(More customer reviews)When compared to the soon to come out Photoflex Kit Starflash Gemini 150 w/s LiteDome Kit, this kit seems the way to go. Although the Photoflex does have a 250W modeling lamp while the Elinchrom has a 100W modeling lamp, that is the only leg up Photoflex has. This Elinchrom Kit does 90V to 260V, perfect for world travel, it has 1/10 power adjustments vs. 1/8 for more control, it has a digital display, and the Elinchrom's seem to be really well built. The only downside is that to add Elinchrom only accesories, is a little expensive, but what you get with this kit for the money, either this one or the D-Lite 400 w/s, you can't beat it. Not to mention you can Amazon Prime it, something you can't do with the Photflex.

(More customer reviews)I was very happy with everything that was in the kit except for the quick charge battery charger. The battery charger was a piece of junk. Shortly after plugging it into the wall outlet the charger became very hot and so were the batteries. I quickly unplugged the unit and pulled the batteries out of the charger. Later I finished charging the batteries in a slow charger and they were fine. I have only had one opportunity to use the flash unit. The 580EX II worked with no problems. I simply attached it to the hotshoe on my Canon 40D and placed the plastic diffuser over it and took a time delayed photo of myself. I made no adjustments for the flash either in the camera or on the flash unit. I just put the batteries into the unit and it was ready to go to work. I haven't used the bracket adapter, that offsets the flash, but it seems that it should work just fine. It seems like it mounts to the tripod mount on the camera. And then it looks as though the bracket could then be attached to a tripod if desired. Adorama can keep those battery chargers.

(More customer reviews)I really like these ND filters. Unlike a screw-on filter these can be adjusted up or down depending on where the brightest part of your scene is going to be. If you have the multi-holder, you can also stack them to increase the effect.
Using ND filters takes less time and effort than stacking exposures in Photoshop... the only downside is that ND filters like these have a stright transition, so if you have a very jagged skyline then hit can artifically darken some peaks in an image.

(More customer reviews)I got this package deal as it was the same price as getting just the camera and lens without all the other stuff in the package, so I figured it couldn't hurt. Everything promised is included and new, but some of the additional stuff is pretty cheap, though not all of it. The bag is pretty nice and actually larger than I had anticipated, with plenty of room for this gear and quite a bit more. The memory card is large and fast enough for HD video recording. The extra battery works fine and it is always nice to have a spare. The cleaning kit is pretty simple, but it works. The screen protector works well, you must cut it out to the proper shape though, really not a big deal. The UV filter was incredibly difficult to get threaded properly on the lens, and I will be replacing it soon with a different brand. The main weak point of the kit is the tripod. The tripod is cheap feeling and not very sturdy. As I tightened the screws to lock everything in place, the plastic pieces creaked with even slight pressure. I will use this tripod for now while indoors, but will be replacing it as soon as I can.
All in all:
Great camera
Good lens, bag, battery, screen protector, cleaning kit and memory card
Pretty bad UV filter
Very bad tripod
Still, everything but the body and lens came as a free bonus, so I don't see why you wouldn't go with this over just the body and lens. If you already have a lens that fills the space of the 18-135 in this kit, just get the body and save the money to get nicer accessories.
Update: The price of the bundle has increased, and I would strongly consider getting just the body or body + kit lens. The extra stuff was nice, but I would not have bought this kit at the current price ($100 ish more than the body+kit lens)

(More customer reviews)With these filters you pretty much get what you pay for. They have good solid construction, and offer great protection for the lens. Threaded in front and hold caps pretty well too, which is a plus. But, once you start becoming more demanding of quality and move into more "serious" direction, the shortcomings would become more and more evident and very hard to compromise on. My main issue with these is glare they produce in extreme lighting conditions (night photography or very bright light). Some vignetting (although not terrible) is also introduced. For these reasons I never stack them either.
I feel that for kit lenses and less expensive ones they do an excellent job hence the 5 star rating with price-benefit ratio in mind. However, if you're using professional glass or feel that photography is something that you will be sticking to for a while consider doing a bit of research before committing to these.

(More customer reviews)I consider the 3G lensbaby a decent value for money (a little on the high side pricewise, at three times the cost of the original, but a fun and occasionally useful lens to play around with nonetheless).
The wide-angle and tele extenders, on the other hand, are fairly useless, and way overpriced for what you get. The widest shot you can get isn't very wide at all, and tele doesn't bring your subject appreciably closer. I expected more -- not 12 mm or 200 mm, but not this marginal, optically compromised performance either.

