Cokin filters were invented by professional photographer Jean Coquin. Tiffen 67mm Hot Mirror Filter Review

(More customer reviews)I own the 52mm version of this kit, and found it a shame to see this kit only received one star. Below is my review I wrote about the 52mm kit, I have recommended this kit (in several different sizes) to fellow photographers, they all have been very happy with their purchases, baring in mind Tiffen's quality control problems.
This is one of the best bargains that i've seen, "essentially" you get 3 filters for the price of one. The image quality with these filters is great, the 812 (warming) filter is by far a favorite giving back the color richness that flash photography so often washes out, that is unless you have the patience for constantly tweaking your flash power. Aside from the 812 the UV protector is basically a clear protective filter. While it obviously has advantages over clear glass, I tend not to think of it as any different. This too is a great filter which I use about half the time because it doesn't affect color hues or change f stop values too greatly while it takes the worry out of carrying the camera around ready for any candid shots that may occur. Finally included is the circular polarizer. This filter adjusts the amount of uv light entering the camera by spinning the filter to the direction the uv rays are entering (or turning the thingy till things look better). This lens is great for sunny days and will take surface glare off lakes and glass making them transparent again. It also makes colors more crisp in general when photographing buildings and other large "reflective" man-made things. So things sound great so far, but now to why I only give this item 4 stars. While Tiffen is known to be one of the best at photo and video filters, they have quality control issues that do no live up to thier reputation. In my case the 812 filter arrived with a discoloration in the glass. While it was didn't hurt image quality, with the flaw being towards the edge of the filter, I none the less didn't want to find a situation in which the flaw would diminish quality. Seeing as it was not amazon's fault my first e-mail went to Tiffen for a replacement which they said they would gladly do, but only after I send them the filter and they recieve it would they ship my replacement (not an option in my circumstances). Instead Amazon's wonderful customer service shown through again, and within 3 days they had replaced the entire set. The second set arrivided without flaw but since my other two filters were in perfect condition I traded just the 812. I havn't had any other issues and i'm very satisfied with my filters. The only other word of warning would be to that of the circular polorizer. While I recieved 2 that were flawless occassionally I have read in reviews customers have received ones that were assembled backwards making the lens useless. A quick way to check to see if your CP is working correctly is to hold it, thread facing yourself, and look at an LCD monitor or TV and spin it until the picture dissapears(obviously working correctly). I still wouldn't pass up this deal knowing what I do now, chances are everything will show up perfectly but none the less if you're concerned order it before you need it and check everything over carefully. Amazon is always the best for returns and will often ship a replacement the next day with overnight shipping.And a little further insight...
I was recently doing some black and white film photography, and decided to use my 812 warming filter as a protective lens as I was carrying 3 lenses with me. Just thought that I would mention that using this filter will produce a "White" sky in some outdoor photographs. The shots were taken with a gradient blue sky to which the entirety showed up white, even on bracketed sets, that should have shown something in one of the series. While itself was a interesting effect for some shots, it mostly just caused me frustration in the darkroom. I just wanted to add this as fair warning. I discovered this on accident, so I don't know if it applies to all sky conditions as I didn't do a lot B&W sky shots, I might test it using Photoshop later as I see they have the 812s effect built in. Anyways, good luck and have fun photoing.

ND Gradual Filters: Often it is necessary or desirable to balance the light intensity in one part of a scene with another. This is especially true in situations where you don't have total light control, as in bright contrast landscapes. Exposing for the foreground will produce a washed-out, over-exposed sky while exposing for the sky will leave the foreground dark and under-exposed. Cokin graduated gray ND filters are part clear, part neutral density. They allow the transition to be blended into the scene, often imperceptibly. A ND.6-to-clear, with a two stop differential, will generally compensate the average bright sky-to-foreground situation and is also the most popular density of the series. 121L - 2X Light starts with the same neutral density as 120, but feathers the grey almost from the color edge and more gently graduates to clear. One stop of compensation. 121M - 4X Medium is the same gentle graduation as 121L but with twice in density. Requires 2 stops of compensation. 121S - 8X Soft is twice the density of 121M and the graduation extends to 3/4 of the filter. Requires 3 stops.

(More customer reviews)Ordered this inexpensive filter kit to play with before investing in some better ones. The box that I received was labeled "Crystal Optics Limited Edition Digital camera/video 3-piece filter kit" This is totally different from the product listed on Amazon.
Upon opening the package, the filters don't look anything like what is pictured. They are actually black (not silver as in the product pictures) The seller needs to correct this so that buyers know what they are getting. They are un-coated despite the fact that it says "multi coated" on the box. The CPL and UV filters are glass, while the fluorescent daylight filter is plastic garbage. Build quality is so-so, I really just wanted the CPL to play with and it does a decent job, not as much polarization as other more expensive ones but it was cheap so no complaints. Just annoyed that the product I ordered was not what I actually got and it's not worth my time to send them back.

