(More customer reviews)I am a professional photographer using Nikon's D300 and D3 for portraiture and weddings. These are both super cameras that have been a boon to my business. However, like all modern SLRs they are big, heavy, noisy and the automation works for most everything. I came to photography when cameras were much simpler and actually required a knowledge of how a camera works. I am glad I did, as to use the DP1 to its full advantage you must know what you are doing.
Photography is a passion even in my off time and I wanted something light, small, and quiet for the candids of life that I would always have with me. The poor image quality, control, and responsiveness of compacts was not what I was looking for.I briefly considered the M8 but for a non-money making "fun" camera it was way too much to spend. The DP1 filled the bill for me.
Why? You will read complaints about slowness. If you are a point and shooter, that is correct, and you should avoid this camera.
However, if you are a photographer read on. During my research I read an article written by a Leica user that said he was always ready to shoot by having his camera prefocused and ready to go. That is the best way to use the DP1 also. Use manual focus and the correct aperture for your expected depth of focus needs. Unlike any other compact camera you can both turn off the lcd and the sleep mode and walk around with the camera ready to shot in an instant. Of course with the lcd off you will need the optional viewfinder.
I normally shoot in A mode and the controls allow fast changes to aperture and exposure compensation, something else no other compact camera does.
The image quality at ISO 100 is astounding and loses some quality as it goes up to ISO 800. 800 is somewhat disappointing as color saturation drops off dramatically.
Yes it is slow for point and shooters and has a lousy lcd but if that is sacrifices Sigma had to make for a superior image from a compact camera at this price point its fine with me. I am having a blast with this camera as it opens up a whole new world of image possibilities. I highly recommend it to anyone who has a photography style that suits a M8 but does not want to spend a fortune for the tool to do it with. Its not a M8 of course but a bargain in comparison.

Bushnell Yardage Pro Scout Laser Rangefinder Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased the Bushnell Yardage Pro Scout for my son for his birthday and he absolutely loves it. I have a Nikon compact 800 laser rangefinder that I thought was best small package laser rangefinder available, that is until I saw the Pro Scout.
I still like the Nikon, but the Pro Scout works equally well, with just slightly less range capability. The big plus for the Pro Scout is it's size. It is about half or less the size and weight of the Nikon (or Bushnell) 800 compact and comes with a pouch that when it's on your belt you almost don't notice it's there.
If I didn't already have the Nikon, I would buy a Pro Scout for myself in a minute.

Reflectivity of Target Types Because rangefinders "bounce" a laser beam off the target in order to take a measurement, their range is partially determined by the reflectivity of the target. Ranges for moderately reflective targets, like trees, fall somewhere in the middle. Most experienced hunters will use their rangefinder to frequently estimate ranges to near and distant landmarks before they actually encounter a game animal. By "pre-measuring" ranges to spots where a trophy is likely to appear, they can concentrate on making an accurate shot when the moment of truth arrives.

(More customer reviews)At first I bought a $119 Bushnell rangefinder on sale at a local hunting outfitter store intending to use it on the golf course. It was similar to this one but did not have the Pinseeker technology and was virtually usless for my needs. After returning it I zeroed in on this model which cost quite a bit more money but was designed for golfing. And it operates as advertised. Just line up the little circle on the flag and watch for the verifying cirlce in the viewfinder and read the distance. You can also zoom in and get the distance on any sand traps that are in front of the green to see if you want to lay up or hit over. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because it requires a steady hand in order to correctly sight on a flag, but this is a common trait with any hand-held rangefinder.

