Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 EX DG IF HSM APO Telephoto Zoom Lens for Sigma SLR Cameras Review

Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 EX DG IF HSM APO Telephoto Zoom Lens for Sigma SLR Cameras

I shoot 2-3 sports events a week and while I love my D3 needed more reach (had been trying to shoot soccer & track meets with Nikon 70-200 & Sigma 100-300). I concluded after a lot of thought & soul searching it would be more strategic for me to buy D300/Sigma 120-300mm combo than a 200-400mm for the D3. [the 100-300mm is a great lens too, but that extra stop is so sweet!]
For me, I definitely wanted a f/2.8 lens and felt a zoom would be more versatile than the Nikon 300 f/2.8 (& cheaper too).
There's no question it's a heavy lens by most people's standards, but I always use with a Monfrotto 681B monopod (which I love too).
Have only had this combo for about a 2 weeks but love it. The pictures are tack sharp, and the bokeh is awesome--rivaling Nikon 70-200mm IMHO. People always mention you have to get a good copy from Sigma but buying new I was fairly certain this would not be a problem, and I knew I could always send it right back to Amazon for another copy with no problem.
[....]In summary this combo has helped me take my game to a whole new level, and I'm very, very happy with this lens.

The Sigma APO 120-300mm f2.8 EX DG HSM Lens for Sigma Digital SLR Cameras features a large aperture of f2.8 at the 300 millimeter focal length and is optimized for used with digital SLR cameras. This lens transforms a large-aperture f2.8 300 millimeter lens into a zoom lens that allows you to determine the picture composition you want without having to change your vantage point. It has two SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements in front group and another SLD element in the rear group for excellent correction of chromatic aberration. The latest in multi-layer lens coating technology and lens design reduce flare and ghosting, which is a common problem with digital cameras, and it also creates an optimum color balance through the entire zoom range. The lens' AF drive is equipped with a silent, responsive and high speed Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM), which also provides full-time manual focus function. Since focusing and zooming do not change its overall length, this lens is easy to hold and use. In addition, since the front of the lens does not rotate, a circular polarizing filter can be easily attached and used. High-speed focusing is possible when this lens is used with dedicated APO EX 1.4 x or 2x tele-converters (sold separately).

Olympus D450 1.2MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom Review

Olympus D450 1.2MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I started out thinking I was still a year away from affording a new digital camera with the features I wanted. I decided to hold out for a zoom lens and at least 1024 x 768 resolution, or wait. After a lot of research, I knew I wanted an Olympus, because of their excellent optics and their camera-first, digital-device-second approach, and because my Olympus 35mm point-and-shoot had served me well.
I thought my best deal would be on a used or discontinued model; however, because the original price of the 500L, 600L, and 400Z had been so high (in the $800-1200 range), the asking prices for these had not come down as much as I'd hoped, and what I had to be willing to pay had crept up as I shopped. When I saw what the 450Z was going for, I whipped out my credit card. Now that I've played around with it for a few weeks, I can't imagine there's a better digital camera for the money right now. I've compared with a couple of friends that have Nikon CoolPix cameras, and I suppose there's something that's better about them, but I can't honestly tell you what that would be, and the Nikon is twice the money!
The 450Z is an improved version of the well-received 400Z, but at a radically lower street price. Some of this is due to the packaging -- the 450Z leaves out the FlashPath floppy adapter (typically $70-90 alone) that was standard in the 400Z -- but clearly the manufacturing costs are coming down rapidly.
This camera performs incredibly well on the bottom-line measurement: It takes stunningly detailed and accurate pictures under a wide variety of conditions.
We've gotten used to accepting less than perfection for pictures taken in other than bright sunlight at normal distances. The 450Z adds several categories of picture-taking where you can now get predictable results: Flash, macro (including with flash), indoor lighting, low light, etc. There are just enough features to make the camera useful over the range of conditions, but not so many as to intimidate the snap-shooter. Because of the intelligence of the autofocus, exposure control, and white balance, it is still a great point-and-shoot camera.
Many features are related to getting the picture right at the right resolution, such as spot metering, exposure override, mode (resolution), different flash modes, macro, etc. Other features are related to viewing and managing the pictures you've taken. You can plug the camera into a VCR or TV monitor (RCA video jack) and give a quick slideshow of what's in memory. You can get around the small size of the LCD display (and this is one of the better ones) by zooming in on one segment (out of a 3 x 3 grid) of an image, to make sure the detail is there.
One other feature that other reviewers have found important: The 450Z will store images uncompressed, if you choose (the file size is huge); most other cameras up to this point perform at least some compression, even on high-quality settings.
The only thing I couldn't do well -- and this may just take some practice -- is action shots. All digital cameras have some lag between the time you decide to pull the trigger and the time the image is committed to memory, and this takes some getting used to, but the 450Z is quicker in this respect than its earlier counterparts. One significant feature is the "burst mode", which allows you to keep capturing images (about 1-2 a second) as long as the shutter button is pressed, and until the buffer fills up (seems to be about 6-10 images).
Most of us get into digital because of the cost and overhead of dealing with film and processing, only to have to scan prints or pay extra to the processor for digital images from film. Depending on resolution, you can get up to 122 images onto the standard 8MB memory card before unloading, and that's very liberating -- no more agonizing over whether to take another shot! However, once you play around with it a while, the mind starts to boggle at the possibilities, and film cameras seem like Stone-Age technology (especially since we are approaching the resolution of film with the million-plus pixels you can store in an image now).
The 450Z is a milestone in the improvement of digital cameras, a quantum leap in value vs. features and quality, even compared to other Olympus cameras. You won't believe how easy it is to get breath-taking digital photos. Get one!

