Fujifilm DX-10 0.8MP Digital Camera Review

The day after I bought the DX-10 I called Fuji and found it was discontinued. How's that for instant obsolescence? I bought the DX-10, my first digital camera, as a learning tool and it is excellent for that. I was surprised at the quality of the images yet the chintzy construction of the camera body, an ugly. 7oz. plastic box. The DX-10 feels like an empty matchbox compared to a loaded F4, F3 or any lighter Nikon. After I bought the camera I found it eats batteries, so I bought an Olympus charger and four nickel-metal hydride batteries. More money. Also, I bought a special AC adapter, both items a must unless you own a battery factory. Photographers say "There are no photographers at Nikon," because even with a new Nikon, you seem to start out with your own modifications. This DX-10 was like that. I took it out of the box and rigged a neckstrap to replace the silly wrist cord that holds the DX-10 literally by a thread. The owner's manual warns not to scratch the lens or rear LCD screen, yet neither has any kind of protective cap. And a protective carrying case, like the charger and AC adapter is another extra expense. Speaking of extras, buy an extra Smart Media card to boost the 2MB card that comes with the camera. That will only record six images of the highest resolution. I bought a 16MB card, which bumps that number up to 54. Oh yes, the floppy disk adapter that let's you download the images from camera to computer? That's another expense. The DX-10 comes with a cable but it didn't fit my aging computer. To be fair, all these extra costs are no different from my experience with 35mm photography. The price of the camera is just the beginning, just the tip of the beginning. If you've never owned a digital camera, the DX-10 is a good learning tool. I've learned a lot -- much of it what to look for next time I buy digital camera.

Since I'm on a college budget, I needed to get an inexpensive camera so I could take pictures during the Thanksgiving Break. My requirments were at least 2 megapixals and decent image quality. I read a number of digial camera reviews and decided to pick up the Fuji Finepix A205. My first thoughts of the camera was the bulk; it's quite thick but it is light weight. Not something you would want to stick in your pants or shirt pocket though. The buttons on the camera do feel cheap, but it was only $150 so what?
Other than those small gripes, the camera takes excellent pictures but only in well lit environments. Outdoor pictures are really nice. Indoor shots can end up grainy if there isn't alot of light and I mean A LOT OF LIGHT. The flash is only effective in close range (at least 5ft to 6ft) Anything beyond that, make sure the environment is well lit or your subject is close.
Macro mode just takes a press of the button and it works really well. There is also a movie mode, but forget about using it unless the room is very very very very well lit.
Comparing indoor shots taken with the A205 and a 3MP Sony digital camera, the A205 images were less grainy than the Sony's, but the Sony's pictures were brighter because of the better flash.
In conclusion, the Fuji Finepix A205 takes very excellent pictures outdoors and indoors in bright light or when the subject is close to the camera with the flash. I could only give it 3 stars for the poor flash performance.

Fujifilm Finepix E900 9MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom (Black) Review

Fujifilm Finepix E900 9MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom (Black)

For really serious photography, I use a Nikon D200 with the SB800 flash. But there are some times when I just want a small, lightweight camera in my pocket, and the Fuji E900 is perfect for that. Unlike most point and shoots, the camera comes on almost instantly, and the shutter lag is close to (but not quite equal) an SLR. My biggest complaint is the lack of a hotshoe for a hardwired external flash, so I wouldn't use the E900 indoors where a heavy flash is needed. I actually would only rate the E900 at a 4.5 because of this.
The optics are as crisp as any point and shoot that I've seen. There is a bit of chromatic abberation, particularly at wide angle, but it's not too noticeable in most situations.
A huge plus is that you have full manual control of your exposures if you want to or need to do that. In my opinion, a camera has to have that feature if it's to be used for serious photography. But if you just want to point and shoot and have the camera do everything, you can do that too.
Another minor objection is that the camera uses an xD card, so I could use any of the CF or SD cards that I already have. When you buy an xD card, be sure to get an Olympus Type H card, not the slower Type M.
Overall, a really nice little camera, especially for a little over $300.