Bushnell Medalist Laser Rangefinder Review

golf range finders.
Specifically, the Bushnell Medalist range finder is a "WINNER". I
lowered my score right away. Not by hitting the ball better, but by avoiding the traps (I can measure where they are). I was aslo able to
pick the right club for the right distance.
I found the range finder to be very, very accurate. After a week
at my main course, and playing three other difficult golf courses,
I play with a new "Tiger" like confidence.
The summary follows:
Positive:
1) Accuracy
2) Small size ( you can mange with one hand, although you need two to
get a "steady" reading. The "Pinseeker" mode almost eliaintes this
issue though.
3) Cost (it is worth the value of $299)
4) Battery life (it has not blinked after a week of daily use) 9 volt
replaceable battery
5) Universal use (it works on ALL courses - no maps, PC, or SD memory
issues)
6) If you are in a scramble, guess who is the most popular player?
Negative:
1) The case is too flimsy. It loks good, but is not rugged enough.
Mine tore after 3 day. I bough a camera case for it that is much
more durable and is portable enght for both my portbale cart,a nd
a riding cart.
That's it. if you are on the limb about what to buy. Buy a range finder. You'll not regret it.

(More customer reviews)Purchased one of thes not too long ago and have come to absolutely love it. It is light, easy to carry and fits perfectly in your hand. The buttons are located in a position that makes them easy to use. Almost from the first use, I could tell the buttons apart and did not have to look to make sure which I was pushing. Operation of the unit is very intuitive. I only read the instructions once and could easily understand how to use it, and how to change modes while I am using it.
It measures distances rapidly and unless I am measuring at a really steep angle to the item it has never had difficulty returning a measurement during my learning process.
This rangefinder is easy to carry and very accurate. It was money well spent!!!!

(More customer reviews)I ordered the Chuck Adams edition laser range finder with the intention of using it for my annual blacktail deer hunting trip. I thought the angle compensation feature would be helpful should I decide to use a tree stand. The range finder produced an accurate range when it worked and there is the problem. It only worked half of the time! For some unknown reason, it would just not show a range when I pressed the button more than 50% of the time. It did'nt seem to matter what the background or environment was; sunny, shade, windy, still, even highly reflective signs. I work and help raise two children; I don't have a lot of leisure time and my hunting trips are few and far between. When I go hunting, I need a product that does what it is supposed to do. I returned it and am awaiting my refund.

Nikon ProStaff Laser440 - Rangefinder ( laser ) 8 x Review

(More customer reviews)I have compared the Nikon ProStaff Laser Rangefinder 440 to a Nikon Prostaff 550 and a Bushnell Yardage Pro Sport 450, using all three on the same targets.
NOTE: I have NOT tried these units on a golf course. All three units are made in China.
The Nikon 440 is a very capable laser range finder, and is very similar in ability to the Nikon 550.
The main differences between the two are the slightly greater range of the 550 model.
Despite the understatement of the advertising, I have ranged out to 706 yards with the Nikon 550, and 545 yards with the Nikon 440.
Dark trees can be ranged up to about 400 yards with the Nikon 550, and 330 yards with the Nikon 440. Deer can be ranged to 300 yards reliably with both. The 550 model has a magnification of 6X and the 440 unit is 8X and I greatly prefer the 8X view of the Nikon 440.
Both have a diopter adjustment which is adequate for my eyeglass correction of +5 diopters with and without my glasses.
I also find the long rubber eyepiece of the 550 unit difficult to use if I change to and from eyeglasses, as I do not like to keep folding the rubber down, and I know from experience that you can fold these type of eyepieces only so many times before the rubber (or vinyl) cracks.
Ranging Performance is:
Dark trees: Nikon 550 400 yards, Nikon 440 330 yards
Telephone poles: Nikon 550 430 yards, Nikon 440 360 yards
Deer: unobstructed medium deer, both 300 yards
Dark shrubs: Nikon 550: 400 yards, Nikon 440 350 yards
Light colored buildings: Nikon 550 535 yards, Nikon 440 453 yards
Very reflective targets: trucks, Nikon 550 706 yards, Nikon 440 535 yards
They both acquire targets well and range accurately when compared to other units.
I am biased toward the Nikon 440 unit, because:
1. it is smaller and handier
2. It has 8X magnification which I really like and use (and need)
2. It is adequate for anything out to 300 yards and often 400 yards
3 It costs about 60 dollars less than the Nikon 550
5. The battery compartment screws down 3 turns and seems better sealed than the 1/4 turn compartment of the Nikon 550
6. The optics are virtually the same on both except for magnification. Both are clear and bright.
7. Generally, the range is perhaps 15 or 20 percent more for the Nikon 550 unit due to the higher laser power (15 watts pulse vs the 8.5 watts pulse of the 440 unit).
Other Notes;
The Bushnell Yardage Pro Sport 450 is not anywhere in the same league as the other two, despite the price (I paid 179). The Bushnell will not read beyond 230 yards on any but the most reflective target, despite what the advertising says. The longest range I could measure with it was 330 yards and that on a reflective sign. This unit is supposed to range up to 800 yards (732 meters)! It will range a tree up to 200 yards as claimed, but the best it will do on medium deer is 140 yards. It is a 4 power monocular, and will range down to 6 yards, the others will range as close as 11 yards (10M). This Bushnell is by far the lowest quality of any unit I have seen. Bushnell claims water resistance, but there are various entry points for water, and if the unsealed battery compartment is opened, green circuit board is visible. If the rubber eyepiece protector is removed (all too easily) the optics are exposed and vulnerable. There is absolutely nothing to protect the electronics and optics from water and moisture. That along with very poor ranging capabilities make this Bushnell Yardage Pro Sport 450 nothing more than a child's toy, albeit an expensive one.

