Tamron Autofocus 70-300mm f/4-5.6 LD 1:2 Macro Lens for Konica Minolta SLR Cameras Review

Tamron Autofocus 70-300mm f/4-5.6 LD 1:2 Macro Lens for Konica Minolta SLR Cameras

I purchased Tamron AF 70-300mm LD lens for Canon over a month ago. The first roll of film was a bit of disappointing. I liked colors but some pictures lacked sharpness (fuzzy). After that I purchased introduction photography book published by Kodak and read it. Gained knowledge was invalueable. I used tripod and Kodak Gold 200 color print film. Pictures were developed on 5x7 photographs at York Photo Labs. All pictures of second roll turned out very nice and sharp (especially considering 200 film on 5x7 pictures). I even made picture of caterpillar in macro mode at 300 mm and f/8 and this turned out very nice as well. All pictures (including ones taken at focal length of 300 mm) turned out very nice. Ultra telephoto lens is demanding but wide-angle lens is forgiving. You have to consider it when you use telephoto lens. You need solid technique; otherwise, you might be disappointed if you take handheld pictures with lower shutter speeds. It is pretty hard to make sharp pictures even at 1/250 shutter speed and 200mm. Tripod works well though. The larger focal length the harder it gets. I would not feel comfortable with anything slower than 1/250s. Some people mentioned that f/8 gives better results. That is true pretty much for any lens. But at this aperture you need tripod when using ISO 100 films unless you are in sun. If you can't use tripod but you want to use this lens then you might use faster films (IS0 200 or ISO 400) to reduce camera shake. Build quality is good and great warranty gives you peace of mind. Customer service is quick too (don't worry my lens is not broken but I had some technical questions to Tamron). This lens is also sold as Nikon AF 70-300mm ED and users seem to enjoy it as well (even though they pay 100$ more). Focusing is kind of slow, especially in low-light conditions and at larger focal lengths (i.e. 300 mm). You can't blame lens for it because camera does focusing. At this low amount of light and narrow angle (7 degrees - camera gets not much lights through lens). It is not Tamron but nature of telephoto lens. This is why camera haunts in low-light conditions. Lens comes with lens hood (lens shade) so you don't have to buy one for this lens. Overall, I am very pleased with pictures and expect even better pictures on ISO 100 films and 4x6 prints. Use tripod as much as possible. Also cable release is recommended to reduce camera shake. Great lens for the money. Period.

This is the definitive lightweight, compact telephoto macro zoom with a maximum magnification ratio of 1: 2 at the 300mm setting - ideal for shooting subjects that are difficult to approach such as sporting and theatrical events. The lens also features special effects such as the capability to provide beautifully blurred backgrounds to highlight the main subject in portraiture, or "compression effects" that make the most of the telephoto lens. By switching to macro mode, subjects as close as 0.95m can be shot within the focal range of 180-300mm, for true macro photography. The optical system incorporates a LD (Low Dispersion) lens, resulting in clear sharp images free of chromatic aberration.Type of zooming is rotation.

Average Reviews:

I have owned and used this lens professionally for over a year now and after a minor focus issue that was resolved very quickly by Sigma's excellent service department I have to say this is the sharpest 24-70 lens I have used. I also have experience with the canon 24-70L lens which retails for just over a grand and the Sigma is sharper throughout the whole range(even at 2.8). The only negative thing I have to say about this lens is the noisy autofocus (Canon's USM is much quieter). But it is still reasonably fast to AF. This is definately the best lens for the money in this zoom range and is without a doubt the best optically. Canon's build quality and weather sealing are definately superior to the Sigma so if that is an issue, you may want to go with the Canon.

Heliopan 706711 67mm UV SH-PMC Filter Review

Heliopan 706711 67mm UV SH-PMC Filter

Heliopan makes great filters and the SH-PMC is the top of the line. If you are serious about photography and have spent hundreds or thousands on your equipment, why be cheap when it comes to a UV filter which everyone should have? This is the gold standard of UV filters and it is worth the extra money to have the best. I am very satisfied with this product.

