ND Gradual Filters: Often it is necessary or desirable to balance the light intensity in one part of a scene with another. This is especially true in situations where you don't have total light control, as in bright contrast landscapes. Exposing for the foreground will produce a washed-out, over-exposed sky while exposing for the sky will leave the foreground dark and under-exposed. Cokin graduated gray ND filters are part clear, part neutral density. They allow the transition to be blended into the scene, often imperceptibly. A ND.6-to-clear, with a two stop differential, will generally compensate the average bright sky-to-foreground situation and is also the most popular density of the series. 121L - 2X Light starts with the same neutral density as 120, but feathers the grey almost from the color edge and more gently graduates to clear. One stop of compensation. 121M - 4X Medium is the same gentle graduation as 121L but with twice in density. Requires 2 stops of compensation. 121S - 8X Soft is twice the density of 121M and the graduation extends to 3/4 of the filter. Requires 3 stops.

Hoya 58mm RM-72 Infrared Filter Review

(More customer reviews)After reading reviews all across the web, the concensus was that this is the best all-purpose Infrared filter for photography - digital photography in my case. It is also a reasonable price. I ordered mine and got it quickly, and tried it out right away. The user photos above are ones I took when I did some of my first tests.
On a tripod and with the proper settings, this filter does what it is supposed to and does it well. It darkens the sky and lightens the foliage (Woods effect). It gives images an otherworldy appearance that many find appealing.
I know that I will be using it quite a bit for my nature photography. Thank you Hoya!

(More customer reviews)Moisture and finger prints are repelled like non-stick cooking surfaces. This doesn't mean fluids won't stick, but you can often just blow them off with your breath. Wipes down really easy.
Haven't whacked it to test it's durability, but other reviews say it's pretty tough stuff. I'll update if I ever find out, but I hope I never do.
Coatings seem to work great and I don't get any more ghosts/flare with it than without it (this is with a Nikon 35/2AF lens). I'm contemplating these for my other glass, but they're kinda pricey, so I'm in no hurry.
Good gear though.

Zeikos ZE-UV72 72mm Multi-Coated UV Filter Review

(More customer reviews)...but you sure can't tell by looking at it.
The purpose of multi-coating is to reduce reflections from the surface of the glass. These filters appear to have the same reflectivity as a plain piece of glass. And, unlike every other multi-coated filter that I own, reflections from this Zeikos filter are untinted. As far as I know, that's pretty much impossible with a true multi-coated filter.
My conclusion? Either the filters I received have serious manufacturing defects or somebody is shading the truth. Since other reviewers have commented about the lack of tinted reflections, I'm assuming it's the latter. Both filters (the 52 and 72mm) have been returned to Amazon for refund.

HOYA 52MM Circular Polarizing Filter Review

(More customer reviews)This is a proper polarizing filter. It has a marking line on the forward (rotating) half of the filter, so you can keep track of the angle. Rotating the forward half is what changes the shadows reflecting off of the subject. It is also a true circular polarizing filter (I verified this myself). This is necessary for use with the autofocus systems of SLRs and Bayer filters over the sensors of DSLRs.

(More customer reviews)I was hesitant at first, but I figure for under $8 and with fulfillment by Amazon I could take a risk. Plus, I was using a gift card that was about to expire to pay for everything anyway. The upshot is that for less than $8, the Zeikos CPL does a good enough job of cutting glare and reflections, while also giving me some optical control over color saturation. Is it a perfect CPL? No, of course not. Does it reduce image sharpness? Well, what do you think, it cost less than eight bucks--but surprisingly that reduction is fairly negligible.
While it's not a perfect CPL, I'm perfectly happy with what I got--a very usable circular polarizing filter. And while it might reduce sharpness a little, it does not do so intrusively and the loss is far shy of what I'd expect from such a low priced filter. I'd happily use this filter for snapshots of landscapes, beach scenes, wildlife, and other types of general or vacation type uses. If you need to print something that looks professionally done, then you'll have to weigh the gain in color and reflection control over the very minor loss in sharpness. If you're not a pixel peeper, you probably won't even notice any loss of sharpness.
Bottom line: If you're not a professional shooter and are looking into trying out the fun filled world of filters, you could do far worse than investing in a Zeikos CPL.

Tiffen 72mm UV Protection Filter Review

(More customer reviews)The product felt strong, solid, and well put together. The glass was clear with no visible tint or imperfections. Although this and another filter (same type different size) both arrived with smudges on the glass. The smudges were fairly easy to wipe off, but I suspect the items are either not cleaned before packaging, or I received someone's returned item. However, I had to return this item since they DON'T contain any anti-glare/reflective coating on them. When shooting towards a light source (light bulb, tv, sun, etc) a green reflection of the light source would appear on the recorded image. The green reflected image was caused by a reflection bouncing off of my lens's green tinted anti-glare coating which was bounced right back into the camera by this filter. If your lens isn't coated in an anti-glare coating the result will be even worse.
Instead I picked up Quantaray filters from a local Wolf Camera that were coated with the anti-glare. They only cost a little more, and the green reflection is now gone. Make sure you look for a filter with the anti-glare
