Kata KT DT-213 Digital Torso-Pack Review

After doing some rough traveling with an unsuitable camera bag (the bag itself is very good; the use I gave it was wrong), I decided to look for something more adequate for those times when I am hiking with my camera, need to get in and out of cramped places, etc. I didn't want a regular camera backpack because of the weight and size issue, and also because I knew that I'd end up with it slung crooked on one shoulder so that I could easily reach the camera -- which is no good for a back that is not 100% on its better days.
The sling pack, aka torso pack, seemed like the ideal solution because it is MADE to be carried on one shoulder. In the Kata DT-213's case, specifically on the left shoulder (more on this later). Turned towards the front, it sits exactly where I need it to, so that I can reach in and grab my camera at a moment's notice. On my back, it is a comfortable little backpack that I hardly remember is there. The shoulder strap's length can be adjusted, so it doesn't matter if you have a longer or shorter torso. It is well padded and comfortable. Also, if I want, an adjustable and removable waist strap keeps the sling pack in place on me when I'm moving around.
Its zipper opens and closes quickly and with no effort, as it is a double one on either side of the flap, linked by a sturdy nylon cord. On the extremity there is a velcro tongue and also a plastic snap (which in my case is rarely closed), keeping the equipment safe and snug. The main compartment is surprisingly spacious. The larger division accomodates my Olympus E-30 + mounted 50-200 mm SWD f/2.8-3.5 perfectly. The two smaller divisions take the 11-22 mm lens, the EC 2.0 teleconverter and my flash. The two padded dividers can be moved or removed to resize the compartment and/or the divisions.
There are three outside zippered pockets. The roomier one will carry several memory cards and spare batteries. Another in the back lies flatter, so is only good for money, passport, etc. And a third pocket on the shoulder strap takes a cell phone, recorder or MP3 player. On its surface is a metal ring to which I can hook on my water bottle or geotagging GPS. The whole interior is bright yellow. This is something I love about Kata bags, because they never turn into black holes: you can always see in there and find what you're looking for.
As is standard, build quality and materials are first rate, and attention to detail is total, up to the rain cover. The whole bag is padded and I really feel my equipment is safe in it. I think I have found the perfect bag for day photo trips, finally.
The left shoulder issue: When I took the DT-213 out of its packaging, I thought, "Uh oh". I am left-handed and thought that carrying the bag on my left shoulder would make it awkward to remove the camera quickly. I do have to open the zipper with my right hand, but taking the camera out works equally well with either hand. Another detail, and this one for women only: no problem at all between the shoulder strap and my chest.
Sept. 2010. This bag has been everywhere and back and has proven itself sturdy, comfortable and practical. I've taken it on zodiacs and small boats and despite not ever putting the rain cover on, my equipment never got wet. It was also handled quite roughly a few times, and it has resisted very well. More importantly, it has protected my equipment perfectly. The 5* rating holds true.

Love this. I live in the Pacific NW and if I could only shoot when it is dry, well...let's just say it wouldn't be that often. Plus I found that the extra length (when smaller lenses are attached) allows me to easily see the display on the back since it's in the dark. It's convenient to carry and to use.

Zing 503-301 PBK1 PRO SLR Cover (Black) Review

Zing 503-301 PBK1 PRO SLR Cover (Black)

This neoprene SLR case is perfect for cameras with a shorter lens. I purchased both this one, and the same LONGER model for telephoto lenses. This accompanies me on shorter hikes or bike rides when I want to use my smaller, compact lens, without other equipment.
It's easy to remove and install. I use it with an Olympus E3 and extended battery pack; pancake lens, or 12-60mm lens. It's better to use this, than travel with a bulky case. Even when I bring my bulky case along, I have my camera zing-covered, around my neck; therefore, I don't have to go in and out of my bag to retrieve.
Note: Because most of my shooting is outdoors, even though my camera is fairly weather safe, and this case is too, I bring a small, folded rain cover [tucked inside this neoprene case], as a precaution in case of severe weather.

I got this Item a few months back, have used it quite a few times since.
When you use it handheld it is a bit hard to adjust the lens or look through the viewfinder, but you can make it work.
It is mainly made for use on a tripod I guess.
I could not have wished for anything better, regarding the price and I am happy that I got it.

