They work wonderfully during low light which will be great in Africa since we are out early in the morning and late in the evening. I have used them for birding already and I cannot wait to use them in Africa.

(More customer reviews)This product has excellent optics. Eye relief for eyeglass wearers is excellent. Lens caps provided with product do not stay on well and there is no way provided to retain them with the product when they are off. Single eyepiece focus adjustment is a little inconvenient to use. Case is too small to hold binoculars with neck strap on so I just close case as far as I can with the binocular strap sticking out and use that as case strap.

(More customer reviews)This product is incredible. I have the 10x42 Fury's, and just can't say enough about them. I used to own a pair of Swarovski EL 10x42's until I tried a pair of Fury's that a fellow birder had, and I was absolutely blown away. I sold the Swaro's for 1600$ (poor sap!) and bought these for 280$ at [...]. They gave me a ridiculously good deal, but there were...special circumstances.
What did I do with the extra cash? Well, I bought an AR-15! So now I have a phenomenal pair of binos with a BETTER warrenty than the Swaro's AND a new AR-15. It just doesn't get any better.
Ok, ok, now for the stuff that matters: They're super, super bright, have a click-stop diopter for easy adjusting, twist-up eyecaps, have minimal edge distortion (about as much as the Swaro's), and have a close focus of about 5 feet, which beats the 6.5 I got with the Swaro's. The focus knob is nice and smooth, and it's pretty quick. Bottom line: buy these. You won't be disappointed!

These binocs are super. I also have a much older pair of Bushell 8 x 32's that are very nice - so nice that I have not been able to find another pair that were as good - never mind better - for less than $1000.
But these little beauties are alot less than a grand and better than several models that I have tried that cost between $1000 & $1500. They are wonderful: clear, bright, easy to use and not too heavy to hold and/or carry around.
Another nice feature is that for people who wear eyeglasses, there is a bit on each eye cup that twists open allowing one to keep their eyeglasses on. I've never had any luck wearing spectacles whilst looking through the binocs - but it works beautifully with the Alpen Apex 10 x 32 and this way, there's not much adjustment required when hubby - who also wears glasses - and I pass back & forth. Saves alot of bother.
Finally, I can focus on birds just a few feet away and still bring them into crisp focus - and I mean crisp - the details are wonderful. This is well beyond the capabilities of my old 8x32's.
The Alpen Apex 10x32 Compact Waterproof Roof Prism Binoculars were my Christmas prezzy and I am delighted - my birdwathing pleasure is much enhanced.

(More customer reviews)First of all, I am not an optics expert or guru. I know you get what you pay for in life. But, I also know that not every hunting outing requires a $2000 pair of German Binocs. secondly, I am not a professional outdoorsman. I love to hunt and try to go every chance I get. But, I don't use binoculars 250 days a year. If I did, I would go for some premium glass. I hunt deer in Western Kentucky. So that means mostly wooded areas shots are usually less then 100 yards. Not much wide open turf for me. I bought the Alpen Ridge and I am quite pleased. the optics are good. I get very crisp images. they are light enough for the type of hunting I do. The 10X is about right for my geography. My 11 year old and 8 year old sons made great use of them during a few squirrel hunts and really liked being able to see the squirrels we were hunting. They were worth the purchase price to see the look on my boys faces as they got up close to the animals in the wild. One day, I will hand them down to one of my sons and get myself those Swarovski EL's.
My buddy comapared my Alpen ridge glass to a pair of High end Bushnell's he had. (His cost double what my Alpens cost). In his opinion the Alpens were just a bit better than his.

(More customer reviews)I've owned a number of good quality binoculars over the years, including the Columbia Back Country series, but I've never seen a pair of roof prism binoculars for under $200 that compares with the Columbia Timberline 8x42. They are bright and sharp across a high percentage of the field; the focusing is very fast and precise; the workmanship is excellent and promises to be quite durable; and the provided accessories (caps, strap and case) are first rate, especially the snap-in objective caps which should be supplied on all binoculars. The instrument attests to the quality optical manufacturing capabilities in China these days, and it deserves my highest recommendation.

Kowa BD25-8GR Roof Prism Wateproof Binoculars (8X25) Review

(More customer reviews)Bought these binoculars for the quality of the lens treatments, waterproof, compact size, etc. I have used them bird watching for a few weeks now. I like the excellent light transmission for my old eyes, I like the lightweight and compact size. The view is clear and crisp to the edge of the view. The focus wheel is smooth and efficient. Eight power is the maximum I'd like to use in small binoculars but it works fine in this binocular.
Two things I don't care for. One is the right eye adjustment is quite stiff and, being small'ish, hard to adjust finely. On the other hand it doesn't move out of alignment once you manage to get it set.
The other is becoming endemic in binoculars, the twist out eyecups. I find I don't care for them. This is my first pair with them and likely my last. It is a point of weakness in handling the binoculars in my opinion. You have to remember each time you get them out hurriedly to see that rara avis flitting by. They must be twisted out all the way for proper use. They look and feel mighty fragile. Time will tell but I think I'll look only at "fixed" eyepiece binoculars for my upcoming boat binoculars.

