After about a week with this camera, I really like it. I am a photographer and I needed a D-SLR, I wanted to start small, but not too small, and cheap. I did do a LOT of research before buying this. I would not recommend it if you need to take lots of fast consecutive shots, 2.5fps (frames per second) is not the fastest. Flash recovery time is a bit slow too. If you have large hands this camera might be strange too, the buttons have very little travel and are shallow and the grip is small. The menus and UI (user interface) are very very nice however. Easy to use and navigate. I really like this camera, it is basic, but has advanced features too. Color is pretty good, but for the best results you should play with the settings. Another plus is you can use Minolta lenses too. 18mm-55mm kit lens is pretty nice, 55mm-200mm is also very nice. Both are pretty light. Another thing is the shutter is kinda loud, not a huge down, but something to take note of. Also has a proprietary hot shoe (where you can attach an external flash) but you can buy an adapter online for about $5. The battery life is also pretty good. I really like it, and would recommend.

So far I am very happy with this high quality lens. Much sharper than newer Sigma lens. Constant aperture is also a good feature. The down side is that it is a little long and heavy but worth it. Also called the "beer Can" lens.

The Maxxum 70-210 f/4 telephoto is presently the most sought after medium telephoto in the Maxxum line up. It has obtained a "cult-like" status amongst Minolta photographers and is affectionately known by Minoltians as "The Beercan".The lens is well designed with high quality optics and the durable build of Minolta's legendary 1st generation vintage lens line up. It has been rumoured to have a Leica-influenced design and to have cost more to build than the sales price.Performance, vignetting, and distortion (wide open and stopped down) as well as color, flare, AF speed and build are all considered. The f/4 is the highest rated non-APO medium telephoto lens in the database, and for the most part, the rest of the available lenses that do rate higher will retail at $1000-2000.The build of the "beercan" is second to none. Most newer versions in the 70-210mm focal range sport a smaller maximum aperture and increased use of plastic components, both cosmetically and internally. Inside the f/4 version, die cast metal gears, parts and threads are found and the body is a solid metal casing with a beautiful enamel finish and wide rubber zoom grip. This construction does add to the weight of the lens, but for overall durability and a stable and more distinctive feel.

I am a photographer-wannabe graphic and web designer.
I have taken this product to photoquests where I've subjected it to different types of landscapes, light and climate situations -- even some soft rain.
So far it has behaved beautifully with good battery life, fast enough recording speeds and good image quality even on its lowest settings.
The lens work good, but have had trouble trying to get long distance pictures (not enough optical zoom) but it was to be expected, and can easily be fixed by attaching adequate lenses for said purpose.
Only issue may be with the LCD screen, as it tends to get scratches on its surface ratter easily, so I'd suggest you get some sort of cover for it (I haven't been able to find it where I live - Colombia, Southamerica). Guess I'll have to buy it through Amazon too.
Can't really give much more advice as I am just a n00b at this stuff, but I can tell you this camera has opened a new door in my head and career I think won't be closed for the foreseeable future.
Excellent product if you're just learning, I'll let you know if it keeps up.

I was warned about buying a lens with such a long zoom range because they are often a compromise in image quality. Not this lens. The clarity and sharpness is amazing. The zoom range is perfect for a walk-around lens. I have used it for landscapes, portraits, street photography and even telephoto shots of wildlife. The minimum focusing distance and 1:3.3 magnification make it a decent macro zoom and great for shooting flowers and other subjects close-up. This lens is on my camera 90% of the time. The only thing that would be better is if it had a constant f/2.8 aperture but then you wouldn't be able to get it at this price.

As one who takes tens of thousands of sports action photos annually, I was leery about buying a non-Sony lens for the Alpha, but the price and rebate offer made this a good bet that the lens would be useful for something.
It replaced the 28-70 & 75-300 Sony lenses and gave me the opportunity to use one lense instead of choosing one of the other two.
I must say, I was greatly impressed. The first games, both volleyball indoors and football outdoors with flash, were spectacular. The clarity and focus was much better than the Sony lenses ever gave me. I was able to get action from the whole game, not just what was close or far away, but both at once.
I really prefer this lense over the Sony lenses. That Tamron f/2.8 big telephoto is looking like my next buy. Thank you for providing me with the best lens I've had.

this lens performs as stated...it takes crystal clear shots, be they regular head shots or close up macro shots....the detail the lens is able to grab is incredible.....its ability to switch between AF and MF is easy and able to do on the fly while taking pics....came second nature quickly.
i would highly recommend this lens for someone who is looking to invest in a better lens than the kits lenses that came with your DSLR and is interested in taking a lot of close ups, be they of people or flowers/insects, etc....you will not be disappointed....they state the ratio is 1:1, but it sure seems like a lot more when you view your pics on the monitor......
its 2.8 max f-stop also allows one to take better pics in low light over the 4/5.6 kit lenses.
i own a sony a350 dslr and the lens performs smoothly with this camera.

