Bushnell Legend 8x42 Waterproof Binocular Review

I was looking for binoculars that I could use for birding and to take on safari in Africa. These binoculars are light enough and their field of vision is great. They work wonderfully during low light which will be great in Africa since we are out early in the morning and late in the evening. I have used them for birding already and I cannot wait to use them in Africa.

Canon WP-DC300 Waterproof Case for S30, S40, S45 and S50 Digital Cameras Review

Canon WP-DC300 Waterproof Case for S30, S40, S45 and S50 Digital Cameras
Average Reviews:

This case is great for underwater work. I have taken it to 120 feet and I has held up fine (it is only rated to 100 feet however, so go deeper at your own risk) I use the flash a lot, but where I dive there is not much particulate in the water, so backscatter was not an issue, except when I was in caves and such. I highly recommend this case to anyone wanting to take underwater photos. An external strobe would improve photos a lot, and I am working on fabricating one to work with my Powershot. There is a tripod mount-style hole on the bottom of the case that facilitates attachment to a strobe assembly. I usually set the camera to automatically power down after 5 mins, this saves battery somewhat. I have been able to take up to 90 shots over the course of about 6 hours (2 dives and a long surface interval) with 80% of the shots with flash. Thats about as far as one can extend the battery's life. Get an extra battery if you plan on doing more work than that without a recharge, Overall it is an excellent product to go with an excellent camera

Bushnell Infinity 8.5x45 Waterproof/Fogproof Roof Prism Binocular

This product has excellent optics. Eye relief for eyeglass wearers is excellent. Lens caps provided with product do not stay on well and there is no way provided to retain them with the product when they are off. Single eyepiece focus adjustment is a little inconvenient to use. Case is too small to hold binoculars with neck strap on so I just close case as far as I can with the binocular strap sticking out and use that as case strap.

These glasses are wonderful. They have excellent range, are very bright and have a wide field of view. They are small and compact. The eye rubber guards twist to retract and expand making the binocular even more compact and durable. The main finger focus in the center of the glasses is knobbed to give you easy control while focusing on objects and you can lock it to your set focus. The right eye focus turns and clicks into place so your right eye focus is always set to your individual need. It is an absolutely wonderful set of glasses and very durable.

Vortex Optics 8 x 42 Fury Series Waterproof Roof Prism Binocular with 6.8 Degree Angle of View Review

Vortex Optics 8 x 42 Fury Series Waterproof Roof Prism Binocular with 6.8 Degree Angle of View
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This product is incredible. I have the 10x42 Fury's, and just can't say enough about them. I used to own a pair of Swarovski EL 10x42's until I tried a pair of Fury's that a fellow birder had, and I was absolutely blown away. I sold the Swaro's for 1600$ (poor sap!) and bought these for 280$ at [...]. They gave me a ridiculously good deal, but there were...special circumstances.
What did I do with the extra cash? Well, I bought an AR-15! So now I have a phenomenal pair of binos with a BETTER warrenty than the Swaro's AND a new AR-15. It just doesn't get any better.
Ok, ok, now for the stuff that matters: They're super, super bright, have a click-stop diopter for easy adjusting, twist-up eyecaps, have minimal edge distortion (about as much as the Swaro's), and have a close focus of about 5 feet, which beats the 6.5 I got with the Swaro's. The focus knob is nice and smooth, and it's pretty quick. Bottom line: buy these. You won't be disappointed!

The Vortex 8x42 fury binocular is strong, lightweight and designed for comfortable viewing. Unique among roof prisms, the center locking diopter of the Fury lets you make all diopter adjustments without ever taking your eye off your target. The 8x42 Fury binocular is standing by to put you in the best position to capture views with clarity, contrast and excellent detail. For all-around viewing, the steady power of the 8x42 Fury will lead you to critical details from as close as five feet and out. A comfortable eyecup can make all the difference when you're spending hours in the field and the tapered multi-position eyecups of the Fury binocular fit your eyes most naturally. Built on a solid frame, the 8x42 Fury binocular wears a tough coat of rubber armor for rough handling that is low in weight and easy to carry. Depend on the waterproof, shockproof, fogproof performance that comes with the advanced protection of argon gas purging

