Purchased these two filters for a 24-105mm Canon EF 'L' and a 10-22 mm Canon EF-S, both of which render excellent images. Less expensive filters are readily available, but do you really want them on these lenses? I do not, as image quality means too much to sacifice for somethimg as minute as the cost of a good filter. Thus far, these have done their respective jobs well; a later trip to the South Pacific will tell the eventual tale.

Kit includes: 1) Hoya 77mm PRO1 Digital UV Filter; 2) Hoya 77mm PRO1 Digital Circular PL Polarizer Filter; >>> Both filters include: Hoya USA Warranty. >>> The Hoya Pro 1 Digital Series Ultraviolet UV Filter is a multi-purpose, fine-weather filter that is designed to optimize the photography experience of the digital SLR user. UV filters, which absorb ultraviolet rays that often make outdoor photographs hazy and indistinct, should be constantly fitted to a lens to provide improved clarity and color balance, as well as to provide protection to your lens. >>> The Hoya Pro 1 Digital Series Circular Polarizing (PL) Filter allows you to remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water and glass, and they also improve color saturation, clarity and contrast. This threaded filter is often used to increase the contrast and saturation in blue skies and white clouds, for example. Hoya's polarizing filters do not affect the overall color balance of a shot, and they will provide protection for your lens while shooting. A polarizer is different than most filters in that it is composed of two pieces of glass, mounted independently inside a round frame so that one can be rotated relative to the other. As it is rotated, it increasingly cuts out glare and haze. With an SLR, you can actually observe this change through the viewfinder. Polarizers reduce glare from water, glass, or any non-metallic surface. You can also use a polarizer filter to darken blue skies. Polarizers come in two versions, linear and circular, and autofocus cameras will perform best with a circular polarizer. >>> Hoya Pro1 filters are optimized for use with digital SLR cameras, but they are also perfect for traditional 35mm SLR applications, including black and white photography.

Hoya 77mm Extra Thin Circular Polarizer Super Multi Coated Glass Filter Review

If you're planning to use this polarizer with a hood on, especially a deeper one, this is probably not a filter for you. For whatever reason Hoya only serrated the outer edge, and the front part is absolutely smooth. You won't be able to turn it unless you can somehow squeeze your finger between the hood and the filter edge.
For a few dollars more you can get B&W multi-coated filter like this, whose maker put a little bit more thought in the design. B&W also seems generally better built.
The coating on my copy of this Hoya doesn't actually reach the very edge of the glass on one side, and when I look closely I can see a gap in coating where the metal ring meets the glass. The gap is tiny and it doesn't actually matter in the photos, but it does leave a bad impression.
Optically I haven't noticed anything obviously wrong with it. It's still a multi-coated polarizer, so guess it's an okay value all-in-all.

Light rays which are reflected by any surface become polarised and polarising filters are used to select which light rays enter your camara lens. They allow you to remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water, glass etc. They also saturate colors and increase contrast. Polarizers come in two variations but have the same effect. Linear polarizers work with older camera meters; Circurlar polarizers are designed for today's newer split-beam metering systems used in auto focus cameras. Check your camera's manual Extra thin filters are narrow construction with ultra thin glass. They are designed to avoid vignetting with today's larger wide angle lenses.

Opteka 77mm Screw-in Collapsible Rubber Lens Hood / Shade Review

Opteka 77mm Screw-in Collapsible Rubber Lens Hood / Shade

I really like this lens hood, it collapses down and fits easily in my backpacks. I dont even carry most of my large & rigid lens hoods anymore as this works on most of my lenses. I bought this primarily for shooting in aquariums and through glass to keep reflections down to a minimum which this hood is perfect for. I also like that it screws in like a filter so it works on all my 77mm lenses. I have 5 Canon lenses that all have different lens hoods and they dont fit on the other 77mm lenses (like my 70-200mm lens hood will not fit on my 100-400 or my 24-70, etc..) I did notice that I could see the hood when I was shooting at 24mm on my full frame 5D Mk II but once I zoomed out to 30mm, it was out of the frame. I just folded the rubber back when shooting at 24mm and that alleviated this problem.
This lens hood is simple, practical and works great.
Cheers, Carlton

Tiffen 77mm Photo Essentials Filter Kit Review

Tiffen 77mm Photo Essentials Filter Kit
Average Reviews:

With these filters you pretty much get what you pay for. They have good solid construction, and offer great protection for the lens. Threaded in front and hold caps pretty well too, which is a plus. But, once you start becoming more demanding of quality and move into more "serious" direction, the shortcomings would become more and more evident and very hard to compromise on. My main issue with these is glare they produce in extreme lighting conditions (night photography or very bright light). Some vignetting (although not terrible) is also introduced. For these reasons I never stack them either.
I feel that for kit lenses and less expensive ones they do an excellent job hence the 5 star rating with price-benefit ratio in mind. However, if you're using professional glass or feel that photography is something that you will be sticking to for a while consider doing a bit of research before committing to these.