My dear husband, (a pro photographer) clued me into this camera before it was even shipped from Fuji factory. It compares to the top of the line Nikon Coolpix and Olympus high end digicams costing $800-1,000. But it outshoots all its competitors even though the others cost a lot more $$. I have been shooting this camera for only 3 days now (it was just released for sale last week) and I love it. My husband loves it and is thinking of buying one for himself even though he owns 3 digital SLR cameras and numerous 35mm Nikons. The photos from the S5000 look fantastic even at the 1mb and 3mb sizes. The lens is really sharp and the 10X zoom allows one to compose just about any photo one can envision. The camera fits nicely in the hand, buttons are intuitive and easy to reach, and one can shoot pics one-handed. It is a much smaller camera than it appears from photos, it is shorter than my cricket lighter!
It has a short lag time between pressing the shutter and making the image, as ALL digicams do, but I get around that by using the "best of 5" mode...it can blaze off 5 pics in one second, capturing precious fleeting expressions of my 3 month old son that other cameras would miss. White balance is terrific, skin tones look very realistic to life, metering is right on with what a pro photog would select. You won't regret owning this truly awesome camera. I'm loving it so much I'm ordering a second xd card to take even more pics.
Just buy it!!!

One of the more attractive and durable camera bags I've ever owned in the 40 years I've lugging them around. I bought the Tenba Black Label Small Satchel because it just meets the maximum size restriction for camera bags by museums in our area the allow photography, like the St. Louis Art Museum and the Nelson-Atkins in Kansas City, MO. I've been able to cram into this small bag a Nikon D700 with a 24-85mm f/2.8-f/4.0 mounted, Nikon 180mm f2.8, Micro-Nikkor 105mm f2.8 and 50mm f1.4 plus cable release, two spare batteries, Columbus GPS, flashlight, lens cleaning kit, pencils, filters and more. It will not hold a camera with a longer lens, like the 180mm, attached or a full sized pro camera, like the D3. After two years and many trips, the bag looks like new.

Yes I sold all my DSLR equipment after I bought this camera. It's that good for what I needed. The only negative worth talking about is some minimal purple fringe at extra high contrast type scenes.
I was concerned about focusing accuracy and in low light. The camera excels at both. It has dedicated ISO and EV buttons which are a must. The fast lens is sharp even wide open but sharpens up even more at around f/4-4.5. The new 2/3" sensor handles the 11 megapixels with the associated noise just great. The manual zooming lens is so quick. Just like a DSLR. With all the bells and whistles, extra external buttons and dials it's truly designed like a much more expensive DSLR. The continuous focus and optical stabilazation are simply amazing. Of course with a EV you don't get the speed of a DSLR tracking but I don't need that particular feature.
The highly taughted dynamic range increase is good for a least one additonal stop and possibly two in jpg. Of course in RAW one can process however many they need through HDR.
Frankly I've been waiting for any manufacturer to come up with a not too big of a camera with a true optical stabilized 28-350/400 lens with a 2/3" sensor to keep the lens small enough to keep the weight down but large enough to let in enough light to keep it fast. Also needed a manual zoom and not those slower electronic zoom models that are too slow for me. I think Fuji has delivered the camera of my dreams and I imagine those of others as well.
I've also owned the Panasonic FZ-30/50 which are very special cameras but the Fuji S100fs simply has so many more features the Panny's just can't truly compare. The Fuji clearly has more resolution and FAR LESS noise. At least two stops less.
This Fuji camera is definitely a highly recommend from me. As I use more of the features I'll report back my findings. Anyone who downgrades this camera is only looking for ANY reason not to buy/keep it. Because the bottom line is, it delivers the goods.