The Heliopan 67mm UV SH-PMC Filter is not only an excellent filter for visually improving images made with either digital camera or shot on film, but it can always stay on the lens to protect the lens from fingerprints, dust, and moisture. It absorbs the short wave portion of the spectrum so in hazy conditions a better image of the scene is possible. Loss of sharpness from ultraviolet rays and the blue tones common in infinity scenes are eliminated. No exposure correction is needed.

This is a fine product. The threads matched my 50mm Nikkor lens with the Nikon NC filter attached. The Nikon 77mm lens cap fits snug on it. I haven't tried another filter on the outside ring threads yet but the threads appear to be good. I would buy this again!

B&W 65072474 52MM Infrared Black #093 Filter Review

BandW 65072474 52MM Infrared Black #093 Filter
Average Reviews:

Using a DSLR? This filter is great for IR on a budget.
Used with a Nikon D70 and 50mm 1:1.8D.
I'm still getting a feel for this filter. So far I've had a hard time capturing the sharpness seen in the example photo. I've been surprised at how little light is needed to take a shot with f/1.8 aperture (shutter speed between 1/10s and 1/20s). Worth the money and quality build.
*edit* Most digital cameras have an internal IR blocking filter that works against IR pass filters like this item. For sharp pictures with a DSLR a tripod is highly recommended. This filter will work best on a film camera.
If you're looking for a good IR filter for a DSLR you may want to consider purchasing a second camera and having the internal IR-cut filter removed for use with this external IR-pass filter. Ideally, there are companies out there that can install an internal IR-pass filter (~$300) that will allow for infrared pictures and allow for using the cameras view finder. This would require that the camera be dedicated to IR only however.

What photographer wouldnt love to leave the beaten path and create pictures that stand outfascinateperhaps even take ones breath away? To show objects or landscapes as no eye would see them in nature is an irresistible challenge. B+W Infrared Filters can help you to take on this challenge and master it with perfection.B+W filters that transmit infrared lightbut which block or severely limit the visible spectrum can reveal otherwise hidden worldswhen used in conjunction with appropriately sensitized films.Infrared photographs are attractive in many ways: Because of the nearly white reproduction of the chlorophyll green of vegetationinfrared black-and-white photographs render landscapes as if they were self illuminatingor immersed in an extraterrestrial light (the moonlight effect).Infrared color photographs have a fairy-tale effect because colors are reversed. The film renders highly infrared reflecting plants in orange to purple-red toneswhile filters suppress the blue and green components that are also present. In any casethe pictorial results are difficult to predicttherefore they are always good for experimentation & surprises. The B+W Infrared 093 Filter blocks the entire visible spectrumso to our eyes it looks completely opaque.Unlike the 092 infrared filterit makes pure infrared photographs possible without the visible red component. Its transmission only begins to exceed 1% at 800 nmrising to 88 % at 900 nmand remains that high far beyond the upper limit of sensitization covered by infrared films. In the scientific fieldmaterials research and forensicsthe limitation to a strictly infrared range is often important. The filter factor is very dependent on the illumination and on the characteristics of the film.(Photograph by Jevgenij Nikiforov)

As some folks have said it's an auto focus lens, but not for the lower end Nikon bodies. It doesn't have the auto focus motor built in so you need to focus yourself. It's still called an auto focus lens because it will auto focus with the correct camera body.
I have a D3000 and it's a compact body so it needs the lenses that have the motor built in. If you look at the back of the lens where it mounts to the camera you can see a silver keyed pin and this is what's driven by the cameras that have an auto focus motor. If you don't want to focus manually on these cameras, you'll need the one without the drive pin.
Even without auto focus built in the lens is easy to use and the pictures are clear. While you are buying, be sure to get a uv filter for it in 52mm. I had a spare because I bought two for my d3000 when I purchased it. Also, since you need to focus, make sure you adjust the view finder so your focus is correct. I had mine set incorrectly and when I though the picture looked good I was actually focused on something else.
Another thing, the zoom and focus are quite stiff when brand new and loosen up as you use it. I've got about 200 pictures on it and it's good. It feels good and solid. The Nikon one feels a little nicer but the price for the Quantaray is good.
My next purchase will probably be a 18-200 that they make so I don't have to switch out from the 18-55 and 55-200 on the fly.

