A solid work horse for great distance. Not too heavy, comfortable and easy to focus. One draw back is unless you are three to four hundred yards away, stay with the smaller 8X30 Predator. The 12X50 is almost too powerfull causing excessive movement. It also brings your subject matter too close. I have found myself having to move back to get better clearity.

Purpose of using Bin's: Birding
I bought these binoculars after researching/testing out many different models. I might have bought Monarch X's 10.5x45, Vortex Viper 10x42, or these bin's by Eagle Optics. After trying them all out, these seemed to be the best bang for the buck. As the others are quite expensive and the Rangers rival with, compete with, and/or are on the same level of quality as the Vipers and the Monarchs. I also took in consideration the better lifetime warranty and warranty service provided by Eagle Optics compared to the Nikon's 1 year warranty. Further note that as I am a college student, I naturally gravitated towards the cheaper pair. (I definitely think the Viper's are most likely worth the extra money, though.)
My first "fair" pair of binoculars were Nikon Action's 10-22zoom x 50. I compared the Nikon Action to the Ranger. I was looking a California Gull across the river my first day of testing the bins. Even zooming with the Nikon Actions, I was able to better identify the gull with the Rangers. (Of course, zooming causes light intake to diminish.)
I know the comparison is not a very efficacious illustration of the Ranger's quality. Nevertheless, considering the price and the power of the binoculars, they are worth every dollar.
I have read a review of the 10x42's recommending the binoculars after a week or so of research [...]. So here is the second review reiterating the point, that even after copious amounts research and testing these binocular's or the 10x42's are assured to deliver the best bang for the buck.
Peace,
Kevin

Not top-of-the-line, but in the birding world top-of-the-line starts at around $1,500 U.S. However, if you are looking for well constructed glasses that you can take anywhere into the field I would get these.
Great especially for beginning birders and wildlife observers on a tight budget. I also have a pair of Leupold WindRiver Pinnacles, and another pair of Leupold Olympics and although they cost more, especially the Pinnacles, they are not quite as sharp as the Ranger SRTs. Construction-wise the SRT is made like a tank, and you won't worry about dings and dust.
I actually bought a pair of SRT's for my son to use in his college field work, and regrettably did a simple focus and sharpness comparison (the business card taped to a distant wall test) to my Leupold's. Fortunately, I got the Leupold's at an aggressive sale price so it didn't hurt as much, but if you paid list, you could spend twice as much and not get as good as the SRT.

For several years I owned a pair of Bushnell binoculars that I just didn't get along with. Nothing I did improved focus (yes, I followed the directions) and for some odd reason I seemed to suffer from double vision when looking through them (again, configuration was correct). So I finally gave up and invested in these Olympus Trooper 10x50 binoculars. All it took was a couple of seconds to make them perfect for me. The optics are clear and bright, focus is a piece of cake to obtain, the magnification and range are great and they fit very comfortably and securely in my hand. The carrying case is padded and well made. My one criticism (maybe) would be the strap, which although strong is thin and not so comfortable to sling over the neck or shoulder for longer periods of time. But I don't think the quality of these binoculars can be beat for their very reasonable price.

I have had the tripod head over a year and really liked it.
I used it with my digital camera.
Now that I have started using longer lenses with it have noticed that it is no longer rock steady when I release the grip. Especially a problem when I have it tilted when taking vertical shots with long lenses. I have tried tightening everything I could tighten with no apparent effect.
If you want a great tripod head for use with a light camera this is the one to get. For people taking verticals or using longer lenses it just will not support the weight.