I purchased this camera about a month ago and have taken approximately 2,000 pictures to date. I've taken indoor, outdoor, telephoto, macro, everything except the video. Sorry I should have played with that too, but it is not the primary reason I bought this camera. I wanted a camera that expanded the capability and control of my small point and shoot camera, an Olympus C-50 (which I am quite pleased with). I am very happy with the results of the S9100.
This is a substantial camera. It feels more like my Nikon 8008, so don't plan to put it in your pocket when you take it on a trip. I have had three Olympus digital cameras and was looking to purchase another Olympus but I was disappointed with their offering in the ultra zoom class.
Because I already had several xD cards it was a plus that this camera gave me a choice of two different media types. I also liked the manual zoom because this camera felt familiar, like an SLR. Using AA batteries was another plus I was looking for. I see some folks say they are disappointed with the battery life, but I haven't found that to be a problem. I use 2900mAh NiMH Rechargeable Battery and I have yet to run out of juice on photo shoots of over 200 pictures. I have not used alkaline batteries, but I understand they do not last nearly as long. I use the EVF more than the large digital display (probably from old habits of 35mm cameras) and that may have something to do with it too. I think the manual zoom has to save a lot of battery power when compared to some of the competition.
There is a lot of discussion about image stabilization, and I never had it in my other cameras, so I don't seem to miss it. I haven't had many blurred photos but I do use a mono-pod or tri-pod when it is appropriate. But even hand held, this camera produces excellent images even up at 1600 ISO. There is some noise, but I don't think it is too bad. Printed photos come out excellent. I have several printers and a large format HP plotter that can produce 36" x 36" prints and I am very pleased with the results.
This camera has excellent versatility, the zoom is great and the macro mode gives you wonderful capability to really get in close. I have been shooting primarily .JPG but have experimented with .RAW. From what I read this format it will extend my ability, but I need more time to learn about RAW processing before I can provide an intelligent discussion. I like the idea that RAW is there if and when I decide to use it.
In conclusion, I am happy with my purchase and would buy this camera again. If you are looking for an alternative to a dSLR that provides a lot of versatility and control this one merits a close look.

This camera evokes love/hate relationship based on the numerous reviews and comments from users. So the bottom line really is the picture quality.
Prior to owning this I had been an Nikon and Canon SLR user but like many, I also have to adapt to the current trend in using digicams. So before purchasing, I spent a whole month researching through the web, visited shops and get a feel of the current digicams on offer. In my quest for the best digicam for my needs, I have seen their output, held the camera itself and thoroughly inspected everything about them. Besides, Im spending U$600-700 so I really need the best for my needs. In those times, I have seen them all, and finally purchased the S7000.
What about S7000? I must say that the picture quality of this camera is best at 6mp native resolution. Although it is capable of taking 12MP interpolated photos, I would personally skip that because at that resolution it does become noticeable noisy. However, pictures taken at 6MP and below are by far the best amonth the current offerings. I have tested the Minolta Dimage A1, Nikon coolpix 5700, Sony F707 and the Canon and by far the Fuji have the best color saturation, more natural, vibrant and crisp photos among these cameras.
At U$650, you just cannot go wrong with the S7000. The other cameras mentioned here are even pricier and doesnt give all the extras that the Fuji can give.
Right now, I am having a blast taking photos with this baby witout worrying about film development cost. It is a great way to learn the ropes about photography espcially in manual mode because as long as you have the memory, you can practice your skills endlessly.
When I am done with it, I would like to upgrade to the Nikon D100 because despite the excellent features of s7000 it still is not perfect, but the s7000 is way ahead of the current Nikon, Canon, Minolta offerings at this price range.

