Transcend 1 GB 80x SD Flash Memory Card Review

Transcend 1 GB 80x SD Flash Memory Card
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this 80X SD Card for my Canon SD450, and it's working great. I researched a lot about high speed SD cards and found this the best value for money. Also, I compromised with a 1 GB card because I think it's quite enough.
I have used several cameras (using SD, XD cards or sony's memory stick), and each time I have been transferring the pics there is a very long pause. NOT anymore! On a USB 2.0, transferring the first 150 pictures (each 2+ MB) from my camera to my computer took less than a minute.
For those of you who don't know 80X equals 80 X 150KB = about 12 MB per second speed. I am sure faster cards will give better performance but I don't think you need anything faster than this for the money you pay. Also, shooting using the burst mode (taking 15 pictures in less than 8-10 secs) was a breeze. I researched a lot for these cards and I think this is a good deal. I bought it from one of the outside vendors at Amazon (thememstore) and they gave me good service for a good price.

Pentax K2000 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 DA L Lens and AF200FG Flash Review

Pentax K2000 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 DA L Lens and AF200FG Flash
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros:
High quality (sturdy feeling)
Well designed
Superb Image quality
No pattern noise at high ISOs (looks more like film grain)
In body image stabilization
Cons:
No image orientation sensor (if you hold portrait style have to manually rotate)
No red focus confirmation dot (still has green dot in viewfinder at bottom)
Who should buy the K2000? Anyone also considering entry level Nikon or Canon DSLRs. This is fully competitive, but offers in body image stabilization that works with any lens (old and new). Nice feature set at a great value.
The auto focus of this camera is improved, focusing more precisely in low light than previous Pentax models, and also works with the new SDM lenses. Auto white balance is also improved. It does much better under tungsten light than some previous Pentax cameras.
The shake reduction is highly effective, as much so as most in lens systems. About 3 f-stops for me. This is a handy feature because it works with ALL lenses. You don't have to keep buying the same feature for $100 to $500 every time you buy a lens for which you want stabilization. Not to mention, when a new body comes out you get an improved stabilizer. With an in lens system, you have to replace your lenses to get improved stabilizers.
Even though this is a no frills system, it is very capable for those advanced amateurs or pro's looking for a compact body to use with the Pentax Limited prime lenses (compact lenses offering outstanding image quality). The big two haven't invested many resources in prime lenses suitable for APS-C sensors (by far the best selling dSLRs), Pentax has bucked the industry trend with their superb DA Limited series lenses.
Image quality is outstanding. I used it at a studio shoot recently, and had no issue. My only complaints were the lack of user selectable focus points (besides all or center only) and lack of orientation sensor. For the most part these were easy to work around. The picture results were stunning, even up to ISO 800. By 1600 there starts to be a fair amount of noise, but there is no pattern to it (my K20d has awful horizontal pattern noise). These photos are highly suitable for B&W conversion, and they resemble high speed film better than many digital cameras.
In conclusion, you get a lot of bang for you buck with this camera. The bundled AF200FG flash is very good compared to any built in flash offering much better range, better fill, and being off camera helps reduce red eye and shadowing from lenses. The kit lens is excellent at apertures 5.6 and up at any focal length (it is a tad soft at the corners at wide angles at apertures larger (smaller number) than f/5.6. I mounted it to the K20d and it had no problems resolving for the higher resolution sensor. I recommend this without many reservations (see my cons), and for a starter or enthusiast it is a great little camera. With my review title, it is the first time I can feel comfortable to recommend a Pentax to a non-DSLR user (previously they have been better enthusiast, non-beginner models).
Update One: First set of batteries that came with the camera have more than 1000 shots on them, many of these with the flash. This has truly amazing battery life, especially considering how much the back LCD is illuminated (no top information display). This would last many users a year!
The only other little things I have noticed is there is no slot for a cable remote and the back LCD can be bright. This camera wouldn't be the best for star trails for example, but this will only impact a small percentage of users.
I still love it!

Pro-Optic Multi-Coated 1.4x Tele-Converter for Nikon Autofocus SLR Cameras. Review

Pro-Optic Multi-Coated 1.4x Tele-Converter for Nikon Autofocus SLR Cameras.
Average Reviews:

Of course you're not going to get a Nikon quality lens or teleconverter of high quality for an item this cheap, but if you have, say, a 200mm and want that extra range on occasion, this item will do fine provided you have good light conditions. I don't see the point in buying a $400 accessory that you use maybe twice a year, so if you are a nature photographer or sports photographer, this isn't for you, but for photographers who might want to photograph their local sports team or do some photo taking while hiking and not in need of professional, stock quality images, this will suit the bill. And carrying it in your camera bag won't make you as nervous about cracking the glass as would a high priced item.

