Hoya Moose 52mm Warm Circular Polarizer Glass Filter Review

Hoya Moose 52mm Warm Circular Polarizer Glass Filter
Average Reviews:

The bottom line first: This is the best polarizing filter out there for around 30 bucks or less.
I was looking for a polarizing filter for my S2 IS camera. And there are many filters out there at very cheap price. Some just around 15 bucks or less. And some are very expensive at several hundreds bucks for dSLR users. I didn't want to pay more than 50 bucks for a polarizing filter, but I didn't want to waste even a cent on a useless stuff. So I found this filter. It seemed to be a very good deal since it is a circular filter and it has warming effect. I bought it and I was impressed. All outdoor pictures look really good; the color is deep, water is clear, and clouds are all well shaped. Most nonmetal reflections was filtered out. You should remember that the best effect happens when your camera at 90 degree to the sun.
I doubt that those hundreds dollars filters will be much better than this one. They are certainly better but the difference must be very little in everyday pictures. If the professional one can filter out 99% of reflections, this polarizer must be able to filter out at least 96%.

Moose Warm Polarizer filters, an exclusive collaboration between Hoya and respected wildlife photographer and conservationist B. Moose Peterson of Wildlife Research Photography, are a combination of a polarizer and an 81A warming filter. For many years, polarizers have been used to remove reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water and glass as well as being used to darken blue skies to increase contrast in scenic photography. When using a camera with a split beam metering system (a metering system that employs a polarized half mirror) which is most of today's auto focus camera bodies, traditional linear polarizers will cause exposure errors due to their light absorption properties. Circular polarizers yield the same optical effect while not causing exposure problems with modern metering systemsA side effect of both linear and circular polarizes is they "cool down" or make the over-all color balance of a scene slightly bluish. The addition of the 81A glass corrects the color temperature, bringing the scene back to the original 5500K for daylight film's color balance. The 81A glass creates a much more pleasing and warm color balance to the entire scene while the circular polarizer increases color contrast and reduces the effect of atmospheric haze.

I am a huge fan of this filter-it stays on my Minolta 5D/28-75mm f2.8 lens almost always, except when shooting indoors. I tried a few other filters, both by this manufacturer, and the other leading filter makers, and this one was the best. Had the best color reproduction-truly seems like the combo filter does exactly what it says it will.
If you are after one filter to shoot landscapes, this is it.

Get your scissors, cut, design and think creativity, With this set of acetate filters, you can create any shape in any color you like and match your filters precisely to your subject and your imagination. Dream and create two, three or four colors in the same image, arranged as you like
Helpful hints : Handle the cut out fitters carefully and place them in the gelatin Holder (194), one of which is supplied with the Cokin Creative set. You may need several Modular Hoods (255) to protect the filters against the weather : check that the hoods do not vignette the image. These filters do not offer the optical quality of classical filters and cannot replace them for all applications.

Cokin filters were invented by professional photographer Jean Coquin. By using square filters like Cokin's, which fit into a holder and are attached to a lens via an adapter ring, the photographer has a number of immediate advantages. There is no need to duplicate filters to fit different size lenses, up to three filters can be used at once to create unique effects, and the photographer has control over the positioning of the effect on the photograph.

I have several Hoya filters for various lenses. This 86mm UV filter fit perfectly on my new Sigma 150-500mm zoom lens. With such a large surface on the front of the lens I didn't want to take a chance of scratching it or worse. The UV filter
protects the lens and provides added clarity to images. This is a high quality filter with mutliple coatings and a sturdy metal ring. It's worth the money.

