Swarovski SLC Binocular 8x30 Review

Swarovski SLC Binocular 8x30
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Swarovski 8x30 SLC is pure Austrian simplicity. Its lines are clean and simple and as far away from its cousin, the fancy EL, as possible. But optically they are incredibly close to the ELs. I've tested both. The ELs focusing is much smoother and the EL's handling is second to none - the best of any binocular from any maker. The SLC's focusing knob, in contrast, is not very smooth and is too small for use with gloves especially if you have thick or big hands, making it a three-season binocular (though here in Southern California, its no big deal). What the SLC lacks in mechanical finesse, however, it more than makes up for in sheer optical brilliance. Frankly, I think this is one of the most underrated pieces of glass on the market. The whole SLC line has been totally upstaged by the ELs and the SLC's understated looks make them seem homely to many. I call it Spartan, and I like it. Still, they are really little optical gems. They are relatively compact and small - 30mm as opposed to 32mm - not heavy but very, very solid and beautifully built. The Austrians clearly intended to pour all their efforts into the optics. These are great birding glasses. It's easy to go hours of bird watching without eye strain. Eye relief is decent, making them fine with glasses. FOV is excellent at over 400. And though its close focus is listed at 13ft (not very good) I gauge mine at 11, which is adequate. If your dollar ceiling is a Grand and you are considering glasses under 42mm, you should give these a try. I love them.

With their reliable, high-quality optical system and rugged construction, Swarovski's Slim Light Compact (SLC) 30 binoculars are among the world's most popular high-end optics. The SLC 8x30 model--which boasts an 8x magnification and a 30mm objective lens--offers excellent image quality and maximum operating comfort, making it perfect for users who demand viewing precision throughout the day and well into dusk. Each binocular in the SLC series sports either a high-quality Swarobright coating, which produces maximum color fidelity across the entire light spectrum, or Swarotop and Swarodur coatings, which are built to create bright, high-contrast images. As a result, you can view crisp images of your favorite finches and hawks even in low-light conditions. The binoculars also feature a nonstick Swaroclean coating on the outer surface of each lens. The coating--which helps extend the lifespan of your lens--is particularly effective when you need to remove dried-on mineral residues (such as water marks from condensation), insect repellents, and tree resin.
To promote secure and comfortable handling while you view birds or wildlife, the SLC 30 includes thumb rests on the underside and depressions on the topside of the easy-to-grip rubber armoring. And users will love the SLC 30's lightweight, compact body, which is ideal for nature observation, sporting events, or arts performances. Extremely popular as entry-level binoculars, the SLC 30--which sports a sturdy metal housing that's submersible in up to 13 feet of water--is nitrogen-purged to prevent internal fogging. All Swarovski binoculars carry a lifetime warranty.

About Swarovski Optik Although founded in 1949, Swarovski Optik's roots actually trace all the way back to 1895, when Austrian Daniel Swarovski--who invented the world's first electric grinding machine for jewelry stones--established the family-owned Swarovski Crystal in the province of Tyrol. Since then, the name Swarovski has become synonymous worldwide with the clearest crystal, precision grinding, and a brilliant spirit of innovation, as the original enterprise continued branching out into additional lines of business.
Swarovski Optik owes its rise to Wilhelm Swarovski, son of the original founder and an avid hobby astronomer, who decided to build his own improved binocular in 1935 at a mere 17 years of age. With access to the specialized glass production and finishing technologies already used to manufacture jewelry stones in his father's factory, Wilhelm managed to develop a novel prism fabrication and grinding process that he applied in constructing his first 6x30 binocular. Wilhelm went on to found Swarovski Optik KG in Absam, Tyrol, in 1949, thus laying the foundation for a sports optics company with a global reputation. His company's first serial product, the Habicht 7x42, is still an industry standard in the field of hunting optics and continues to be produced in the best tradition of its founder.

Alpen isn't one of the big names, but they make a great product for a reasonable price. I bought a pair for elk hunting and backpacking and they worked flawlessly. The only person who ever spotted game faster than me was a nauseated guy trying to use an old pair of 20x binoculars without a tripod! He must've gotten lucky...
The image is bright, crisp and clear, and the twist-down eyecups accommodate my glasses very well. The focus knobs stay put, even after a long day on the trail. My only complaint is that the lens covers didn't always stay put, but overall it was a minor complaint. Forget those micro-mini binoculars for hunting, hiking and backpacking - these are great, and don't weight much at all!

