Sigma 8mm f/3.5 EX DG Circular Fisheye Lens for Sigma SLR Cameras Review

I got mine about a month ago and am just back from 10 days in Italy, where I used this extensively.
Sharp, good flare control, lots of fun. The previous reviewer says something about the AF being slow-- which, while true, is only half the story. You're almost always going to be focusing at or near infinity, so it's actually very rare to have to wait. Because this lens has such wide depth of field, I actually usually keep it on manual focus and leave it near infinity.
Actually, the biggest challenge with this lens is composition-- it can be surprisingly hard to find a scene with interesting things in all directions. That said, this lens is *excellent* for inside buildings and crowded city streets. Be aware that outdoors, finding the correct exposure can be difficult for a number of reasons. I did significantly better in M (manual) mode than my camera was doing in A (aperture) mode. (reasons for difficulty include the dark corners in the frame which mess up the camera's metering in some modes, and the probability that the sun will be in the frame and/or there will be both very light and very dark areas in the frame)
This lens is excellent for making spherical panoramas, and for realllllly wide angle shots (I'm de-fishing a lot of my pictures with software).
(I use this lens with a Canon 10D)

Sigma's super multi-layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting, a common problem with digital cameras. The new lens power layout reduces color aberrations. Providing excellent image quality for digital and film SLR cameras. This lens can be used for the scientific applications such as the solid angle measurements of cloud distribution over the sky, the vegetation distribution of the rain forest canopy, etc., due to the quantifiable angle/area relationship it produces. Bought this for my 70-300mm Sony/Minolta zoom. It works well and provides picture quality consistent with the lens alone.
But it is what it is.
For my set-up, it must be used manually since the Sony lens is f/4. This was clearly stated in the ad, but I'll still hold that last star to make room for a converter in the same price range that can be used in auto mode.

RainbowImaging 58mm Adjustable Fader ND Filter Neutral Density (ND2 - ND400) Multi-Coated Japan Review

RainbowImaging 58mm Adjustable Fader ND Filter Neutral Density (ND2 - ND400) Multi-Coated Japan
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Nothing matches the power of a Neutral Density (ND) filter for a simple means to introduce dynamic elements into an otherwise static scene. For those who don't know, neutral density filters reduce the amount of light coming through the lens. With an ND filter, you cn reduce the light, so you can use a slower exposure and blur that waterfall you're photographing. It looks a like more like a waterfall if the falling water isn't frozen in time and space. Likewise, let's say you're photographing a street scene - use a ND filter and the shoppers hurrying along become blurred, adding a dynamic element to the scene. By the way, you'll generally want to use a tripod or monopod when shooting with ND filters.
This ND filter is adjustable through a range of NF number 2 through 400, which is quite remarkable. That's a range of 8 f-stops. It sure beats having to carry several ND filters and fumbling for the one you want.
There is no question that these are inexpensive filters. The nearest competitor is twice as costly. These filters are multi-coated instead of single-coated.
I've only been able to put them to limited use so far, because it is winter in Chicago and I am not doing much outdoor photography.
But so far, my limited tests have been encouraging. The adjustment ring slides smoothly and stays in place. I've noticed no color shifts (something that would be typical with inexpensive filters). Vignetting on a 28mm digital camera lens is moderately severe at 28mm, but disappears between 35 - 50mm. For landscape photography, this could be a killer unless you are willing to crop your photos.
Overall, I am very pleased with this ND filter. It seems to do the job without breaking the bank.
Jerry

Neutral Density (ND) filters can reduce the intensity of light without appreciably changing its color. Classic ND filters have different f-stop reduction numbers and transmittance thus generated can be applied for different shooting conditions, such as portraiture, water falls, etc. This innovative item brings great innovation of the filter industry. Through the polarization angle modulation (rotate the filter ring when operating), this lens can change the luminous flux substantially with freedom, reducing the ND number from 2 to 400! It can easily replace dozens of all grade of density ND gray filters The filter is made of two pieces of high polarizer (HPL) which has above 99.7 polarization and a precision rotary of the wide-angle lens ring. Please note the glass of this filter is made in Japan, and it is multi-coated. (a single coated will sell at better price)..

This lens is available under multiple brand names. I reviewed the Pentax version here: Opteka 6.5mm f/3.5 Manual Focus Aspherical Fisheye Lens for Pentax and Samsung Digital SLR Cameras. I suspect that the review that Gawain tried to include is the one from the lenstip site (dotcom). What Gawain didn't know (because this product's descriptions don't cover this) is that the Pentax lens IS NOT manual aperture (Canon and Nikon versions are, but not the Pentax) - this lens is just manual focus - the aperture can be set in camera once you set the ring to A. The problem is that the lens pictured here is probably a Canon/Nikon version. BH has the correct photo for the Pentax mount where you can see the A position.