These binoculars are just beautiful! I'm an amateur birder, but have been a professional photographer for many years, so I know something about optics and since many of the lenses I used on my Hasselblads and Sinars were, by choice, Zeiss, I totally respect the quality of that company. In fact, I've always been someone who appreciated and spent the extra money for the best of whatever it was I was looking to buy. So I have owned Porsches and Leicas, Mieles (vacuum cleaners :-) and McIntosh Stereo systems to name just a few. I'm a high end junky! So when I went looking to buy my first pair of serious binoculars I was looking at Zeiss, Leica and Swarovsky right off the bat. Of course they are all beautiful pieces of excellent equipment with the most sophisticated build, construction, design, materials and engineering. And looking for a 10x42 (or equivalent)I found much to be appreciated, certainly. But then a very good friend of mine, someone who I greatly respect and who is a serious birder for over 30 years, told me that he has always favored the Bausch and Lomb (now Bushnell) Elites and recommended I give them serious consideration. Now, he paid about $1000 for his pair a few years ago. Since then, Bushnell has taken over their development and has made some improvements every year. A few years ago they created the e2 line of Elites which was good enough to be called an Elite but still a small compromise in some of their techs. It was created to sell at a lower price point which was about $600-$700 and was an addition, not a replacement, to the Elite line. Just this year, they raised the e2 to full sail specs with no compromises at all, and left the MSRP where it was. They are selling on line for $350-$500 in discounted sites. I believe that the new e2 is the present Elite. Period.
After examining a pair I was extremely impressed with the quality of the construction, the ergonomics, and, most important, the brightness, sharpness, clarity, ease of focusing, generous eye relief (I wear glasses), extraordinary color accuracy (actually better than the Zeiss IMHO) and 3 dimensionality. Comparing them to Zeiss I found there to be a very close balance in the attributes of the two glasses; except for one feature. The Zeiss cost over $2200 and these Elites could be obtained for less than $400! Hello? How much of a big name junky am I? The Zeiss were larger than the Elites, came with a skimpy strap unlike the generous comfortable one which Bushnell provides, and has a focus wheel which, while smooth, is not as easy to turn as the Elite's.Also, the Zeiss eye-cups had click stops (and felt a little chunky when moving them), while the Elites just rotated smoothly to where you wanted them and would lock in max position if desired to be there Were the Zeiss Victory's "sharper?" Hard to tell. The Zeiss Victory was really nice, but not any startling difference in sharpness, or brightness from the Elites (maybe just a little . .I was trying hard to see it). I really had to keep changing the two back and forth to see if I could notice a difference . . .any, and certainly one which justified the cost disparity. This was the test. And the Elites are so good that I actually made a rational decision and bought them, I saved over $1700 which I could use to take a trip with my new binoculars if I so chose. And I haven't had any remorse or sense of loss. Every time I grab them and put them to my eyes, I become more addicted to them. They are like a part of you once you start using them.
I could talk about all the specific binocular tech points in detail and give my take on them vs. the other brands mentioned, but that wouldn't add much. Suffice it to say, these Elites are as good as it gets, every bit the player in the top brand parade if all you want is a great pair of binoculars which will not be a compromise in any meaningful way, which will delight you and work for you flawlessly, and will not cause a ruckus at home with your mate once the monthly account is put on the table. Enjoy!

This product has excellent optics. Eye relief for eyeglass wearers is excellent. Lens caps provided with product do not stay on well and there is no way provided to retain them with the product when they are off. Single eyepiece focus adjustment is a little inconvenient to use. Case is too small to hold binoculars with neck strap on so I just close case as far as I can with the binocular strap sticking out and use that as case strap.

Orion Scenix - Binoculars 10 x 50 - wide angle - porro Review

Orion Scenix - Binoculars 10 x 50 - wide angle - porro

I bought these binoculars directly from Orion about 8 months ago. Over the years, I have owned several pairs of 7X50 and 10X50 binoculars from different manufacturers such as Tasco, Jason Empire, etc. They all had one thing in common -- BK7 prisims. They produced fair images, but usually had some flaring around objects and very little resolution.
Not so with these Scenix binocs. They have BK4 prisims, as evidenced by holding the binocs at arms length and looking through the eyepieces. Rather than the diamond you see with the BK7 prisims, there is a nice round apperature with these glasses. I looked at Venus just last night and could make out the crescent shape. Jupiter's moons can also be seen and star clusters like the Double Cluster in Perseus show up sharp and crisp.
For nights when you just don't feel like setting up the scope, these make for a nice, convenient alternative. Very nice for the price.

Moreover, every air-to-glass surface is antireflection coated. The objective lenses are multi-coated for maximum light transmission. I received these binoculars for my birthday. I wanted something more powerful than my 8x25's for bird watching. These optics are fantastic! They are so clear and powerful and the specs have them weighing less than their 8x42 counterparts. I wear glasses and they are comfortable to use with my glasses on. Without having to take my glasses on an off to use them, I can follow the birds and sight them much faster than with my old pair. Did I mention that the optics were fantastic? The crisp and clear image allows me to see the detail of each bird very clearly. I imagine they will be great for other hobbies as well. They come with a neck/shoulder strap and a case that can be used on one's belt.

