(More customer reviews)I know there are so many light balancing tools out there that it seems that you can't go to a camera show without seeing one per aisle. But I really fell for this when I saw it at WPPI. Basically it is an incident meter. Hold it at subject position so it reflects to the camera the light falling on the subject. Shoot a target shot and capture it. The key over expodisc is that it measures the light on the subject NOT the light on the camera position. Also it is the only one that can give accurate readings in mixed light. I own it and shot with it. I also have seen Hanson Fong use it and really respect Hanson's chioces.

SETUP: Took a gray frame under incident light source per ExpoDisc instruction, using camera Canon EOS 40D, 28-135mm lens.
IMPORT to Canon software "Digital Photo Professional" FOR WHITE BALANCE: Use this gray frame to do white balance itself. A result of a final Gray Frame.
IMPORT this final gray frame to Photoshop FOR MEASUREMENT: Using Photoshop Color Sampler Tool.
Result finding in 256 color scale (0 - 255):
Green & Blue = Mostly about equal.
Red = Always about 10 (in 256) value higher than the other two.
Example:
Green = 112
Blue = 114
Red = 124
I repeated this type of test several more times, result are still much off from scientific theory or way out of range (10 in a range of 256 or 4% error from neutral).
Supposely: Red = Green = Blue to call Neutral.
So this ExpoDisc is for convienent only. OK for none important picture. Way too high price for a non-precision piece.

(More customer reviews)This "target" comes with an instructional DVD containing good material to learn how to use it both indoors and outdoors. The target can be used to both set a correct white balance as well as to set your exposure correctly (in particular, manually).
Once you take your shots and you download them to your computer you can further adjust the white balance with tools like Photoshop by "eye dropping" the three colors (white, gray, black). This is especially true when shooting RAW. With other tools, you can "eye drop" the gray bar to get similar results.
This target is very useful when you shoot indoors, where you have more control over the lighting. However, you can end up having to use the target many times when you use it outdoors.

Digital Grey Kard Premium White Balance Card / Gray Card for Digital Photography Review

(More customer reviews)This card has three cards, white, black, and gray, so you can use it for RAW or for JPEG (see more below). The user's guide is helpful, but not super technical. The price is unbeatable for what you get. Shipping is fast. I used this card to shoot a friend's wedding and the results were fantastic! Basically this is a cheap and easy way to get perfect colors in your digital pix.
Before I got this white balance card, I got a whIbaL card, which was a lot more expensive. I was disappointed because it has only one card, and the user's guide on CD-Rom they show in the picture either is out of stock or never existed because they wouldn't send me one when I asked. My colors have been super accurate with the DIgital Grey Kard - I don't think it's worth spending more than twice as much to get the wHibAl card.
I shoot RAW files mostly, and in Photoshop or Photoshop Lightroom I use 1-click white balance in the RAW converter. During a photo shoot I simply shoot an image of the gray card under the same lighting conditions as my subject. Then in post-production (using Lightroom) I open the image of the Digital Grey Kard in the RAW converter. I use a 5 pixel white balance dropper to get a good sample of the color of the gray card. Then I select all of the images that were shot under those same lighting conditions, and click the 'sync' button, making sure I sync the white balance only. That's all I have to do to get perfect color. Fast, accurate, easy.
When shooting JPEG, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom will still allow me to do some white balance correction, essentially using the same steps as outlined above. But with JPEG, the image quality is degraded somewhat by the process, so RAW is a better way to go.
There is another way to get great white balance for JPEG using this card. The Digital Grey Kard is also perfect for setting in-camera white balance, which actually is the best way for JPEG photographers to get perfect colors without having to use Photoshop or Lightroom.
I use the white card and the black card sometimes to set levels in Photoshop. To set the white and black point in the Photoshop "levels' control, I shoot an image of all three cards, and open the image in Photoshop. I go to image->adjust_.levels an use the highlight dropper tool on the white card and the shadow dropper tool on the black card, finally I use the midtone dropper tool on the gray card. This technique is great for setting up a JPEG for maximum dynamic range - which allows you to take advantage of the full capabilities of the output printer or display device.

The Prodisk is one of the most useful tools in the kit bag, used as a reference point for color management and setting the correct white balance under difficult lighting situations where camera would be easily fooled. First you should set the exposure correctly using the grey card by placing it in the scene to be photographed. Adjust in Photoshop or similar with level's Secondly place the color checker card in the scene and adjust in Photoshop or similar by using the Grey, black and white squares in the images with the levels color balance tool to remove color casts. (More customer reviews)When I first got this card, I thought all my white balance problems were fixed. However, as I used it for a few months, it became clear that it is not a dummy-proof solution.
It is imperative that you get a shot of the card in exactly the same lighting conditions as the picture you want to adjust in post-processing. This can be a challenge if you're outside with your kids and you're poking in and out of buildings and the trees are casting deep shadows in an otherwise sunny day. You'd potentially have to get many card exposures for all the various light settings you encounter throughout the day. The immediate surroundings have a large effect, as well. Take the same sunny conditions, and pictures on a grass field will have a different tint than ones taken on parking lot or on a brick road.
I also noticed that chromatic noise skewed my post-processing attempts when I used my software's water-dropper tool. If I happened to pick a pixel that was actually a blurp of chromatic noise, then the WB got terribly skewed. So, I'd either have arbitrarily pick a pixel that looked grey to me or smooth the results with chromatic noise reduction. Best results are had with well-exposed, low-ISO pictures where the card shows up as a uniform, solid grey with as little noise as possible.
Though with the caveats above, I highly recommend this card. It's easy to carry and is a better WB solution than relying on in-camera settings or eyeballing it in post-processing (which works, too, if you can get the hang of it). Remember to constantly take shots of the card and using the lowest ISO and you should get accurate results in post-processing.