I purchased this lens coat as a backup for the SLR camera body only system. I like the way this fits around the lens and the body. It's a little too snug at first as you have to streatch it to fit the first few times . After being on the camera for awhile it's a perfect fit.

Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC HSM ELD SLD Aspherical Super Wide Angle Lens for Pentax Digital SLR Cameras Review

Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC HSM ELD SLD Aspherical Super Wide Angle Lens for Pentax Digital SLR Cameras
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I bought the Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras 14 months ago, I didn't know what to expect. I never used a 3rd party lens or an ultra wide-angle, but I quickly learned to love the lens and the opportunities it created. Having said goodbye to the lens a week ago (still kicking), I decided to give this new slightly faster model for a spin.
Currently reviews or even sample photos are sparse, and even some details seem elusive, so lets start in the beginning:
* Like the predecessor, this model features HSM, so all Nikon DSLR users can benefit from this lens (D700, D3, and D3x users will only get a cropped view)
* Also like its predecessor, its a hefty well-built lens that's made in Japan
* It's comparable in size and weight to the original, but the 82mm front threads take some getting used to
* While the older model did not extend at 10mm and extended barely at the "long" end, the new one is flush from 16-13mm, and extends slightly at both the wide and the long end.
* the EX finish is a tad more refined, and it now features an AF/MF switch (full time override is available in AF). The focus ring is somewhat stiff, but has a nice movement to it. AF is blazing!
* Sigma seems to have revised the rear element a bit with an added piece of plastic to minimize reflections
* You also get an extra aperture blade for better bokeh and much better sunstars
* Just in case you are wondering, this lens works just like a Nikon lens with full functionality
I'll post photos, but in general its the equal or better to the earlier lens. At the wide end the extra 1/3 stop is barely worth mentioning, but at the wide end, you get 1 1/3 stop more light. The changes do go beyond that, as there now is ELD glass as well as SLD (in the previous version), and there is more aspheric glass. If this doesn't mean anything to you, just know this all helps it be a great lens!
This is a very challenging focal length to design for, especially if cost and size are a concern, so there is no perfect lens in this range. That being said, Sigma seemed to have used their experience with a previous 10-20mm to create a highly refined and very capable lens. If shooting at f/3.5 you will see some softness in the corners, but frankly it's not that limiting. Stopping down to f/5.6 helps a lot with gains in between, and it peeks at f/8-11 (maybe f/13 on a 6mp sensor).
Coming from an 18-## zoom? You'll get a whole new perspective, an opportunity to explore a new world of photography, and get to work with a lens of much better construction than a kit lens.
Coming from another ultra-wide angle? It may not be worth the switch (I sold my other one for a variety of reasons), but you almost get the speed of the Tokina AT-X116PRDXN AT-X PRO DX 11-16mm Ultra-wide Angle Lens for Nikon and you get a faster aperture and more useful zoom range than first gen ultra-wides such as the Nikon 12-24mm f/4G ED IF Autofocus DX Nikkor Zoom Lens or Tokina AT-XAF124DXN 12-24mm Wide-Angle Lens for Nikon.