Ive owned the D200, and controls and build aside, these are two different cameras. Surprisingly, this camera's nearest competitor isnt the Nikon D200 - it is the Canon 5D. Of course, the Canon clearly bests the s5 on resolution as it should. But that's it. The Fuji gives up little else to the Canon 5D but speed.
However, since the obvious comparison is between the s5 and D200, the s5 is clearly superior to the D200 on image quality, particularly right out of the camera. In speed of operation however, the D200 leaves the s5 in the proverbial dust.
The Nikon D200 is sure and fast, very fast. Like all the latest digital Nikon's, they will keep shooting for extended periods. However, the images demand you tweak the camera and do copious amounts of post-processing. The Fuji is more deliberate. It is fast enough to get out of its own way and get the shot and as well as the next, but not fast enough to keep shooting under demanding conditions, at which the Nikon excels. It isnt that the s5 is sluggish, it is that the Nikon is just so fast.
However, once you understand the reason for this relative slowness, you can deal with it. Again, it's all about the images.
The Fuji will produce stunning images from RAW files. It will do beautiful images straight from the camera. If you are a JPEG shooter and hate processing images on the computer, this is the camera for you.
Although the metering is very, very accurate under all but the most backlit conditions, it has a tendency to underexpose the images in anything less than sunlight, so exposure compensation is a must. The good news there, is that unlike most other cameras Ive used, where exposure compensation can be hit or miss - or thoroughly ineffective, compensation is even and responsive. This keeps me from having to fiddle with metering options trying to get the proper exposure. A seriously underrated feature of the camera.
Before the v1.06 firmware update, I was not impressed with the Automatic White Balance, having to constantly change the custom white balance, particularly with street lighting or ANY kind of flourescent lighting. Charged-gas lighting would give a nasty yellow or green cast to the images. After the update, the AWB is stunning, able to handle almost any lighting thrown at it. Since the update, I rarely touch the white balance settings. I simply dont have to. Amazing.
Also, before the update - the images would go "Blue" under strong light and deep shadows, with a deep magenta-ish cast at night. After the update, that tendency has been minimized and the images are far better balanced - giving that true Fuji color without overdoing it either way.
If you get a unit without the latest firmware, upgrade it at once. Period. This update gives me the camera I expected out of the box.
So, the good news: The images are worth every penny you pay.
The only way I can put it - standard, out of camera images often look like HDR images with unreal detail in both shadows and highlight. When you get that characteristic glossy look from a shot, you will involuntarily gasp.
More good news: For low light images, this camera is nothing short of amazing. I shoot primarily at night and in low light, and I rarely, almost never - shoot above ISO 1250. I have shot (using a f/2.8 17-55mm Nikkor) at ISO 2000 in near darkness, and the images came out as if I had studio lights with VERY little noise. And thats another thing, noise is near nonexistent on the vast majority of my images, and what there is has a nice even film-like grain, not blotchy or nasty as you would see on a D200 shooting above ISO 400.
However, all this goodness comes at a price. The high quality images are HUGE. A JPEG file set at the highest quality (FINE) takes up 5 - 7 megs. A RAW file averages 25 megs. This is why the camera doesnt feel as fast as the Nikon, as it is transferring massive amounts of data through the buffer to the card. You will start looking for large and very fast CF cards as well as upgrading your storage in short order.
The camera is expensive compared to the D200, but it is definitely worth the premium if you demand the highest quality images. To bring out the best in this camera, you need the highest quality lenses. It is also murder on sloppy camera technique, so be sure to avoid shake.
In all good conscience, I cannot rate the camera as 5 stars, but it is definitely a 4.5 - 4.75, even at the price.
If I had to choose between the D200 and S5, the S5 wins hands down. In fact, I would get a D2Xs as a speedy backup to this camera, not the D200. My wish would be if Fuji decided to put this sensor and technology into the body of a D2Xs. Then Id probably give it 5 stars.
-----------
(Edit)
So, after 5 months and 35,000 images later...
For image settings I dont fark around with the film simulation modes anymore - too unpredictable. And confusing, frankly.
I leave the DR on Auto, as the camera is pretty intelligent about when to apply it..
I leave the Color on High. Bring the tone up.
I also up the in camera sharpening, which is something I normally avoid. It helps overcome the noise reduction detail loss, and whatever sharpening algorithm they use, it definitely helps the apparent clarity of the images while keeping artifacts to a decided minimum..
White balance - except for yellow walls under energy saving bulbs and outdoor charged gas lighting, I pretty much leave it on Auto. On the latest firmware - it totally handles everything else. Amazing.
As far as camera operation, like the D200 - I find it is critical to learn how to use the AF modes - otherwise you'll sometimes want to blame the camera for focusing issues. Dont just leave it in one mode and forget it.
While shooting under intense situations, keep an eye on the "R" (remainder) number. On the D200 its easy to ignore this. On the s5, you want to keep an eye on it as it tells you the state of your buffer. The camera is fast and responsive until you fill the buffer, then it locks up until the buffer clears.
Ease up on the machine gunning when you see the "R" figure hits the "r02" level, for at "r00" it will lock.
Oh yeah! Tape down the pin caps on the body. Otherwise, you WILL lose them.
Also carried over from the D200 is the dreaded and unpredictable DBS - Dead Battery Syndrome. Sometimes in the middle of shooting, the camera will lock up and the battery indicator will flash as if its dead.
This usually happens with the SB-800 flash and some Nikon AF-S lenses.
Turning the camera on and off when this happen may alleviate, but the trick is to turn off the camera, hit the lens release button and twist the lens in the mount back and forth. That helps with the electrical contacts and keeps this behavior to an annoyance.
What else? Oh yeah - learn to navigate through the menu and know where everything is. The logic is weaker than the Nikon menus, but there is a certain logic to it. That is the main learning curve issue with this camera.
And if you buy an external flash, get into the flash menu and configure it to work properly with the flash, or you will get unpredictable flash performance.
That's all I can think of right now. Im still learning this camera myself. :)
----------
After 15 months and 130,000 shutter actuations
The v1.09 firmware update has pretty much elminated my complaints on sharpness.
I rarely shoot RAW, as the SOOC images are pretty much spot on.
There is a tendency to back focus shooting blindly, the focusing system needs a deft touch.
That said, this is still a stunningly capable camera, highly recommended for those who value image quality to a high degree.