Average Reviews:

What more could you want. I've used Canon's great 10-22mm and it is a nice lens but as a comparison here is what I found.
-Sharpness goes to the Tokina hands down. While wide open @ 2.8 it might be about equal by the time the Tokina is stopped down to the 3.5 that the Canon is wide open there is no comparison. -Zoom Range obviously goes to Canon. Much more usable here than the limited almost fixed focal length Tokina. Actually you might even say that the Tokina is close to a prime. Also I liked that extra 1mm on the wide end (it is very noticeable). Myself I don't mind the limited zoom as I'm always on the wide side and don't even use the 16mm.
-Build Quality again this belongs to the Tokina as it is built like a tank as are most of the pro grade Tokinas. Canon's build quality good for this consumer designed lens but is not up to their L (pro) standards.
-CAs Chromatic Aberrations or purple fringing If you are shooting into high contrast scenes (a bridge against a sky background) this is a real problem for both lenses but the Canon is MUCH better here. This is becoming less important as PhotoShop is able to remove it effectively.
-Lack of barrel distortion goes again to the Tokina which is very slight, especially for a ultra wide zoom. It is much better corrected than the Canon.
-Focus Speed Canon with their USM is fastest but not by much. However, the Canon is quieter too. I do like the clutch system of the Tokina once I got used to it. For manual focus (and I use that a lot) the Tokina is well damped, smooth and usable something that can't be said for the Canon.
-Flare Bad in both lenses but here Canon is better as well. Contra light is a demon in both lenses and care should be taken to always use the hood. Provided with the Tokina and conspicuously absent in the Canon which will set you back another 35 dollars or so.
-Aperture Obviously this goes to the Tokina. Not only is it 2.8 constant aperture it is very usable and sharp. It gets marginally sharper when stopped down but it is SHARP even wide open. The biggest improvement is at the edges when stopped down with the center remaining very sharp throughout. To get the same performance from the canon you need to get to about f5.6 to pull in the edges with further improvement to f8.
Well to wrap it up, the Tokina is quite a lens. Couple that to a savings of about $250.00 and it is a no brainer. While no lens is perfect, and with the CAs this lens has it certainly isn't as well, it maintains great quality and the rugged build make it a good choice for me. I am a semi-pro and take about 10 to 15 thousand exposures a year. I need that rugged build. I own several Canon L lenses and this isn't out of place in my bag. I don't miss that 1mm much as with an ultra wide about 3 or 4 steps back gets in the same view. It would be nice to have the range the 22mm gives but not at the expense of the 2.8 aperture.
My recommendation. BUY IT. You won't be sorry.

I bought these to take close up pictures for internet sales and am quit pleased. You can add even more power by screwing the lenses together. They work very well for close-ups and are far less expensive than a larger lens. I recommended them to a friend who had seen the work I did with them, and she bought a set too.

This has been one of the best investments that I have made for this camera (Nikon D3000). I have been able to take stunning Macro shots without the use of a macro lens. I have not had to make and changes to the camera or devices that came with the camera and they have worked flawlessly the first time they were put onto the camera. This product is every bit worth the money that i spent just for the tubes and it comes with extras in the box (they are the ones in the description, such as cleaning cloth and so on). This is a must buy if you are into the photography thing and you like to get close up images of variety of things ranging from things like flowers (about tic tac size) to monarch butterflies and other insects. Fantastic Product and would definately recommend to a Friend for their photography needs.

The Auto Extension Tube Set contains three tubes of different length, a 12mm, 20mm, and 36mm, which can be used individually or in any combination to obtain the desired magnification.

This Nikon Lens Cleaning Kit contains everything you'll ever need to properly clean your lenses, including Microfiber Cloth, Fluid & Tissue.

Well what can I tell you, this lens is awesome, I've testes it and let me tell you some of the results I noticed:
- The amount of flare (even pointing the lens towards the sun) is minimal, it really surprised me in a very positive way.
- It doesn't darkens the corners or produce vignetting effect AT ALL!
- The quality in the final pictures is superb, the pictures are crisp sharp even in the edges!
- Unlinke the peleng lens, the rokinon does fill the entire frame of the picture with no empty corners.
- It does not have the annoying lock ring of the peleng.
- When you handle the lens it feels great, the build quality is great and the rubber grip in the focus ring is awesome, its heaviness makes it feel like a solid rock and well built pice of glass; and, unlike the peleng, it does look modern!
- The colors look nice and saturated in the final pictures.
I loved this one, and I can truely say that this lens will exceed your expectations, the best bang for the buck!
Note for the buyers: this lens is also sold under other brands such as: opteka, samyang, falcon; but it's the same glass

Very good construction quality, metal focus ring, main body and the mount. with built in lens shade.
Extremely Wide on Nikon 1.5X APS-C bodies, can be used on the full frame body BUT cannot cover whole frame, the border of the frame will be black(not only dark). It has shorter focal length than other APS fisheye lens(normally around 10mm), so it produces less distorted pictures that more like wide angle but not fisheye. The distortion becomes obvious only at the border side.
Optic quality is just so so, but consider its prise comparing with other fisheye lens. It's acceptable. Because of the extremely short focal length, it is hard to manual focus when you what to use wide open aperture. (but if you use smaller aperture, such as F8, F11, you don't even need to focus the depth of field is wide enough to contain everything.)