Sigma Corporation is pleased to announce the new Sigma 10-20mm F3.5 EX DC HSM. This super-wide angle lens has a maximum aperture of F3.5 throughout the entire zoom range. With its wide angle view from 102.4 degrees it can produce striking images with exaggerated perspective. The maximum aperture of F3.5 is ideal for indoor shooting and it enables photographers to emphasize the subject. Two ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) glass elements and a SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass element provide excellent correction of color aberration. Four aspherical lenses provide correction for distortion and allow compact and lightweight construction. The Super Multi-Layer coating reduces flare and ghosting. High image quality is assured throughout the entire zoom range. The incorporation of HSM (Hyper-Sonic Motor) ensures a quiet and high-speed auto focus as well as full-time manual focusing capability. This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 9.4 inches (24cm) throughout the entire zoom range and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:6.6. The lens design incorporates an inner focusing system which eliminates front lens rotation, making the lens particularly suitable for using the Petal-type hood and polarizing filter. The Petal-type hood blocks extraneous light and reduces internal reflection.

I have only had 2 days to play with this lens, but so far am impressed with it's performance. I bought this mainly for outdoor use as I have a Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR lens for indoor shooting. I simply do not want that mammoth lens on my camera when hiking, etc., especially since fast aperture is not necessary in good light. This one looks like it will do nicely. Focus is pretty fast - hunts a little in lower light at telephoto, but that's pretty common for most lenses of this type. Image quality is very good so far. Some very minor fringing in a few of the shots (not an issue with JPEG's from my D90 because it automatically removes most CA). I'll shoot some RAW shots outdoors when I get a chance to see if it is anything to worry about, but so far it appears to be acceptable. Focus is extremely accurate - dead-on on every shot taken (no front focus issues that some Sigma lenses have). OS is also VERY impressive. I'd say really close to Nikon's best VRII lenses. I took a couple of 1/4 sec. shots handheld with only my elbows braced against my ribs, at full telephoto, and the shots were perfectly sharp. You can see the image start to float when the shutter is half-pressed, so you know the stabilizer is working. Lens mounts snugly onto the camera and has a good, sturdy metal mount like the better Nikon lenses have. Fits perfectly. I like the size and weight compared to the Nikon equivalent (it is somewhat more compact). The only drawback is that the lens is not internal focusing like the Nikon (which probably accounts for the compactness). This means that the lens hood must be a round one (not a petal hood, which I prefer) because the end of the lens rotates as it focuses. It also extends about 7/8 of an inch at closest focus, which makes the overall length pretty long at 300mm (about 8 inches without hood, around 10 with the hood attached). None of that really matters much to me, though. One thing that I liked about this one compared to the Nikon 70-300 VR was that the aperture starts at f4, not f4.5, so it's a bit faster than the Nikon. The shallow depth of field was surprising to me. Longer focal lengths tend to really amplify the effect at closer ranges, and that is very apparent with this one.
The best way to rate this lens would be to break down specific attributes, and then give a score (1 to 10) on that attribute, so here goes:
Image quality (so far): 9 (impressed with every one taken thus far - color, sharpness, etc. quite good)
Focus accuracy: 9 (low light the only issue)
Focus speed: 8 (could be a little better)
Focus noise: 7 (not as quiet to focus as Nikon AF lenses - even my huge 70-200 f2.8 VR lens is lots quieter)
Fit: 10
Finish quality: 7 (surface not as good looking or durable looking as Nikon, but not ugly either)
Optical Stabilization: 9.5
Size/weight: 9
Overall ease of use/functionality: 9
I will update with more information after using the lens more. I cannot give the lens 5 stars, although I believe it is not far from achieving that. I think most people will agree that this lens is worth the money spent and will do what it is intended to do, and do it well.
Update: Feb. 2010- Have taken a few more shots with this lens. All-in-all still very satisfied with it. The fringing noted earlier is there - a bit more than I first indicated. RAW shows slightly more than the JPEG's, but it is fairly easy to remove the majority of it in Lightroom. Some images look a bit soft. When I compare them to the 18-105 Nikon kit lens, I initially thought they were pretty comparable, but they are a tad bit softer when looked at closely. It is much softer than my 70-200 f2.8, even when that one is shot wide open - and the Sigma is FAR behind on anything stopped down to f4 or higher on the Nikon. However, I would expect nothing less from a lens that is over 5 times as expensive. Outdoor shots are very respectable from the Sigma - It is my recommendation that a person use this lens stopped down some outdoors, particularly at 200mm and above, as the fairly shallow depth of field when zoomed will render some subjects in front of the main subject out of focus, even on relatively distant shots. F8 to f11 fixes that most of the time. My initial rating of 4 stars still stands, as I feel that image quality is less than perfect, but as good as anyone should expect at this price level. The only individual rating that would change is the image quality that I rated a 9, is more like an 8 - still pretty good. Is is considerably better than a Nikon 55-200 VR that I sold recently - it was soft across the frame, with a very bad left side. Perhaps a bad copy? Anyway, the Sigma 70-300 OS is a lens I am proud to carry in my gear bag, and one that will work well for me for a long time.
Update 2: Mar. 2010 - Upon further inspection of the images, it appears that shots taken stopped down some are a fair bit sharper than when shot wide open. Stopped down shots look to be sharper than just about any of the Nikon 18-105 ones, but are softer than the Nikon when shot wide open. That being said, my recommendation in a sentence or two is: shoot this lens stopped down a bit and don't expect to use it in low light without flash or for indoor sports. The best shots will result from the lens set too slow to be of much use in those cases. If I have more to report, I will do so later.