Carl Zeiss Conquest Binocular (8x30) Review

Carl Zeiss Conquest Binocular (8x30)

(More customer reviews)
I am a demanding user of binoculars. I want both optical perfection and the ruggedness to survive accidents sustained in the field, but without spending a fortune. I owned several decent binoculars, but they all fell victim to being dropped and knocked out of alignment. Even after being serviced, I would get headaches after looking through them for any length of time. Then I decided to get the Fujinon "Air drop" binoculars. I never broke them, but the optical performance was terrible. They are a porro prism design, but the spherical aberration and distorted focus in them was worse than many cheap roof prism binocs! I looked through the Steiner Safari 8X30's, and while the optics were flat and sharp across the field, they were not multicoated and had internal reflections that degraded contrast.
I did some research, and then bought the Zeiss Conquest 8X30's sight unseen from an Internet retailer based on the brand reputation and reviews I had read. I have owned them for over 6 months, and I am very pleased with them. They have been accidentally knocked off the kitchen table more than once without any effect on the optics. The view is very sharp, flat and contrasty. When you look close to the outer edges of the field of view it gets a little soft, but it is not very noticeable and is still excellent performance for a roof prism binocular in this price range. They are compact enough that I can comfortably take them with me anywhere, and are easy to hold without getting tired. Even though the objectives are only 30mm, the low light performance is good and I have enjoyed casual stargazing with them. They have been well worth the money for me.

I asked a salesman at the biggest camera store in NY if I should by Leica or Swarovski in 10x25 binoculars. I was surprised when he said neither and pointed me towards the Zeiss. I had bought larger binoculars from him before and I trusted his opinion. Sure enough, he was right. The Zeiss were at least as good as the other two brands and over $200.00 cheaper. I have had them for a few months now and they are great. Eye relief is perfect with or without glasses. Brightness is excellent and they are tack sharp. I have no complaints about the glasses at all. The were also just a top pick by consumer reports. The are light, compact and easy to use. I carry them a lot more than my Trinovids which are larger and heavier.
PS The Amazon picture is wrong. Search for the Zeiss 8x20's to see what the glasses really look like.
PPS To Amazon's credit they fixed the picture.

If you want a taste of the very-high-grade binocular experience and a smaller-than-7x35 convenience for packing, these are great. The image is super sharp, bright, true, and very "3D": beautiful. Slightly truer color and sharper than the Nikon Action 7x35 (which is wonderful). The eye-relief is huge...absolutely no problem with glasses. That brings me to the main problem I noticed: that they are very sensitive to your eye location. You get black tunneling when you are a tiny but off-axis, even with the spread set right. That issue improves a lot with glasses on or contacts in...these are best used with the eyes corrected one way or the other. Since this is promoted for kids as well, make sure correction is on. That issue aside, these have a really sweet view. The somewhat narrow depth of field closeby is actually fantastic for picking out birds and animals in the woods or the yard.

Full-size binoculars can be too large for many people, especially younger users. Enter the Leupold Green Ring Yosemite binoculars, which not only fit smaller hands, but also adjust to fit the smaller interpupillary distance--the distance between the eyes--of smaller users, something most full-size optics simply can't do. As a result, everyone from youthful users to experienced adults can enjoy the optical performance that serious bird watchers and sightseers demand. This particular Yosemite binocular features a magnification of 6x, 30mm objective lenses, and a natural-colored finish, with full multicoatings to ensure maximum brightness, clarity, contrast, and color fidelity. The binocular also offers a wide field of view (420 feet @ 1,000 yards), making it easy to track faraway objects. And users will love the generous 20mm of eye relief, a perfect distance for comfortable extended viewing. Armor coated, rugged, and waterproof, the Yosemite binocular carries Leupold's limited lifetime warranty.

About Leupold From humble immigrant beginnings, Leupold grew--based on a promise of quality--to become a classic American company. In 1907, Fred Leupold set up a one-man shop at 5th and Oak streets in Portland to repair surveying equipment. He was joined by his brother-in-law, Adam Voelpel, and later by inventor John Cyprian Stevens, and the foundations for a century of success were in place.
During Leupold’s second half-century, the company focused heavily on the sports optics business. Leupold’s presence in the hunting and shooting market expanded with innovative optics and features that are now legendary among hunters, shooters, and outdoors enthusiasts. Many of the industry’s standards--nitrogen waterproofing, the Duplex reticle, and more--were Leupold creations.

