(More customer reviews)I disagree with Jeff Kershaw's review for the older version of this lens (Sigma 70-300mm APO Super), in that it's very unfair to compare this lens to a L series lens, as those lens start at over $500 due to it's very specific high-grade optics manufacturing process. To compare this lens to a lens that starts at over 4X the price is like comparing a Honda Civic to a Porsche. Like the civic, this Sigma lens is well rounded, good for beginner and consumer SLR photographers, and maybe some "pro-sumer" on a tight budget, or even students. For the price, this lens is a bargain, as I've been doing a lot of research before buying this lens (price range in the $130-225 for telephoto). What I liked most about this is the APO lenses, which prevent reflection inside the lens which creates "ghosting" (inverted light ghostly shadow that appers on your image) which is usually apparent in nightshots. During the day APO lenses decrease those "purple fuzzies" (chromatic aberration) you see against high contrast (like a bird's wing against the sky). Granted this lens is no Porsche like the Canon L series, but for the price range, may hit the spot for some folks. I mainly use this camera for macro photography and taking photos of the Empire state building from my roof, which is 24 blocks away. This lens is definitely better quality than the Canon 75-300 USM III f/4-5.6 which is usually considered the benchmark for this price range telephoto.
Also note that there are different versions of these lenses (despite close naming), so be careful about what you buy. The is a APO DG version with Macro specifically made for digital SLRs which is what is listed here (the "official" name of this lens is: 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO DG Macro), and a non APO version of this lens which is a bit cheaper (but not worth it at all). Also there's ones listed as APO II which is the "older" version, which I don't know the quality of, but know that it is older than the model listed here.
Summary: If you're on a tight budget this is as good as it gets in this price bracket. The next tier where there's significant gains in lens imaging doesn't even start until you start spending in $600-1800 range.

Don't get me wrong, you can't find a better price on such a product as others try to sale you a lens support for $150 or more. The only problem I have is the bulkiness but it is strong and sturdy and has adjustments everywhere. This is the cheapest alternative and better than nothing. I mean try to hold a nikon 80-200mm 2.8 push pull early version with no support and your arms begin to shake and in return you get even more blurred pictures.

(More customer reviews)If you are looking for an inexpensive 500mm or 1000mm lens to use occasionally or just for fun, this one is a good choice.
If you have been drooling for a long lens and are thinking about this one over a 300mm with autofocus, then you are making a horrible choice!
This lens does exactly what it says, which is why I got one and am happy with it. Some things you should know before buying:
1. The 'T-Ring' adapter is a MUST or it won't attach to your camera.
2. It is COMPLETELY MANUAL!!! NO autofocus, manual apeture, manual focal length adjustment... And you can't use it on your camera unless you put the camera in MANUAL mode. You cannot use it with a preset setting like landscape, portrait, auto, action, etc. So if you are not comfortable and confident in setting your own shutter speed, apeture setting, and focusing by hand, this is not for you.
3. You MUST use this lens with a tripod. MUST! If you try to hand-hold the lens (even with a quick shutter) in 1000mm mode the loss of quality due to vibration will be about the same as if you were using a cropped image from a 200mm-300mm lens. If you don't want to use a tripod, spend your money on a 300mm lens with autofocus. You'll get a better picture AND a wider field of view.
4. Also because of vibration noise with any lens this size, if your camera has a remote or cord shutter, use it. If not, set your camera to take multiple shots. That way you won't have to live with the shaky first shot.
5. The field of view is only 5 degrees and the minimum focal length is measured in meters! Neither fact is bad, but something you should consider before you buy.
Since my primary use is to photograph birds from a distance when birdwatching, it works well for me for the money. If you want to take close-up snaps of you kid in center field making a running catch during a ballgame, don't even think about it!