MADE Products CA-2001-BLK Seattle Sling Waterproof Bag (Black) Review

MADE Products CA-2001-BLK Seattle Sling Waterproof Bag (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been a photographer for over thirty years and I was in the wholesale professional photographic equipment business for about twenty. I now photograph wild birds in some of the harshest environments on earth so when I review an item like this I like to put it through the wringer. And that is just what I did.
First: I like the look and the basic design of the bag. The velcro for the top flap is really heavy duty. It is a good substitute for zippers IF you are using the orange bag inside of the case. The orange protection bag can be pulled out and the insert with the dividers can be reinserted without the water resistant bag. There is space for memory cards and filters just above where the top lid attaches to the case, but no where else. The backpack-type strap is unique and I liked it, although it took some getting used to. The interior space is surprisingly small considering the size of the bag. However, I don't believe that this was designed to be an "all-purpose" camera bag (as are most Tenbas and Lowe Pros). This was made for transporting equipment (photo or otherwise) into really wet environments. So that's what I tested it for.
I used the orange "bag" for all of the water tests. I stuffed the interior dividers with colored paper (I was not up for risking my own photo gear) that turns really dark when exposed to the slightest bit of moisture. Next, I took it outside and took out my garden hose and my trusty eight-way spray nozzle.
I started with the "mist" setting and held the nozzle just two feet from the bag and sprayed all around it for about 20 minutes. If you have ever been close to a great falls you have an idea of what I was testing for. The bag wipes off surprisingly well. The paper was completely dry. Success #1.
Second I used a setting that would simulate a pretty good rain storm. Since I have been caught in these many times with my own camera bag in the past (including in the rain forest of Peru and a down-pour in a South Florida that I thought would never end) I felt that one hour was just about the right amount of time. I noticed some water inside of the case itself but not inside of the orange bag. It was still dry inside. Success #2.
Now, I wouldn't have subjected the bag to this last test if it were not for the photo on the tag that showed the bag being submerged in water. I wanted to see how well the Camera Armor bag protected gear from an accidental fall into water. This has happened to me several times in my life and I have ended up damaging a Hassleblad, two Leicas and ruining a favorite view camera lens. Time for a dip in the pool!
I stood near the edge of the four foot deep part of a community swimming pool and imagined that I had a brand new Canon 50D (yet to be released at this time) and about $5000 in lenses in the bag. I "lost" my balance, fell into the water and immediately raised the bag out of the pool as quickly as I would have if it had been for real. Wow! No paper inside of the bag was even a little bit wet. However, if I had memory cards in the space that I think they were meant to be they would have been subjected to a drowning unless they were in their own little plastic cases. Success #3!
I took out the colored paper and stuck white paper inside it now. I took it to a dry field and almost covered it with dirt and sand. Again, the interior of the bag had dirt in it, but not the protective orange bag. Success #4. I was tired and gave up in any further torture.
This is a GREAT bag for what it is designed for and worth the cost. But I have to be honest and say that this model should not be considered a "Pro" bag. There just isn't enough room for even enough gear for a day trip. Also, it is hard to get in and out of when using the orange bag. Where I think that this bag fits in is as a way for adventurists to carry a modest amount of sensitive gear and protect it from getting wet or dirty. I could put a digital SLR with a zoom attached, a flash, a GPS and radio or two. Until it is available in a larger model I would suggest the pro gets an external cover for his/her existing case. If you think that you and your bag might get submerged carry your equipment in a Pelican case.
I give the Camera Armor 5 stars for water resistance and 3 for being a well thought-out camera bag, so 4 stars in all.