Bushnell 2.5x42 Night Vision Monocular Review

Bushnell 2.5x42 Night Vision Monocular
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I live in a rural area on a horse ranch, bordering a few hundred acres of open space. I wanted an inexpensive device that would let me wildlife-watch without disturbing the scene, along with the slightly more practical coyote/stray dog check before I let my small dogs out in the evening. The Good:
* For the money, this is an excellent device. Image quality is great for a Gen-1 unit, and construction quality is better than expected for the price point. The rubberized, water resistant covering & included carry case are nice touches.
* The built-in IR illuminator is tightly focused, and throws its light well. Out to 50' it provides enough light to be useful on the darkest nights, and eyeshine & reflective surfaces will pop out at significantly further distances.
* An unexpected bonus was how fun these are for stargazing! The slight magnification combined with light amplification really pulls the stars and planets out of the background. It's good enough to clearly see the fuzziness of the Orion Nebula as compared to the sharpness of a single star, for example. The Bad:
* The brightness of the power and IR illuminator LEDs. They're really, really, bright. They're located the back of the device, just to the right of the eyepiece. A green power LED and a red 'your IR beam is on' LED.
They will consistently flash & shine in your eyes as you use the device. In my case, a simple strip of black electrical tape solved the problem, (there's enough light leakage that I can tell if the light is on or not) but it's a ding against the design that I have to even do so in the first place.
* The IR source presents a visible red light. It doesn't look like too much off-angle, but pointing directly at you, it becomes obvious. I could easily see my friend pointing the monocular at me from 50' away. It is possible to disturb wildlife with it. Again, this is easily fixed by adding a cheap IR filter, but I shouldn't have to do so.The Ugly:
* The manual is relatively thick, printed on good-quality paper, and completely & utterly useless. It tells you how to add the batteries in several languages, and that's it. Not one mention of how to properly use the thing!
---------------------------
Obviously, there are better systems available, but they are priced accordingly. And for what you pay for these, you get a large percentage of the expensive systems' performance. (Gen-1 optics, by their nature, suffer from pincushion and barrel distortion issues, and the light amplification provided is less than people expect off the bat; on a moonless night, Gen-1 would still be dark without an additional light source.)
Conclusion: A solid four stars. For hobby/home users like myself, who just wanted something to play & explore with, they're great fun without breaking the bank. More serious users will want to look elsewhere, but they already know that.
---------------------------
A few hints to get the best use out of these:
* Look at a bright star in the middle of the field of view. Focus using the front ring until it is as sharp as possible. Then, while still looking at the star, rotate the eyepiece ring until the distortion is corrected. This will get you your best possible image for your eyes. Further focusing should be done with the front element only.
* The image is only sharp within the inner 40% of the field of view, with increasing distortion the further away from the center you look. The eyes' position relative to the eyepiece makes a big difference, and you may need a little practice to get the best look.
* Don't be alarmed when, after you turn off the device, it still appears to be on. The image intensifier tube takes a while to bleed down all its charge, so you can actually continue to use the device for about a minute or so after you've turned it off. This isn't a bug, it's just how these things work, so don't think yours is broken!

I bought a pair of Redfields new "Rebel" 10X42 Roof Prism Binoculars and they are excellent. They are armor coated and have a large, easy to adjust center focus wheel. The optics are fully coated and very bright and clear. The twist up eyepieces are convient for glasses wearers. The right eyepiece is adjustable and has a knuled ring for ease of adjustments. The binoculars will focus down to just a tad under 4 feet. The only thing that bothered me was the "made in China" on the box. However, the binoculars have Redfields "Limited Lifetime Warranty" and after speaking with Redfield, was told that if anything happens to the binoculars, just return them and they will be repaired or replaced free..
I would definitely buy another pair of these binoculars..

