Digital Concepts PG-200/D80 Deluxe Power Grip with Shutter Release for Nikon D80 Camera Review

Digital Concepts PG-200/D80 Deluxe Power Grip with Shutter Release for Nikon D80 Camera
Average Reviews:

At this price point it is probably worth 5 stars. From a functionality standpoint it gets 5 stars. Aesthetically it's pretty average, so I'm only giving it 4 overall. This was a gift that I probably wouldn't have chosen for myself, but it has been a very pleasant surprise. Would I recommend it to a friend? Absolutely.
Functionality is surprisingly complete for vertical/portrait shooting. It has front and back control wheels that duplicate the functionality of the camera's. Likewise a shutter release and AE/AF lock . The shutter release is a little softer than the one on the camera but easy to get used to. Finally you can turn the grip buttons off, while the on body controls continue to function.
Electronic communication just works. The camera seems very happy talking to the grip. When I ask the camera about the status of the battery it recognizes that there are now two batteries (Li-on en-el3e which I already owned) and gives separate, accurate, info about each battery.
Build quality feels light but sturdy. It looks a little big for the D90. It does mate up nicely with the body of the camera, the tripod mount screw works as it should, but it just seems a little fat to my admittedly small hands. If you have big hands the size may be a postive for you. On the plus side it has 'rubberish' texturing that is identical to that on my D90 so it looks like it could be OEM. My biggest gripe (and this is a non-issue functionally speaking) is that the door over the batteries can still be jiggled even when the door is firmly latched. All in all, one star off for these niggles.
I haven't tried the included Ni-MH adapter but I would expect it to be limited more by the quality of the batteries used than by the grip. It doesn't include any batteries, Li-Ion nor Ni-MH.
I believe in going name brand for body, lens, and filters. But this 3rd party grip works and isn't going to effect image quality one way or another unless the aesthetics and/or soft shutter release drive you bananas.

Works for me.

Nikon MB-17 AA Grip Battery Pack for Nikon N65, F65, N65, N65QD Cameras Review

Nikon MB-17 AA Grip Battery Pack for Nikon N65, F65, N65, N65QD Cameras
Average Reviews:

The MB-17 adds some mass, balance & area to the N65 which although a good camera, is a little too light & small for my preferences. My hand has more area to grip comfortably, the balance is improved with larger lenses, & although not in fashion these days (like film), the extra mass actually helps stabilize the camera. It's a great alternative to having to use expensive, non-rechargeable, non-environmentally friendly CR-2 batteries. It uses 4 AA batteries, either rechargeable (NiMH work great) or alkaline. Nikon's usual construction quality is evident here. It's plastic but it is solidly made. Good shape & fit. Great price!

If you are going to be taking alot of pictures or video with the Nikon D90, this battery pack makes all the differance. Instead of just one battery in the standard slot, this pack gives you 2x the battery life along with an additional shutter trigger on the side of the grip, making it easier to take vertical images. The extra 16GB SDHC memory card, the SDHC card reader and other couple extras like the portable charger finish the kit off as a nice little bundle for a very affordable price. Opteka Battery Pack Grip / Vertical Shutter Release for Nikon D40x, D40, D60, D3000 & D5000 Digital SLR Review

Opteka Battery Pack Grip / Vertical Shutter Release for Nikon D40x, D40, D60, D3000 and D5000 Digital SLR

Having just received this grip, it was time to bolt it on and see just how 'bad' the fit actually is. I for one, take negative reviews lightly, especially those authored by amateurs (non-pros), many of whom seem to have problems with everything.
As it turns out, the Opteka D40/D40X/D60 Grip is very well made indeed! A full 1/4" thick hard plastic molding - practically indestructible. The machined casting is made to very close-fit tolerances, requiring exact alignment (it can take a bit of patience). Once positioned correctly (there is a tight-fitting dowel hole to mate to the body), the grip fits snug and flat. It looks very well mated to the contour of the D40/60 series body.
I popped in 2 1800 mAh Li-ion batteries (3600 mAh total) and it was a somewhat different camera! Moving the single battery from the battery chamber down into the grip, along with another, adds additional weight, and also lowers the center of gravity of the entire assembly. Now my Nikkor 18-70 & 70-300 (heavy) lenses feel much more at home hung on this more-stout little DSLR!
The included pop-out infrared diode works well with the camera receiver. Contrary to others who cry about 'what a pain..menu settings..', it is quick, simple, and efficient. Simply press the fn button on the front of the camera body, next to the lens mount, when taking a vertical shot, and pop out the infrared sender in the grip. On the D40, D40X, and D60 cameras, the fn button defaults to infrared/2 second delay (no menu needed!!). Thus, when the vertical button on the grip is pressed, the camera will set aperture and shutter, auto-focus, (depending on your other settings), and click the shutter. It returns the fn button back to off (default) after exposure. What could be easier than that?
All in all, a great addition for those who are looking for more body bulk (I'm talking about the camera!), lower center of gravity, better heavy lens balance, more serious pro-like looks, easier vertical shot triggering, and several times the power available, this is a really great add-on. I recommend it highly - do it, you'll like it!