Placed between the camera body and lens, a teleconverter contains a set of optics that will effectively increase the focal length of a lens by a factor of 1.4 times. Pro-optic converters are made with high quality multi coated optics and designed to electronically operate with the camera contacts. Designed specifically to be used with prime or zoom lenses of 100mm or above. 1.4 will increase a 300mm into 420mm and will decrease the lens with 1 f/stop. Focusing manually is recommended when using a lens with a f/stop of f4 or slower. Longer exposures will require a tripod for stabilization

Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR AF-S DX Nikkor Lens + Nikon 55-200mm f/4.0-5.6G VR AF-S DX Nikkor Lens for D40, D40x, D60, D80, D200 & D300 Digital SLR Cameras (Lenses Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.)
I bought this lens to replace a Nikkor DX 18-55. Actually, to replace 2 of them.
I shoot with Fuji Pro S3 and Pro S3 UV/IR. Twice, while on the camera, the Nikkors, with their plastic lens mount, have broken off the camera. (Once in the case & on camera and once outside of the case - and around my neck - while photographing the recent inauguration. I decided to chance the Sigma and 'lo and behold' it came with a metal mount. It is much more durable for the active user.
Focusing is quick and images are sharp. it does the job of a pro lens well.
If you baby your cameras (obviously I don't - I work with them) the Nikkor DX 18-55 is fine. When it breaks, consider the Sigma as the replacement lens.

Vivitar DF340ZN DF-340Z Flash for Nikon Review

Vivitar DF340ZN DF-340Z Flash for Nikon
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For less than half the cost of the cheapest Nikon flash, I really did not expect a whole lot. My rating therefore is partly based on the low cost of this product. I decided to get mine from a non-camera store that starts with the name "Wal" simply because they had the best price going! The flash was cheap enough that I could risk purchasing it even though there were no reviews for it so far. I really needed the bounce functionality to get some decent indoor shots of our baby and avoid the "deer in headlamp" looks of a straight on flash. This flash fulfills my needs in this regard. It also seems to have fairly good range outside (far exceeding the built in one of my D-40), but I am yet to test exactly how much with the lens that I own (18 - 135mm). I'll post some bounce flash pics soon. Most turned out really good.
Pros -
1) I've only taken about 2 dozen pictures with this flash. None came out over-exposed. Some indoor bounce shots taken at telephoto came out slightly to significantly under-exposed (I think thats expected considering the small apertures on the lens at 135mm), while the wider angle shots came out fine. i-TTL implementation seems to work quite well (in i-TTL, camera controls the duration of flash - making for correct flash exposure). Using this flash therefore is a no-brainer with compatible camera's.
2) Charges up in a flash. For almost all indoor shots - where the flash is not being used at full power, only a portion of the stored charge is used. Its almost immediately ready for the next shot.
3) Manual zoom head works as expected.
4) There is a green light to tell you that the camera was able to expose the shot correctly.
5) There are two modes - one for correctly exposing both the background and the foreground and the other for just the subject of interest. Choose the two modes using a slide switch.
5) Made in Singapore (not China).
6) Another thing to remember is that Vivitar really made some good flashes in the past - till they fell on hard times with the dawning of the digital age. Maybe, this is their attempt at crawling back on the scene. If so, I'm all for more products like this!
7) Flash head zooms from wide to tele and also turns and swivels. Meaning you can turn the camera sideways and still bounce your flash off the ceiling.
8) Standard NiMh batteries work fine. I have "flashed" this about 50 times so far (including my presses with the test button), so could not tell you how long the batteries last - but Vivitar claims in excess of 200 flashes to a set of batteries.
9) Camera focuses well with the built in focus assist function on the flash that projects a red patterned beam.
10) Controls are well labelled. Decent attention to detail - for example, inside the battery compartment.
Cons -
1) Manual has many grammatical errors.
2) Its large in size - almost as big as my dimunitive D-40 it seems. With 4 AA batteries supplying all the juice for fast recharges, thats to be expected I guess.
3) The plastic used does not exude the kind of quality of its more expensive siblings, but it ample for the purpose.
The cons are really minor. I'm pleased with my purchase. 4 stars for the product itself - but another star added for its low cost.