I purchased this daypack to carry my Canon 5D Digital SLR, flash or a spare lens, and a few filters while I'm hiking around National Parks etc.. This daypack exceeded my expectations for functionality, style and comfort. The bottom portion offers great protection for my camera gear, with reinforced padding that can be removed and moved to accommodate my gear. Unfortunately I couldn't fit my 70-200mm lens here, but it did fit in the top portion of the backpack. The top part was great for those extras like purse, car keys, sunglasses etc. There are a good selection of little pockets inside to separate your flashcards, batteries, lens cloth, or whatever. On one hike it rained on me, but everything in the backpack stayed completely dry! I didn't have to use the waterproof cover that came with it. From a comfort level, it was awesome! I can wear it all day and not notice it at all. Padding in all the right places, and good separation from my back to allow airflow. The only fault I found is that the first time I used it, the fabric toggles that are attached to the zippers came off, and the design won't allow me to put them back on. The zippers are a good size though, so I haven't missed them.

The batteries last as much as all the other batteries so its not all bad. The charger does charge the batteries quicker and both in the house and in the car. The down side I have seen so far is that the positive and negative symbols on the battery are placed actually in the wrong spot. Maybe its just the ones I got, but if you can figure out to put battery in backwards quick enough the battery becomes useful. And no there are no safe guards on the charger or battery to prevent placing battery in backwards in the charger other than the LED light. There are no instructions for the LED either so I will give you a hint. There are three colors. Green, yellow, and red. Catch number 2! If you put the battery in backwards the LED will turn green. But if you put the battery in the correct way and assuming the battery is dead the light will start red, turn yellow half way through charge, and when it is finally fully charged it turns green. YES putting the battery in backwards flipping the charge has the same color light as the battery being fully charged. Also if you dont put a battery in the charger but the charger is plugged in the LED will be green. So don't mix up the difference between fully charged, backwards, and plugged in. After you figure out the puzzle it does get the job done. There is no mAh displayed on batteries so there is no defined amount of charge to store. It does have it labeled as a 3.6v battery, even though my original with the camera is a 3.7v battery they still seem to be interchangeable and both work.

You can't beat the price. A couple of bucks, and you have a spare battery for your FujiFilm camera. Unfortunately, the battery doesn't last as long as the OEM. I would say it last about 75% of the OEM battery's life, which is around 1.5 hours. Honestly, that isn't bad. I usually pop it in when my regular battery runs out.

Bought this flash and grip for my fuji s7000. could'nt find one that was specific to this camera but tried this anyway. Results were very very good - night and day difference from using built in flash and set up was very straight forward. Plus side I did'nt have to worry about other flashes having voltage issues or needing adapters. Flash is very quick to be on the ready status - still playing with it to see how long battery lasts but otherwiswe excelent purchase. Took a while to get here but the wait was worth it.

