(More customer reviews)I bought this camera about a momth ago on newegg for under $80, and for the price it's not bad. It's small, stylish, has a large lcd and in general takes good photos. It uses AA batteries which in general I dislike because they tend to have a worse lifespan compared to proprietary camera batteries but I was impressed with the lifespan of two cheap NIMH rechargeables. I could easily take 150 photos with flash before thinking about recharging. The biggest problem I had with the camera was picture quality. Outdoors in sunlight it takes ok photos but in low lights pictures can turn out blurry even with the flash turned on. In addition there really isn't a macro mode. I tried to use it to take photos of food dishes during a recent trip to a restaurant but the photos didn't turn out well. I think that if you're not willing to spring the extra $20-$40 for a Canon (which I've had excellent success with) then this is a decent alternative.

Olympus D450 1.2MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom Review

(More customer reviews)I started out thinking I was still a year away from affording a new digital camera with the features I wanted. I decided to hold out for a zoom lens and at least 1024 x 768 resolution, or wait. After a lot of research, I knew I wanted an Olympus, because of their excellent optics and their camera-first, digital-device-second approach, and because my Olympus 35mm point-and-shoot had served me well.
I thought my best deal would be on a used or discontinued model; however, because the original price of the 500L, 600L, and 400Z had been so high (in the $800-1200 range), the asking prices for these had not come down as much as I'd hoped, and what I had to be willing to pay had crept up as I shopped. When I saw what the 450Z was going for, I whipped out my credit card. Now that I've played around with it for a few weeks, I can't imagine there's a better digital camera for the money right now. I've compared with a couple of friends that have Nikon CoolPix cameras, and I suppose there's something that's better about them, but I can't honestly tell you what that would be, and the Nikon is twice the money!
The 450Z is an improved version of the well-received 400Z, but at a radically lower street price. Some of this is due to the packaging -- the 450Z leaves out the FlashPath floppy adapter (typically $70-90 alone) that was standard in the 400Z -- but clearly the manufacturing costs are coming down rapidly.
This camera performs incredibly well on the bottom-line measurement: It takes stunningly detailed and accurate pictures under a wide variety of conditions.
We've gotten used to accepting less than perfection for pictures taken in other than bright sunlight at normal distances. The 450Z adds several categories of picture-taking where you can now get predictable results: Flash, macro (including with flash), indoor lighting, low light, etc. There are just enough features to make the camera useful over the range of conditions, but not so many as to intimidate the snap-shooter. Because of the intelligence of the autofocus, exposure control, and white balance, it is still a great point-and-shoot camera.
Many features are related to getting the picture right at the right resolution, such as spot metering, exposure override, mode (resolution), different flash modes, macro, etc. Other features are related to viewing and managing the pictures you've taken. You can plug the camera into a VCR or TV monitor (RCA video jack) and give a quick slideshow of what's in memory. You can get around the small size of the LCD display (and this is one of the better ones) by zooming in on one segment (out of a 3 x 3 grid) of an image, to make sure the detail is there.
One other feature that other reviewers have found important: The 450Z will store images uncompressed, if you choose (the file size is huge); most other cameras up to this point perform at least some compression, even on high-quality settings.
The only thing I couldn't do well -- and this may just take some practice -- is action shots. All digital cameras have some lag between the time you decide to pull the trigger and the time the image is committed to memory, and this takes some getting used to, but the 450Z is quicker in this respect than its earlier counterparts. One significant feature is the "burst mode", which allows you to keep capturing images (about 1-2 a second) as long as the shutter button is pressed, and until the buffer fills up (seems to be about 6-10 images).
Most of us get into digital because of the cost and overhead of dealing with film and processing, only to have to scan prints or pay extra to the processor for digital images from film. Depending on resolution, you can get up to 122 images onto the standard 8MB memory card before unloading, and that's very liberating -- no more agonizing over whether to take another shot! However, once you play around with it a while, the mind starts to boggle at the possibilities, and film cameras seem like Stone-Age technology (especially since we are approaching the resolution of film with the million-plus pixels you can store in an image now).
The 450Z is a milestone in the improvement of digital cameras, a quantum leap in value vs. features and quality, even compared to other Olympus cameras. You won't believe how easy it is to get breath-taking digital photos. Get one!

I was hesitant to buy it because of it's 'newness' and lack of reviews, but I purchased it from a place I could easily return it if I was not impressed. I must say, this camera totally blew away all of my expectations! I have had a number of digital cameras over the past few years, but this one is by far the best. I put it up against a friend's Olympus D-550, which got Great reviews in all the PC magazines, and the Sharp far surpassed it (so much so, my friend is contemplating selling his camera and getting this one). It takes great inside and outside pictures, with or without a flash, and where I have had problems in the past taking pictures of people, this one does an unbelievable job. I would HIGHLY recommend this camera to anyone. It even has a TON of features for the 'high end' serious photographer...

