(More customer reviews)Great tripod to buy and to get it with you anywhere, when i get it out of the box, i thought that it's legs are made of plastic, and it will be very week tripod, but just as i put it on the ground with the legs fully opened, i found that it is very rigid more than i expected from a tripod with this price, i used it with Canon EOS 50D with Canon EF70-200 f4L, with the Canon Canon Speedlite 430EX over it, and it was still rigid, about it's hight it taller than my eye level when the extension tube is fully extended, so i think that it is great for people with a maximum hight of 185 cm, it's weight is great, why pay more than this, the only thing is i think it would be better if it have a ball head.

(More customer reviews)Being new to photography,I purchased the Velbon Carmagne 530 carbon fiber tripod with PH-250B magnesium head for my Canon A95 camera, based upon several other favorable reviews. I wanted a lightweight but durable tripod that was easy to use. This tripod has fulfilled all expectations with its superb quality and close tolerances--there isn't a sloppy component anywhere and it looks as if it were made for the space program. The matt-black finish is beautiful. The carbon fiber legs (the main sections have a black foam covering) extend smoothly and are secured easily with snap-locks. The locking mechanism that controls the splay of the legs works beautifully, allowing the tripod to be positioned for macro shots of ground-level subjects. The 3-way panhead is adjusted with a locking knob and two removable handles (one of which must be removed to store the tripod in the included carrying case--no big deal). The tripod should be able to support even SLRs with telephoto lenses. Fully collapsed, the tripod is roughly 26" long and is easily transported with the case's carrying strap. Although I may never use the "stone" bag (for weighting the tripod down) including it was a thoughtful touch. More expensive models extend to greater heights, but I preferred the fewer leg sections (three) of the model 530. If you think you'll be doing a lot of indoors and outdoor photography and value superb engineering and quality, consider this tripod. It is worth the price, but be prepared to spend over $200. Now having tried a carbon fiber-magnesium tripod, I would never go back to a run-of-the-mill metal one.

Cullmann 52501 Nanomax 250 Aluminum Tripod With 3 Way Head Review

(More customer reviews)I was looking around for an inexpensive, all-purpose tripod, and having a difficult time picking from among the many choices. A colleague recommended I look into Cullmann. It was a bit more than I wanted to spend for a "cheap" tripod, but I entertained the curiosity nonetheless.
Some research revealed that Cullmann makes nice stuff. It's not the generic, rebranded crap that you see in the $20-$50 range (Slik, Velbon, et cetera, et cetera).
So, having settled on the brand, I was leaning toward the 220 model, but its maximum deployed height isn't very tall, and I'm not fond of the head...so I went with the 250.
I've been using it for about three months now. I've shot video with it using a a Sony PD-150 (3.5 lbs), and have used it extensively with a Sony DSC-H20 for stills. It's forte is stills, to be sure, but it's more than serviceable for video, especially for places where you can't fit/carry/etc a larger tripod. The macro feature is a nice bonus, and it works well as a mono-pod for those situations when you need one.
All in all, highly recommended. The best tripod in this price bracket, in my opinion.

Dolica ST-400 63-Inch Lightweight Tripod Review

(More customer reviews)Based on positive Amazon reviews and a price that met my budget, I purchased one of these and was pleasantly surprised by the quality and features of this tripod. You may be able to find tripods which are lighter, more sturdy or sport a more famous brand, but I dare you to find one with this mix of features at this price point.
If you're a professional photographer, go look at Manfrotto or some of the other high end brands. If you're an amateur photographer looking for a good tripod that won't cut into your lens budget, then look no further. Its lightweight so you don't mind tossing it into your travel bag. It holds my old Nikon d70s with no problems and is sturdy. Comes with a balistic nylon bag.
Firstly, the legs adjust to 3 different angles, the most extreme of which allows the legs to go perpendicular to the center column. The ball head mechanism is very smooth and precise, allowing fine adjustments with ease. Due to the various angles the legs are capable of doing, Macro work would be nice on this tripod.
Its obviously not in in the league of those carbon fiber tripods, but for under $40 shipped, its a steal.

Manfrotto 7301YB M-Y Tripod with 3-Way Head - Replaces 728B Review

(More customer reviews)As a photographer, I'm what you'd call a "weekend warrior". Just a hobbyist that enjoys capturing images and sharing them with friends and family. I've been using a DSLR camera for the last couple of years, starting with a Canon 400D, then moving up to a Canon 40D. When I first got the 400D, I purchased an inexpensive, starter tripod that, for me, worked fine for the occasional low light or portrait shot. But after I upgraded to the 40D, I realized that I needed a higher quality tripod. The weight of the 40D compared to the 400D was quite significant and my cheap tripod was just too unstable. On numerous occasions, this resulted in blurry shots due to camera shake on shots with longer exposure times or on extreme macro shots where the slightest movement will ruin your photo.
After researching tripods I decided on getting a Manfrotto simply because of their reputation for quality and from recommendations from many other photographers, both professional and hobbyists like me. The cost of a Pro class Manfrotto was a bit too steep for me so after some research, I decided on getting the 7301YB. This tripod replaced Manfrotto's 728B model which got good reviews all around and the cost of the 7301YB fit into my budget perfectly.
SOME OF THE PROS I FOUND WITH THIS TRIPOD:
*Its light weight and compact design. When I travel, my camera gear always comes along with me so a tripod with this size and weight are perfect.
*Stability is head and shoulders above my old generic aluminum tripod. My usual setup is the 40D with the BG-E2n battery grip, and either a Sigma 17-70 2.8 lens or a Canon 70-300 IS USM lens. The combination of these is equal to about 4 lbs and with the tripod rated to safely hold up to 7.7 lbs, it's very solid and stable.
*The height of the tripod is perfect for me. It extends to maximum of 56.3 inches.
*Quick release plate is made of metal and has a much lower profile than my older tripod so it's not an inconvenience for me leaving it attached to the camera 24/7.
*The center column can be removed and inverted so instead of the head sitting on top of the tripod, it can be set up so it hangs down under the tripod, making it possible to get the camera even closer to the ground.
*The quality and construction is solid all around.
*Comes with a carrying bag.
SOME OF THE CONS I FOUND WITH THIS TRIPOD:
*The head is permanently affixed to the tripod so there is no upgrading to a higher quality, professional head in the future. If you want to upgrade, you'll have to buy a whole new setup, legs and head.
*There is no level built into the tripod.
*The forward and backward movement on the head could be a tad bit smoother.
I also tried the tripod with my Canon ZR80 compact DV camcorder with a 0.70x wide angle lens attached and it was equally stable.
Overall, I think I made a great choice and I'm glad I did my research beforehand. It's a great upgrade from the starter tripod I had to one that is more of a serious part of my photographic gear.

