Think Tank ~ Urban Disguise 30 Review

Think Tank ~ Urban Disguise 30

This bag is typical of the Think Tank quality overall; it is exceptionally well mde, with plentitude of pockets, sits well on shoulder, does NOT look like camera bag which is huge plus for me when carrying around several thousands of dollars worth of gear. Front pocket can carry your non-pro DSLR, interios has plenty of room for a couple of lens & extras. Business card pocket, beautifully finished. Another 5 star product and I own several LowePro & Kata bags of which I am very fond. The Urban Disguise is just one step above and a little different in category. You will never regret buying this.

First, I want to compliment Think Tank generally on the quality of the gear they make. I have many of their products and they are all built, well, like Tanks...very rugged, well-padded, and not too expensive. Overall a good buy.
This bag fits a 70-200 2.8 with the hood mounted on a medium/large camera such as the Nikon D300, or a slightly larger lens, such as the 200 2.0 or 300 2.8 with the hood reversed. Super-sized pro cameras (D3, D3x) are a very tight fit, but can be squeezed in as well.
The interior is completely configurable using the supplied foam dividers, giving you lots of flexibility in how you carry stuff. I tend to have it setup so that I have smaller lenses face up on one side, with the large lens mounted to a body in the center. Using ThinkTank's modular components you can also strap additional items onto the sides or back of the pack in a secure way.
The straps are well padded and are easily adjusted to distribute the weight fairly well. I often use it as a shoulder bag, and unlike some other brands, I find it stays put well - the straps don't have a tendency to slide off my shoulder.
The pack gets heavy when loaded to the max, so I also tend to use a ThinkTank belt (not included) to keep the weight balanced across my shoulders and lower back. Feels much more secure this way. It also comes with a waterproof cover that can be attached quickly in the event of sudden downpour.
To give you an idea, right now inside the bag I have:
- Nikon D300 with MB10 grip
- Nikon 70-200mm 2.8 zoom
- Nikon 16-85mm DX lens
- Nikon 10.5mm DX lens
- Nikon 60mm 2.8 AFS macro lens
- Lensbaby Composer
- SB 600 flash
- Various memory cards, filters, small tools, spare batteries, etc
Outside the pack, I have:
- SB 900 flash in a modular ThinkTank pouch
- Monostat Carbon-Fiber monopod
- Nikon 500mm reflex lens (old) in a ThinkTank pouch
- Nikon 24-70 2.8 zoom, in a ThinkTank pouch
My only gripe is that I can't get all three of my pro-sized zooms inside the bag at the same time. Like many, I own the Nikon 14-24, 24-70, 70-200 combo, and these won't all fit in the bag at once, so I usually carry a second camera body with one of them mounted, one inside the bag, and one outside the bag in a pouch. Only other criticism is that there could be a few more storage pouches on the outside of the bag for small items.
I don't typically carry a computer with me in my camera bag, but if I needed to, I'd probably look for one of the larger Think Tank bags. Still, this bag loaded with all my gear feels like about the most I can comfortably lug around all day.

MADE Products CA-2001-BLK Seattle Sling Waterproof Bag (Black) Review

MADE Products CA-2001-BLK Seattle Sling Waterproof Bag (Black)

