's simply a twist of the ring to change it back, but it happens often enough that there may be a user-design issue that needs to be addressed (redesign the user? :-)
The price. It is too high. That's the biggest complaint I have with this lens. With a 50mm f1.8 available for bargain basement prices, is it worth it to spend this much on a slower, only slightly more normal lens? That's up to you to decide.
In all, I'm very happy with this lens. It is a treat to use and the picture quality is outstanding. I don't know if I would have bought it if I hadn't been swept up in the FM3a purchase, but I'm glad that I have it now. It is my primary lens and it hardly leaves the camera body. Of course it doesn't have auto-focus, so you may not find it terribly useful on your N80 or N75, but if you are getting the FM3a, take a look. You might find that the price is justifiable.