I don't even know where to start. This lens produces sharp pictures and great color and contrast. This lens is perfect for low light and/or action/sport photography (as this lens is famous for being one of the fastest lens together with its brother 50mm f/1.8). This lens is also perfect for portrait and other general purposes (macro etc). This is definitely a very versatile lens.
However, I think you should really consider buying the f/1.8 first before thinking to buy this f/1.4 lens (mainly because it is more than twice the price of the f1/8 and most of the time the f/1.8 version is fast enough in my opinion). Some examples where the faster f/1.4 lens might make a difference: low light wedding/concert or indoor sports photography (where the light is often low from the camera perspective) such as hockey, track and field, skating, gymnastic, basketball etc.
As much as I want to encourage everyone to buy this lens right away, let me mention some of the limitation that you would see (which I think will be helpful to go over before deciding to buy this lens):
First, being a prime lens, you will need to move your feet a lot to compose your picture. If you are used to zoom lens, don't underestimate this limitation. It takes me a while to get used to it, and sometime I still find people looking at me wondering why I am moving forward and backwards. the good news is that most of the time, they don't think I'm weird, but they are actually wondering if I'm a professional photographer.
Secondly, the focal range of 50mm, which is considered the normal lens and great for portrait lens. but on many DSLRs which is not full frame (unless you have a full frame Nikon DSLR like the D700 or D3, then 50mm is 50mm), this lens become a 75mm equivalent which is in the border of a short tele lens. I actually like the 75mm equivalent though I often have to move backwards when taking picture of a group of people.
Sharpness increases as you stop down to f/2. I actually prefer to use the widest most of the time and the results are still nice. Personally (when shooting low light action/sport), I'd rather use f/1.4 aperture settings than stopped down (e.g to f/2.8) and compensate with higher ISO setting which often gives me grainy picture. But if your object is not moving (static) then it is better to stop down to f/2 or more.
If you are wondering whether you should get a fast lens or a lens with VR (Vibration Reduction), here's my take: In overall, VR does help a lot (as it will reduce camera shake) and will produce better/sharper picture than equivalent lens without VR (especially if the object is static). If the object is moving (sports/action) then VR feature alone might not help (depending on how fast the object is moving and how much light is available), and a fast lens often end up being a far better solution, even without VR feature as it will allow much faster shutter speed to freeze motion. Using tripod (and a remote) will substitute for the need of VR feature. In general I would recommend getting a fast lens with VR feature (and usually it is expensive) such as the 70-200 f/2.8 VR, but if one can only get for one or the other, then find out what do you want to use the lens for and then use the guideline mentioned here.
If you are wondering whether you will get the benefit of buying f/1.4 lens over a f/1.8 lens, just remember that the f/1.4 lens is about 60% faster than f/1.8 at its widest aperture setting. With this information, you can decide if the additional speed will justify the additional cost. The bokeh is nicer as well in f/1.4 lens but I think speed is usually the main factor in deciding whether to get the more expensive f/1.4 lens.
Here are the summary of pros and cons for this Nikon 50mm f/1.4D AF lens:
Pros:
1. Very fast (f/1.4)
2. Very sharp pictures (especially when stopped down to f/2 or more. very sharp at f/2.8)
3. Great for sport/action photography
4. Great for indoor and low light situation
5. Great for portrait
6. Bokeh is almost as good as many expensive Nikon tele-lens
7. Fast autofocus
8. Perfect for wedding photography (or no-flash event). However, or try the 17-35mm f/2.8 or 28-70mm f/2.8 lens)
9. 75mm equivalent which can be considered a short tele lens (I actually like the fact that it's 75mm equivalent vs 50mm in DSLR. if you need more zoom, you can get the Nikon 85mm f/1.8, or the 70-200mm f/2.8 VR). If you have full frame DSLR(like the D3 or D700), then this #9 pros is not applicable.
10. Sharper than its 50mm f/1.8 sibling (at equivalent aperture)
Cons:
1. Being prime lens, you need to move your feet a lot to adjust/compose
2. Some distortion at widest aperture
3. Plasticy build (though it has metal moount and internal part seems to be from metal)
4. Autofocus is not the most silent but very reasonable
5. 75mm equivalent with 1.5x multiplier on non full frame DSLR (many people find this is an odd range for normal lens. I actually like it). If you have full frame DSLR(like the D3 or D700), then this #5 cons is not applicable.
6. Autofocus does not work with D40, D40x and D60. The newer 50mm f/1.4G AF-S lens will autofocus with those cameras.
Bottom line: This lens is so versatile that I think everyone should own (either the 50mm f/1.4 or the 50mm f/1.8) in addition to all the lenses that they already have. Being a very fast lens, it enables me to take pictures in low light (sport/action photography) that I otherwise wouldn't be able to do.
Again, I would recommend everyone to get this lens (or the 50mm f/1.8). In some ways I can say that this lens will make you a better photographer.
Happy Photographing!
Sidarta Tanu