Opteka BP-D80 Battery Grip for Nikon D80 & D90 Digital SLR Review

Opteka BP-D80 Battery Grip for Nikon D80 and D90 Digital SLR
Average Reviews:

I got this product about April '08. I'm quite pleased with it. Most reviews rate it higher than the MB-D80 from Nikon. I get two batteries in the camera, while the third charges. The lock ring tightens very well on mine (read about others having problems) if you put a little umph on it.
The AA battery insert is a nice feature for emergencies. The shutter button on it is not quite as smooth as that on the camera. I'd like to see that improved. I get the sub-command dial and the command dial in the vertical position. It also has a power switch for the grip, to save a little bit of juice when not in use.
The feel is well built and sturdy. It is lighter than I expected, but not cheap feeling at all. The rubber grip appears to be well made and has stood up well to many long hours of sun, heat, and sweat. I have a sure grip even with the sweatiest hands. The ability to have a second battery is easily worth the price of the unit. The only thing missing is a second card slot!
The instructions aren't the best, but what's to know. Plug in, turn on. Not quite as sturdy feeling as my old Canon grip, but tougher than it seems at first and well made. The shutter button could use a little work, though.
Four Stars!

I don't expect to have anything at all go wrong with this type of an
accessory and so far it works great.
For me the ability to have the second battery online alone would justify the cost. My grip rarely comes off because I like the added size, weight and feel much more with it mounted than I do using the camera alone. In particular when using a Nikkor zoom or even the 105mm micro. Just balances everything out very nicely and gives me a more secure feeling holding the camera.
Note that it has a slot to store your battery compartment cover from the D200 that keeps that piece secure and easy to find when you decide to use the camera without this attachement.
That is one example of the thought Nikon put into this grip. Another would be the AF button and shutter release placed just where you need them for vertical capture.
People have asked so I might as well mention that I feel just as secure mounting this unit to the tripod as I would mounting the camera directly.
Great menu interface! You get seperate readings for each when you access Battery Info via the Set Up menu. Information displayed includes the percentage of charge for each unit plus the overall status of each battery. Status being indicated by the left to right scale showing overall condition by a needle wavering in between New and Replace. Above that and on the same screen are a L and R column for each slot showing percentage of battery power left. You also get a number representing how many shots have been taken with each battery!
Something to think about before you write a review about the battery and claim others lack understanding!
Included is a plastic tray that accepts eight various AAA batteries for use when the stock EN-EL3e units you use are drained. This is for when you just have to keep shooting. The way I use this tray is to carry spare batteries most likely intended for the SB800 flash unit. It does that job very well!
Good luck!

This item is a substitute for 2 of the normal, rechargeable battery packs. In other words, it won't fit in my camera where the normal, single battery pack does. It will only work with the MB-D80 multi-power battery pack. I'm disappointed that I couldn't figure this out on my own before purchasing this item. Looks like a well made item and would have received 5 stars if there was a better description/product images available.

This is the standard charger that Nikon sells for use with the D40's EN-EL9 battery. The title incorrectly shows it is for charging the EN-EL5. That battery will NOT work with this charger -- the contacts won't line up.
If you do need it for the EN-EL9, it works very well. I'd appreciate a shorter power cord for travel use, but it is detachable so you can switch it out.