Brunton Lite-Tech 10x42 Full Size Waterproof Roof Prism Binoculars Review

Brunton Lite-Tech 10x42 Full Size Waterproof Roof Prism Binoculars
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I saw these at a reduced price at Amazon and decided to buy a pair based on the feature list, Brunton name, and the price. I wanted a cheap, but decent extra pair to keep in my truck. I was impressed a great deal by these binoculars at this price point.
Pros:
Rubberized body
Comes with rubber objective lens covers that attach with keepers to the front of the binocs
Smooth focus knob with no play
Waterproof/Fogproof
BaK-4 prism glass
Twist eyepieces for using with/without eyeglasses
Close focus is approximately 10 feet
Excellent optics and clarity. Only far edges of view showed blur and that was very little. Razer tack focus for viewing straight on.
Cons:
Chinese made? Not really a con given the excellent quality of the optics and body build.
Only a 1 year Brunton warranty. The day they arrived, we had a herd of deer walk into our office parking lot which is located near the edge of town. I work for a government natural resource management agency. I pulled out the binoculars and gave them a whirl. They were pretty amazing. I had no complaints. Several other employees tried them and remarked what nice binoculars they were and how clear of view they had. It's great that the price point on decent binoculars has been lowered since the Chinese have upgraded their optical production techniques.
I have not checked these babies in the rain or snow yet. I'll update my review later.

Olympus Magellan 8x42 EXWP I Binocular Review

Olympus Magellan 8x42 EXWP I Binocular
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These Olympus Magellan EXPWP 8x42 binoculars are the best binoculars out there in this price range. I visited several stores and tried many models in the $200-300 range, including Nikon, Pentax, etc. This 8x42 model came highly recommended and are probably a better all around choice then the 10x42 model. I also did many hours of internet research, reading reviews, comparing features, etc. Several professional reviews say that to get a pair of binoculars that are noticeably better than these, you will probably have to spend at least $500.00+ for a German made pair.
When people try my binoculars, the first thing they say is "WOW!". The image is that good - crisp and clear to the edges. I use them for sightseeing on vacations, at stadium sporting events, bird watching, etc. They are light and easy to hold and use. (Just don't forget to twist-out the eye cups first if you don't wear glasses.) While visiting my wife's family in the Caribbean, my father-in-law liked them so much that ended up giving him my pair. So now I am replacing them with Amazon (best price).
If you can afford to spend this much on binoculars, get these and don't buy the less expensive, inferior binoculars. You will notice a big difference the second you look through them and they are well worth every dollar. Do your own research if you like, and try them out. I'm sure you will agree that these are the best value, with the most features in this price range. These are an excellent pair of binoculars. Cheers!

Alpen isn't one of the big names, but they make a great product for a reasonable price. I bought a pair for elk hunting and backpacking and they worked flawlessly. The only person who ever spotted game faster than me was a nauseated guy trying to use an old pair of 20x binoculars without a tripod! He must've gotten lucky...
The image is bright, crisp and clear, and the twist-down eyecups accommodate my glasses very well. The focus knobs stay put, even after a long day on the trail. My only complaint is that the lens covers didn't always stay put, but overall it was a minor complaint. Forget those micro-mini binoculars for hunting, hiking and backpacking - these are great, and don't weight much at all!

These are my first pair of "nice" binoculars and I love them so far.
I'm using them for astronomy and their views are clear as a bell. Well worth the extra bucks. The rubber coating is thick and makes them feel sturdy and easy to hold. The focus knob, exit pupil adjustment, and tripod mount cover all turn smoothly. Focusing does take some effort because of the seals but in my experience all waterproof bino focus knobs take some work to turn.
I tried Nikon, Swarovski, Leupold, Celestron, Mead, Bushnell, and Jason. The Pentax are a great bang for your stargazing buck.

There are two things that I consider when buying a pair of binoculars: comfort and the quality of the
optics. The 8x32 Merlin's excel in both.
They are the most comfortable binoculars that I have ever used. They are light, very well balanced,
and easy to carry and use all day long. The soft angled eyecups fit me perfectly and are my preferred type
of eyecup. They may not work as well for people with eyeglasses.
The binoculars deliver a sharp clear image that is the equal of more expensive binoculars.

Alpen Apex 10 x 32 Compact Waterproof Roof Prism Binocular:
These binocs are super. I also have a much older pair of Bushell 8 x 32's that are very nice - so nice that I have not been able to find another pair that were as good - never mind better - for less than $1000.
But these little beauties are alot less than a grand and better than several models that I have tried that cost between $1000 & $1500. They are wonderful: clear, bright, easy to use and not too heavy to hold and/or carry around.
Another nice feature is that for people who wear eyeglasses, there is a bit on each eye cup that twists open allowing one to keep their eyeglasses on. I've never had any luck wearing spectacles whilst looking through the binocs - but it works beautifully with the Alpen Apex 10 x 32 and this way, there's not much adjustment required when hubby - who also wears glasses - and I pass back & forth. Saves alot of bother.
Finally, I can focus on birds just a few feet away and still bring them into crisp focus - and I mean crisp - the details are wonderful. This is well beyond the capabilities of my old 8x32's.
The Alpen Apex 10x32 Compact Waterproof Roof Prism Binoculars were my Christmas prezzy and I am delighted - my birdwathing pleasure is much enhanced.

