(More customer reviews)I purchased this camera about a month ago and have taken approximately 2,000 pictures to date. I've taken indoor, outdoor, telephoto, macro, everything except the video. Sorry I should have played with that too, but it is not the primary reason I bought this camera. I wanted a camera that expanded the capability and control of my small point and shoot camera, an Olympus C-50 (which I am quite pleased with). I am very happy with the results of the S9100.
This is a substantial camera. It feels more like my Nikon 8008, so don't plan to put it in your pocket when you take it on a trip. I have had three Olympus digital cameras and was looking to purchase another Olympus but I was disappointed with their offering in the ultra zoom class.
Because I already had several xD cards it was a plus that this camera gave me a choice of two different media types. I also liked the manual zoom because this camera felt familiar, like an SLR. Using AA batteries was another plus I was looking for. I see some folks say they are disappointed with the battery life, but I haven't found that to be a problem. I use 2900mAh NiMH Rechargeable Battery and I have yet to run out of juice on photo shoots of over 200 pictures. I have not used alkaline batteries, but I understand they do not last nearly as long. I use the EVF more than the large digital display (probably from old habits of 35mm cameras) and that may have something to do with it too. I think the manual zoom has to save a lot of battery power when compared to some of the competition.
There is a lot of discussion about image stabilization, and I never had it in my other cameras, so I don't seem to miss it. I haven't had many blurred photos but I do use a mono-pod or tri-pod when it is appropriate. But even hand held, this camera produces excellent images even up at 1600 ISO. There is some noise, but I don't think it is too bad. Printed photos come out excellent. I have several printers and a large format HP plotter that can produce 36" x 36" prints and I am very pleased with the results.
This camera has excellent versatility, the zoom is great and the macro mode gives you wonderful capability to really get in close. I have been shooting primarily .JPG but have experimented with .RAW. From what I read this format it will extend my ability, but I need more time to learn about RAW processing before I can provide an intelligent discussion. I like the idea that RAW is there if and when I decide to use it.
In conclusion, I am happy with my purchase and would buy this camera again. If you are looking for an alternative to a dSLR that provides a lot of versatility and control this one merits a close look.

Domke 701-82S F-802 Reporter's Satchel (Sand) Review

(More customer reviews)The Domke F-802 is exactly what I was looking for in a satchel style photo bag that holds a serious amount of equipment for a days work, easy to access, carry and lays against your body while giving me balance (I sometimes use a cane in one hand to steady myself while walking). Here is what I have put in my bag so far: A Nikon D90 with a Nikkor 16-85mm F3.5-5.6 lens and a MB-80 battery pack attached (may take this off when using this bag); a Nikon Kit 18-105 lens; a Nikon 50 mm 1.8 lens; a SB 600 Speedlight; 2 lens hoods; a flashlight; extra batteries; cards; some manuals; and a Canon G9. And I still have room.
I have also ordered, but not yet received, one 2 compartment and one 3 compartment Domke insert for this bag, but I don't think I will need them. I should also tell you that there aren't any velcro strips on the walls of this bag like the other bags in this line. I really like the versatility this bag offers you.
Why? Well the F-802 doesn't come with inserts the F-803 does.
Upon receipt of the bag I placed my equipment in the bag with the lenses enclosed in the padded bags that came with them. This arrangements works fine If you don't mine the lack of padding. I did, however, place a thick strip of extra padding in the bottom of the bag even though this bag is padded on the bottom and the sides.
I am comfortable with this arrangement because the Domke F-802 is made of heavy water resistant canvas and is well made. I have use and own other Domke bags for years and no equipment has ever been damage in them and I use and carried them literally everywhere. I plan to use this bag to carry my Nikon on day trips and as mentioned earlier I found that satchels and messenger bags lay great against my body giving me the balance I need when shooting without a tripod and generally while carrying this equipment.
I had the Domke F-X5 large messenger bag but it didn't have the pockets I needed and I returned it. Pockets are everything. Did I mention I still had room in this bag for my Macbook. Although I will ( but don't need to) to take the MB-80 battery pack off the camera to allow for a better fit. Domke bags wear well over time and soon conform to your body. I believe this will be one of my favorite Domke bags. I will rate the Domke compartment insert when I receive them.