Build quality
Umbrella stands - Fine for the price. They extend up to 7 feet in height, easy to adjust, and the bulbs screw right in. They are lightweight and not the sturdiest things out there, but more than enough for thier purposes. any outdoor shooting, you will want to consider beanbags or stakes if you are on soft ground.
Flash bulbs- awwwhh man these things are pretty cool. First time playing with studio equipment so keep this all in perspective. So you plug the bulb into the head, flip on the power switch. A green light lets you know the bulb is alive, the amber light means its ready to fire. I have used these in several settings already and the flash detectors on these rock! Not once have i had a misfire! The flash ONLY when they see a flash! I tried to trigger them by flipping a room light on and off as fast as i could, they wouldnt fire. I have hit shutter speeds of about 1,500 and they sync up pretty good! So far i have been unable to make them slip up, and i have tried! I am shooting with a Nikon D40 with the pop-up flash, and an SB-600. it triggers on either fine. TTL mode is a No-No! as they WILL prematurly discharge off the TTL pre-flash. I set my SB-600 on Manual with 1/64 power and it has no power triggering them even in a large room with vaulted ceilings.
PC Hotshot Adapter. I dunno, it works, but it feels like a piece of junk. I dont know if i expect it to last or not. The PC cables are short also. 4-5 feet tops, so yer better off triggering with a flash IMO unless you want to upgrade the Hotshoe adapter. Honestly, even without this thing the whole setup is still a great deal at this price. So, this is unimportant.
Umbrellas. Not huge, but they seem to collapse / expand just fine. Light weight. Some people complained they got 2 white umbrellas, i got one of each. i rule.
The carrying bag, i have another one identical to this from a 9ft collapsable background support stand from Steve Kaiser. This one is just smaller, other than that, it is a clone. like a Mini-Me.
Anyways, i JUST got the bag in today. Like a lot of people ordering through coyboystudio they forgot to send something in the order, and like a lot of other reviewers coyboy studio immediatly mailed me a bag and got it here quick. great service! That said, the bag is better than expected. I expected a bare bones glorified canvas sack with a crappy zipper. Instead i get a pretty well designed back with an internal compartment on either side with a decent zipper, padded throughout with 1/8th inch padding. it has a side pocket, and can be opened down the middle or on the end. Im sure it will fit everything just fine. if not, i will edit my review. Summary
This is worth the price along for the bulbs, stands, and umbrellas. Throw in a shoddy PC hotshoe adapter that works, and a decent carrying bag and this is a no brainer. I dont think you can possible get better gear for this price. if you can, please let me know, cause im pretty impressed. Everything works flawlessly, and while it is not of professional build, for the price it cannot be beat.
EDIT:
The bag is not really large enough to accommodate the stands, umbrellas, bulbs, and the rest of it..... it fits my manfrotto Tripod and ballhead great though, plus room for my monopod.
have a Hakuba p100 bag, it fits this kit perfectly.

(More customer reviews)I loved my starter photography lighting kit! I'm fairly new to photography and want to learn more about studio lighting. I did some research and Cowboy Studio's basic photography kits came into the forefront. This is the perfect starter kit to take family portraits, still life or other product shots. The description on items included is somewhat of a misnomer. There is one full size backdrop stand, two muslin backdrop cloths (one white, one black), two tripod light stands & two lights. The lights can be used in one of three ways: softbox, monolight/continuous strobe or studio flash, one function at a time. The product description seemed as if there were one of each light. The lights are very versatile. The basic monolight can be converted to a softbox merely by slipping the softbox panel over the monolight. The light can be further enhanced by plugging in the studio-sync cords that attach directly to your camera for studio flash. I recommend buying some sandbags for base light supports to prevent tipping. Pro sandbags are made by other manufacturers but they are expensive. To save money you can use Ziploc bags and a few cubic feet of sand from the hardware store. That does the job. The muslin backdrop cloths are 5 ft. x 10 ft. so they aren't big enough to cover the backdrop stand when fully extended. Bigger muslin cloths of 10 x 13 ft & 10 x 20 ft are available from CowboyStudio as accessories.
I took a few test still life shots and self-portraits and they look great! It's amazing what a little light and some shadows can do for a photo. Don't be confused when assembling the kit. See link below for assembly directions. No instructions were included with the kit. It was fairly simple once I saw the illustrations. The whole kit weighs only 24 lbs. and comes with a bag for the sofbox attachments and backdrop frame. It's a very easy to use kit and of high quality. I highly recommend it. I will definitely buy more accessories from CowboyStudios in the near future. Enjoy.[...]