Nikon Capture NX Software for Windows and Mac Review

Nikon Capture NX Software for Windows and Mac
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was one of the first to download the full-featured Nikon NX software on a trial basis in July 2006. I was immediately hooked. This is a very innovative software program that most photographers who shoot in NIKON RAW format will want.
For those not familiar with RAW format, essentially a RAW format photo file enables the photographer to make post-shot changes to a photo to a much greater extent than is possible when shooting conventional JPEG file shots. So, for example, if one wishes to adjust the exposure on a RAW photo, you can do so and the effect is essentially the same, within the range of a couple of F/stops, as though you had shot the picture that way in the first place (there are exceptions to this beyond the scope of this review). The same is true for many other settings, such as Color Mode (SRGB versus Adobe, for example), White Balance, Sharpening, etc. You can modify some of these to some extent on JPEGs, but when you do there is always a loss of data--while there is no such loss when modifying RAW files. The bottom line is that if you botch a setting shooting RAW files you are much more likely to be able to salvage the photo if you shot RAW, as compared to if you shot JPEG. If you are shooting a wedding or some other critical event where failure is not an option, only a VERY competent expert would not opt to shoot RAW, in my opinion at least.
Capture NX enables the photographer to make very significant enhancements or adjustments to RAW, or to some extent JPEG or TIFF images. The centerpiece of the program is what Nikon calls "Control Points." The program enables one to place control points at various locations on a photograph, and thereby control or modify the color of selected portions of the image. What is even more amazing is that the program also enables the user to make very fine selective adjustments to other effects, such as sharpening or D-lighting, such that only selective parts of an image will be sharpened, for example.
Other programs have offered the ability to do what Nikon Capture NX can do, but in my opinion I have seen no other program that is so intuitive, and so easy for the photographer to learn. Many photographers, especially non-pros like me, want to spend more time taking photographs and less time behind the computer in the "digital darkroom" modifying them. Capture NX is designed for precisely that--it really is very intuitive and easy to learn.
I found the NX user interface to be better than that of Capture 4.4, which NX replaces. Others have differed on this point, but I very quickly became comfortable with the more orderly layout on Capture NX.
There are a few areas in which version 1.0 can stand some improvements in future upgrades. Certain menu options stubbornly return to default settings rather than remain at the user's last (and usually preferred) setting. Despite the good user interface, there are a few areas that will stand some tweaks in future upgrades. In short, NX V1.0 has a few rough edges as first-release versions of software usually do. Nonetheless, in most respects this is a polished product that certainly is ready for "prime time," in my opinion at least.
Like Capture 4.4 before it, Nikon NX want a LOT of memory. A fast CPU and at least 1 GB of RAM is recommended.
Overall, this is a remarkable product that I highly recommend to any photographer who shoots in Nikon's RAW format.

Nikon D60 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only) Review

Nikon D60 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this camera for my sister. She has taken amazing photos with a point and shoot and needed to step up to a DSLR. This was the cheapest nikon body on amazon at the time (refurbished from Cameta Camera). I currently shoot a D200 and the D60 doesn't have all the features I'm used to. However, it was everything I expected and takes beautiful photos. The lack of an auto focus motor does limit the camera, but the number of AF-S lenses available are continually growing.
The ability to have a 10megapixel sensor DSLR amazes me. You can make HUGE prints from this camera that are pro quality (but the camera itself won't give you the skills of a pro photographer). This body is tiny. Sitting next to a larger p&s its only slightly larger. Only having 3 AF points takes away some ease of use you get with the higher end bodies but they do focus sharp and fast.
My current favorite AF-S lenses for these non focus motor bodies would be #1 Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras. It gives the focal length of a 50mm on a film body. Perfect walk around lens and auto focus motor built in. This lens is awesome for portraits and still life.If you can only buy one lens right now, buy this one.
#2 Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S ED VR II Telephoto Zoom Lens for Nikon DX-Format Digital SLR Cameras This lens goes from wide to telephoto. You can keep this lens on the camera all day for most people's needs. On the down side, it costs twice the street price of the camera. #3Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S VR Zoom Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras. If you are buying a camera system to take pictures of your kids playing soccer, you need this lens. It is tack sharp for outdoor sports and gives you plenty of reach. Its also great for bird or other nature photography. Its a little heavy but much lighter, less bulky, and less costly than a 70-200 f/2.8.

