(More customer reviews)I'm photographing wildlife as a hobby for about 6 years now and before this lens I used the regular 70-300 zoom lens and due to budget I could'nt buy any of the brand's telephotos until I found this lens ,at first I was suspicious because it seems too cheap for a 500mm lens but this was before I received my first photos and transparencies from the lab because it turned out to be way better than I could ever imagine, the photos were great, very nice color and contrast, not to mention the depth of field of a telephoto which is very shallow and makes the main object very strong ,the image comes with a very nice blurred background and a very shrp main objects ,image wise this lens is very good (not only for the price range )and the only drawback is the slow auto focus . Anyway, this lens forces the use of a sturdy tripod so you should take it in account. after about a year with this lens I can say that I'm more than satisfied ,there is no match for it in the price range

Light and practical enough to carry all over Africa for the week you're there. A good safari company ought to get you close enough so a 300mm lens should be fine. Anything bigger will be to heavy to carry around for a week or so.

(More customer reviews)Short but sweet: this superlens is what you need. If you can only pack one, keep this one attached to your Nikon DSLR and leave the others at the house. I own several Sigma lenses besides this one, and there are certainly times when I want them. The 10-20 (Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras) and the Nikon 50mm f1.8 (Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras) being the other two "go-to" lenses that I carry almost everywhere. But I am finding more and more that I can get the shot I want with the superlens. The quality is outstanding. The front of the lens does not rotate as the lens is focused or zoomed, so I leave the included shaped hood on all the time. At full zoom, the lens gets pretty long (impressively so), and it's not the lightest. But it's full of high quality optics, and all that glass isn't going to be lightweight.
Bottom line: For your Nikon (I own the D90) you cannot go wrong with this product instead of the kit lenses that come with the D90. If you have not bought your Nikon DSLR yet, I suggest going with the body only and get a prime lens or two like these Sigmas; you will be much happier with them than the kit lenses.

The only improvement I would suggest is to leave out some of the "fillers" and add a filter set kit. I forgot to get a polarizing filter for the lens - would have been happy to pay more for the more complete kit. Otherwise, the lens was great. I used it with a tripod and got some great pictures of our trip!

This is a wonderful doubler for your lens, but before you get it there are few things you need to know.
I am using this with my Nikon D-3000. This doubler needs sunlight. Period! If you use it ouddoors in full sun, the autofocus works perfectly.
You can turn your lens to manual to focus when it refuses to do it on it's own and it will still take great shots.
Such cases for me have been... fluorescent lighting (actually any indoor lighting I have tried it on) and very cloudy days.
Make sure it is on a tripod during these manual focus times, because the shutter speed is reduced and doing it hand-held (for me) caused motion blur.
My main use for this is outdoor wildlife photography and it is absolutely what I needed. On a sunny day this week, I actually captured a Red Tailed Hawk gliding
through the air about 100 meters away and you can see every detail of the bird.
No complaints from me on this product.

There are times when the lens will hunt a little bit when focusing, but this is not enough of a problem to cause you to miss a shot or cause a problem. The ability to imediately manualy focus the lens without having to switch to manual focus is not only a great convenience, it is absolutely a necesity when photoghaphing wildlife in the jungle, or even through the brush or in a tree in your own backyard. If your camera should focus on the foreground clutter instead of the desired subject matter, all one has to do is to rotate the focusing ring to focus on the subject, and shoot. I have found this lens to be extremely sharp and acurate over the entire frame area. The F2.8 light gathering ability is excelent, alowing you to add the Sigma APO 2X EX teleconverter to have a fully auto 140-400 F5.6 lens as well for little more money. Using this combination as well I have noticed no decrease in sharpness of image quality, although focusing may be slightly slower. In continuous focus mode this combination still had no trouble keeping up with birds in flight, although a tripod would be highly recomended. A nice feature is the tripod mount which can be used to grip and hold the lens and camera while shooting, or in less than a second can be detatched from the lens if so prefered. The camera can also be rotated a full 360 degrees within the tripod mount instead of the stndard 90 degrees of most other brands of lenses. The lens comes complete with with end caps, a padded soft side storage case, and even a lens hood, specialy designed to eliminate vigneting- at no extra charge. Although normaly dedicated to Nikor lenses, after inspecting and using this lens I found it to be equal in quality and better designed (in my opnion) in some areas than the Nikor 80-200 F2.8 silent wave lens. It is also smaller and lighter than the Nikor lens, a big plus in all day use, in or out of the jungle. On top of everything else I was able to purchase the Sigma lens for...less than the Nikor lens. A great lens at a great price.

It did take some time to figure out how to program the f stop into the camera but after that it does work well. Yes it needs lots of light but so does any lens set at an 6.3 f stop. It actually is fun seeing just what 500m and 100m does!
I would highly suggest a monopod or tripod for 1000m but I also knew that prior to purchase.
I really is a good value for the price.