(More customer reviews)I'm just a wannabe/beginner when it comes to photography, but I think this kit rocks! I really shopped around to find the most bang for my buck & this did it for me.
I received just about everything that's in the picture (2 backdrop stands w/ crossbar, 3 light stands, 2 umbrellas, 3 lightbulbs, 3 light sockets, a white backdrop, and a black backdrop) plus a carrying case for the backdrop stands & crossbar pieces.
The photo shows the backdrop being held in place by two clamps, but those weren't included. The backdrops have an opening at the top to put the crossbar through. It's just like hanging a curtain.
I would've loved an extra carrying case for the light stands but considering what you already get for this price, that might be greedy. I had a 30" rolling duffle bag at home that I was able to easily fit all of the light stands into(without boxes) as well as the boxed bulbs & light sockets. There's plenty of room left over for me to also stash the backdrops plus one or two others.
I received my kit just in time to do a photo shoot with my new nephew. I really think this helped me to get some good looking shots.

For the price, not only do you get the camera cheaper than that currently listed at Best Buy, but you also get the 16GB memory card and case, both retail for about $30. I've reviewed each item below as they are listed above.
: This is a great starter camera. I suggest you read the reviews on the main Amazon D3000 product page.
: I highly recommend this 16GB card. On the highest JPEG setting I can take just over 2,000+ pictures. On the RAW setting I believe it takes around 1,000+.
: This battery is not a Nikon brand battery, but it works just as well, especially for a spare.
: The camera case is durable and has Velcro compartments that allow you to customize the layout. I configured mine so both my DSLR and point-and-shoot fit perfectly.
: The D3000 comes with a connector cable so you can plug your computer into your camera to download pictures. I still find it helpful to use this card reader though. All card readers are fairly basic and this one does its job.
: I'm not a big fan of the memory card wallet. It's just a leather pouch large enough to hold a few cards. But with your 16GB card, will you really need any more memory cards for this camera?
: The cleaning kit has all the basics.
: Luckily I haven't had the need to use the recovery software, but its good to know I have it in case I ever need it.

(More customer reviews)I ordered this kit about a week or two ago and the shipping said it wouldn't arrive till February 18th. I was a little bummed about how long I'd have to wait, but it ended up coming on February 4th!
Let me describe my level of photographic experience as to put this in context: I'm an "amateur" photographer, I've been shooting for a year and in that year I have poured over hundreds of photography books and thousands of articles. Over this past summer I devoted myself entirely to photography. I have a D300, SB900, 50mm f/1.8, 18-70 f/3.5-5.6, and 55-200. And now for the review!
I have been experimenting with off-camera flash for a while and I've read a lot about softbox vs umbrella vs diffusion panels/etc and they each definitely have their own niche. If you are like me and are just getting into the "strobist" frenzy, this kit is PERFECT for you. A stand will run you ~$50, an umbrella mount ~$20, and the umbrella itself is typically ~$20-40. That's about $100.
For 1/3 the price you get 4/5 the results.
The umbrella is pretty small as far as umbrellas typically go, but I can't really complain; the light is still very very soft. The umbrella mount feels cheap, but anyone who has any respect for their equipment shouldn't have any difficulty making it last. The stand is pretty light and extends up higher than I'll ever need.
Unless there is absolutely NO wind whatsoever, I would not recommend this kit for outdoor use (unless you have an assistant bracing the stand for you). Everything is so light that even a strong breeze would probably tip it over. That being said, you can sprint by this thing indoors without having to worry about it falling over.
FINAL VERDICT:
If you aren't sure if strobist photography is for you, or you simply want a cheap "entry-level" umbrella kit, buy this. If you have a real job and can drop over $100 for a manfrotto stand and a wescott umbrella then do that.