Purchased one of thes not too long ago and have come to absolutely love it. It is light, easy to carry and fits perfectly in your hand. The buttons are located in a position that makes them easy to use. Almost from the first use, I could tell the buttons apart and did not have to look to make sure which I was pushing. Operation of the unit is very intuitive. I only read the instructions once and could easily understand how to use it, and how to change modes while I am using it.
It measures distances rapidly and unless I am measuring at a really steep angle to the item it has never had difficulty returning a measurement during my learning process.
This rangefinder is easy to carry and very accurate. It was money well spent!!!!

Pentax DCF SP 8x32 Binocular Review

Pentax DCF SP 8x32 Binocular
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My Pentax DCF SP 8x32 binoculars were purchased 3 years ago for squeezing in birding while on business trips. Over time, I began to carry them in favor of my other binoculars due to their great optics, close focus (for butterflies) and refined focus. These binoculars have not been coddled, having endured punishing hikes in extremes of weather. In comparison to Zeiss Victory FL 8x42 bins, the Pentax came a tad short in brightness, but otherwise, I can detect little difference, except the extra $2000 list price. One reviewer complained of chromatic aberration in some light settings. Since I have never experienced that condition with my Pentax bins, even when trying to force the problem, I believe his may be slightly out of alignment.
If there's any criticism of the DCF SPs, it would be a middling depth of field. This shortcoming is mitigated by the SPs smooth focusing and not special to these binoculars. My 20 year old Nikon
8X porros set a bar in this area that no 8X roof has approached.
Great durability, excellent optics, light weight and compact, the Pentax SPs provide a combination hard, to beat at a reasonable cost. You may be able to buy a better in this price range, but you're more likely to purchase an lesser binocular.

I will skip the technical mumbo jumbo and focus on the experience of using these binoculars.
When I first picked these up, I was surprised and pleased at how light and comfortable they were in my hands. My pleasure remained and my surprise quickly turned to amazement when I brought them to my glasses (Yes, I wear glasses and no, I did not take them off to try them out. I use them with my glasses on - very nice!). WOW! Beautiful color and pristine field of view - from the left of the lenses to the right the of the lenses. I did not know such a wonderful image could be seen through binoculars. Images seen are crystal clear and higher detail than what can be seen with the naked eye (or in my world - through glasses). This is true from the closest focused items to the furthest focused object. (I looked at weeds ~15' away and on the weeds I could see grains of dirt not seen with the unaided eye. Also the weeds were more distinguished than with the unaided eye. I turned to look at some nearby mountains and I clearly saw eagles riding thermals that I could not see without the binoculars).
The focus knob is easy to use, they are very easy on the eyes, the price is reasonable, and I even like the color. These would make a fine gift for most any age group and for most user levels.
These binoculars are spectacular. WOW!

I've had cheap Bushnell's prior to owning the Monarch 12x. I took them out to the back of the house as soon as they arrived. Wow, what a wonderful surprise. The crispness of the images even in fading dusk was amazing. Add to that the 12x magnification. I just learnt what it is to experience the pleasure of having a great pair of binoculars. And, the price is unbeatable. I'm totally satisfied.

I've had these binoculars for 4 years now, and there is nothing about them that I don't like. I work seasonal bird field jobs in all kinds of places and environments, and these have done very well in all conditions. Most of my employers have offered me a set of binoculars to use, to reduce wear and tear on my personal ones--but after a brief attempt with each model, I've never been able to bring myself to do it. As a result of that wear and tear, I recently sent mine in to Nikon for repairs ($10 to replace all four glass lenses and both plastic eyecups--no complaints there!) and in the meantime I've been attempting to use a loaned pair of Swarovskis. I can't stand them. Granted, they're only 8x30s, but even the optical quality is noticeably worse--which I never would have guessed, given the reputation (and expense) of Swarovski optics, even if it's not one of their higher-end models.
I'm not quite sure what another reviewer means by reds and greens "separating." I have always thought the optical quality, clarity, and color of these binoculars are exceptional. Just like looking at it with my own eyes... but 10x closer! I also like the strap that comes with the binoculars; it's never irritated my neck and I love the length and width of it. And, while I did need to have the eyecups replaced (one had started cracking), bear in mind that this was after 4 years of almost daily use... usually all day long in varied weather conditions. The twist-up style is much easier to use than folding down a rubber cup, as you must with some other models.
The moral of the story is that I don't anticipate ever switching to another model of binoculars. These have passed my test, again and again, with flying colors.