Retrospective 10 (Black) Review

In my personal opinion/experience I've found Think Tank to be the brand to go to for top of the line camera bags. If you've got top of the line expensive equipment why not invest likewise in the bag?
Said that, I will try not to come off in this review as a bias "Think Tank" fan boy. To note, I have tried out other shoulder bags in camera stores and spent hours reading reviews from photographers on the field on their opinions on various camera bags before deciding upon this bag.
Then another headache and hurdle I went through was deciding upon the Pinestone or Black color (which I evidently went with the Black as it was more of a neutral color and could easily go with your various attire plus be used at more formal events).
I believe this is a fantastic bag to carry around short trails, to the beach, and especially around urban settings as a casual bag for travel. If you want something to go on for long hikes I'd probably look into getting a backpack or waistpack, in which this case I use the Think Tank Speed Demon which can be used as a smaller shoulder bag or waist pack when I want to travel even lighter. The bag is slightly heavy but feels like a Tank and could take a beating.
By no means is this a small bag, even as the smallest of the retrospective series it's a pretty large bag, but still within a bearable size to sling around town. The comfort padding along the shoulder strap is most welcomed and even for its size another reason I do try not to over pack the bag and weigh it down. You can fit 2 bodies with non-grips (recommended to reverse in opposite directions so their prisms don't bang against one another) or you can fit your D-SLR (non grip) body + standard size zoom lens attached with 2 more lenses in this bag with no problem. The bag is pretty deep and given you could probably thrown in a couple more lenses if they were small primes. It has a designated pocket within to keep a speedlite if you so choose to desire. There is a designated zipper and non zipper pocket within the interior dimension, with the outside pocket which they say you could fit in another dslr body only or an Ipad if you so wish - I personally just keep this outside pocket to keep trail food and snacks in while the zipper pocket on the other side to store the wallet, phone, and keys.
For event shooting and many other reviews you'll find on this bag the velcro options to silence the flaps is a cool feature which is very usable for events or churches. As with most Think Tank products is does give the option to attach accessories which sometimes I may loop my "R U Thirsty" Think Tank bottle carrier on one end when on a short trail or around town.
I will get to uploading a picture of the bag being worn to give a better idea of the size of the bag.

I love this adapter. I have had fun shooting video that looks more like film with smaller HD cameras with this adapter. You can see samples on Vimeo.
Overall the Letus Mini requires not much more than focusing and remembering to turn on the adapter motor, which runs on 2 AA batteries. Other adapters require you to purchase other "flip" devices or to flip your picture in post, which means you have to view/record your image upside down.
At first I tried to use it without support rails, that was a bad idea. The Letus Mini while small, is almost as heavy as my camera so I didn't want that much weight hanging off the front of my camera unsupported. The plastic threads on my camera had me a little bit worried about the whole set up, so I got the rails afterall.

Very good but not the best available from Marumi. Remember this is 52mm Marumi DHG (Digital High Grade) Circular Polarizer as mentioned in the product description. The pictures for this product are misleading as there are of the 72mm "Super" (= better coated) line of filters from Marumi. Even then, this is supposed to be technically better than most other well-known brands according to [...]. My decision to buy this was based on their assessment. I must say I am quite happy with the performance of this product for the price (I would have preferred "Super"). See my user pictures for more details. Good luck!

sure it doesnt do the work a real fish eye lens would do.. but its a great worth of you money!
only problems is ur ur still using the original flash of the camera, the lens will shade over items... still highly recommended, until youll have the money for a real lens! have fun!