(More customer reviews)
I have been a photographer for over thirty years and I was in the wholesale professional photographic equipment business for about twenty. I now photograph wild birds in some of the harshest environments on earth so when I review an item like this I like to put it through the wringer. And that is just what I did.
First: I like the look and the basic design of the bag. The velcro for the top flap is really heavy duty. It is a good substitute for zippers IF you are using the orange bag inside of the case. The orange protection bag can be pulled out and the insert with the dividers can be reinserted without the water resistant bag. There is space for memory cards and filters just above where the top lid attaches to the case, but no where else. The backpack-type strap is unique and I liked it, although it took some getting used to. The interior space is surprisingly small considering the size of the bag. However, I don't believe that this was designed to be an "all-purpose" camera bag (as are most Tenbas and Lowe Pros). This was made for transporting equipment (photo or otherwise) into really wet environments. So that's what I tested it for.
I used the orange "bag" for all of the water tests. I stuffed the interior dividers with colored paper (I was not up for risking my own photo gear) that turns really dark when exposed to the slightest bit of moisture. Next, I took it outside and took out my garden hose and my trusty eight-way spray nozzle.
I started with the "mist" setting and held the nozzle just two feet from the bag and sprayed all around it for about 20 minutes. If you have ever been close to a great falls you have an idea of what I was testing for. The bag wipes off surprisingly well. The paper was completely dry. Success #1.
Second I used a setting that would simulate a pretty good rain storm. Since I have been caught in these many times with my own camera bag in the past (including in the rain forest of Peru and a down-pour in a South Florida that I thought would never end) I felt that one hour was just about the right amount of time. I noticed some water inside of the case itself but not inside of the orange bag. It was still dry inside. Success #2.
Now, I wouldn't have subjected the bag to this last test if it were not for the photo on the tag that showed the bag being submerged in water. I wanted to see how well the Camera Armor bag protected gear from an accidental fall into water. This has happened to me several times in my life and I have ended up damaging a Hassleblad, two Leicas and ruining a favorite view camera lens. Time for a dip in the pool!
I stood near the edge of the four foot deep part of a community swimming pool and imagined that I had a brand new Canon 50D (yet to be released at this time) and about $5000 in lenses in the bag. I "lost" my balance, fell into the water and immediately raised the bag out of the pool as quickly as I would have if it had been for real. Wow! No paper inside of the bag was even a little bit wet. However, if I had memory cards in the space that I think they were meant to be they would have been subjected to a drowning unless they were in their own little plastic cases. Success #3!
I took out the colored paper and stuck white paper inside it now. I took it to a dry field and almost covered it with dirt and sand. Again, the interior of the bag had dirt in it, but not the protective orange bag. Success #4. I was tired and gave up in any further torture.
This is a GREAT bag for what it is designed for and worth the cost. But I have to be honest and say that this model should not be considered a "Pro" bag. There just isn't enough room for even enough gear for a day trip. Also, it is hard to get in and out of when using the orange bag. Where I think that this bag fits in is as a way for adventurists to carry a modest amount of sensitive gear and protect it from getting wet or dirty. I could put a digital SLR with a zoom attached, a flash, a GPS and radio or two. Until it is available in a larger model I would suggest the pro gets an external cover for his/her existing case. If you think that you and your bag might get submerged carry your equipment in a Pelican case.
I give the Camera Armor 5 stars for water resistance and 3 for being a well thought-out camera bag, so 4 stars in all.