In the world of CP filters, you get what you pay for (isn't that so with everything, really?). At $120, this is not the cheapest by far, but also not the most expensive. What I really wanted was a kaesemann CP (B&W or Heliopan) as I've had great experiences with borrowed ones before, but it was out of my price range. Wish I had sucked it up and bought the more expensive filter!! The Hoya PRO1 worked fine, but the DMC coating just can't seem to match the coatings that B&W or Heliopan use on their higher-end CPs (and nothing will resist all scratches - but try using a lenspen brush before a cleaning cloth to get rid of any possible grit that will scratch). Comparing identical shots taken on a tripod with and without the Hoya, there was some loss of image crispness (of course, what you gain with a CP can be a worthwhile tradeoff) that I never noticed before with the kaesemanns I've tried.
That said, for the price, I think this is a good filter. Mine was for a wide-angle lens (the Tokina 12-24), so a slim filter was necessary to prevent vignetting. The consequence of having a slim mount is ... it's SLIM! Other reviewers mentioned that it's hard to grip and thread. I don't have the most nimble of fingers, but I really didn't have a hard time. Just be aware that when you rotate the front lens, you need to take care not to rotate the WHOLE thing and unthread it. Other slim-mount CPs have the same issue - I'd rather have to take a leeeettle extra care than have to deal with fixing vignetting in photoshop. Don't use force to make it thread into the lens or a step-up ring - do it slowly and treat it as if you spent a hundred and twenty bucks on it. =)
Also, haven't seen anyone mention this, but be aware that if you are using a CP on a wide-angle lens, you will likely have an unevenly polarized sky (deeper blues in the middle or on one side but not the other). Nature of the beast.
If you can afford it, go for a kaesemann. Also, B&W and Heliopan use brass rings instead of aluminum (like the Hoya) and are less prone to thread stripping or binding, so those are good choices, too. And B&W CPs come with a push-on lens cap (don't know about Heliopan), which takes care of the my-lens-cap-no-longer-fits issue. But this filter is a good place to start, especially for a first CP!

Hoya DMC PRO1 Digital Filters are specifically designed and engineered for Digital SLR Cameras. Digital Multi Coated (DMC) construction greatly reduces lens flare and ghosting. The Black Almite Frame (BAF) is a black matte finish aluminum frame that reduces reflections to enhance contrast. In addition, the Black Rimmed Glass (BRG) reduces light reflection around the filter edge. Low Profile Frame (LPF) is an Ultra thin frame which helps avoid vignetting on wide-angle lenses. The Knurled Edge Frame (KEF) aids easy attachment and removal. UV filter absorbs invisible ultraviolet rays which make outoor photographs hazy and indistinct and serves as a permanent lens protector.

Average Reviews:

Excellent 77mm filter, easily (and firmly) holds a standard Nikon lens cap in the front threads. Quality is great, arrived new as stated, no blemishes or defects on the glass or on the ring. Precision threading works well when mounting onto the lense, no binding or early tightening. No discernable distortion was noticed when using a 17-35mm 2.8 on a FF Nikon body. Costs more than the slim version without front threads, but this small cost difference is better than constant reseating, or dropping and losing a loose fitting cap. May swap this filter back & forth on a few different lenses for a while (as I save up for the next one :-)
I'll update this review if things change, but the initial impression is very good.

The first slim filter with front thread for lens caps and filters the XS-PRO Digital Filter mounts are especially suited for SLRs with wide-angle and zoom lenses. The thin design prevents the mount from vignetting in wide shots. They also have a front thread for filters, lens caps and hoods. All XS-PRO Digital mounts are made of brass for long lasting quality and are matt black to prevent reflections. This is the very popular ultra violet-haze filter from B+W with 010 multi resitant coating protection to prevent flaring. Its a slim line ring so there is no vignetting on wide angle shots.Normaly people dont prefer slim filters because they cant hold lens caps but the xs pro filter special design has front threads so you can keep your filter on the lens at all times and use the original lens cap.