(More customer reviews)Or, more correctly, does exactly as shown on the video. I cannot recommend the manufacturers video highly enough. Having tested the product the lift it gives to my photos is worth every penny of the fairly substantial price.
I already have the equivalent Lastolite product which was only rarely used as it is not convenient to have available at all times. This one I slip into my shirt product and use whenever the lighting conditions alter.

(More customer reviews)I own a 30D and was spending too much time in photoshop correcting the white balance on ALL my photos! Even though this is my first SLR of any kind,I don't use any of the automatic modes. I'm learning how to use all the creative aspects of this camera. I didn't know anything about color temperature. The factory default was 5500K, so I left it there & used AWB & the daylight setting. I mostly shoot during the day or before sunrise. ALL of my photos had a bluish tint!......Out of frustration,I surfed the net for an answer & stumbled across the expodisc. I immediately ordered a 72mm filter to fit my 28-135mm. WOW! did it ever make a difference!! I now keep my white balance on the custom setting for ALL my pix!
I suggest you go to their website to read the full explanation,testimonials from pro photogs & also see some before & afters. Then come back to Amazon to buy because it's cheaper here. I would also suggest that you get the expodisc that fits your biggest lens. I wish I would've bought the 82mm instead because I plan on buying the 16-35mm ii in the future. Even the video that comes with it suggests that you buy the disc to fit your biggest lens. You just hold the expodisc against your lens & take a shot. It doesn't need to be attached. You can see a short video of it on you tube,which is where I first spotted it.
Before finding the expodisc I had looked into a color temperature meter. It's $1400 on Amazon!!!!! A good light meter is over $1000.00!!! I'd rather spend $100!!! The best thing about this tool is that it helped me to understand color temperature. My pix had a bluish tint because the color temperature was too low at 5500k for daylight. With the expodisc, that same picture had a color temperature of 6800k! The colors were stunning & I didn't have to do any post processing besides cropping or resizing! I shoot in Raw + Jpeg mode.
Maybe once I get more proficient with Photoshop,post processing won't be such a pain for me. But until then,whenever my camera comes out, my expodisc goes around my neck. If the light changes, I just take another custom reading with the expodisc! I will never be without it!!!
HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS TOOL!!!!!!!

Works great for indoor photos where I was usually getting very yellow photos with my Nikon D60. Now, nice natural colors.

(More customer reviews)These color cards are only a thin veneer of color on a white core. Don't even think of keeping loose in a pocket. My cards are already transfering colors between cards from slight rubbing together. The gray card has also picked up a brown tint (making it useless for white balance) by simply sitting next to my leather wallet--and try as I might, I cannot clean this tint--it is pemanently stained it seems.
White card has black splothes that won't come off, black card has white showingvthru from wear, gray card stained. Pretty sad--especially since I kept these iny pocket just once.

(More customer reviews)In addition to registering a very accurate white balance for each scene, this thing also can be used for setting the correct exposure. I was totally blown away by this little discovery and a great trick. This little thing allows you to turn your camera into a spot light meter and saves you $300!
1. Attach your Mennon WB lens cap (well, this is obvious).
2. Set your camera to manual focus and focus it to infinity.
3. Set your camera in aperture priority mode.
4. Come as close to your subject as possible, position your camera so that the lens cap plane is perpendicular to your subject AND lies in the same plane with the light source or direction of light - you'll figure it out. Make sure that you don't cast shadow on the cap with your body, and also that your cap is NOT facing the light source. Example: if you are taking a picture of a person, hold the camera so that your lens is directed upwards, and the cap is near the subject's chin.
5. Remember the shutter speed (if you are in aperture priority mode) that yields the best exposure.
6. Take WB reading.
7. Return to the position you will be shooting from. Frame your subject, and check the shutter speed reading. If it is different from the one you've just measured, switch to the manual mode, and dial in the correct shutter speed.
8. Take a shot.
9. Be amazed at how correctly your subject is exposed (your foreground and background may still have not very accurate exposure, but that's due to the difference in lighting, so reframe your shot and shoot again, if it happens).
10. I am now able to get the correct exposure in 99% of my shots. I can't rely on automatic exposure meter anymore since it almost always either underexposes or overexposes my images.
If lighting level is homogeneous at the scene (for example, in an overcast day), you can measure the exposure from any point, but it is rarely the case. Usually though if lighting is uniform, your automatic light meter is able to measure the exposure correctly, so you don't really need to use the cap. But this would happen under the assumption that your subject is 18% gray, so if it is not true - a very light or dark subject, then you should use the cap.

58mm Digital SLR White Balance Lens Cap Review

(More customer reviews)I have been taking pictures of my granddaughter playing basketball. In April and May, I did not have this white balance tool. Even though I tried using the in camera white balance selections (Tungsten or Fluorescent) my colors were off because of the lights. I bought this custom white balance tool before she started playing basketball in September. It has made a remarkable difference. The skin tones are much nicer, the colors inside the gym are more accurate. The price is affordable as compared to a "Expodisc". I am pleased with the results. The down side is: It comes with a plastic filter ring that the cap snaps onto. This plastic ring is very hard to thread onto the camera lens. I pitched that ring and just use it on my UV/Skylight filter when making the custom white balance adjustment.