(More customer reviews)This is a great range finder. It reads quickly is quiet and the included camo case is nice and keeps it from making noise if you accidentally bump it against something. I do have one complaint though I wish that you could toggle the orange during low light setting off and on. A lot of the time it makes it where I have trouble seeing through the range finder to what I am trying to aim at. Even though it is suppose to help you in low light I find it more distracting. Which is why I try to pin point spots while I have light out in case the deer come when I have lower light I will know about the yardage. Other than the orange I couldn't be happier with this rangefinder especially since I picked it up for the same price the regular Archer's Choice costs at my local sporting store.

Nikon 8358 Monarch Gold Laser1200 Rangefinder Review

- well made, compact size fits easily in my golf bag- no larger than my open hand; made by Nikon, who know something about optics...what more could you want?
- waterproof construction- Nikon claims you can old it under 5' of water for 5 minutes without damage.
- easy to use; 1 button point and shoot.
- I have the co-branded Calloway unit, which comes with a nifty little pouch that slips around the unit to protect it and has cover to protect front optics. Lacks one for the rear eyepiece but I found that a soda cap fits perfect.
- Image is clear and sharp; 7x optics quickly pick up distant objects; worked well on the white pin flags at a local course. Quickly picked up a flag at 525 yds! Zeroed in on a truck at 735 yds. Pins within 250 yds easily detected.
- unit allows you to "pan" your field and will display the closest object first. Very neat when you need to resolve a pin flag with a bunch of trees in the background.
- the optics have a diopter adjustment to compensate for vision.
- the battery compartment is very secure. (screw on cover with o-ring, that you can tighten/loosen with a coin
- after some on-line searches, picked it up new for $289, free shipping and no-tax... Great buy; compared to the $400+++ Bushnell 1500/1600 units.
- tried a Bushnell 550 before this... dont even bother thinking about using their 4x model... not suited for golf. And read reviews on some of the other Bushnell units before you buy.
- based on my two experiences, this LR1200 wont disappoint;
- hopes this helps; I am a real hacker (bogey golf) and was disappointed when I went searching for reviews.

Nikon RifleHunter 550 Brown Review

(More customer reviews)My first impression is that this is a very good rangefinder for the money. Without using the owner's manual, I was quickly able to check ranges of several objects at our ranch - trees, metal surfaces and animals were ranged for variety - and all of them appeared to be quite accurate. Conditions were windy and mostly sunny and my time was limited, but so far I'm impressed. I look forward to using it under other conditions, such as lower light/overcast/etc. While hog hunting with a friend recently, he was using his Leupold rangefinder and was unable to get it to change to the proper mode through repeated attempts without his manual. From what I have read and from my limited experience to this point, the Nikon is a simpler device. I found it to be user-friendly and intuitive. I also own a Nikon Monarch UCC scope which has been quite impressive, with great low-light performance. I hope the quality level of this rangefinder continues to be on par with what I have come to expect from my scope. Initial results are very good!