(More customer reviews)I received this camera last Friday. I had 2 full days to take great shots with this camera. I purchased two bundle kit, which comes with 18-55mm lens as well as 50-200mm lens. I have another manual focus lens, which is A50.7.
One of the most asked questions about this camera is AF speed. Yes, AF is pretty quick. To test AF speed, I sometimes turn focus ring to opposite direction and checked the time it takes to set the focus. It was usually less than 0.4s. Even in low light situation, it worked fine. I took many shots with only one small table light in the living room so, ISO was 6400 and shutter speed was 1/4. Camera doesn't seem to have any problem for AF. Nice thing as a entry level camera is that it supports up to 11 AF point and you can choose your AF point. Some may say, it lacks super impose. However, simply touching 'ok' button reveals current AF point in the LCD screen. So, that's not a problem. AF is sharp and accurate. In MF mode, camera indicates the right focus in two ways both sound and indicator. So, there's no problem using manual focus lens. in Liveview mode, Camera magnifies focus point to assist you, which is very useful since viewfinder is very small.
High ISO support. This is the best part I like about this camera. It supports up to 6400, and can be expanded to 12800. I took several shots outside around 6:00 PM. My friends used flash but my K-x didn't require flash. with 3200 or 6400 ISO, it still gave me clean bright pictures. Pentax did a great job reducing noise, especially color noise. It's hard to find the noise from the pictures. Now, 3200 is something you can use everyday. Actually, scene mode for the kids uses very high ISO to get 1/1000s or faster shutter speed. Thanks to that, pictures for my kids are all sharp and crispy.
User interface is very intuitive and simple. Since this camera is small, most of the buttons are within reach of your thumb and index fingers. Though it's small, grip is ergonomically designed so that camera is very stable in your hand. It has one auxiliary button (green button), which you can assign other functions. It has drive mode, ISO, White balance, aperture and flash buttons. It also has dial to navigate menu faster.
It uses 4 AA batteries and this is really nice. You can use your Ni-MH batteries or Lithium-ION batteries. It your camera is run out of juice, you can go nearby stores and buy one quickly. I took about 250 shots and I didn't need to recharge yet. Camera recognizes battery type automatically and optimizes the operation.
with all the bells and whistles, I think Pentax K-x is super buy for the beginners. Not only it has all the features needed, it outperforms higher grade DSLRs in certain area like low noise. Thanks to great compatibility for the mount, even 30 years old lens can be used for this fresh new DSLR. It was quite fun to look at postings to sell old, student film camera kit at bargain price and you can use lens out of it. I also got 50mm fast lens which is excellent to take portrait shot from used market.
A few updates.
1. Some folks reported battery compatibility issue. Below is the blog of Pentax USA President. He recommended user to put batteries and wait for a few seconds so that Camera recognizes the type of batteries.

2. It also reveals a few problems related to Shake reduction. First, it produces noise from magnet handling CMOS censor. Bad thing is, this noise is recorded in movie mode. K-7 also has same issue but it supports external microphone. K-x doesn't allow that so, this can be one issue.
3. It also shows color overflow problem under low light situation, especially red and blue. When there's bright light, for example traffic signal, red color or blue color spread around as if it overflows.
A few users reported above problems to Pentax R&D and they are supposed to return by 11/9. I hope firmware upgrade will fix those problems.

(More customer reviews)This is the best SLR that I bought in 94' and there's only one that's better which is the Nikon F5.
And I'll explain why for some it may still be the best. Unlike F5, much of the operation is through manual dials, very similar to F3. It's faster, because you can check & change any setting without turning the camera on. And when you do turn it on, it's fast. Autofocus has only one point, but it's accurate(more so than alot of the multi focus point models) This means, you seize the moment(with minimal delay)
This camera is a beauty, when you hold in you hand, you'll feel how solid it is, everything is where they should be at your finger tip, it's uncluttered design is very utilitarian. The shutter is robust(still functioning like new, after 16years!) It's quiet, versatile(takes 4, 6, or 8AA batteries, depending on what grip you choose to use it with) The pentaprism view finder can be switched to accommodate action finder, waist level finder for doing low angle shots, magnifying finder for macro works... you can really customize this to whatever your needs are. Personally I found the original high eye point finder, DP-20 to be very sufficient. I've done a lot of low light shoots, where being able to see, and focus through the finder becomes important(I avoid the AF light/beam from being emitted, so I don't startle/distract my subject, and I get a very uninterrupted natural feel)
Did I mention how efficient it is why batteries? I get almost twice as much shots as the comparable Canon pro model, because much of it is analog dials. Minolta being on the other extreme(hence they are glitchy, and slow to start up... and you'll miss the money shot)
It works with all the older Nikon lenses, flash.
Okay so, here's the stuff you may not like, it's built solid like a tanks, and it also weighs like one.. this actually helps you to steady it for ulta-slow shutter speed shots, much like a rifle. Also it has a big grip, so small handed people may not like it(it's best to hold the camera and check it out, before you buy one, because things will become obvious immediately, even when they sound good on paper(as Minolta/Maxxum did)when you hold it, something will fit, and others will feel awkward, or won't work like you want it to, trust me it's very personal)
Whatever you do don't skimp on the lens (ever!) or film... because those and your imagination is what creates an exciting photo. Camera is just a clever box, with a shutter.
That said once you buy this or other camera,
Enjoy photography whatever you choose, and worry less about equipments.