Compared to the world's absolute best roof prism glasses it is at least 40% cheaper, has practically 98% of their sharpness in the centre of the viewing field (FOV), is among the best for uniform sharpness across the entire FOV which, however, is narrower than the FOV in the others; it also has 97% of their brightness and contrast(percentage figures are purely indicative). The picture appears a little flat like an LCD screen but horizontals and verticals remain undistorted unlike in most binoculars. When panning the binoculars the image is like a rolling globe which becomes flat as soon as panning is stopped. This is a design feature, a side effect of the remarkable lack of distortion,and one that reduces in intensity with use. In high contrast lighting, purple and yellow chromatic aberration (CA) can be seen on the sharp edges of dark linear objects such as branches against an overcast sky, usually towards the edge of the FOV. CA detracts from sharpness but many users are insensitive to CA and changing the angle of ones eyes very slightly on the eyepiece may remove the CA. Eyeglass wearers will find it among the most comfortable of binoculars. The focussing wheel is the smoothest and fastest of any binocular, taking the shortest of turns to go from zero to infinity. The locking collar for diopter adjustment of the right eyepiece is an excellent design which does not go out of alignment. Build quality is not exceeded by any binocular. Only the porro type binoculars may impart a more stereoscopic quality to the view. There are very few porros produced any more and among the best are those by Nikon. The 10x42 Premier is strongly recommended, especially for those who demand the best at a non-stratospheric price. Especially good for spectacle wearers.

Pentax DCF SP 8x32 Binocular Review

(More customer reviews)My Pentax DCF SP 8x32 binoculars were purchased 3 years ago for squeezing in birding while on business trips. Over time, I began to carry them in favor of my other binoculars due to their great optics, close focus (for butterflies) and refined focus. These binoculars have not been coddled, having endured punishing hikes in extremes of weather. In comparison to Zeiss Victory FL 8x42 bins, the Pentax came a tad short in brightness, but otherwise, I can detect little difference, except the extra $2000 list price. One reviewer complained of chromatic aberration in some light settings. Since I have never experienced that condition with my Pentax bins, even when trying to force the problem, I believe his may be slightly out of alignment.
If there's any criticism of the DCF SPs, it would be a middling depth of field. This shortcoming is mitigated by the SPs smooth focusing and not special to these binoculars. My 20 year old Nikon
8X porros set a bar in this area that no 8X roof has approached.
Great durability, excellent optics, light weight and compact, the Pentax SPs provide a combination hard, to beat at a reasonable cost. You may be able to buy a better in this price range, but you're more likely to purchase an lesser binocular.

NIKON - 8X42 MONARCH ATB (NKN7430) Review

(More customer reviews)These are very nice binoculars, extremely sharp and bright for the money. My decision was helped by the recommendation of a Cornell University study that identified the 8X42 Binoculars as a "best in class" for this price range. While I had previously had 10X binoculars, the Monarch 10X42 got less than stellar reviews. Also, my previous binoculars (Nikon Travelite) twice had to be repaired, once for getting water in them and second when the prism got out of alignment, I was tired of the false economy of buying things that do not last. The Monarchs are waterproof, warrantied for 25 years, and the optical quality is great. I wear eyeglasses, and they amazed me how (for the first time) I can use my binoculars with my glasses on with complete ease. Very nice product - highly recommended.

Nikon 7525 Team Realtree Monarch 10x42mm All-Terrain Binoculars Review

(More customer reviews)I've had these Monarch 10x42 in Realtree camo for 3-4 months now and have used them frequently over that time period in a variety of conditions.
This is an excellent all around pair of binoculars. They provide an extremely clear, bright view. On a clear/sunny day, the difference between these and a cheaper pair of binos isn't that apparent (although it is noticable), but as lighting conditions fade the benefits of a high quality pair of binos really shine through (cheaper binoculars don't let as much light through).
I think 10x42 is a pretty good choice for a general purpose pair of binoculars. It's plenty of zoom for most outdoor uses while providing a good field of view.
The Realtree finish on these binoculars looks excellent. They look great, and IMO it's worth going with the realtree vs. the black.
The Monarchs feel like a well put together, durable bino. While I've only had them for a few months, I've used them quite a bit with no signs of durability issues. The form factor is also idea - small and light enough to throw in a bag without thinking about it.
In summary, for the sub ~$300 range I think the Nikon Monarchs are the clear choice, for optical quality, durability, convenient size/weight. I highly doubt you will find a better pair of binoculars for anything close to the price of the Monarchs.

(More customer reviews)Bought these for my parents, so that I could have their Monarch 10X42's for hiking and camping trips. They generally use them close to home and on short walks. Highly recommended for that purpose. Too heavy to comfortably take hiking. Clarity low light precision are exceptional for the price. I am sure I could spend a lot more money for Zeiss, or something, but, these are top of their category. Would be good for hunting trips, too. Highly recommended.

(More customer reviews)These binoculars are mostly just like the old Nikon Monarchs, with maybe just a little more light in low light conditions. An excellent pair of binoculars for the price, five years ago binoculars of this quality would have been more like $500-600. An especially cool feature of all the Nikon Monarchs is the close focus distance, which with my eyes is probably even a little under four feet. If you like looking at butterflies and dragonflies as well as birds, these binoculars are an excellent choice for their price tag.