Fujifilm DX-10 0.8MP Digital Camera Review

(More customer reviews)The day after I bought the DX-10 I called Fuji and found it was discontinued. How's that for instant obsolescence? I bought the DX-10, my first digital camera, as a learning tool and it is excellent for that. I was surprised at the quality of the images yet the chintzy construction of the camera body, an ugly. 7oz. plastic box. The DX-10 feels like an empty matchbox compared to a loaded F4, F3 or any lighter Nikon. After I bought the camera I found it eats batteries, so I bought an Olympus charger and four nickel-metal hydride batteries. More money. Also, I bought a special AC adapter, both items a must unless you own a battery factory. Photographers say "There are no photographers at Nikon," because even with a new Nikon, you seem to start out with your own modifications. This DX-10 was like that. I took it out of the box and rigged a neckstrap to replace the silly wrist cord that holds the DX-10 literally by a thread. The owner's manual warns not to scratch the lens or rear LCD screen, yet neither has any kind of protective cap. And a protective carrying case, like the charger and AC adapter is another extra expense. Speaking of extras, buy an extra Smart Media card to boost the 2MB card that comes with the camera. That will only record six images of the highest resolution. I bought a 16MB card, which bumps that number up to 54. Oh yes, the floppy disk adapter that let's you download the images from camera to computer? That's another expense. The DX-10 comes with a cable but it didn't fit my aging computer. To be fair, all these extra costs are no different from my experience with 35mm photography. The price of the camera is just the beginning, just the tip of the beginning. If you've never owned a digital camera, the DX-10 is a good learning tool. I've learned a lot -- much of it what to look for next time I buy digital camera.

(More customer reviews)You know when you buy something, having a high expectation, and when you get it, you're still amazed at how great it is? For me, this happened when I bought this camera. I knew this camera would be small, fast, and loaded with a ton of features, but I didn't know just how great it would be.
I wasn't actually shopping for a 6MP camera, but all of the 5MP compact cameras really didn't cut it. But the combination of features on the EX-P600, combined with the 4x Optical Zoom (16x Digital) and 2.0" LCD said go for it. But when I started using the camera I realized I made a really smart move. Casio obviously spent a great deal of time coming up with an intuitive interface to access everything. In just a few steps you can set any feature on the camera, and the 2.0" LCD screen offers enough real estate to know what your doing.
In simple point and shoot mode, the EX-P600 offers great pictures with little wait time between shots. Auto focus is a snap, and you don't need to think about anything else. I like the Best Shot mode, which lets you select from 25 different presets for optimal results in various settings. Portrait, Nighttime, scenery, etc.. It even has a coupling mode so you can take a picture of your friend, and have your friend take a picture of you, and have it be the same image. No more asking somebody to take your picture!
If you want to get really into it, pretty much everything on the camera- focusing, exposure, white balance, color filters, are adjustable. You can even create custom presets and have it show up in best shot mode. You can not only access everything from a Menu, but it has a quick settings button where you can tab thru all the current camera settings.
Some downsides are the camera doesn't come with an SD card, so you have to buy one separately, which adds on to the price tag. Also, it doesn't come with an AC Adapter, just an external charger, so you have to take the battery out to of the camera to charge it, unless you get the AC Adapter. It also has an "ex" mode where all this data comes up when you take a picture. The plus side is you can see all the settings on the screen, the downside is it looks like you're flying an F-16. But you don't have to have it on, the regular mode tells you everything you need to know.
All in all, if you want a camera to last a couple of years, this is yet. The high resolution 6MP CCD will offer room when higher resolution printers come out, and the advanced feature set will let you have more creative control when you're ready for it, but it's not even too hard to figure out. This is a really smart camera, not just a good one. This camera even has a remote control, so no more running into the picture and wondering when the flash will be for those group shots!

Fujifilm Finepix E900 9MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)For really serious photography, I use a Nikon D200 with the SB800 flash. But there are some times when I just want a small, lightweight camera in my pocket, and the Fuji E900 is perfect for that. Unlike most point and shoots, the camera comes on almost instantly, and the shutter lag is close to (but not quite equal) an SLR. My biggest complaint is the lack of a hotshoe for a hardwired external flash, so I wouldn't use the E900 indoors where a heavy flash is needed. I actually would only rate the E900 at a 4.5 because of this.
The optics are as crisp as any point and shoot that I've seen. There is a bit of chromatic abberation, particularly at wide angle, but it's not too noticeable in most situations.
A huge plus is that you have full manual control of your exposures if you want to or need to do that. In my opinion, a camera has to have that feature if it's to be used for serious photography. But if you just want to point and shoot and have the camera do everything, you can do that too.
Another minor objection is that the camera uses an xD card, so I could use any of the CF or SD cards that I already have. When you buy an xD card, be sure to get an Olympus Type H card, not the slower Type M.
Overall, a really nice little camera, especially for a little over $300.