Sharp and accurate, easy to use, small and comfortable in your hand, easy to store. The plus factor is that it's waterproof and doesn't fog up. It's clearness in optics is fantastic. Nikon ProStaff 550 Laser Rangefinder (Green) Review

(More customer reviews)I have compared the Nikon ProStaff Laser Rangefinder 550 to a Nikon Prostaff 440 and a Bushnell Yardage Pro Sport 450, using all three on the same targets.
Note: I have NOT tried these units on a golf course. All three units are made in China.
The Nikon 550 is a very capable laser range finder, and is very similar in ability to the Nikon 440.
The main differences between the two are the slightly greater range of the 550 model.
Despite the understatement of the advertising, I have ranged out to 706 yards with the Nikon 550, and 545 yards with the Nikon 440.
Dark trees can be ranged up to about 400 yards with the Nikon 550, and 330 yards with the Nikon 440. Deer can be ranged to 300 yards reliably with both. The 550 model has a magnification of 6X and the 440 unit is 8X and I greatly prefer the 8X view of the Nikon 440.
Both have a diopter adjustment which is adequate for my eyeglass correction of +5 diopters with and without my glasses.
I also find the long rubber eyepiece of the 550 unit difficult to use if I change to and from eyeglasses, as I do not like to keep folding the rubber down, and I know from experience that you can fold these type of eyepieces only so many times before the rubber (or vinyl) cracks.

Ranging Performance is:
Dark trees: Nikon 550 400 yards, Nikon 440 330 yards
Telephone poles: Nikon 550 430 yards, Nikon 440 360 yards
Deer: unobstructed medium deer, both 300 yards
Dark shrubs: Nikon 550: 400 yards, Nikon 440 350 yards
Light colored buildings: Nikon 550 535 yards, Nikon 440 453 yards
Very reflective targets, eg trucks, Nikon 550 706 yards, Nikon 440 535 yards
They both acquire targets well and range accurately when compared to other units.
I am biased to wards the Nikon 440 unit, because:
1. it is smaller and handier
2. It has 8X magnification which I really like and use (and need)
2. It is adequate for anything out to 300 yards and often 400 yards
3 It costs about 60 dollars less than the Nikon 550
5. The battery compartment screws down 3 turns and seems better sealed than the 1/4 turn compartment of the Nikon 550
6. The optics are virtually the same on both except for magnification. Both are clear and bright.
7. Generally, the range is perhaps 15 or 20 percent more for the Nikon 550 unit due to the higher laser power (15 watts pulse vs the 8.5 watts pulse of the 440 unit).
Other notes;
The Bushnell Yardage Pro Sport 450 is not anywhere in the same league as the other two, despite the price (I paid 179). The Bushnell is simple to use but will not read beyond 230 yards on any but the most reflective target, despite what the advertising says. The longest range I could measure with it was 330 yards and that on a reflective sign. This unit is supposed to range up to 800 yards (732 meters)! It will range a tree up to 200 yards as claimed, but the best it will do on medium deer is 140 yards. It is a 4 power monocular, and will range down to 6 yards, the others will range as close as 11 yards (10M). This Bushnell is by far the lowest quality of any unit I have seen. Bushnell claims water resistance, but there are various entry points for water, and if the unsealed battery compartment is opened, green circuit board is visible. If the rubber eyepiece protector is removed (all too easily) the optics are exposed and vulnerable. There is absolutely nothing to protect the electronics and optics from water and moisture. That along with very poor ranging capabilities make this Bushnell Yardage Pro Sport 450 nothing more than a child's toy, albeit an expensive one.