I was very disappointed in this lens the first week or so I used it. It seemed to wash out images with every stray bit of ambient light, and the effective resolution seemed quite poor. After hundreds of exposures the patterns started to emerge, however, that helped me figure out how to maximize the strengths of the lens and minimize the weaknesses.
First of all, overcoming the confusion caused by full manual settings on my D90 was a big step. The manuals and guidebooks for the D90 don't give much useful info on these settings, so a lot of trial and error are involved. To be fair I was also learning the D90 at the same time. I also was putting the shutter mode into remote control when I was using the external Opteka wired interval timer/remote trigger. It should have been in single shot mode. (You need to turn off autofocus on the camera body.)
Secondly, there are times when the D90 genuinely will shut down because it thinks there is no lens, and you get the F-- error message, but these are far fewer than I thought given my other setting issues. It is easily remedied by slight wiggle of the lens in its t-mount. I have only had to unseat and reseat the lens twice to clear the error and continue. That isn't bad for a manual lens, and I have had to do it many times for the kit lens that came with the D90.
I learned that you have to use live view mode and enlarge the focus area to focus. Period. I certainly can't focus on the internal focus screen or in live view without enlargement. Part of the problem is that any touching of the lens at all, even on a tripod, causes severe movment of the image you are trying to focus. There is amazingly shallow depth of field on this lens on a D90 chip at any distance. Your past experience with most telephoto lenses will not prepare you for this extreme.
When I shot Nikon F series I always put the ground glass focus screen in place of the split image screen, and learned some tricks about over and under focussing every time I was setting up a shot. I have had to use these tricks on the Opteka, and even then I am surprised by the focus in the final image at least a third of the time, but it is getting better with experience. I have begun to get acceptable focus in some rare hand held situations, but it has taken a lot of getting used to.
For steadyness, I have found that there are few places where even a tripod is really rock solid. This requires developing a light touch on the focussing, use of some kind of remote shutter trigger, and staying very still during exposure. There is a shutter delay setting that raises the mirror, pauses to damp motion, then fires the shutter. It is a very subtle aid under some circumstances. Under most conditions it isn't really noticeable...but you should know about it and use it when appropriate.
Synching with a flash was a revelation. The first time I used a flash and saw the results I began to realize how clean and sharp an image this lens was capable of. Of course there are very few situations where you can use a flash with an effective focal length of 1200 mm and closest focus over 11 feet...but it is an useful exercise to learn the abilities of the lens, or if you like to extremely flatten your portrait or still life visual space.
Would I prefer a giant autofocus Nikon DX VR AF etc lens? I am not so sure now that I am gaining control over the various parameters of quality on this lens. The photographers who use the multi thousand dollar lenses love the image quality of course, but they are a beast to lug around and set up. I find this compact mirror reflex pretty easy to wrangle, and am delighted with the super telephoto option it gives me for the price.
See my moon shot above. I have a 4" reflector telescope with nikon adapters, and this lens gives me better results than the reflector.

It is a great deal for the price. If your not looking to do anything to crazy it's a lot of fun. The picture come out awesome. However, you can't zoom in a great deal or the effect goes away. The only downfall is when you use the flash it sometimes makes a shadow at the bottom of the shot because it picks up the end of the lens. But that can easily be fixed. Its defiantly something for beginners looking to have fun.

I've been reading mixed reviews on the Opteks lens for a while, for the price I thought I take a chance. It performs as expected. The zoom mechanism is a tube near the camera that slides, it's not smooth and a little clunky to do, but it works. I don't use the double much, don't really need it, and it does not fit in the bag with it attached to the lens (I think this is a flaw and the bag should have been larger) and there is no separate bag for the doubler - rather then take the chance of dust getting in the lens from screwing and unscrewing the adapter from the lens then attaching the doubler and screwing back on the adapter to the doubler, I just don't use it much. You have to take your time on focusing as it is very sensitive. You are able to handhold it at 650mm (just bearly) but at any other zoom level you must have a good tripod to hold it. This lens is HUGE. I would recommend this lens for nature or senic photography, but it's not fast enough (f8-f16) to use if for any movement and it would be hard to focus on anything moving rapidly.
