(More customer reviews)Although you can buy an ND filter to decrease the depth of field, I find the decreased contrast of the filter much more obvious and desirable. The .3 filter definitely reduces the overly contrasty look of outdoor photos. The filtering is also so fine that there is no visible grain from the filter itself. The only inevitable and occasional consequence is a slight reduction in color vibrancy in some shots but that is not the fault of the filter. This is just a compromise that comes with reduced contrast sometimes depending on lighting conditions.

Reduces the amount of light passing through the camera lens without changing the color of the scene. This filter is especially useful in bright light conditions. Allows proper exposure at a wider lens opening when reducing depth of field to highlight a key subject by making the foreground and/or the background out of focus. (More customer reviews)I really like these ND filters. Unlike a screw-on filter these can be adjusted up or down depending on where the brightest part of your scene is going to be. If you have the multi-holder, you can also stack them to increase the effect.
Using ND filters takes less time and effort than stacking exposures in Photoshop... the only downside is that ND filters like these have a stright transition, so if you have a very jagged skyline then hit can artifically darken some peaks in an image.

(More customer reviews)I'm not going to get into why one would want this specific type of filter - there are books on the subject that will go into a lot more detail - here is one example - there are many: The Photographer's Guide to Filters (Photographers Guide).
What I will review is quality of this product. B+W filters are made in Germany. Germany is consistenly one of the best producers of high end glass and optics. I have been told the reason the quality of these filters is better than most is that they don't make them as separate units, but instead they build a cylinder of glass and cut each filter off of it. Consistent quality. Screw ring is hard metal, so it is very difficult to strip the threads. I have messed up the threads on cheaper brands by accident.
In my experience, buying filters falls into the category of you get what you pay for. Cheaper brands are out there, but if you want a very high quality filter, that is durable and consistent with what you want to achieve with it... you can't go wrong with B+W filters.
Be sure to choose the right size - for example, Nikon prints the size on the back of the lens cap.

Digital "film" cant handle under/over exposures as nicely as film can. U over expose even 1 stop and there is NO data in the blown highlights. U under expose by 2 stops or more and the dark parts are really grainy.
well, i have to take wedding couples and shoot their picture on one of our beautiful beaches! Have u ever tried to shoot a wedding couple (wearing white) and a sandy beach (super white sand) at noon without a cloud in the sky? Do u like pictures of a brides dress thats a pure white blob with NO details on it? If u like shooting at F13 or more no problems but at F13, the picture comes out way to sharp!Everything is in focus from the sand at their feet to the horizon! Not as appealing as shooting at F5.6 where u can get the background to be a little out of focus.
sure u can shoot faster shutter speed but, once u go beyond the 1/250 shutter speed, your flash dont work. Yes, u can use high speed flash sinc but that only works if u are standing about 3 feet from your subject. I use a Metz 60ct-4 flash (very powerful) to try and combat the shadows a noon day sun will give the subject ,so i have to use the 1/250 shutter speed!

It worked great! the one i bought lowers the aperture by 2 whole stops so instead of F13 i was shooting at F8! way better because i got to keep my shutter speed at 1/250 too!! Pictures came out way better and i didnt lose all the details in the brides dress.
only negative i had with the filter was it did change the color balance a bit. It went a little to the greenish side. But, thats an easy fix in photoshop.
id recommend this filter (or any ND filter) to be in anyone camera bags if they are going to shoot any pictures in bright sun!! your pictures will thank you!!