After reading the reviews, I don't know if I would have purchased this lens. More than likely I would have gotten the Sony 11-18 f/4.5-5.6 as I believe, or at least I did at the time, that it takes sharper pictures. But, my wife, who loves me dearly, got me this lens for my birthday. I could have returned it, but since I had it, what the heck.
I've read that there is some distortion on straight lines if you shoot very close. I suppose that means like you see in those lens tests where they shoot a brick wall from a couple feet away and show you how those straight lines bend a bit. I don't shoot like that. I use this lens to take indoor shots and for landscapes and for me, it really delivers. I've read reviews that said this lens is very soft when used wide open. Those reviewers used this lens on other camera bodies, Canon and Nikon. Either I got an exceptional copy or my Sony Alpha magically sharpens the pictures, because my shots are fine and plenty sharp.
I've also read that compared with the Canon 10-22 and the Nikon 10-24 that this lens has more noise. I've shot at ISO 3200 and I'm not seeing any noise. Also, if you're reading this review, you've got a Sony Alpha body and you can't use those lenses anyway. This lens is faster than the Sony 11-18, it cost less, has a wider range and I'm keeping mine. I'm a lover of Sony lenses, have a lot of them, but this Tamron lens, in my opinion, matches Sony in both performance and build quality.

I hesitated purchasing this lens for my Nikon D40X--probably looked at this listing six or seven times before making the purchase. Truthfully I was worried about how inexpensive it is. Now, I'm probably a pretty average amateur photographer in that the majority of my pictures are family stuff: kids' sporting events, vacations, birthdays, and the like. But that doesn't mean I'm willing to compromise on quality just to save some money, and I know that the Nikon 55-200 is a quality lens.
But, I purchased based on Michael Del Priore's review (his was the only review at the time)--I figured, at this price (especially when compared to the Nikon 55-200), why not give it a shot, and I'm glad I did.
This is an excellent lens. The auto focus motor is fast and doesn't chew up the battery (I was concerned about that, but I shot almost 170 pictures at my son's games two Saturdays ago and didn't use any more battery than the Nikon 35-70 lens that came with the camera). Like "cinderoo" I haven't had any stabilization issues to speak of either, even snapping away while following 12 year old boys run the length of a field. That may be more of an issue with macro photography, but I'd imagine most of the (admittedly limited) macro photography I'd do would probably be with a tripod anyway.
Now, no one would mistake me for a professional photographer, but I can tell you that when I pull up photos shot with my D40X and this Sigma lens on my 24" iMac and view them full screen they are *everything* I was looking for when I decided to move to an SLR camera.

The Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 DG Macro Lens for Minolta Digital SLR Cameras is a telephoto lens that offers excellent cost performance and is optimized for use with digital SLR cameras. Capable of macro photography, this lens has a 1:2 maximum close-up magnification at the 300 millimeter focal length. It's the ideal high performance lens for portraits, sports photography, nature photography, and other types of photography that frequently use the telephoto range. The lens features a switch for changeover to macro photography at focal lengths between 200 millimeters and 300 millimeters, with a maximum close-up magnification from 1:2.9 to 1:2. The multi-layer lens coating and lens design reduce flare and ghosting, which is a common problem with digital cameras, and it also creates an optimum color balance through the entire zoom range. The minimum focusing distance is 59 inches at all zoom settings. The lens features a switch for changeover to macro photography at focal lengths between 200 millimeters and 300 millimeters with a maximum close-up magnification. Without changing the distance between camera and subject, you can change the shooting magnification.

I bought the Tamron to go with my Sony a200 dslr. The lens is really nice quality, and it works perfectly with the camera. Autofocus is quick and accurate. It is certainly not a pro quality lens, but for the price it is wonderful. I recommend this for anyone who wants a telephoto zoom to add to their dlsr. I tried out the Sony 70-300mm lens in a local store, but I was not impressed. In particular the usability of manual focus on the Sony lens was quite poor. This one is fantastic in that regard. You may not use manual focus that often, but it's nice to have a lens that can handle the job when you need it.