Just received this and had planned to try it out for a small point/shoot digital under water. The bag is relabeled to show "GSI", but, it in fact is called a, "Waterproof Music Bag" made by Levod, on the box. It has a cable and headphone plug inside (permanently attached) would be a pain to use with a camera inside the bag as well. Additionally, it's clear window area is very fuzzy and not even close to being optically clear, it is distorted as well when you look through it, certainly can not be used for photo related tasks at all. The box seems to have been relabeled for description with a sticker over the original information. The box arrived with the seal broken and flap open, perhaps due to shipping, or perhaps it was sent that way from GSI. It's going back today for a refund. This appears to be a product that's re-labeled and described incorrectly to promote selling it (getting rid of a ton of stock someone got stuck with), rather then being what it really is. Certainly pass on this one if you want a small, functional waterproof case to use your digital camera. This isn't it!

First of all, I am not an optics expert or guru. I know you get what you pay for in life. But, I also know that not every hunting outing requires a $2000 pair of German Binocs. secondly, I am not a professional outdoorsman. I love to hunt and try to go every chance I get. But, I don't use binoculars 250 days a year. If I did, I would go for some premium glass. I hunt deer in Western Kentucky. So that means mostly wooded areas shots are usually less then 100 yards. Not much wide open turf for me. I bought the Alpen Ridge and I am quite pleased. the optics are good. I get very crisp images. they are light enough for the type of hunting I do. The 10X is about right for my geography. My 11 year old and 8 year old sons made great use of them during a few squirrel hunts and really liked being able to see the squirrels we were hunting. They were worth the purchase price to see the look on my boys faces as they got up close to the animals in the wild. One day, I will hand them down to one of my sons and get myself those Swarovski EL's.
My buddy comapared my Alpen ridge glass to a pair of High end Bushnell's he had. (His cost double what my Alpens cost). In his opinion the Alpens were just a bit better than his.

Angular field of view: 5.1 degrees
Objective aperture: 42mm
Twilight factor: 20.5

Eye relief: 16mm
Interpupillary distance: 58 to 72 mm
Close focus distance: 9.9 feet/3 meters

What is Twilight Factor? The factor that has the greatest impact on resolution or image detail, will be dependent upon the amount of light available during the time of observation. During daylight hours, when your eye pupil size will be only about 2 to 3mm, magnification will be the principal factor in image resolution. At night, with the eye pupil dilated to 6 to 8mm, aperture size is the controlling factor. In twilight conditions both of these factors control resolution effectiveness and the twilight factor is the term that compares binocular performance under these conditions.
The twilight factor is calculated by taking the square root of the product of the magnification and the aperture. The higher the twilight factor, the better the resolution of the binocular when observing under dim light conditions. For example, a 10 X 40 (twilight factor 20) would effectively resolve better under these conditions than a 7 X 35 (twilight factor 15.4) even though the 10 X 40 has a smaller exit pupil. Remember, however, that the twilight factor does not take into account the transmittance or quality of the optical system.

Columbia Timberline 8x42 Roof Prism Binocular Review

I've owned a number of good quality binoculars over the years, including the Columbia Back Country series, but I've never seen a pair of roof prism binoculars for under $200 that compares with the Columbia Timberline 8x42. They are bright and sharp across a high percentage of the field; the focusing is very fast and precise; the workmanship is excellent and promises to be quite durable; and the provided accessories (caps, strap and case) are first rate, especially the snap-in objective caps which should be supplied on all binoculars. The instrument attests to the quality optical manufacturing capabilities in China these days, and it deserves my highest recommendation.

These are really nice binoculars for the money. I got them for my wife for christmas so she could go hunting with me, and I actually think her's are nicer than mine for less money. They compare with glasses that cost quite a bit more in my opinion, and I have tried a few.