Kit includes: 1) Cameta 2800 Automatic Electronic Flash; 2) Sunpak Digital Camera Slave Grip. >>> The Cameta 2800 Flash has two automatic power settings, a correct exposure verification indicator, a bounce head adjustable up to 90-degrees for soft lighting effects, and energy-saving thyristor circuitry for faster recycling and longer battery life. While most camera's built-in flash units are only effective from a distance of 8 to 12 feet, the Cameta 2800 Flash gives you the freedom to be more than four times farther away. With this much additional flash power, it's almost like having a bolt of lightning at your command. >>> The Sunpak Digital Slave Grip has a comfortable contoured hand-grip with quick-release camera platform and enables the use of the Cameta 2800 Flash as a wireless remote "slave" to complement your camera's built-in flash. The Digital Slave Grip can even be used off-camera with the 2800 Flash as a remote slave for more professional and creative lighting effects. >>> The built-in flashes of most digital cameras emit a "pre-flash" and/or a "red-eye" pulse that fires before the shutter opens, followed by an additional flash pulse which actually lights your picture. This "pre-flash" or "red-eye" pulse confuses other non-digital flash and slave units, causing them to go off at the wrong time, rendering them useless for your digital camera. But the advanced pulse-counting digital circuitry of the Sunpak Digital Slave Grip is not fooled by the "pre-flash." Five LED-indicated pulse-counting and delay-variations are incorporated into the Digital Slave Grip allowing it to ignore "pre-flashes" and fire the powerful 2800 Flash at the precise moment your camera requires. Set it up with your camera's built-in flash just once -- using our included easy-to-follow step-by-step directions -- and you are all set for noticeably better flash pictures from that moment on. >>> Requires a total of 8 AA batteries, available separately.

58mm Lens Hood for Fujifilm Finepix HS10 Review

58mm Lens Hood for Fujifilm Finepix HS10
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this "Tulip" shaped lens hood for my Canon S5, which uses 58mm filters on its lens adapter. Although this hood is advertised to fit the Fujifilm HS10, it will also fit ANY camera with 58mm filter threads or a 58mm filter adapter IF (and ONLY if) the filter threads do not rotate while focusing. If the hood rotates, it might become visble in your photos.
The hood WILL cast a shadow on your flash photos, so rotate the hood so that a small petal is at 12 o'clock or remove it for flash photos.
I have a Sakar Digital Concepts 58mm lens adapter on my Canon S5. I threaded my 58mm UV filter to the back of the lens hood. Then I threaded the filter to my Sakar lens adapter. After the filter is threaded snugly, you can calibrate the precise position of the hood. The hood has a white triangle for alignment. Rotate the hood until the white triangle is pointing straight up at the 12 o'clock position. Then rotate the locking wheel on the hood to lock it into place. This takes a couple of minutes. I intend to leave the hood on my camera permanently. Taking it off and putting it on is time consuming.
After the hood was adjusted, I tested it by taking photos of the sky with the lens zoomed to its widest position. The hood was not visible in the corner of the photos, nor was there any darkening of the corners of photos. This hood is a PERFECT match for the Canon S5 with the Sakar Digital Concepts adapter. It is likely to work well with lenses that zoom out to about 35mm. If your lens zooms to a wider 28mm, it is possible you might see a bit of the hood in the corners of photos...the wider the lens, the more likely the hood may be visible.
Also, my 58mm lens cap clamped securely into the "throat" of the hood so you can use your cap with the hood on.

Was considering upgrading to a D-SLR type camera from my typical point-and-shoot camera, but I have to admit I was intimidated by price and complexity. I found the Fujifilm S8100fd to be the perfect blend of advanced features, price and complexity level. I wanted something that had a good telephoto/zoom lens and this one is awesome. The stability really helps keep things from being blurry and the advanced modes (multi-shot, movie, flash and no flash at same time [sounds odd, read the manual]) are really cool. This camera helps me take better pictures in almost any scenario. Add in an 8GB SDHC card and you have the ability to store thousands of photos and hours of video. Love this camera!