B + W 77mm Kaesemann Circular Polarizer Coated Glass Filter Review

B + W 77mm Kaesemann Circular Polarizer Coated Glass Filter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Couldn't agree with "Surfdog's" review more. There is simply nothing to touch it, and believe me, in 38 years of photography, I've tried 'em all!
It's actually difficult to describe in words just how different this Kaesemann style of PL filter is from a regular one (B+W's other versions included). Two people may differ on their idea of the true color of a banana..... it's that kind of situation. But in my humble opinion, it does what every other polarizer does, only a heck of a lot more accurately.
I've been using Kenko's SMC versions, plus a standard B+W coated model for some years now, and although both are certainly very well made, they do have a tendency toward a slight color distortion, the Kenko in particular leaning toward a slightly purplish sky. However, with the purchase of this Kaesemann quite a while back, I discovered just how beautiful blue skies really can be! Not your overly-saturated Postcard type-blue, but an indescribable colour that takes your breath away.
HELIOPAN (who use the world famous Schott glass) have an equally good Kaesemann Polarizer, but it's considerably dearer for what is essentially the same style item, and although both have brass rings, the one on the B+W version tends not to bind quite so easily.
Expensive maybe, but the B+W version is incomparable in my view. Worth every cent.
February 2008 Supplement :
One word of warning. Take it very carefully when cleaning this filter, especially if you're inclined to use cleaning fluid & tissue. It scratches and marks far more easily than any other PL-C I've ever come across, and half the time, you just seem to be moving that oily cleaning fluid blur from one place to another !
Tread lightly, and use the blower brush as much as possible!
Otherwise, it's proving to be every bit as good as I first elaborated.

If you struggle trying to "fix" your images' white balance after your digital capture, this item is your answer. Put it on over your lens, point it toward the dominant light source (such as that funky incandescent / fluorescent light mixture in most homes), take a photo, and set the Custom White Balance in your camera. That's it! I have captured photos using home/indoor lighting, stage lighting, etc. NO MORE TWEAKING WHITE BALANCE IN PHOTOSHOP! It's dead-on every time.
I take this with me wherever I know there will be mixed lighting and use it before I photograph. You will be impressed as I am.

The ExpoDisc white balance filter allows digital photographers to quickly and easily set an accurate custom white balance. Each ExpoDisc is individually assembled, calibrated and certified for neutrality in the visible spectrum, and for 18% light transmission. The ExpoDisc can be used on-the-fly to set a white balance in-camera when shooting JPEG, or later in post production when shooting RAW. Using an ExpoDisc to set a custom white balance results in consistently balanced color and eliminates many of the yellow, red and blue color casts commonly seen in digital photography. The ExpoDisc is easy to use. Setting a white balance with the ExpoDisc eliminates many of the inconsistencies and inconveniences associated with using white balance cards and targets, including unwieldy size, unwanted reflectivity, improper angling, and shadows. To set a white balance with an ExpoDisc, simply take a photograph of the light source (incident light) through the ExpoDisc, then follow your camera's instructions to set the camera's custom white balance.Because the ExpoDisc is calibrated for an 18% light transmission, you can also use it as a reference tool for manually determining proper exposure. The ExpoDisc is available in a variety of sizes to fit most popular lenses. The ExpoDisc does not thread into the lens; instead, its quick mount design can be pushed-on and popped-off to facilitate a quick white balance.

B+W 77mm Circular Polarizer MRC Filter Review

B+W 77mm Circular Polarizer MRC Filter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ever wondered how some pictures get that really dark blue sky in them? It's really as easy screwing on a MRC Polarizer filter, and while you're at it you might as well use the B+W.
Polarizer filters increase the saturation as seen by the camera which helps to make the deep colors you see in photo books. Additionally, a Polarizer filter will remove haze from outdoor shots making them sharper AND will cut reflection from water, windows, and foliage - something you can't do yourself afterwards with Photoshop.
Keep in mind that using a filter like this will decrease your light by two stops and that you have to rotate the filter every time you move to ensure you're getting the right effect. Also, you have to use a filter like this only under the right conditions. Most of the time you won't need it but when you do it will make your picture A LOT better.
Since you're attaching a filter to the end of your lens you're introducing the possibility of degrading the final image. While you can use a B+W (or a Heliopan) filter with any lens BEWARE of using the cheap filters you find at your local camera store. If you're taking pictures that are important to you it is absolutely worth the extra money to get a good filter for your lens.