Average Reviews:

This is a very nice accessory for the D80 camera. The main deal with it is that you can either equip it with two D80 batteries, or you can use it to power your D80 with several AA batteries--a nice thing to be able to do in a pinch.
The MB-D80 is built from strong impact plastic of the same time of which the D80 is made. This makes it relatively light, which is nice. You can add this to the D80 without making your camera unduly heavy and unpleasant to carry. And having two batteries rather than one is nice when one is taking a lot of pictures in locales where it is not convenient to recharge one's batteries frequently. And I like the shape of the MB-D80--it provides a nice shape and heft that makes the D80 more nifty to hold. Portrait shooters will appreciate the extra command dials and the vertical shutter release.
The thing that I especially like about the MB-D80 is that it provides the D80 with metering for each battery; one can see precisely the status of the batteries in the D80 when using this grip.
Overall, many serious D80 photographers will enjoy and appreciate this fine accessory.

Nikon MB-D10 Multi Power Battery Pack for Nikon D300 and D700 Digital SLR Cameras (Retail Packaging)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When using the MB-D10 with the D300, you will find that it is a great improvement from the MB-D200 (the D200 vertical grip). For one, it is made of magnesium alloy, and is much sturdier. It is also weather sealed like the D300 body. It fits nicely and firmly with the D300. It also has an additional multi selector, which is a great added feature. The MS-D10 (holder for AA batteries) also comes in a very nice pouch. Of course with such improvement comes the price increase as well!
If you want to achieve 8fps on your D300, you can use the EN-EL4/a battery with your MB-D10 or AA batteries (8 pieces). The ability to use AA batteries is a real plus point. Imagine having a long trip where you may not have access to charge your EN-EL3e batteries. Having the ability to use AA batteries means that you can carry a bunch of them and still be able to shoot... even deep in the wilderness.
Another advantage of the MB-D10 is that it is not L-shaped, which means that you can easily slip it into your camera bag and pull it out when you need it. To mount the grip, you do not need to remove the battery from your camera and marry the grip to the camera as how the D200+MB-D200 was designed to. It does not take as much space and not as awkward as grips that are L-shaped. This is a versatility of the MB-D10, but also has some getting used to.
Here are some areas which either you like or hate or take some getting use to:
1. The battery in the camera need not be removed to use the grip. So for those who leave the grip on all the time and want to use 2 batteries at a time, it would mean that you would need to remove the grip each time you want to remove the battery in the camera. It would be nice to be able to swap both batteries without having to remove the grip, but the design is such and we would have to live with it. What I've decided to do is to remove the battery in the camera and just use the one in the MB-D10. Besides, you can get a lot more shots with the D300 than the D200 for the same battery charge.
2. The shutter release button on the MB-D10 is a bit too sensitive, which means that you can quite easily trigger the shot. The sensitivity between the shutter-release button on the camera and the grip is different, so when switching orientation of the camera, you'll need to be aware of the sensitivity so that you do not accidentally take a shot which you did not mean to do so.
3. The MB-D10 can take the EN-EL4/a battery. However, the battery chamber cover for the EN-EL4/a is not part of the package, and you would need to purchase it separately. The battery chamber cover is BL-3.

Nikon MB-D11 Multi-Power Battery Pack for Nikon D7000 Digital SLR Camera (Retail Packaging)
Average Reviews:

The Nikon D7000 camera has pro performance capability, but lacks the larger pro body of cameras like the D300s. Some may not find this a problem, but I have large hands and I find the smaller body of the D7000 is not as comfortable to use as a larger body. The excellent solution was the Nikon MD-D11, which is a combination vertical grip and battery pack. Two battery trays are supplied, so you have the option of using either one Nikon EN-EL15 battery or AA batteries. You also have the option of keeping a back-up battery in the camera body as well. A soft case is supplied for the tray you are not using, but it is too small for the grip itself. The grip pack has some of the same controls on it as the camera body, but the main controller is a joystick rather than the round pad type used on the camera and is great for selecting focus points in vertical or horizontal position. The grip is well made of lightweight metal alloy that has a rigid solid feeling. The grip area and bottom is covered in rubber and the bottom has a screw hole for use with a tripod.
Conclusion: The Nikon MB-D11 grip/pack is a high quality accessory that improves the handling and comfort of the D7000 to such a great degree that I leave this lightweight grip attached to my D7000 all the time now, even when I don't need the extra battery power. It's a little expensive, but it is well worth having, especially if you have large hands. Highly recommended!