I returned my first one to Adorama because when I looked down at the eyepieces in sunlight I saw the secondary reflections of the sun were different colors between the eyepieces. One or more of the glass surfaces was improperly coated, something that should have been caught by Quality Control before the binocular left the factory. Kudos to Adorama for handling the exchange in a timely manner, with no additional cost to me.
I gave this second pair a thorough visual inspection and it appears perfect. The optical quality of this bino is almost beyond reproach, there is just a minute amount of chromatic aberration in some lighting conditions, and slightly undersized prisms. The aspheric lens elements excel, keeping the images 'TACK SHARP' until the edge of view, BETTER than my other binos, including my highly touted Nikon Monarch 8X42 ATB! The field of view is a bit narrow, but the fact that that entire field stays sharp helps to offset that. I often wear eyeglasses when using binoculars, and the 20mm eye relief is fantastic (paltry eye relief kept from buying an expensive, high end Fujinon; I purchased this Pentax instead!). The 12X magnification allows these to be hand-held, but some shakiness will be evident. I usually mount them on a tripod, or hand-hold them as I lay back in a lawn chair, minimizing shake.
Build quality looks and feels excellent, and I like the sculpted shape. I think the rubber covering would offer more protection against bumps if it was a little softer. The focus wheel is stiff, and it is slow focusing, taking a long time to travel through the focus range. The slow focus is an advantage for astronomy (my main use), it allows for very precise focusing. Birders and hunters will find the slow focus a hinderance. When focused for my eyes on deep-sky objects (infinity), the focus wheel is between the lock notches and focus will not lock. I think this "focus lock" and the "click-stop" diopter eyelens adjustment are unneeded marketing gimmicks, with no 'value-added' other than to one-up the competition. The large screw out eyecups are a big improvement over fold-down rubber eyecups. The low prism housings feel different but not uncomfortable. Put your hands in front of you like you are holding binos, now start turning your hands so the thumbs move toward each other, until they touch. That's what it's like to hold these. This bino is a little large and a little heavy, compared to many other 50mm porro prism binos.
Accessories is where manufacturers cut costs, and Pentax is no different. Standard plastic objective lens covers are supplied. The neckstrap is unpadded and too narrow for the weight, my neck gets sore after several minutes. I will replace it with Op/Tech's E-Z Comfort strap. The eyelens 'rain cover' is next to useless. It is held in place by gravity, even with the bino hinge fully opened the eyecups do not grip the cover. I soaked my rain cover in hot water to soften it, then lightly pressed the edges closer together; it now grips the eyecups and stays in place. The case is my biggest complaint! It is a storage case only, not a carry case! It has no belt loop, shoulder strap, strap attachment rings, or handle. The only good thing I can say about it is it is large enough to hold the bino AND the strap! (Something I can't say about my Monarch's case, but it does have a belt loop!) I am considering Mountain Smith's Focus II (Lg) case, or one of Buckstitch Canvas's larger bino cases. Gone are the good ol' days when you would get a nice leather hard case that would last a lifetime supplied with a binocular.
Based on my initial impressions, I can recommend this binocular, IF IT FILLS YOUR NEEDS. Just check it over good, and be prepared to return it if not satisfied. Whenever (if ever) Chinese quality control gets up to speed, their optics will rival anything put out by the best Japanese or German companies.
ADDED: I completed several nights of informal astronomical testing of this bino. I won't go into detail on the testing, it is the same as in my review of the Nikon Monarch. If a bino gives good images of bright and dim night sky objects, it will do even better in daylight! This one is EXCELLENT+(PLUS), among the best I have EVER looked through! (I have used dozens of binos in my 40 plus years as an amateur astronomer.) The chromatic aberration is nearly non-existant when viewing the bright moon on axis (a tough test for any optic), the CA becomes more noticeable as the view is moved toward the edge. I will not hold this minimal amount of CA against it, after all, this is not a six hundred dollar instrument! But the bino does have prisms that are slightly too small for full light transmission; I see it when holding the eyelenses 8 or 10 inches in front of my eyes. Both images should be round, but there are flat edges here and there that are the edges of the prisms, where some of the light is being lost (this is one difference between these bargain binos and those that cost hundreds more). Still, I must say: THIS ONE IS A KEEPER! The image quality overrides any optical discrepencies. I give this binocular 5 stars as a surveillance or astronomy binocular; but perhaps 3 stars if focus speed, size, and weight are major considerations.
ADDED: I did purchase the Mountain Smith Focus II (Lg) case, it is almost the perfect carry case for this bino.