Vanguard GH-100 Pistol Grip Ball Head Review

Vanguard GH-100 Pistol Grip Ball Head
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm thoroughly impressed with the Vanguard Pistol Grip Ball Head! I decided to take a chance with an unfamiliar brand and am so happy I did. I inherited a Manfrotto tripod from my father and was looking to update the mount with something a little more versatile than the basic quick release.
I've been wanting a ball head for quite some time, but hated the idea of spending $200+ for the Really Right Stuff brand that Scott Kelby recommends. So I started looking at the Manfrotto Joystick that Sandy Puc swears by and realized it had a limited range of motion when using heavier equipment and larger lenses (like my Nikon D700 with 70-200mm lens)! Thank goodness I picked up a copy of Popular Photography Magazine...I noticed they had announced their POP Awards and that the Vanguard GH-100 had won one of the coveted spots on their list of top products for 2010! After reading their endorsement I decided to take chance and judge the product for myself.
For less than $100 I have a professional grade ball head with bonus trigger grip. I love how adjustable it is and I feel confident my equipment is safe and won't sag under the weight of my camera/lens or tip the tripod over. I highly recommend you give a try and see for yourself how versatile and durable it is.

Depression of the handle allows 360-degrees of panning movement and -32 to +90-degrees of side-to-side tilt and -8 to +90-degree back to front tilt movement all round. It instantly locks into place with simple release of the handle. Other impressive features include its Friction Control System which allows you to modify the level of friction on the ball to accommodate changing equipment weight such as switching to heavier lenses. The anodized center ball allows for extremely fluid movement without sacrificing precise control. GH-100 ensures the safety of your expensive equipment with a dual-locking quick shoe mechanism that prevents accidental release. It lets you attach and detach your gear quickly and efficiently. Other notable features include its 72-click point panorama, offering 72-point rotation with click-into-place positioning that moves the camera 5 degrees per click and prevents jumps in shots to ensure a perfect 360-degree panorama.GH-100 provides impressive versatility in positioning with 360-degree horizontal movement and 90-angle tilt.

So far, it works well. I bought it at a great price and have encountered no problems thus far in my Canon 40D (but will be using it soon in a Canon 7D). If I do run into any problems, then I will update this review.
I consider 16GB to be very roomy, more than I'll probably need in the next few years. It's great how cheap flash memory has become.

The Nikon AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED Lens is a versatile and ultra-compact telephoto zoom lens that offers a 3.6x zoom range, ideal for portraiture, sports or wildlife photography. Its equivalent focal length in 35mm terms, when used on a digital camera, is 82-300mm. It is the ideal companion to the DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED standard zoom lens. The innovative Vibration Reduction (VR) system allows handheld telephoto zoom shooting even in poorly lit conditions. It minimizes image blur caused by camera shake, and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed 3 stops (8 times) faster. The Nikon Super Integrated Coating used in this lens minimizes ghosting and flare to provide even higher contrast and more vivid images, even in challenging light conditions. This G-type Nikkor lens is designed with no aperture rings, and offers easier, virtually mistake-free operation because the aperture does not need to be set to minimum.

Nikon N65 SLR Camera Kit w/ 28mm-80mm Lens (N652880KIT) Review

Nikon N65 SLR Camera Kit w/ 28mm-80mm Lens (N652880KIT)
Average Reviews:

I bought this camera four months ago knowing nothing about photography. Now, thanks to my F65, I'm shooting slide films and learning the zone system and continue to amaze ppl with my wonderful pictures. I had a chance to play with the more advanced F80 but besides the faster flash sync offered I'm fully satisfied with my easier-to-manage F65. By "easier" I don't mean any loss in functionalities or features. Advanced features like multiple exposures, depth-of-view preview and auto bracketing are all there inside this compact, light weight body. There's an optional infra red remote for this camera that functions like a cable release which's a must for night and serious photography too. The camera works with all AI and AFS Nikkor lenses. A shutter speed of 1/2000 is more than adequate for all conditions and film pull/push can be achieved by exposure compensation despite the fact that we can't directly manipulate the ISO setting. It's a perfect camera for novices with its automatic modes, and for advanced users with its possible manual settings. The matrix metering is reliable and accurate, the center weighted metering is good for low light or night photography. It doesn't have spot metering, but it isn't necessary anyway as a real professional won't need a on-camera spot meter. So unless you're in need of a faster flash sync for wildlife photography or a more rugged but heavier body, there're really no reasons to go for higher models.