(More customer reviews)I must admit I did not buy this monster of a lens - it came to me the old fashion way (no it wasn't stolen) my parents purchased it for me - they have more disposable income than I. Well after having had it for a little while, there are a few things I have learned: 1. Don't unleash this beast around other photographers or anyone else for that matter unless you are a total camera snob and are trying to compensate for certain inadequacies. 2. Use a monster tripod - this beast weighs over 100 lbs.. 3. Let the lens come to ambient temperature before using. 4. Do not use it for photographing ANYTHING from the deck of your home in San Francisco - unless you want your neighbors phoning SFPD complaining that you are a voyeur - SFPD was impressed with my photos of the Palace of Fine Arts and Alcatraz. Now I wanted this lens for nature photography - this is what I do for fun. Unfortunately, I think the lens is much too large and heavy to be transported with any ease other than hiring a Sherpa.

(More customer reviews)There are many positive features about this lens and there are a few negative this too. I have used this lens on Canon and Nikon cameras, it can be adapted to any mount with the correct t-adapter.
-This lens produces very sharp pictures only if you have your camera on a tripod. With all lenses, the more zoom, the less area of view. Do not think you will be holding this lens in your hands shooting.
-This lens needs light. It works great outdoors. I have taken many shots of birds, houses, trees, ect)
Overall, it is the only lens under $600 that can zoom as far as it can. You just need to understand want it can and cannot do. I am happy with it.

But it is what it is.
For my set-up, it must be used manually since the Sony lens is f/4. This was clearly stated in the ad, but I'll still hold that last star to make room for a converter in the same price range that can be used in auto mode.

(More customer reviews)I originally was looking into the 70-300mm APO macro by Sigma and the 70-300mm lens by Canon. I chose this one because I was reading the reviews of the 70-300 by both comapnies, and it seemed that at the 300mm length the lens was very vey soft. Too soft to make a decent print. So I looked into this zoom range and it didnt bother me that it was only 200mm because I have the Canon XT and the 1.6x crop factor would make the zoom over 300 mm, which is more than I need. Plus, I saw pictures of this lens on one of the review site, and at the 200mm end, the pictures were not that soft! THey seemed like they could make a decent sized print.
Going with my hunch, I bought this 55-200 mm lens and boy am I glad I did!! The autofocus has great speed for the money I paid. Its a little noisy, but I actually like it. At the long end, I was using a shutter speed of 1\500 of a second and my hand shake (which you could def. see) was not apparent in teh photos. I would say at 1\150 and less would certainly make blurry pics. I plan on using a tripod at the long end for the most part. The build and feel of the lens is amazing. THe lens hood is awesome too. it goes over the lens and locks on the other way for easier carry around. and the speed of the lens is def. fast enough if you are out in broad daylight. Indoors things I believe would be a mess. Color rendition is quite nice as well. So overall, it is very sharp at the 55mm side, and decently sharp at teh 200mm size.
The only con I see is that you will need a step up ring for 58mm filters. I have a 58mm polarizer and was bummed about this...but step ups are really cheap, so its no biggy.
I bought this for my trip to AZ that I am going on soon. We will be going to the zoo and bird sanctuaries so it seems perfect for the occasion. I think this lens is amazing for the price. GO BUY IT!
*UPDATE* I just took some test shots. All from a tripod on a sunny day. I took 18 shots total, in the progression as follows: 55mm at f/4.0, 55mm at f\5.6, 55mm at f\8.0, 55mm at f\11.0, and I did this with the zoom lengths at 70mm, 105mm, 135mm, and 200mm respectively. All were shot with a Canon 350D. What I found was 55mm-105mm were sharp w\ all fstops, 8.0 and 11.0 being the best, but you couldnt really tell the difference. Then when it hit 135 mm, it was a bit soft at 5.0 and 11.0...8.0 was decently sharp, and then at 200mm the sharpest was at 11.0. When I say sharpest, I do believe it could make a pretty decent sized print. I mainly print 12x18 w/ my 350D, and I assume I could make that size print with this lens. There was some CA in all my shots, but I CS2 could easily fix it. I will update you after I come back from my trip to AZ!
*UPDATE*
Just got back from my trip. Went to the zoo with this lens and it is great! Took many pics, got some great shots of peacocks and parrots, etc. Feathers are really sharp. I also took pics of birds in their natural habitat. The lens was pretty sharp, and def. made decent photos. Autofocus hunts a bit, but for the most part, great lens!

