(More customer reviews)It works well for a 30 mm or longer lens (nice and long for plenty of shade). Less then about 30 mm (wide zooms, etc.) you'll get vignetting. It has a metal mounting ring that's also inside threaded and long enough to use a center pinch lens cap, etc., after the hood. It works very well with a Circular Polarizer on the lens first then the hood. The hood will rotate the Polarizer, & sense its round, not petal shaped the shade is not changed. Of course, a screw in hood is the only way to still have a hood if you use a step up ring (if you don't want to buy filters for every size lens). The hood is collapsible but the rubber is kind of thin so it won't hold its' shape if you leave it on & shove your camera into a holster bag. The threads on the ring are clean and well machined. It seems well made.

(More customer reviews)I have been looking for an easier way to protect the front my my lens without having to either take off my lens hood or trying to fumble around with the lens cap with the hood still on. Op/Tech came up with the solution! All you have to do is stretch the proper size hood hat over the hood and everything is protected and ready to go. Super easy to take off, putting on takes a little more time, but you never miss a picture putting it on anyway. Basically this is an inexpensive way to add some extra insurance against getting dirt, water, etc on your front element while you are walking around looking for shots. It is also very flexible and easy to stick in a pouch or pocket when not being used.

(More customer reviews)Lens hoods or shades are used to prevent flare from light sources at close angles to the shooting axis. They are usually necessary on telephoto lenses. Using a hood on a wide angle lens can cause vignetting, which is why 'petal' style shades, with the corners cut out, are used on shorter lenses. (Not just because they look cool.)
If you've never used a rubber lens shade, here are a few things you should know:
1. Even when collapsed, a rubber lens shade acts as a bumper to protect the lens from banging into things. This is especially important on long lenses.
2. The hood is useful for shooting through glass by eliminating reflections, even from your own flash. You can angle the lens a little without losing the contact.
3. The hood can be shaped to fit into special situations and will bounce back.
4. Adding or changing filters can be accomplished without removing the hood from the lens.
ABOUT THIS SHADE:
A very good shade for the money. The threads fit smoothly on both the lens and filter sides. The rubber is flexible, but rigid enough to keep its shape. The hood is configured in a Z-fold which gives you different degrees of shading.
BUT: The hood is too deep to use on shorter lenses without vignetting. Also, it sticks out about a 1/2 inch from the lens, making the lens an inch wider at the front. You might have issues with fitting into some holster style camera bags.

(More customer reviews)I really like this lens hood, it collapses down and fits easily in my backpacks. I dont even carry most of my large & rigid lens hoods anymore as this works on most of my lenses. I bought this primarily for shooting in aquariums and through glass to keep reflections down to a minimum which this hood is perfect for. I also like that it screws in like a filter so it works on all my 77mm lenses. I have 5 Canon lenses that all have different lens hoods and they dont fit on the other 77mm lenses (like my 70-200mm lens hood will not fit on my 100-400 or my 24-70, etc..) I did notice that I could see the hood when I was shooting at 24mm on my full frame 5D Mk II but once I zoomed out to 30mm, it was out of the frame. I just folded the rubber back when shooting at 24mm and that alleviated this problem.
This lens hood is simple, practical and works great.

(More customer reviews)This Opteka 72mm Screw-in Collapsible Rubber Lens Hood sounds like a good idea - as a replacement for the more solid original Nikon lens hood. However it is quite a disappointing product. While as a stand-alone object it is rather well made, it does not function well enough as a lens hood. It tends to slip out of the lens; with Nikon's 18-200mm lens it leads to vignetting (even when it is fully collapsed) - and this is usually not always visible through the lens; this may occur with a certain zoom length, but I have not systematically researched this; lastly when the camera sits on the table the rubber gets squashed and then when you come to use the camera - the hood does not form a regular circle - perhaps contributing to the vignetting effect. I am back to the original hood.

I tested it on a Canon 50mm f1.8 lens mounted to a Digital Rebel XTi, and there was no vignetting of the image. It seems to be durable even tough it is made out of plastic. The box is compact enough to justify storing the hood inside of the box within my camera bag. Considering that other hoods cost almost twice as much, this one is a bargain.

(More customer reviews)Rubber hoods used to be really popular in the 1970s before the petal-type hoods were included with the lens by the manufacturer. So I guess its sort of a "throwback" to the old days (is film next?).
One thing this item has is threads in the front so that you can replace your lens cap or perhaps use a filter. Many rubber hoods do not have this feature.
While it might be argued that the filter belongs on the lens before the hood to eliminate vignetting, threads are usually desirable on the front as well to keep from losing your lens cap (at least for Nikon lenses).
This hood is not for super wide angle lenses - it is for standard or telephoto lenses. If you need a wide angle hood, there are wide angle versions of these rubber hoods.
Many times 3rd party photo products are junk, but this one is perhaps an exception as it is made pretty well.