MADE Products CA-1111-SMK SLR Camera Armor for Nikon D80 Digital SLR (Smoke) Review

MADE Products CA-1111-SMK SLR Camera Armor for Nikon D80 Digital SLR (Smoke)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Camera Armor is a rubber body glove designed to protect the Nikon D80 from impacts and scrapes. It includes a rubber shield to protect the front of one lens as well as a plastic shield for your LCD screen.
Installation of the armor is pretty simple. You need to remove the neck strap to put it on but that is easy enough. After you play with it enough to get it solidly in place, the rubber fits the camera snugly with no bulges. It also stayed solidly in place and was not prone to random movement. Most of the controls are left exposed but a number of buttons are covered to improve the structural integrity of the armor. These buttons are articulated into the armor and the label is likewise molded into the rubber button. The problem is that the label molded into the armor is black-on-black whereas your camera has white lettering against the black button for far superior ease of reading. Some of the controls are also too close to the edge of the rubber so it is not as easy or comfortable to use them. The armor also encroaches on the space that tripods attach to and many tripods will no longer have room to mount properly if the armor is on.
Once the camera armor is on, you'll finally get an idea of how much protection it offers. Unfortunately, the product description badly overstates the case. On a positive note, it should provide excellent resistance to scratches. The rubber armor should also provide small protection from impact but you need to be realistic about this. Any hard impact against rock or concrete will pose just as much chance of major damage as a camera would face without the Camera Armor.
The lens protector is similarly limited. Once on, it will completely block the threads a lens hood attaches to and so you will be completely unable to use one. Getting filters on and off will be very difficult with this on and even adjusting a circular polarizer is awkward.
In summary, Camera Armor offers legitimate protection from scratches. If this is important to you, then you may find value here. In return, you will be forced to give up the use of filters, lens hoods, ease of use for your camera, and most likely the ability to use a tripod. For most photographers, this is an unacceptable level of compromise.

I wanted a reasonable quality, small, lightweight "walk around" lens, at a reasonable price, and it has been great for me. First of all, I must admit that this is only my third digital camera, and first digital SLR. But it isn't my first SLR ... I have used a Canon Elan IIE for a number of years, and trust me, that camera is no slouch.
But enough about me ... the D50 is the real star of the show! I have had the camera (along with the standard lens included with the kit) and so far I am extremely happy. I purchased it just in time to capture some photos of my new neice, and my family swears that the pictures that I was just casually snapping at the hospital look like they are professional portaits. Granted, some of my family members ... well, their necks are pretty tan, if you know what I mean, but you get the point. The camera has a slew of modes that are ideally suited to your subject (portraits, action, etc etc), and they do a great job of making all of the fine adjustments that improve the overall quality of the photo for the non-experts. But this camera has varying levels of automation to where you would practically require a photography degree to get your picture. My skills are somewhere in between, but trust me, if you are an absolutely beginner, in 5 minutes you can be taking photos that are 99% of the quality that a pro with a $5000 setup would take. Now you might need to snap a few dozen shots to get just one that is amazing, but that is what is just wonderful about digital cameras. And with a huge, super sharp LCD preview window, you can see in an instant if you have a decent shot, and if not, delete it and try again!
The camera takes the small "big-toenail" SD memory cards, which is a departure from what you will typically see in a digital SLR. I personally like the smaller size; otherwise, I don't believe there is a significant difference. If you pick up one major point from this review ... READ THIS !!!! I initially tried shooting with some SD memory that I had been using in my MP3 player. It worked fine, but if shooting a series of rapid shots, it would take the camera what seemed like a couple of seconds to write to the memory. That is typical with all of the digital SLRs that I have read about ... you get maybe a dozen high-speed shots, and then the camera sort of "bogs down". And most of the time that is fine. But this camera takes advantage of the slightly more expensive "pro" SD memory, which can be written to at extremely high speeds. Because of this, the camera can take an unprecendented number of shots (I believe 137 according to Nikon)!!! Folks, that is amazing, let me tell you. You can just hold the button down and fire away, and capture all of the high-speed action that you can imagine. No more excuses for missing that perfect action shot. Sure, you aren't going to require this feature very often, but it is nice to have, just in case. And even with normal shots, the high-speed memory seems to work much quicker than normal memory.
The camera can save files in three different size (resolution) levels, three different JPEG quality levels, and the complete uncompressed RAW format. I've been shooting using the medium resolution and medium JPEG quality, and the photos look sharper than my old Canon 35mm SLR. You could easily print out 8 x 10 photos and they would look perfect even at the medium quality setting; poster size would look fine at the high quality setting.
The rechargeable battery that is included is simply amazing - I believe they rate it for 2000 shots, and I believe it. It would be VERY diffult to drain this battery in a single day, even with numerous flashes and auto-focusing shots.
The fast auto-focus, very user-friendly menus, flexibility with all Nikon lenses, and near-pro quality at a price that the weekend-photo-warrior consumer can afford, I don't see how you can go wrong with this camera.
Happy photographing!