Hoya Moose - Filter - warm circular polarizer - 77 mm Review

Hoya Moose - Filter - warm circular polarizer - 77 mm
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Many people don't understand polarizing light, so they expect more from these filters than they can deliver. Polarizing filters depend upon the angle of the light essentially being at right angles to the axis of the camera lens. When used with a very wide angle lens, the likelihood of that light being at a uniform angle to the axis is about nil. As a result, when you look through the viewfinder, and rotate the filter, you should expect to see non-uniform darkening of the sky, when used with a wide angle lens. However, once the light hits trees, fields etc., it is scattered -- so the inconsistency of polarizing effect is much less pronounced. The issue is solely in sky. You may be able to reduce that effect by shooting at a different angle to the source of light (sun) - but that probably won't include the scene. Even if you fix the aperture and shutter speed, you can't shoot multi-image panoramas with a polarizing filter.
Other points: It will do very little at mid-day at times of year when the sun is dead above you. Or when the sky is overcast (although the Moose will warm the cold light of that day). Or when the sun is at your back.
Having said that, the Hoya Moose filter is the most satisfying I have used in nearly 50 years of photography. The warming effect is simply beautiful. I bought mine (62, 67 and 77mm) before a trip to New Mexico last winter, and whether shooting from the ride up to the Scandia Tramway or Ghost Ranch where Georgia O'Keefe painted, the results were consistently spectacular. I used it on a 17mm F3.5 Tokina ATX-Pro in the Southwest, and again in Israel, and whether shooting old rocks or old temples, the effect was a blow-away. I ordinarily detest putting a $70 piece of glass in front of a $700 lens, because the risk of inter-surface reflections cutting contrast is pronounced.* But when the light was right, that Moose was on the lens most of the day.
If you've never used a Moose, you will be astounded at how it can turn rather ordinary scenes into extraordinary. In environments like the Southwest, where pollution is minimal, the effect is to intensify edge sharpness. Texture, landscape tone, and general details will "pop" if the light is right for a polarizer. Just understand that, by blending an 81A with a polarizer, it will "warm" snow -- so be prepared to cool that down in digital postprocessing.
I just got a new 18-200mm Nikon VR lens, and debated whether I should get a new 72mm for it, or a cheaper adapter for my 77mm. I decided that to use the lens shade, I'd buy another Moose.
If you've been persuaded to buy one, leave me a comment after your first shoot -- and tell me how happy you are!
*Consider that, when you keep a skylight filter on your lens to "protect" it. It may "protect" you from getting getting the best deep-shadow detail your lens can deliver. And if your lens gets hit from the front, the filter shards will wipe out your lens, anyway...so use a lens shade to "protect" your lens from fingers and dirt.

Collaboration between respected wildlife photographer and conservationist B. Moose Peterson of Wildlife Research Photography and THK Photo Products, Inc., has created a circular polarizing filter that uses 81A optical glass made by Hoya, the worlds largest optical glass manufacturer, instead of the clear optical glass of a normal circular polarizer. When using a camera with a split beam metering system (a metering system that employs a polarized half mirror) which is most of today's auto focus camera bodies, traditional linear polarizers will cause exposure errors do to their light absorption properties. Hoya SUPER HMC Haze UV(0) - Filter - UV - 55 mm
Average Reviews:

The Super HMC UV filter is distinguished by the optical coating on both sides of the glass. This is a high quality filter and worthly of high end lenses. I have them on both an 80-200mm f/2.8 and a 17-55mm f/2.8 Nikon lenses. No demonstrable reduction to the image quality is visible on images taken with either lens. In my sports photography work, I am typically right on the court very close to the action and having the glass of a $1,000 lens exposed is too much of a gamble for me. The only downside of this lens is that it's a bit difficult to clean as streaks seem to stick to it if the lens cleaning cloth (microfiber)isn't wet enough with cleaning fluid. However, I've found that if I flip the cloth to a dry spot right and swirl from the center outward to the edge, away go the streaks. The price ($39) through the Amazon affiliated dealers is excellent.

about $20 cheaper than the plastic lense hood canon sells. what's best is that since it's rubber, it collapses to a thinner size and can slip into a pocket or pouch. too bad it cost $8 for S&H.

Lens hoods guard against uncontrolled, stray light and unwanted reflections which result in reduced contrast and possible "ghost Images". In general, the use of a lens hood is recommended because better contrast improves the appearance of the photograph. This accessory also offers protection for the front lens element against rain and mechanical damage.Rubber Lens Hood are made out of a high quality matte black rubber. It folds down and protects against contrast - reducing, uncontrolled, stray light.