(More customer reviews)This is a compact, easy-to-use, bring the fun back to photography camera that provides Canon's photo quality in a lower cost, compact build. A little bit bigger than the digital elphs, this camera still fits comfortably in a shirt or pant pocket.
The feature set is very basic, and nothing new. It has a "Face select" feature which lets you select which person you want to focus on in a group. On the dial it has four settings: Auto, Easy, Program and movie modes. The auto mode is just as with every other camera, the camera will select the settings it determines best, but you maintain control (if you care to select it) over the white balance and flash. Easy is the same as auto, except no options. Program gives you the option to select among several "scenes": Portrait, Landscape, Night, Kids&Pets, and Indoor (buried in the menu you can also select lesser used scene settings like Beach, Long Shutter, and Fireworks).
The only negative I've encountered with the camera is the relatively slow processor. That is the power up time (the time between turning the camera on and taking the first picture) is average (about 2 seconds), however, the time between pictures is around 2 seconds without the flash to 4 seconds with the flash. If you envision having (or wanting) to take faster pictures, then this is not the camera for you. Similarly, if you want to have any control over settings (i.e. shutter speed if you want to take pictures of your running toddler) this is not the camera for you.
Bottom line:
Canon replaces control and feature selection for extreme ease-of-use. This camera is a solid option for the money, and in case you are considering the A3000 IS, this (the A3100) is well worth the extra $30 (better resolution and faster picture-to-picture time).
The picture quality is great, no blur and vivid colors.

I've exhibited on and off through the years and have always developed and printed my own black and white film and enlargements. My old Minolta 35MM was getting really old and I was seriously thinking of buying a Nikon FM3 because I love manual control. As the time to buy a new camera got closer, I began to notice the Fuji S3100 at a local store.
While I have never liked the feel of plastic bodied cameras, at least this Fuji was substantial in size. I hate tiny camera. They might be great for sticking in a shirt pocket, but they seem too small to hold and use.
So, one day I'm in the camera store and wow...the Fuji S3100 is on sale at an incredible price. I buy it on impulse.
I think because my expectations of digital photographer were so low, I was able to fall in love with this camera. Like the other reviewer said, this may not be a camera for beginners. While I expected to not understand digital photography in the same way I do understand manual film cameras, I have to admit this Fuji is easy for me to use. I guess I should also say that I opened the box in my car and instantly lost the manual. I was able to figure out everything I needed to know by scrolling through the numerous menus. Though I have to admit it was a relief to find the manual when I cleaned my car.
I just recently went to Toronto and the Fuji was the only camera I brought along. I selected 7 pictures from the trip and had 8 x 10's printed. I could not tell they were digital pictures. They were as sharp and clear and colorful as I have come to expect from film.
I have shot pictures in full auto and in manual. Both produce equally great photos.
All my friends have had digital cameras for a few years and I have seen prints and 8 x 10 enlargements taken with other cameras and I had never been impressed.
The highest praise I can give this camera is that it is the camera that finally lured me away from using my film camera.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this camera about a month ago and have taken approximately 2,000 pictures to date. I've taken indoor, outdoor, telephoto, macro, everything except the video. Sorry I should have played with that too, but it is not the primary reason I bought this camera. I wanted a camera that expanded the capability and control of my small point and shoot camera, an Olympus C-50 (which I am quite pleased with). I am very happy with the results of the S9100.
This is a substantial camera. It feels more like my Nikon 8008, so don't plan to put it in your pocket when you take it on a trip. I have had three Olympus digital cameras and was looking to purchase another Olympus but I was disappointed with their offering in the ultra zoom class.
Because I already had several xD cards it was a plus that this camera gave me a choice of two different media types. I also liked the manual zoom because this camera felt familiar, like an SLR. Using AA batteries was another plus I was looking for. I see some folks say they are disappointed with the battery life, but I haven't found that to be a problem. I use 2900mAh NiMH Rechargeable Battery and I have yet to run out of juice on photo shoots of over 200 pictures. I have not used alkaline batteries, but I understand they do not last nearly as long. I use the EVF more than the large digital display (probably from old habits of 35mm cameras) and that may have something to do with it too. I think the manual zoom has to save a lot of battery power when compared to some of the competition.
There is a lot of discussion about image stabilization, and I never had it in my other cameras, so I don't seem to miss it. I haven't had many blurred photos but I do use a mono-pod or tri-pod when it is appropriate. But even hand held, this camera produces excellent images even up at 1600 ISO. There is some noise, but I don't think it is too bad. Printed photos come out excellent. I have several printers and a large format HP plotter that can produce 36" x 36" prints and I am very pleased with the results.
This camera has excellent versatility, the zoom is great and the macro mode gives you wonderful capability to really get in close. I have been shooting primarily .JPG but have experimented with .RAW. From what I read this format it will extend my ability, but I need more time to learn about RAW processing before I can provide an intelligent discussion. I like the idea that RAW is there if and when I decide to use it.
In conclusion, I am happy with my purchase and would buy this camera again. If you are looking for an alternative to a dSLR that provides a lot of versatility and control this one merits a close look.