When I set out to buy a digital SLR I was first looking at the Nikon D40 ($499) and the Canon Rebel XTi ($599). I was turned off by the D40 due to it's 6MP sensor and lack of JPEG (fine) + Raw capabilities. I ended up passing on the Canon Rebel XTI because of the complaints about the low-quality kit lens which would've added costs beyond it's initial price tag.
Looking in various photography forums I discovered the Sony Alpha being recommended to other people looking in the same price range I was. It had a 10.1MP sensor, a good lens and was in the same price range as the Rebel XTi. I'm really happy with the purchase. Picture quality is excellent with the kit lens (SAL-1870). I also purchased the SAL-55200 telephoto lens and it is also a very nice lens for the money.
The battery life on the camera is excellent. The auto-focus is super fast and delving into the manual a bit will reveal many powerful configuration options (I don't think a lot of the Nikon and Canon fans who are critical of this camera ever did that because I've seen claims made on forums that just aren't true).
Some of the myths I've heard:
*No Shutter Lock (not true, just set the camera to "Manual" mode)
*Limited and expensive lens selection (Sony has a pretty decent selection on it's own but this camera can also use many Konica-Minolta lenses dating all the way back to 1985).
*Can't use standard flashes (while the Alpha does have a proprietary hot shoe which is lame, there are good adapters out there.
Lack of live preview a problem (this comes up a lot and apparently these people have never shot film before. most professionals I know do not need or use live preview)
There are many Pros but some that stand out in particular for this class are:
*Great bundled software (usually bundled software just sits in the box but the programs that Sony's included are actually quite good)
*3200 ISO (this is extremely rare in a camera in this price range)
*In camera image stablization
*Dynamic Range Optimization
All in all this camera is actually more in the class of the Nikon D80 as far as image quality goes but at nearly half the price.

I've been using this camera for several weeks now and I am very impressed. Here are the pros, in my opinion:
(1) The camera is very light and balanced when using the 18-55 lens. My wife was very surprised at the weight, or lack of it.
(2) Minolta Maxxum autofocus lenses work flawlessly with this camera! I have two old telephotos (20 years old) that produce incredible pictures with the new Sony. My old zoom flash works too, although I have to adjust exposure manually. Although the newer Sony lenses are much lighter, quality older lenses can be purchased on auction sites for a fraction of the cost of new lenses. Just remember: they will be much heavier than today's modern opticals.
(3) The A330 functions well as an automatic point and shoot camera, but also allows the flexibility to set everything manually if desired. I especially appreciate the ease of setting white balance for those flashless shots in changing lighting conditions. Depth of field was easy to adjust using Aperture priority.
(4) Picture quality is outstanding. Viewing the high definition output on my Sony Bravia through the HDMI output is an incredible way to preview photos. My TV remote even advances the photos in my camera as I watch!
(5) It will take both an SD memory card and a Memory Stick Pro Duo card AT THE SAME TIME. When one is full, the flip of a switch changes to the other card. Memory is mostly limited by the size of your wallet.
(6) The 3200 iso setting does well in low light situations, although there is some grain.
Here are a few cons:
(1) Some functions are buried in menus. This seems to be par for the course these days for all camera manufacturers.
(2) In moving up from an 8 mega-pixel camera, this 10.2 creates substantially larger files. It is important to take into consideration what the photos will be used for, and then set the resolution accordingly.
(3) The pop up flash knocks my hat off!I did a lot of research before purchasing this camera. The primary selling point was the ability to use my old Minolta lenses, and the tilting rear screen. This camera reminds me of my old 35mm. It feels like I am really taking pictures again, instead of merely capturing digital images. Those wanting or needed more features should look at the higher end Sonys. However, for beginner or intermediate photographers, this should fit the bill just fine!

I bought this lens to replace the kit lens that came with the Sony Alpha 300. I wanted an all-round lens so I wouldn't have to carry/change multiple lenses. I'm very happy with the results: excellent quality photo's, very easy to use because of the all-purpose 18-200 range.
Some observations:
- Although the lens doesn't feel overly heavy, if you point the camera down, the lens will "zoom in" due to gravity pulling it out. Understandable, but sometimes this feels clumsy. There is a zoom-lock switch btw.
- If you place the anti-direct-sunlight-cap-thingie backwards on the lens (to store it there), you cannot reach the manual focus ring anymore. Understandable, and documented, but still not practical.
Bottomline: very good buy, must-have if you choose to carry 1 lens max.