Zeikos ZE-WA58B 58mm Wide Angle Lens Review

(More customer reviews)Ever since I picked up my Canon VIXIA HFS10 camcorder, I've wanted to add a wide angle lens converter. Of course, the macro converter that Canon sells (the WD-H58) is pretty expensive and since I wouldn't use it very often I couldn't justify the cost.
Then I noticed this Zeikos lens and thought at this price it was worth a try. I'm pretty happy with it.
First, it looks great on my camcorder. It doesn't look cheap, and matches the style and look of the Vixia HFS10 very nicely. It comes with a "fit on" cap for the Wide Angle end of the lens and a "screw on" cap for the attachment side.
It does what I was looking for, expanding a bit on the angle I can capture up close and extending the range of imagery that's in focus on a longer shot. The main thing I wanted was to be able to shoot a bit wider up close, since I sometimes use a green screen in my office and can't get my camera back very far from the screen. Though I was hoping it would go a bit wider than it does, this definitely helps.
I'm not exactly sure what the .45x means, since as far as I can tell (based on measuring the relative size of objects with and without the lens on) this really gives about .8x magnification. I assume it may have to do with the fact that what you really have here is a "Macro" lens + a .45 Wide Angle lens and the net effect is to give a .8 magnification. What I didn't know when I bought this is that the "Macro" component of the lens and the "Wide Angle" component are separable. With the "Macro" filter alone you can get VERY close to objects like flowers and insects - and you can ONLY focus on things that are very close (between an inch or so to about half a foot). If you wanted to fit only "Wide Angle" component onto the Vixia HFS10 you'd need another adapter. Anyhow, the roughly .8 magnification of the whole set up is not quite as wide as I'd hoped but it does mean there is pretty minimal curvature effects around the edge of the frame - if you look closely at the attached video you'll see there is SOME curvature at the edges, noticeable on the right and left hand sides when the converter is attached.
Anyhow, I wondered why Canon only sold a .7 converter when you could get an inexpensive .45 converter from another company - I assumed to begin with that was because .7 is as far as you can go without vignetting (change in light levels from the center to the periphery) or fisheye-like curvature, and so I worried a bit that this lens would show those effects. Luckily it doesn't show them to an unacceptable degree, but what my tests suggest is that this lens with its roughly .8 magnification is probably pretty close to what you actually get with Canon's own lens, and their numbers likely assess the "true" conversion rate of the lens as a whole, whereas the .45 only applies if you were to use only the "Wide Angle" portion of the lens. (If anyone knows more about this than I do I'd love to read about it in the comments.)
One thing that is probably evident from this footage is that with the lens on there seems to be a slight loss in the light levels. That's to be expected, but it's something you can compensate for in the settings. I can't compare this to Canon's own lens, but since I picked this up at less than 10% of the cost, and it does most of what I wanted from it, I'm not complaining.

SLIK PRO 700DX Professional Tripod with Panhead (615-315) Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this tripod based on reviews I read on the net, and was not led astray at all. The Pro 700DX is well made, very sturdy, very tall, and light for it's overall size. It is made with high quality, black powder coat castings. The main casting tying the legs together is built with very clever, well made 3 position leg angle locks that are all metal in construction, lock in place with authority, and are simple to operate with with one hand. There is nothing in the way of cheesy parts anywhere on this tripod. It reeks of "pro-gear" quality and feel.
The pan head is rated for 15 pounds of equipment, and though the tripod itself can carry much more weight, the combination is a nice one. The pan head has nice controls, has two useful bubble levels built in, is built to high standards, and utilizes the Slik "Quick Shoe" system to full advantage. I have used many tripod systems over the decades, and have used many quick release plates as they came to market. Nobody has come up with a system that can beat the round plate system that Slik has on the market now. Not even the expensive European brands. It is secure. A camera or flash can be mounted in seconds even in total darkness,and the camera or accessory can be rotated on the head a full 360 degrees while securely locked onto the head, and before snapping the position locking tab shut. I bought 3 additional quick shoes that now live on my camera bodies, and long lenses. There is nothing else like it.
Ball head fans (I'm one) can swap out the pan-tilt head for the Slick ball head 800, or any other ball head on the market in about a minute. Both the standard and short center columns come with reversible threaded studs to handle most heads that might interest you.
The legs and center column are rather large diameter round units that have two lengthwise grooves built in to securely locate the leg sections, and keep them from twisting. It's an elegent way to get the strength and light weight of round tripod legs, as well as the twist free virtues of box section legs. The legs and center column are made of a titanium alloy, and seem to be much more rigid, stronger, and lighter than common aluminum legs. The finish is nicer as well, and I expect a better service life from this alloy over aluminum parts.
One thing that the photo here does not show is the replaceable black foam sleeves that cover the top leg sections. They make for a nice feel, offer protection to the tripod when it's bouncing around in the trunk of a car, probably damp a little vibration, and just plain look nice. The leg extension locks are typical high quality Slik quick action lever designs that are a pleasure to adjust. They are made of tough plastic, and if history is any indicator, they will last forever.
The best feature of this tripod for someone tall (I'm 6'5") is it's height. With the legs fully extended, and center column down, it is solid as a rock, and I can look through the viewfinder without bending into an uncomfortable position. With the column extended, I'd need a stepladder to look into the viewfinder. Based on internet reviews, I ordered the short center column when I bought the 700DX. It offers enough height to do any field work, is reversible like the standard column, and allows the tripod to get real low for solid macro work at ground level.
I simply can't think of another tripod at twice the price that is built as tough, offers as many features, or anywhere near as much value as the 700DX for an SLR shooter. Carbon fiber is lighter, but costs more, and isn't as durable. This tripod is an awesome value.