Cons:
1.) So far the only thing which isn't so bad is the shutter-lag. My old Kodak use to take super quick pics, this one is still fast, but not as fast as my old camera.
In general, this is a good camera i would recommend.

(More customer reviews)First the bad news- NOISE!!!!! I guess with a sensor this small, there is just nothing you can do about it, short of using a noise plug-in with photoshop. At ISO 100 and 200 this is not a problem- jump to 400 and above and it becomes an issue.
Now the good news- because of the image stabilization, you can choose a lower speed, and minimize the noise as much as possible.
The lens is at least the equal of the one on my Contax TVSIII, which was the sharpest I have ever seen on a pocketable camera.
The internal flash is adequate for most conditions, but if you are takin advantage of the wide format, and trying to get a large room or group more than a few feet away, you should get the Metz compact digital flash which matches with it well.
I took RAW and JPEGs of the same scene and blew 'em up to 13x19 inches. While the raw image was marginally better, the JPEG (with minimal tweaking) was almost as good, and both were quite usable.
If you plan on shooting RAW- bes sure to get a largish high speed SD card.
I love that you can shoot manually, and getting great portraits is a snap- easy to blur out the background and get an incredible sharp portrait.
The preset modes suck.
The screen is great.
If you have a good photo stitching program, and you take a landscape photo with the camera vertically (say 4 or 5 sequential shots), taking advantage of the wide format, you will be floored. With this combination you can print landscapes 48 inches wide. I did this at the Eagles game on Monday night (Eagles won- thankfully!)- and the print was remarkable.
Nobody on the whole planet has the brown leather case. i want one and I want one bad.
Get this camera, be prepared to deal with the limitations of any camera using a small sensor, and you will be a happy clam. You will be able to leave your SLR home more often, and have a great camera with you always so you never miss a shot.

(More customer reviews)When they say "this one's got it all," they mean it! This is certainly an upgrade to what I had before; and there's more features to this that I imaged there ever could be. It's built to last quite some while and it doesn't stint on options. Fortunately, however, I was able to learn how to use it rather quickly; and even the manual is well written! Most manuals are no fun to read but this one is written quite well in plain English and that's terrific. It also comes with a CD-ROM that lets you install the necessary computer software to connect the computer to the camera; the software also lets you register the camera with Sony and copy an extra instruction manual onto your hard drive. Moreover, this camera takes clear images every time and of course that built in flash works wonders. The buttons and dials are easy to manipulate and press; although you do have to be careful to press them using the edge of your finger (or your fingernail) because a few of the buttons are small.
The camera comes on "auto" for those of us who don't want to fiddle too much before taking pictures--but of course there's so much more to this camera than just the "auto" mode. Use the mode dial to access modes for taking pictures on the beach so that the blueness of the water looks as blue as can be, taking pictures when it's snowy to make the snow look a bit extra white, take a picture when the camera detects that someone is smiling, and much more! The control button and one or two other buttons help you to get the flash working under more than one setting, view and delete pictures and again, much more. You can easily attach this camera to your computer so that you can upload photos to your hard drive for storage there--or for posting your pictures to a website which can be incredibly useful and fun. In addition, to preserve the life of the battery pack between charges the camera shuts itself off after roughly three minutes of non-usage; this is a very good feature. I'm impressed.
The camera is capable of taking video clips although I don't think that it is designed primarily for that purpose. However, it will let you record video; the camera has a built in speaker, microphone and a "movie mode" to do this well.
In addition, you'll need to charge the battery pack for about four and one-half hours prior to shooting any pictures so don't wait until the moment you need this to open it up and use it. The memory stick will be ready to go, fortunately. I purchased an eight gigabyte memory stick so that I'll have plenty of space for storing my photos and movies. Be sure to get the memory stick and not the memory card; a memory card may not fit in the slot. At roughly twelve megapixels an eight gigabyte memory stick will hold about sixteen hundred photos.
There is also an internal rechargeable battery that may need to be charged if you don't use the camera for over a month. In case this occurs, make sure your battery pack is fully charged and then insert it so that the battery pack charges the internal battery for twenty-four hours or a little bit longer--while the camera is turned off. That should solve the problem. Sony also has ways for you to contact them in case you have further questions about the camera and how to keep this working for a long time to come!
Overall, I really like this camera; and I highly recommend it.