Using a DSLR? This filter is great for IR on a budget.
Used with a Nikon D70 and 50mm 1:1.8D.
I'm still getting a feel for this filter. So far I've had a hard time capturing the sharpness seen in the example photo. I've been surprised at how little light is needed to take a shot with f/1.8 aperture (shutter speed between 1/10s and 1/20s). Worth the money and quality build.
*edit* Most digital cameras have an internal IR blocking filter that works against IR pass filters like this item. For sharp pictures with a DSLR a tripod is highly recommended. This filter will work best on a film camera.
If you're looking for a good IR filter for a DSLR you may want to consider purchasing a second camera and having the internal IR-cut filter removed for use with this external IR-pass filter. Ideally, there are companies out there that can install an internal IR-pass filter (~$300) that will allow for infrared pictures and allow for using the cameras view finder. This would require that the camera be dedicated to IR only however.

What photographer wouldnt love to leave the beaten path and create pictures that stand outfascinateperhaps even take ones breath away? To show objects or landscapes as no eye would see them in nature is an irresistible challenge. B+W Infrared Filters can help you to take on this challenge and master it with perfection.B+W filters that transmit infrared lightbut which block or severely limit the visible spectrum can reveal otherwise hidden worldswhen used in conjunction with appropriately sensitized films.Infrared photographs are attractive in many ways: Because of the nearly white reproduction of the chlorophyll green of vegetationinfrared black-and-white photographs render landscapes as if they were self illuminatingor immersed in an extraterrestrial light (the moonlight effect).Infrared color photographs have a fairy-tale effect because colors are reversed. The film renders highly infrared reflecting plants in orange to purple-red toneswhile filters suppress the blue and green components that are also present. In any casethe pictorial results are difficult to predicttherefore they are always good for experimentation & surprises. The B+W Infrared 093 Filter blocks the entire visible spectrumso to our eyes it looks completely opaque.Unlike the 092 infrared filterit makes pure infrared photographs possible without the visible red component. Its transmission only begins to exceed 1% at 800 nmrising to 88 % at 900 nmand remains that high far beyond the upper limit of sensitization covered by infrared films. In the scientific fieldmaterials research and forensicsthe limitation to a strictly infrared range is often important. The filter factor is very dependent on the illumination and on the characteristics of the film.(Photograph by Jevgenij Nikiforov)

I'm not going to get into why one would want this specific type of filter - there are books on the subject that will go into a lot more detail - here is one example - there are many: The Photographer's Guide to Filters (Photographers Guide).
What I will review is quality of this product. B+W filters are made in Germany. Germany is consistenly one of the best producers of high end glass and optics. I have been told the reason the quality of these filters is better than most is that they don't make them as separate units, but instead they build a cylinder of glass and cut each filter off of it. Consistent quality. Screw ring is hard metal, so it is very difficult to strip the threads. I have messed up the threads on cheaper brands by accident.
In my experience, buying filters falls into the category of you get what you pay for. Cheaper brands are out there, but if you want a very high quality filter, that is durable and consistent with what you want to achieve with it... you can't go wrong with B+W filters.
Be sure to choose the right size - for example, Nikon prints the size on the back of the lens cap.

Tiffen 77mm Photo Essentials Filter Kit Review

With these filters you pretty much get what you pay for. They have good solid construction, and offer great protection for the lens. Threaded in front and hold caps pretty well too, which is a plus. But, once you start becoming more demanding of quality and move into more "serious" direction, the shortcomings would become more and more evident and very hard to compromise on. My main issue with these is glare they produce in extreme lighting conditions (night photography or very bright light). Some vignetting (although not terrible) is also introduced. For these reasons I never stack them either.
I feel that for kit lenses and less expensive ones they do an excellent job hence the 5 star rating with price-benefit ratio in mind. However, if you're using professional glass or feel that photography is something that you will be sticking to for a while consider doing a bit of research before committing to these.