Nikon N70 SLR Camera Review

(More customer reviews)I have to admit that I am biased. I only ever use Nikon products. I have an F3 and an 80008. I purchased the N70 for the built in flash feature (so I wouldn't have to lug around my SB-24) and to have one nice do it all camera to take on vacations, etc. without having to take my whole camera bag with F3 or 80008 bodies. Well, I've shot a wedding, a trip to Spain, and, well, you get the idea. Haven't even needed to pickup the other two. The nice thing about the N70 over the N60 (which is also a great camera) is that the N70 still has the synch port. I wouldn't, of course, trade my F3 or 80008 for studio work or other stuff, but for one compact camera for taking on trips, etc. this camera is great. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it isn't a professional's camera like the F3 or F4 or N90, but this camera is fantastic and more than enough camera for most people.

At 7mm by 3mm, Nikon's cross-type autofocus sensor module has an extra-wide focus detection area that swiftly locks onto a moving subject. The autofocus can detect subjects in light as dim as EV minus 1 (at ISO 100). The N70 also offers both spot and wide-area autofocus--the latter is especially handy when you want to loosen up your composition.
The Nikon N70 uses 3-D matrix metering for incredibly accurate exposure. An SPD (Silicon Photo Diode) sensor divides scenes into eight segments; the N70's microcomputer then reads the light pattern for data on brightness and calculates contrast to put out optimum exposure value. The Nikon N70's built-in speedlight flash uses a five-segment TTL multi-sensor for optimal flash balance.
In addition to standard program, manual, and shutter- and aperture-priority modes, the Nikon N70 offers bracketing and a useful mode called flexible program, which lets you shift the combination of shutter speed and aperture normally set by the program mode.

(More customer reviews)This is a superb lens. It is exactly what it says it is... It has a VERY useful zoom range. It is VERY fast focusing. And it has VR. But ignore the reviews that suggest that VR is the same as a 1.2 or 1.8 lens -- It is not. VR allows you to handhold in much dimmer light than you could normally handhold a lens by compensating for minor hand tremors. But your exposure, being longer, can no longer "freeze" moving objects, like kids. So while your image is stabilized, your subject is not. VR is a GREAT benefit, but it cannot replace a 1.2 or 1.8 lens that gives you the faster shutter speed, rather than trying to compensate for a slower speed. VR also costs far, far less than a very, very fast zoom. This lens is a joy to use, very, very sharp and contrasty, and has produced for me many great shots. If you understand what image stabilization is, as opposed to a truly fast lens, you will love this lens.

AF 100mm f/2.8 AT-X M100 Pro D Macro Lens - Nikon Mount Review

(More customer reviews)After renting the Nikkor 105 VR and testing the Tamron 90mm, I realized that each of these lenses can make superb close up images. The Nikon was just overpriced, frankly, and its VR doesn't come into play with really close work. The Tamron is quite similar in function and form to the Tokina but was fifty bucks more. After buying the Tokina I just laugh at the notion that more money gets you anything qualitatively and functionally better. Why? Because AF can only get you in the neighborhood for most close up work and you'll need to manually refine your focal plane anyways. At this point you might as well invest more $$ in lighting and other gadgets to improve your output rather than follow a name brand. If you are in the market for a sharp macro lens, get the Tokina and you'll see what I mean.