These are no ordinary binoculars. They are a miracle. They exceeded my expectations and I am proud to own them now.
Its usable right out of the box. The controls are very easy to use, even my 4 year old son knows how to focus the binoculars. You can keep the zoom level at 10X for most viewing. When you really want to zoom in, the binoculars provide upto 22X zoom by just sliding a lever. At 22X zoom, you need steady hands or a tripod to view appropriately. The 10X zoom is more than sufficient for exploring the distant objects around you.
For starters, when you buy a binocular, you need to consider two aspects. The binoculars are usually represented in the format A X B where A is the magnification and B is the diameter of the front lens in millimeters. The more the better for both A and B.
This Nikon binocular is capable of magnifications ranging from 10 to 22. The front lens is 50 mm which is more than sufficient for everyday daylight and night viewing.
The Nikon lens are world-class providing crystal clear view. At night I focussed on the moon and could see the mountains on the moon very clearly.
Overall I would definitely recommend this product for everyone. Even adults who think that binoculars are for children must try this product as it will amaze them. Not to speak of teens who will marvel their "birds" in close-up!!!

I really like these binoculars. They are light, bright, work well with eyeglasses and I give five stars because they are excellent value. I bought these binoculars for a nature trip in the Amazon and I use them in the back yard, on hikes and occasionally at the symphony or opera. My sister, an ornithologist, told me to get the most expensive binoculars I could afford. To her binoculars are a professional tool but I really didn't want to afford a thousand bucks like she was suggesting. She also told me to try out binoculars in dim conditions and to get 8x42 rather than 10x42 because it is easier to find what you are looking for and easier to hold so that the view is not shaking.
In the store I compared these with the same power Leica. The Leica was nice but a lot heavier. I could tell the Leica was better, but not three times the price better. It was dusk, overcast and drizzling (ideal conditions for trying out binoculars). For example, I was looking at the brick work under the awning on a building about a block away from the store. I could see more detail in the brickwork and felt more `there' with the Leica. In brighter conditions the difference is less noticeable and I like the lighter weight of the Monarchs.
On the Amazon trip I has the opportunity to compare binoculars with other people. Most people had brought cheaper binoculars and I think as a result their wildlife watching experience was compromised. The only people who had brought comparable binoculars were avid bird watchers. They had Opticrons which are in the same price ballpark as the Leica. Again, they are excellent binoculars but not three times better.
I like the hard rubber-armor construction. It does not become slippery when wet. They feel solid but light. I am not so nervous about dropping the binoculars as I would be with the Leica or Opticrons. The firm turn-and slide eyecups (like the Lieca) are a huge improvement over the fussy soft foldable rubber eyecups found on many other binoculars.
Looking for binoculars is a lot like looking for Hifi speakers. As the price goes up, the quality improves. At a certain price point you can no longer tell the next price level is clearly better; it is mostly just different. That is a good place to buy, and is something of a personal judgement. Minolta has some binoculars that are priced between the Monarchs and the high end and I think the Monarchs are every bit as good.