The cover has elastic cord & cord locks on both ends. Slip the camera into the back end of the cover and attach the small end of the cover around the lens. Sport Shields are designed to protect professional Cameras and Lenses from adverse weather conditions such as wind, rain, salt air and sand. They are designed to accommodate and protect most SLR film and Digital Cameras.Sport Shield Rain covers are manufactured using a versatile, high performance and multi-layer barrier fabric system. This design seals the fabric with a series of coatings or layers that prevent driving rain, water, snow or dust from entering the fabric. The Multi Layer Barrier Fabric System sandwiches the textile. The outside faceis treated with a TEFLON® water repellant finish preventing surface absorption of water, dirt, dust and oil. The inside surface is coated with THREE successive layers of a specially engineered formula which combine to create a tough, durable and permanent waterproof system.Independent textile testing indicates an exceptionally high hydrostatic head averaging 10,000+mm (160kpa). It requires more than 10 meters of vertical water pressure directly on this fabric before any penetration could occur. The special coating will stay waterproof for the life of the garment.Tests conducted show an average breathability of 8,000 grams of water vapor per square meter of fabric per day. For comparison, leading waterproof fabrics rate between 3,000 and 5,000 grams per square meter per day.Accommodates: CANON 24-70mm f2.8 L24-105mm f4 IS28-70mm f2. 8 L28-300mm

Kata E-702 Large Digital SLR Camera Raincover Review

Kata E-702 Large Digital SLR Camera Raincover
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before I purchased the Kata E-702 raincover, I packed my digital SLR and sports lens away whenever the rains came - which meant lots of missed photo opportunities when shooting sports in the Pacific Northwest. Now that I have the Kata raincover, I can shoot high school and select soccer games in a constant downpour and not worry about getting my equipment wet. It fits a Canon 20D with battery grip and 70-200mm f/2.8 lens perfectly - and keeps my hands dry and warm as well. If you use a longer lens (100-400mm, you'll need to get the E-704 extension as well - but for sports, if it's raining, the chances are you won't have enough light anyway to use the bigger lens due to the heavy cloud cover. The E-702 is a snug fit (zippers won't close all the way) when using a Canon 1DMIIN and the 70-200mm lens.

I really like this product the only thing that is kind of weird is you have to put your hand through the sides and pull them tight to have a seal around your wrist but it definately does a great job and you can use it over and over again unlike the rain sleaves that are kind of disposable. I plan on using this until it breaks down and doesn't do the job anymore which I don't see happening for an extremely long amount of time

Op/Tech 18" SLR Rainsleeve for Digital & Film Cameras with Lenses up to 7" Diameter, 18" Long Review

Op/Tech 18 SLR Rainsleeve for Digital and Film Cameras with Lenses up to 7 Diameter, 18 Long
Average Reviews:

I bought a pack of these sleeves to use when shooting outdoor sports in the rain. I'm not a pro photographer and couldn't justify the expense of the superior Aquatech rain gear. I needed something small and light that fits in my camera backpack and keeps me shooting during poor weather conditions I occasionally encounter.
If you do a lot of shooting in questionable weather and can justify the $200 cost, the Aquatech is obviously a better solution. But for $6, the Op/Tech sleeves are hard to beat in a pinch, particularly for casual photographers.
The sleeves are large enough to cover most all but the largest of the pro telephoto lenses. It fits my D300 with battery pack and 70-200 2.8 with room to spare. The sleeve has a hole in the rear - just remove your eyepiece cover, stretch the hole over the eyepiece, and replace the cover to hold it in place. The sleeve has a drawstring closure in front that holds very securely to the lens hood. The plastic is transparent and thin enough to allow operation of all the controls right through the sleeve (vs, sliding your hands up inside). It's a very usable solution, although it does make adjusting the zoom a bit more difficult. But again, this is intended to be more of an emergency or occasional rain solution.
I've spent endless hours shooting football games in the rain and the protection provided is excellent. As long as you don't poke a hole in it, your equipment will stay dry. I'm able to reuse them multiple times.
Pros: Very low cost, stores anywhere, excellent protection, low tech ease of use, able to see all of the camera's controls, works with tripods and monopods.
Cons: Takes a few minutes to put on and get adjusted, makes accessing some controls a little awkward (but not impossible), far too long for short lenses.
Bottom line: Excellent emergency protection during occasional bad weather for cameras with larger lenses. Those using smaller lenses should look for another solution.