The Nikon D50 is a photographer's digital dream come true. Combining Nikon's advanced SLR technology with the simplicity that many point-and-shoot digital camera uses have come to expect, the D50 offers a wide array of features that will satisfy both the weekend picture taker as well as the serious photographer who is looking for an affordable digital SLR solution. For starters, the D50 features a new 6.1 effective megapixel Nikon DX Format CCD image sensor and a highly advanced image processing engine that team together to create truly faithful image files of up to resolutions of 3008 x 2000 pixels. Continuous shooting at 2.5 frames per second can be maintained for bursts of up to 137 pictures, making action photography a reality. Pictures are instantly processed and recorded to the photographer's compact SD memory card (not included). A Hi-Speed USB 2.0 interface supports faster transfer of images when connected to a compatible computer. With the D50, your shutter speed choices extend from 30 seconds to 1/4,000 second. An automated high-speed flash sync speed up to 1/500 second makes high-quality fill flash photography possible, and you also have the option of manually controlling the bulb setting for long exposures. Auto ISO maximizes available light by automatically setting ISO-equivalent sensitivity across the available range of 200 to 1600, but photographers also have the option to set the ISO sensitivity manually for greater control.Best of all, the D50 allows you to use any one of Nikon's professional-grade AF and DX Nikkor lenses. The AF Zoom-Nikkor 28-80mm f3.3-5.6G that's included with the D50 features one aspherical lens element with a high-performance Nikon Super Integrated Coating that delivers superior color reproduction while minimizing ghost and flare. A rounded diaphragm opening with seven blades makes out-of-focus elements appear more natural, and the aspherical lens element minimizes distortion, especially at the periphery area, for superior optical performance. Compact and lightweight with a comfortable, well-balanced feel, this wide angle-to-portrait zoom lens is ideal for travel landscapes, scenics, and general family photography.Approaching Point-and-Shoot Simplicity For those who want professional-quality images but without having to think about the settings, the D50's scene-optimized Digital Vari-Program modes simplifies the picture-taking process and frees you to concentrate on capturing those special moments. Selecting one of the seven easily distinguishable icons from the handy exposure mode dial optimizes otherwise complex settings and produces consistently remarkable results. The Child Mode, for instance, makes it easier to take memorable pictures of the little ones complete with ideal vivid color and contrast -- ready to print beautifully without the fuss of later adjustments at the computer. Other modes include Auto, Portrait, Landscape, Child, Close Up, Sports, and Night Portrait. Among the many features that make the Nikon D50 an exceptional digital SLR choice are:
2.0 inch 130,000 pixel TFT LCD with adjustable brightness
Supports JPEG, RAW (NEF) and JPEG + RAW (NEF) file formats
Lightweight but strong polycarbonate body over a metal frame
Built in, five-mode popup flash and external flash hot shoe
Included CD-ROM loaded with PictureProject software
The compact, lightweight design of the D50 makes it easy to carry on any outing, and the camera's on-screen menus present clear and helpful user information in plain language on a large 2.0-inch LCD monitor. The high-capacity rechargeable lithium-ion battery helps extend mobility and convenience by delivering the power to shoot up to 2,000 images on a single charge. In short, the D50 delivers the professional-level quality of an SLR of this class but with many of the convenient automatic features that can make photography so fun. What's in the Box Camera body, rechargeable Li-ion battery EN-EL3, quick charger MH-18a, video cable, USB cable UC-E4, strap, body cap, eyepiece cap DK-5, rubber eyecup DK-20, accessory shoe cover, PictureProject CD-ROM; 28-80mm lens: lens, LC-52 snap-on front lens cap, and rear lens cap.

I recieved my lens with my D70 kit and have used it for the past year and a half. The 18-70 is a great lens, particularly for outdoor photography. Indoors, it is a little more limited due to the variable aperture but works well when used with flash. The zoom range and the silent wave focus are the best features. Stopped down, the lens is also quite sharp.
My shooting with this lens was predominately landscape and event photography, and has really produced some nice pictures. I've since upgraded to a 17-55 f/2.8 lens due to the better low light performance, sharpness and build quality, but aside from a little barrel distortion and light fall-off at 18mm, the 18-70 is no slouch. I'd recommend it as a light travel lens or a good starter lens.