National Geographic NG 2345 Earth Explorer Midi Shoulder Bag Review

National Geographic NG 2345 Earth Explorer Midi Shoulder Bag

(More customer reviews)
***** November 23, 2009: See addendum at the end of the review
This is a very useful day bag-style camera bag.
It is absolutely perfect for something the size of the smaller Digital Rebels (XT, XTi, etc.) with a mounted walk-around lens such a Canon 17-85mm IS or a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8.
For something like the size of a 20D or Nikon D300, it is a *tiny* bit snug, but still fits pretty darn well with a lens mounted.
You even have room for another lens (NOT something like a 70-200 f2.8L--the bag is not big enough for that), but something like a 50mm prime or another wide zoom, AND an external flash. Might be snug, but it WILL fit.
Of course, this would also work with with compact point-and-shoot and range finders--these smaller cameras will leave you more room for other stuff.
Access is easy, as the top flap closes securely with brass snaps. Inside the main compartment, there's a separate padded camera case with a top flap, and it is held securely in the main compartment with velcro.
There's a fold-away zippered rain cover for when you're on the move but don't need super fast access to your gear. When you need quick access and you don't need the rain cover, there's a handy velcro strap that will keep it securely in place and folded out of your way.
There are two pockets on the front of the flap secured by velcro for quick access to small items (think cleaning cloths, business cards, etc.) and two pockets on the front of the bag underneath the flap secured by zippers (for keys, pens, a phone, memory cards, wallet, etc.)
There's also a flat, zippered compartment in the rear where you can keep maps, passports, and notebooks, and other documents.
Overall, the compartments are plentiful, useful, easy to access, and you can tell that a lot of thought went into the bag's design.
Of course, one of the factors that attracted me to it was the "cool" factor, and yes, I think the bag is quite cool (that's probably one of the reasons you're looking at it anyway, right?) It doesn't disappoint in that deparment--nor does it disappoint in any others.
It would be nice of the bag were just 2" wider. It would let the space on the left and right side of the SLR really breath and allow some room for those carrying L lenses.
The bag's color is a little bit greener in hue than the khaki that you see in photographs of the bag.
These are merely nitpicks, though, and doesn't take away from the great design in the form and functionality of this beautiful bag.
******Addendum:
I traveled to Hawaii on a 7-day honeymoon with this bag, carrying a Canon EOS 20D, a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8, and a Sigma 55-200mm lens, plus CF cards and extra batteries, cleaning cloths, etc. Camera and lenses were on the snug side but fit nicely and securely. I felt confident that my gear was protected.
All the pockets and flaps described above are amazingly useful when you're on a trip, on the go. I used each compartment to its fullest not only for gear, but for brochures, wallets, cell phones, boarding passes, and all the other stuff you end up with when you're on a trip involving an airline flight. I'm very happy with how well designed this bag is; easy, instant access to the stuff you need right away.
STILL highly recommended.

National Geographic NG 2475 Earth Explorer Medium Shoulder Bag Review

National Geographic NG 2475 Earth Explorer Medium Shoulder Bag

I quite like this bag - I think it will become my airline travel bag of choice. It will be great for the purpose, even with no camera equipment at all!
It is not quite true that it won't hold a 17" laptop. I have a 17" Macbook Pro - it fits fine inserted vertically into the internal laptop pocket. The bag is cleverly designed because the soft internal roll up zipper flap will fold down over the laptop and still allow the zipper to close around the contents with ease. That said, with an oversize laptop the bag's exterior flap will not fall far enough to fasten the quick-lock snaps, and the carry handle will be a bit off center, but it is still secure and comfortable to carry, especially with the shoulder strap. The quick-lock deficiency could be fixed with either a) longer straps or b) additional snaps above the exterior pockets.
I have a D2X which does not fit into the padded internal compartment with lens on, but the camera body alone does fit, with room for a lens off to the side. The D2X with lens mounted does fit in the bag next to, but not in the padded internal bag, so spare lenses could go in the internal bag.
My D80 with lens fits beautifully in the internal compartment, and of course the bag is designed for a medium digital SLR, not a large.
The fabric is soft and inviting (great color, too), the accessory pockets useful and well thought out, and the bag is very comfortable to carry on the shoulder.
I would not want this bag loaded with camera equipment to be tossed about indiscriminately by, for example, baggage handlers...but in my own hands as my personal carry-on, I would be confident in the protection it offers.

Carrying Case for the Nikon Coolpix P80, 8400 Review

Carrying Case for the Nikon Coolpix P80, 8400

We purchased this Carrying Case for the Nikon Coolpix P80, 8400 for our son's P80 camera. He had researched cases, and this was THE one he wanted! It's a nice case, will protect the camera well, has lots of storage for his accessories, but wow, I never would have guessed that this is worth what we were charged. I've bought larger gadget bags for SLR cameras for less money than this went for. If you are considering this case, go to a local camera store that carries Lowepro cases (most do) and see this before you buy it. This is a "Lowepro Apex 100 AW Shoulder Bag"
I would have rated this higher had it cost less.