Cokin H250A P-Series ND Grad Kit Review

(More customer reviews)I really like these ND filters. Unlike a screw-on filter these can be adjusted up or down depending on where the brightest part of your scene is going to be. If you have the multi-holder, you can also stack them to increase the effect.
Using ND filters takes less time and effort than stacking exposures in Photoshop... the only downside is that ND filters like these have a stright transition, so if you have a very jagged skyline then hit can artifically darken some peaks in an image.

Tiffen 77mm Photo Essentials Filter Kit Review

(More customer reviews)With these filters you pretty much get what you pay for. They have good solid construction, and offer great protection for the lens. Threaded in front and hold caps pretty well too, which is a plus. But, once you start becoming more demanding of quality and move into more "serious" direction, the shortcomings would become more and more evident and very hard to compromise on. My main issue with these is glare they produce in extreme lighting conditions (night photography or very bright light). Some vignetting (although not terrible) is also introduced. For these reasons I never stack them either.
I feel that for kit lenses and less expensive ones they do an excellent job hence the 5 star rating with price-benefit ratio in mind. However, if you're using professional glass or feel that photography is something that you will be sticking to for a while consider doing a bit of research before committing to these.

67mm UV Filter Review

(More customer reviews)Having just spent hundreds of dollars on a new lens, the last thing you want to do is scratch up the new glass. That's where this bad boy comes in. The best part about it? You just spent a couple hundred dollars on a new lens, and probably don't have a lot left over, so the price on this is perfect. It's nice to see that Amazon is willing to stock generic equipment, because I find myself question sometimes why I need to spend $30 on a clear piece of glass that I'm really only using so I don't have to clean a lens and worry about it getting scratched up.
The threading on this filter fits my Tamron AF 28-75mm f/2.8 SP XR ZL Di LD Aspherical (IF) for Canon Digital SLR Cameras perfectly, and required very little effort to put onto the lens. After attaching it, I was able to look through my camera and see nothing, which was good, considering it was a clear piece of glass.
I guess if you're going to be making a living from your photographs, you'll probably want to pay a bit more for something like this, but this product will serve one function for the average consumer, protect the lens, and it does exactly that. There's no special branding (in fact, the band is pretty much black except for the size and the "made in japan" label) and nothing out of the ordinary. No light gets through the seal, and the materials used seem to be of a decent quality.
For $2 and some pocket change, I highly recommend this filter. For the price you'd pay for the high-end, brand name models, you can buy 10 of these and throw them out after a couple of shoots.

(More customer reviews)This filter set is of fair quality. The glass seems to be of high quality, but the coating is minimal, at best. It does not have a greenish or bluish taint that is typical of coated filters. I have used the UV on a Nikon lens. So far I have noticed almost no difference with or without the filter -- a good sign. The polarizer seems to be doing what it is supposed to do as well -- darkening the sky and reduce reflections. Given the fact that the price is very reasonable, I would recommend it to those of you who are looking for a set of inexpensive starter filters.

I've not used the polarizing filter or the florescent filter enough yet to fully rate them, but the UV filter does a great job and I've seen noticeable improvement in my pictures. Besides, the UV filter would be a whole lot cheaper to replace than a rather expensive telephoto lens.

(More customer reviews)I am a senior film-video major at Penn State and have been doing photography for the past few years. For $16.48, this is totally unbeatable.
The macro lenses are totally awesome. You can stack as many or as few as you want to get a stronger effect. I've used them on a 14-42mm lens, and a 50mm lens. With the 14-42, you can use all of them. With the 50, you can only use one or two. Essentially, the more telephoto the lens, the fewer you can use as the depth of field quickly dissipates. I have experienced NO vignetting or blurriness with these. The only way you get vignetting is if you stack them from smallest to largest rather than largest to smallest like you should. The only way it will blur is if you are stacking too many. Let me know if you would like to see photos of what the effect looks like. As far as quality, the paint on the side is starting to rub off, but they came in a convenient little case. The only issue I had was one of the four has a slight wiggle to the glass sometimes. This has no effect on photos or video and I am sure it won't in the future.
I have not yet used the filters extensively, but the UV is a must have, especially for outdoor shooting. It's something that should be on the lens all the time anyway simply for protection. The polarizer has an interesting effect on TV's, computer screens, etc. where it completely blacks out the screen without effecting anything else. It is also nice for saturating the sky when outdoors. I have not used the FDL yet, as I have no use for it.
This is a great price, and great product. I would totally recommend it to beginners and professionals, alike. They look great with video, as well, and fit any lens with a 52mm filter size. Enjoy,
