Hoya SUPER HMC Haze UV(0) - Filter - UV - 55 mm Review

Hoya SUPER HMC Haze UV(0) - Filter - UV - 55 mm
Average Reviews:

The Super HMC UV filter is distinguished by the optical coating on both sides of the glass. This is a high quality filter and worthly of high end lenses. I have them on both an 80-200mm f/2.8 and a 17-55mm f/2.8 Nikon lenses. No demonstrable reduction to the image quality is visible on images taken with either lens. In my sports photography work, I am typically right on the court very close to the action and having the glass of a $1,000 lens exposed is too much of a gamble for me. The only downside of this lens is that it's a bit difficult to clean as streaks seem to stick to it if the lens cleaning cloth (microfiber)isn't wet enough with cleaning fluid. However, I've found that if I flip the cloth to a dry spot right and swirl from the center outward to the edge, away go the streaks. The price ($39) through the Amazon affiliated dealers is excellent.

Sigma DG 55mm Wide Multi-Coated Circular Polarizer Filter Review

Sigma DG 55mm Wide Multi-Coated Circular Polarizer Filter

The filter works well, it's very slim and is easy to adjust. It's a little hard focusing manually while using it; and in cold weather it can get stuck on the lens. If that happens putting a rubberband around it to provide a better grip will do the trick. I use it with my 18 mm lens and have never noticed any vignetting on the photos I take with it, although there is usually a little bit of a bluish cast to the photos. That however, is faint.

The Sigma Multi-Coated Wide Circular Polarizing Filter allows you to remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water and glass, and they also improve color saturation, clarity and contrast. This threaded filter is often used to increase the contrast and saturation in blue skies and white clouds, for example. Polarizing filters do not affect the overall color balance of a shot, and they will provide protection for your lens while shooting. This filter is recommended for color and black & white film, as well as digital photography. A polarizer is different than most filters in that it is composed of two pieces of glass, mounted independently inside a round frame so that one can be rotated relative to the other. As it is rotated, it increasingly cuts out glare and haze. With an SLR, you can actually observe this change through the viewfinder. Polarizers reduce glare from water, glass, or any non-metallic surface. You can also use a polarizer filter to darken blue skies. Polarizers come in two versions, linear and circular, and autofocus cameras will perform best with a circular polarizer, since a circular polarizer allows for proper exposure metering and/or autofocus distance settings. This particular circular polarizer is designed especially to benefit wide angle lenses, utilizing thinner filter rings to avoid vignetting, a common side effect of wide angle photography. Multi-Layer Coating for Superior Protection: Sigma has treated this filter with a multi-layer coating process, which, in addition to its reflection-reducing qualities, makes these filters especially scratch-resistant. This coating does not affect the optic characteristics of the filter, but significantly optimizes the protective effects.

Sigma EX DG 55mm Multi-Coated UV Filter Review

Sigma EX DG 55mm Multi-Coated UV Filter

I got these filters for $4.95/per and I couldn't be happier. I have used B&W filters in the past, and while these are not quite in the same league, they are awfully close. Well-built, good multicoating, what more can you ask? If my Sigma 50mm macro is any indication, Sigma knows a thing or two about making glass. If you need something affordable and high quality, look no further. I see absolutely no difference between these and the more common Hoya S-HMC filters (which I also own).

Digitally Optimised (DG) Filters EX DG filters benefit from Sigma's multi-layer lens coating, developed to counteract the highly reflective characteristic of image sensors. With older style filters, light would reflect off the image sensor, bounce off the lens and filter elements and re-enter the image sensor, creating a ghost image. The multi-layer coating dramatically reduces this effect. In addition to this, an optimum, neutral colour balance is ensured, increasing the white balance accuracy of the digital camera. Multi-coated UV Filter This filter perfectly eliminates the harmful effect of ultraviolet light. The multi-coated UV filter can be used with both colour and black-and-white film anddigital sensors. This is the most suitable filter for protective use and generalphotography.

I searched for these after I saw them reccommended in a digital photogrpahy book. The author reccommended them as a fantastic money saver. He was right! I've taken some amazing macro shots with them since! Even one where you can see my reflection on the tip of a fine point, ball point pen.
Hundreds of dollars cheaper than buying lenses and still highly effective!!

The filters are very good quality and the price is unbelievable. I found a similar polarizer at a camera store for 90 dollars. The quality is equal at a fraction of the cost.