Too often buyers are unaware that any 3X telephoto will have a "blacked-out" circle when drawing in the lens from full extension....i.e.: it's a specialty lens intended for telephoto; not for ranges between the basic lens range & the telephoto. Given those limitations, the TOKINA is a better-than-average lens and probably one of the most-lens-for-the-money additions you can find. TOKINA optics receive consistently high marks from professional reviewers and my experience (3 lenses) bears that out.

As a photography student I fell in love with this lens the moment that I got it. It has a good zoom without being heavy and doesn't make me feel like a tabloid reporter. The range is perfect for day to day use because it allows you to get close as well as shoot from clear across the street. 28 is a decent wide angle and the 300 is fabulous. A purchase that I would make again. The greatest part about this is that you aren't forced to change your lens over and over to capture different kinds of shots. You can leave the standard lens at home. The camera of fashion photographers, Nikon delivers on quality as always. The lens also adapts to all Nikon models. A good buy if not one of the best that I have ever made for my camera. Of course they already said all of this in the other blurb, but I just had to back them up on what they said earlier.

I had been salivating for this lens since re-entering photography, but the price always prevented me from pulling the trigger on one of these beauties. So fate, in the form of my lovely wife, intervened and purchased it for me. Now, that's love!!
It is without a doubt the most amazing lens that I've ever used. Bar none!! Forget the fact that it's a manual focus and give it a whirl. I guarantee that you'll never want to put it down. I haven't: it's been on my d-700 since Christmas and is likely to remain there until our savings bounce back and is replaced by it's big brother, the 100mm.
Once you get used to it, you can use it for everything from portrait to macro photography. Yeah, it's a 21mm wide angle lens that does it all!!
Got to love Zeiss - they make the best glass in the industry!!

The ZEISS ZF.2 with F bayonet for digital SLRs. Thanks to its electronic interface (CPU), these new ZEISS lenses support all-important operations such as the automatic exposure for shutter priority, aperture priority and program modes. The CPU also supports manual exposure settings, including those for camera casings that are not AI-compatible. Since the lens now transmits the EXIF data such as manufacturer, date, metering system and exposure settings, photographers no longer need to set the parameters manually. These quicker and faster handling capabilities of the ZF.2 lenses are especially useful under hectic shooting conditions.ZEISS lenses truly come into their own in situations that demand extreme photographic creativity and maximum image quality. Carl Zeiss' fixed focal length lenses are known for their high light sensitivity and precise manual handling, leaving the photographer in full control. The new ZF.2 series will be especially interesting for photo enthusiasts who value creative, high-quality images combined with the comfort of automatic settings.

If you have a coolpix camera and have not yet purchased this filter kit, I highly recommend that you do so. I have the coolpix 4300 and in order to use the filters, I had to purchase the UR-E4 adapter. If your camera needs an adapter to use these filters, then you will also need to get another lens cap to fit over them. If you go to nikonmall.com you can purchase the 28mm lens cap to fit, I think the model ID is LC-E900 (costs $2.50 + shipping), or something like that. But for the price, this is a must have, because I don't know about you, but i would rather need to replace an inexpensive filter than replace my entire camera. I leave the UV filter on at all times for a lens protector. I have taken many pictures with and without the filters, and I am hooked on these.

Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF Zoom Nikkor Lens is a very good quality lens. It's fast (fixed f/2.8), solid (built like a tank), produce great quality image, and priced very reasonably for a professional grade telephoto lens.
Having said that, there are some additional features that would be nice to have for this lens such as image stabilization, more silent autofocus (AF-S), and shorter minimum focus distance but those features will make this lens a lot more expensive (as those feature is included in the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 AF-S VR lens). If budget is not an issue, then I would recommend the 70-200mm f/2.8 AF-S VR (the Vibration Reduction technology and faster and more silent focus are very useful) or the 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-S (which has faster and more silent focus). If large aperture (fast lens)is not your main requirement, then you can get the 70-300mm VR (at a lower price)
There are several version of 80-200mm f/2.8 lens, and the latest one (non AF-S model and that Nikon still produce as of 2009) is the two ring model. The one ring push pull model is also good quality lens (solidly built and produce great image quality) but autofocus is much slower. If budget is an issue, the older push pull model would still be a good choice too.
FYI: This lens will not autofocus with Nikon D40, D40x, D60 or D5000.
Pros
1. Great quality lens (very sharp pictures. 3 of the glasses made/coated with ED technology)
2. Very fast (fixed f/2.8 throughout the zoom range)
3. Very reasonably priced (compared to 70-200mm f/2.8 AF-S VR and 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-S)
4. Built to last. Very solid
5. Great for sport, action, wedding and low-light photography
6. Uses standard 77mm lens filter
7. Bokeh is very nice at f/2.8
8. Autofocus much faster than the older 80-200mm f/2.8 model (the push pull version)
9. The price is very stable (I bought mine several years ago and I could still sell it at the same price today)
10. With non full frame Nikon DSLR, the focal length becomes 120-300mm equivalent (nice reach). you can get Nikon 80-400mm for more reach but that lens is not fixed f/2.8).
Cons
1. Heavy at 2 lbs 14 oz or 1.3kg. (Good arm exercise :), or using tripod or monopod would be nice)
2. Autofocus not as fast and silence as the AF-S model (70-200mm f/2.8 AF-S and 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-S), but the autofocus limiter switch improves autofocus time
3. Tripod collar is too close to the zoom ring (you can remove or adjust the tripod collar though)
4. Thread for the filter can be better (it's made of plastic)
5. Lens hood is sold separately (highly recommended to reduce flare and internal reflection)
6. More expensive than Non-Nikon (sigma, tamron etc) brand alternative (some comparable price but they have faster and silence focus)
7. Lens could jump around a bit during autofocusing if you are not strong enough (due to the glass moving fast as the lens autofocus)
8. No Manual focus override mode on Autofocus mode
9. No Macro mode (can't be use for macro shot). closest focusing distance is quite far
10. No VR (Vibration Reduction), which will help a lot for this type of lens (heavy and telephoto)
In conculsion, if you are looking for a Nikon professional grade telephoto lens that is reasonably prices, you can't really beat this Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF Zoom Nikkor lens. This lens is really good choice for sport, action, wedding, low-light, indoor photography.
Happy Photographing!

Nikon HB-38 Lens Hood Replacement - 4129 Review

Nikon HB-38 Lens Hood Replacement - 4129

Ya can use your hand to block the sun, but then ya only have one to shoot with. Also, I dont use UV protectors, so lens protection is a valuable purpose of a hood. My only complaint is that everything for this hobby is so expensive. My other complaint is that it can be inconvenient to carry and take on and off. Perhaps a semi rigid hood that flips out for use and flips back for carry so ya never have to take it off and risk having it roll down the street or lost - I dunno.

Nikon UR-E17 Converter Adapter (25662) Review

Nikon UR-E17 Converter Adapter (25662)

This is a high quality adapter that works flawlessly with the TC-E17 Teleconver - The main problem is finding a TC-E17ED anywhere. They are no longer made and getting more and more expensive to buy on sites like Amazon or eBay. Most are selling for more now than when they were new (over $500). If you can find the lens, it is AWESOME - and obviously, if you can find the lens, it won't do you any good without the UR-E17 Converter