These glasses are wonderful. They have excellent range, are very bright and have a wide field of view. They are small and compact. The eye rubber guards twist to retract and expand making the binocular even more compact and durable. The main finger focus in the center of the glasses is knobbed to give you easy control while focusing on objects and you can lock it to your set focus. The right eye focus turns and clicks into place so your right eye focus is always set to your individual need. It is an absolutely wonderful set of glasses and very durable.

Swarovski SLC Binocular 8x30 Review

Swarovski SLC Binocular 8x30
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Swarovski 8x30 SLC is pure Austrian simplicity. Its lines are clean and simple and as far away from its cousin, the fancy EL, as possible. But optically they are incredibly close to the ELs. I've tested both. The ELs focusing is much smoother and the EL's handling is second to none - the best of any binocular from any maker. The SLC's focusing knob, in contrast, is not very smooth and is too small for use with gloves especially if you have thick or big hands, making it a three-season binocular (though here in Southern California, its no big deal). What the SLC lacks in mechanical finesse, however, it more than makes up for in sheer optical brilliance. Frankly, I think this is one of the most underrated pieces of glass on the market. The whole SLC line has been totally upstaged by the ELs and the SLC's understated looks make them seem homely to many. I call it Spartan, and I like it. Still, they are really little optical gems. They are relatively compact and small - 30mm as opposed to 32mm - not heavy but very, very solid and beautifully built. The Austrians clearly intended to pour all their efforts into the optics. These are great birding glasses. It's easy to go hours of bird watching without eye strain. Eye relief is decent, making them fine with glasses. FOV is excellent at over 400. And though its close focus is listed at 13ft (not very good) I gauge mine at 11, which is adequate. If your dollar ceiling is a Grand and you are considering glasses under 42mm, you should give these a try. I love them.

With their reliable, high-quality optical system and rugged construction, Swarovski's Slim Light Compact (SLC) 30 binoculars are among the world's most popular high-end optics. The SLC 8x30 model--which boasts an 8x magnification and a 30mm objective lens--offers excellent image quality and maximum operating comfort, making it perfect for users who demand viewing precision throughout the day and well into dusk. Each binocular in the SLC series sports either a high-quality Swarobright coating, which produces maximum color fidelity across the entire light spectrum, or Swarotop and Swarodur coatings, which are built to create bright, high-contrast images. As a result, you can view crisp images of your favorite finches and hawks even in low-light conditions. The binoculars also feature a nonstick Swaroclean coating on the outer surface of each lens. The coating--which helps extend the lifespan of your lens--is particularly effective when you need to remove dried-on mineral residues (such as water marks from condensation), insect repellents, and tree resin.
To promote secure and comfortable handling while you view birds or wildlife, the SLC 30 includes thumb rests on the underside and depressions on the topside of the easy-to-grip rubber armoring. And users will love the SLC 30's lightweight, compact body, which is ideal for nature observation, sporting events, or arts performances. Extremely popular as entry-level binoculars, the SLC 30--which sports a sturdy metal housing that's submersible in up to 13 feet of water--is nitrogen-purged to prevent internal fogging. All Swarovski binoculars carry a lifetime warranty.

About Swarovski Optik Although founded in 1949, Swarovski Optik's roots actually trace all the way back to 1895, when Austrian Daniel Swarovski--who invented the world's first electric grinding machine for jewelry stones--established the family-owned Swarovski Crystal in the province of Tyrol. Since then, the name Swarovski has become synonymous worldwide with the clearest crystal, precision grinding, and a brilliant spirit of innovation, as the original enterprise continued branching out into additional lines of business.
Swarovski Optik owes its rise to Wilhelm Swarovski, son of the original founder and an avid hobby astronomer, who decided to build his own improved binocular in 1935 at a mere 17 years of age. With access to the specialized glass production and finishing technologies already used to manufacture jewelry stones in his father's factory, Wilhelm managed to develop a novel prism fabrication and grinding process that he applied in constructing his first 6x30 binocular. Wilhelm went on to found Swarovski Optik KG in Absam, Tyrol, in 1949, thus laying the foundation for a sports optics company with a global reputation. His company's first serial product, the Habicht 7x42, is still an industry standard in the field of hunting optics and continues to be produced in the best tradition of its founder.