B+W 77mm UVA (Ultra Violet) Haze MRC Filter #010 Review

B+W 77mm UVA (Ultra Violet) Haze MRC Filter #010
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I felt I had to write these comments after reading all of the other reviews on this company's filters. Having been a working photographer for more years than I care to remember, my main reason for settling on B+W filters was/is their optical correction capabilities, as well as the "obvious to the touch" construction quality.
The brass rings never bind (often a problem with aluminium rings), so you'll never find yourself struggling & cursing while trying to remove it! Smooth as silk.
The primary function of any UV filter is to counteract the presence of haze, something mostly noticeable over long distance. Therefore, the only true benefit comes when shooting scenic panoramas with wide lenses, or the exact opposite; long telephoto work. In fact, telephoto/long zoom lenses are the ones that seem to benefit the most, be it with either film or digital. Don't get suckered into this "Designed for Digital" sales-pitch either. Some of my filters are years old, and function perfectly well on newer digital cameras. Even B+W themselves are guilty of this by having the nerve to place the very same type of filter in a silver ( brushed aluminium?) ring in lieu of the usual black one, stick the word DIGITAL on it, AND charge extra for it! Cheeky!
Many people I've met over the years have made the mistake of buying cheap, almost useless filters for high quality lenses, and for all the good they do, they might as well be shooting through a window pane! If you're going to buy a high quality optic, then do your research on filters, too. They are an absolutely essential part of the optical train. Among photographers, it's always been a bone of contention!
I personally haven't come across any other filters (apart from Heliopan: they use "Schott" glass; some of the finest in the world) that can cut through murky haze quite as effectively as B+W's. I'm no optical engineer, so I have no idea how the company has gone about it, I only know that it works extremely well. Crisp, well-defined images in situations where lesser lights may likely have failed.
In what is now going to seem like a contradiction, not all B+W filters are capable of this high level of correction. You'll notice that they often come in two, and sometimes three different labelings at vastly different prices, (something that some unscrupulous dealers have been known to take advantage of!) so watch what you're buying.
If it's going to be just a protection filter (no real advantage in B+W here), or used primarily for Macro work, then the plain or Single-coated ones will suffice. However, if your intention is to do landscapes, or a lot of Tele work, then the Multi-coated version is essential. Just look for the "#010 UV-Haze MRC (2C)" on the inner front of the ring.

You may have also noticed that B+W manufacture slim-mount filters (more costly) especially for wide-angle lenses. A point worth noting is that this particular type of filter has a wider-than-usual front, so comes supplied with its own slip-on Schneider lens cap (in this case, 95mm, on a 77mm filter), meaning that you cannot use the original one supplied with the lens. The only real drawback is the rather fiddly fitting of the filter if you're using a lens hood (advisable) as it must be attached AFTER fitting the hood. Not easy, I can tell you!

The standard models do very slightly vignette at the 16mm setting on my full frame digital body, so the wide-angle version (not the above-mentioned model) are the way to go if that is your set-up.

The Heliopan versions do have a slimmer ring admittedly, but for some strange reason, although their rings are also brass, they often tend to bind. Odd?

One note here for anyone with a large aperture, drop-in filter type lens.... B+W MRC filters in both 48mm & 52mm will slip in perfectly, unlike some others. The difference to the eye may be purely a figment of my imagination, but I still feel it is noticeable!
If you're also in the market for a Circular Polarizer, and you don't mind spending twice the usual price, then look no further than B+W's Kaesemann MRC model. It knocks the socks off anything out there by a mile!
(See my review on the 77mm version)
B+W (and Heliopan) are untouchable, and their graduated ND filters are also truly something else!

I've been doing photography for years as a hobby - I've got all the fancy stuff and filters for everything. Problem is - filters are EXPENSIVE - especially the good ones, so I looked into these.
I've heard about step-up rings before but avoided them because they were always kind of pricey - you need one for each size lens. Fortunately this set packs everything from 49 - 77mm, so you can make it just the size you need it (stacking the rings together) and at such a cheap price. Build quality is good, but stacked together it does become kind of bulky (so if space is at a minimum in your bag, these might be a bit much. Fortunately you can always just bring whatever sizes you need - it'll still be less than if you were to bring filters for each lens!
If you buy these, buy the largest size filter you need - usually 77mm - then just use the step up rings to make it the size you need it. Using this method I was able to bring just 1 polarizer and use it on a 18-55 lens, a 70-200, and a variety of primes (30, 50, 85), all of which use different filter sizes. Wish I had bought this earlier!