UPDATE: So it's been six months since I first bought this stand and I thought it'd be good to post a follow-up.
While working outside taking photos for a friend, I was using a cinderblock that had been cut such that it would perfectly brace the stand-- despite the fact that it wasn't particularly windy outside. When I moved the stand I forgot to move the brace with it. Sure enough, after a minute or two the stand fell umbrella-first into the dirt/hard pack snow mix. My SB900 stayed attached to the mount and stayed dry, the stand was undamaged, and the mount was in perfect condition. The only damage to any of the gear was that one spoke of the umbrella was bent slightly out of position. The umbrella still works perfectly and to be honest I forget that it's "broken" most of the time.
I was so pleased with these stands that when I bought another strobe I picked up another one of these stands. It came today, and I am equally impressed by its quality.

(More customer reviews)For those who don't know, the Panasonic G1 is the first (of hopefully many) camera that adheres to the new micro 4/3 format. What is so exciting about it? All SLR cameras use mirrors, prisms, and optical viewfinders so that the photographer can see what his/her subject "through the lens." SLRs have remained the defacto standard for most serious photographers because most find the whole viewfinder concept so appealing. The micro 4/3 does away with the mirrors and prisms, and replaces the optical viewfinder of SLRs with an electronic viewfinder. This allows the cameras that adhere to the standard to be much smaller (and wideangle lenses designed for this mount to be smaller as well). Onto the real review...
The EVF on the G1 is the first that I've seen that is remotely usable. While not as good as the OVF in my 5D, it is considerably better than the OVF in my older 350D. The first look through the EVF will impress anyone who hasn't used a Full-Frame camera before. While there is a noticeable lag (particularly when moving the camera around...a delay of a 10th of a second maybe), the fact that you can see a live histogram in the VF makes the lag completely worthwhile. Even better, the VF can increase the gain of the screen in darker conditions so you can actually see what you are shooting (it does get grainy, but it is better than seeing nothing at all). Finally, when you engage Manual Focus, the view in the EVF zooms in on your subject automatically which allows for perfect manual focus adjustments every time!! Without a doubt, this is the best interchangeable lens camera on the market if you are interested in manually focusing.
The articulating LCD is another design choice that is spot-on!! Why haven't other manufacturers caught on that "live view" is completely useless without an articulating LCD? Switching from the LCD to the EVF is as simple as putting your eye next to the viewfinder. There is a sensor there that detects when it is being used. The LCD doesn't have the super resolution of the new 5DMkII or the D700, but it has twice the resolution of my older 5D.
So is the camera pocketable? Not a chance. However, it isn't much bigger than the larger (with its kit lens) than modern superzoom Point&Shoot cameras. I bought it because I found that I was leaving my 5D (with 24-70 f/2.8) at home more often than not because i didn't want to carry so much weight. The G1, in comparison, is a joy to hold and carry. For me, the size is just right. Any smaller and the controls would be unusably small. Any larger and the camera would begin to resemble smaller DSLRs. Side Note: The kit lens has to be seen to be believed...it is SO small. Even the 45-200 lens (90-400) isn't much bigger than kit lenses for APS-C or FF cameras (let alone comparing it to the monstrous 100-400 lens that canon makes).
Noise is reasonable. I wouldn't go past ISO1250 for prints with the G1. ISO1600 and 3200 are more than useable for web viewing (which is how a majority of my pics are displayed). I never really understood how printable ISO6400 prints are suddenly required for every camera...how many people actually print a large number of images anyways? Downsized to Facebook or Picasaweb sizes, I would imagine that a ISO6400 G1 image would be more than adequate.
What I don't like is the lack of any large aperture lenses for the format. You can buy adapters to use standard 4/3 lenses but the older 4/3 lenses are likely larger than their future micro43 counterparts (and AF doesn't work with many of them). Adapters also exist for Leica M mount (I'm trying to convince my fiance that leica lenses are a better investment than the stock market right now...but I don't think that she is buying it). The depth of field for micro43 is already larger due to the smaller sensor so it will be hard to get subject isolation in photographs until large aperture prime lenses become available.
I'm really excited about the future of this format. Panasonic has promised a G1HD someone in the first half of this year (a G1 with video capabilities). In addition, 3 new lenses have been announced: a 7/14 f/4, a 14-140, and best of all a 20 mm f/1.7 pancake! Olympus also showed off a concept of a micro43 camera that looked no bigger than a small point&shoot. The future is exciting!