Nikon Action 12x50 EX Extreme ATB Binocular Review

Nikon Action 12x50 EX Extreme ATB Binocular

(More customer reviews)
This binocular simply fell into my hand as though it were made for me personally. Love at first feel? Yes!
I compared this binocular to several others in the same price range, here is what I found:
Fit and finish: Nikon is easily the equal of any Vixen or Pentax or Olympus (I didn't try Canon).
Feel: Nikon was by far the best.
Optics: Nikon did something clever here. First of all, they gave this one a wider field of view than, for example, the Pentax PCF. Looking through the Pentax (and, by the way, I have a high regard for Pentax and *love* their Papilio series, but that is another binocular for a different purpose) after using the Nikon, the view seemed dimmer and claustrophobic. With the Nikon, you have that wonderful feeling of actually being "out there" in the field or in the sky with your object. And everything is so bright and sharp! The Nikon really excels in sharpness at the center.
However, Nikon did another clever thing (and I checked a couple of pairs of these Nikon binos to see if this was true generally, and it was): at this price point you can't possibly have the whole field of view perfectly sharp. No binocular is perfectly sharp at the edges. Here is what Nikon did, best as I can tell: they put the sloppiest edges at the outside and top of the field of view. Wow! Think about it: if you had to compromise somewhere, you want to compromise AWAY from the center and bottom. Why? Because, the inside edge of the FOV of each barrel is where the object will be. And, most likely (especially for terrestrial viewing), the object or its environment will also be resting on or near the bottom (think of a bird in a tree or an animal on the ground) So, Nikon seems to have made sure that the bottoms and inside edge of the FOV was as sharp as possible, while allowing the far outside and top edges to be a little worse. Smart!
There is some chromatic abberation, but that, too, is unavoidable at this price. Even some very high priced camera lenses (with only one barrel to worry about) have this. The CA is not at all objectionable. A little rim of faint purple at the edges of the FOV in high contrast situations.
A very nice binocular. Not too heavy, not too big, very comfortable to use, excellent imagery, top-of-the-line sharpness-at-center, great construction. I expect to get a lifetime's enjoyment out of them.

Nikon ProStaff ATB 8x25 Waterproof Binocular Review

Sharpness: Excellent
Flatness of field: Very Good
Ergonomics: Excellent
Eye Relief: w/o glasses- Excellent, with glasses-Very Good
These binoculars are very friendly to hold, both in your hand and to your eye. The sharpness and contrast are excellent with the exception when looking toward a bright light source. This is when flare kicks in and contrast suffers. These binos are prone to flare and that is about my only criticism of them.
The rubberized surface is ideal. It lends a grabby texture that's easy to grip but doesn't have that gummy quality that makes some attract lint and dirt. The eye cup design is great and has a relatively wide ring diameter and a fairly broad surface that is very comfortable. I mention this as most minis have an eyecup design that is too small and fits too deeply into one's eye socket causing discomfort. These feel like mid size binos in use.
The focus knob has a very nice feel to it. Very smooth with no play. The large diameter focus knob is like what you'd find on a full-sized bino and is better than most minis.
The simple case it comes with is quite useful and has a belt loop. Being as light as they are they carry on a belt without issue. The rain guard (ocular cap) works OK, though not as snug as I'd like.
I like the reverse porro prism design of these (and other makers) better than the two parallel tube (roof prism) design for a mini binocular as they feel more substantive and are easier to hold steady.
Other binoculars I currently own: Leica 8x32 BNs, Leica 10x42 BAs. In the past I have owned Leica, Minolta, and Celestron minis as well.
Keeping in mind they are an inexpensive compact, these are an overall excellent binocular and a super value IMO.

Nikon 8358 Monarch Gold Laser1200 Rangefinder Review

Just used this Nikon LR1200 today for the first time. Specific likes:
- well made, compact size fits easily in my golf bag- no larger than my open hand; made by Nikon, who know something about optics...what more could you want?
- waterproof construction- Nikon claims you can old it under 5' of water for 5 minutes without damage.
- easy to use; 1 button point and shoot.
- I have the co-branded Calloway unit, which comes with a nifty little pouch that slips around the unit to protect it and has cover to protect front optics. Lacks one for the rear eyepiece but I found that a soda cap fits perfect.
- Image is clear and sharp; 7x optics quickly pick up distant objects; worked well on the white pin flags at a local course. Quickly picked up a flag at 525 yds! Zeroed in on a truck at 735 yds. Pins within 250 yds easily detected.
- unit allows you to "pan" your field and will display the closest object first. Very neat when you need to resolve a pin flag with a bunch of trees in the background.
- the optics have a diopter adjustment to compensate for vision.
- the battery compartment is very secure. (screw on cover with o-ring, that you can tighten/loosen with a coin
- after some on-line searches, picked it up new for $289, free shipping and no-tax... Great buy; compared to the $400+++ Bushnell 1500/1600 units.
- tried a Bushnell 550 before this... dont even bother thinking about using their 4x model... not suited for golf. And read reviews on some of the other Bushnell units before you buy.
- based on my two experiences, this LR1200 wont disappoint;
- hopes this helps; I am a real hacker (bogey golf) and was disappointed when I went searching for reviews.