This lens is cheap. It is well built, feels smooth, but is really a telescope adapted to a camera. This is BAD JUJU (With a twist, read on!)
The Long:
When I first opened the box I was really impressed by the build quality. The machining of the barrel was perfect, as was the paint job. The objective lens was beautiful, and the secondary mirror mounting element was perfectly centered and machined. Everything reeked of professionalism and excellent quality control. The second thing to strike me is that the thing is really massive. It has an extremely large front element, and that strangeness is exacerbated by the secondary mirror mount smack dab in the middle. Upon investigating further I discovered 3 tiny screw in filters that were a .2 and .6 neutral density with a Skylight filter (color warming) These tiny filters screw into the back of the lens where it mounts to the camera, which can make it a real pain if you choose to change or remove one because you have to take off the T adapter first in order fit your fingers in there.
Why all these talk of primary and secondary mirrors? This lens is a Cassegrain reflector telescope. The light enters the front where it is bounced off a concave primary mirror at the rear to a secondary convex mirror at the front, which then travels through the hole in the center of the primary mirror in the rear into the cameras mirror box. Sounds fantastic right? Depends on your application. This configuration yields an incredibly small depth of field when dealing with things inside the hyperfocal distance. Basically anything inside the "infinity" setting has a small depth of field. Were talking almost macro small. 1 to 3 inches maximum. Very depressing unless you consider its true design, a telescope. More on that later.
My first "wildlife" trial shots were taken on a nice steady tripod with the 2 second shutter delay on. I consistently got blurred images due to "Mirror Slap" (The vibration of the mirror raising to expose the shutter) and this was only alleviated by using the mirror lock up and Live View, which is a pain for shooting wildlife to say the least. Secondly the tiny depth of field ruined all shots as the farther part of the subject rapidly blurred in a very unpleasant manner. So wildlife and sports photography are out for this lens.
However considering this lenses telescope construction prompted me to wait for nightfall and try taking some astronomical photos. I was incredibly pleased! At 500mm the moon fills most of the frame, and being beyond the hyperfocal distance the entire thing stayed crisp and sharp, again provided I used the mirror lock up.
Pros: Cheap, Well Constructed, Lightweight for 500mm, Short for 500mm
Cons: Limited Uses, f/8, Tripod (Must), Cable Release (Optional)
Notes: I would give it 2 stars were it not for its incredible build quality. I wish all my lenses were built to this standard!

The PRO 300 3x is an auto-exposure, manualfocus converter designed for use with lenses of 50mm or above and work best with telephoto lenses of 100mm to 500mm. The PRO 300 3.0x can be used with telephoto zoom lenses as well as prime lenses. However, Kenko does not recommend them for lenses that have a zoom range that starts under 50 mm.

(More customer reviews)I've been reading mixed reviews on the Opteks lens for a while, for the price I thought I take a chance. It performs as expected. The zoom mechanism is a tube near the camera that slides, it's not smooth and a little clunky to do, but it works. I don't use the double much, don't really need it, and it does not fit in the bag with it attached to the lens (I think this is a flaw and the bag should have been larger) and there is no separate bag for the doubler - rather then take the chance of dust getting in the lens from screwing and unscrewing the adapter from the lens then attaching the doubler and screwing back on the adapter to the doubler, I just don't use it much. You have to take your time on focusing as it is very sensitive. You are able to handhold it at 650mm (just bearly) but at any other zoom level you must have a good tripod to hold it. This lens is HUGE. I would recommend this lens for nature or senic photography, but it's not fast enough (f8-f16) to use if for any movement and it would be hard to focus on anything moving rapidly.