I bought item because I need something small with features of a large TP as well as a handle to center the subjects on the camera's LCD screen; especially for video, because small digital cameras can sometimes be difficult to keep still by hand. I use it for a tiny Coolpix S1 but it can easily handle something much bigger without a problem. Setting it up is very easy once you get familiar to all possible adjustments and knobs, and once you're done it's a snap to put away.

(More customer reviews)A nice little gadget, well worth the ~$25. Plenty sturdy enough for a Nikon d80 with 18-135 kit lens and anything lighter, which means I can use it with any of my cameras. Folds into a package the size and weight of a soda can, which makes it easy to take anywhere.
Only minor drawback I can see is the mount, which can't be (at least easily) equipped with a quick-release - this means I have to take the shoe for my full-size tripod off before I use this one.

My gig is kind of heavy, Canon 1DS MK3 with the 70-200mm F2.8L the heaviest lens that I currently have and it supports it without any issue. I also have the Arca-Swiss Z1, which is also considered to be the best and the combination is so good to use. It is not light nor heavy but if this is the one tripod that you must have for all purposes, then I can't think of any other tripod to buy. It is pricey, but if you want the best and keep with you for a long time, then just buy it and forget it.

Joby GP2-E1EN Gorillapod Flexible Tripod for Digital SLR Cameras Review

(More customer reviews)I have had my Gorillapod SLR for only a couple of days and have used it just once. I bought it for use with a Canon 300D with my 17-40mm lens. (Total weight on this setup is unofficially 2.6 lbs.--unfortunately appearing to be .1 lbs. over the maximum weight specified by Joby. But, for my purposes, I'm considering that close enough.) Given this weight, my heavier telephoto lens is out of the question. Of course, I knew that prior to my purchase.
Here are my initial thoughts/tips:
- Make sure you do not associate any of the regular Gorillapod's "demo" photos on Joby's website with the SLR version's--or at least pay close attention to the SLR "demo" photos. Specifically, around poles and trees, you will want the legs to wrap fully around the object. Anything less will lack the necessary strength/grip. This point is self-explanatory in the photos but I personally didn't examine them close enough and I did sort of mix "demo" photos in my mind when building my expectations. (Call me an idiot but I was slightly curious if the "Gorillapod-helmet" would work. It--perhaps obviously--will not. I don't think I'd even trust it with my Canon A610 digicam. :) But, I broke out a ski pole and the Gorillapod will definitely be secure on the thin pole. An aspen trunk? Maybe if it's a young tree. A swing set pole? Again, a thin one is likely to work.)
- The Gorillapod seems to have a "sweet spot"--in a traditional tripod stance--where it is just fine and seems perfect. Yet, a slight movement lower causes gravity to win the battle and pull the whole thing down in the middle. A movement in the opposite direction seems to make the Gorillapod unstable--too upright perhaps and ready to topple. If, in the future, Joby could implement some form of "parital leg lock," this issue could be solved.
- My next use of the Gorillapod will be for mountain summit photos and an accompanying hike this weekend. The Gorillapod's "feet" are pretty "sticky"--that is, they're basically like a no-slip Vibram sole. So, I think the Gorillapod will do just fine on 14ers/13ers and on lake rocks, boulder fields, etc.--especially in the traditional 3-leg tripod setup. Gorillapod competitors seem likely to struggle on uneven rocks so I'm feeling good about the Gorillapod in this use.
- I bought the Gorillapod because I thought it was the best option I have seen on the market for throwing in a Camelbak--be it for skiing, hiking, or biking. (My other tripod is a 7.2 lb. Gitzo. I've lugged it around on a hut trip and backpacking trip--sans a few leg sections to shave weight. The Gorillapod will suffice from now on, I believe.) When I took the Gorillapod out today for some shooting, I just put it on the camera and carried the camera with it on--the camera being on my shoulder. I walked to a park and didn't really even notice it. The Gorillapod really does weigh almost nothing.
- The Gorillapod makes a nice "monopod" when used with three legs straight down.
- My 22 month old son loves it. So, at worse, it's a great infant toy for improving motor skills.
- Don't worry about the Gorillapod's camera attachment. It's solid.
- I have a buddy with an Ultrapod. I bought the Gorillapod thinking I had way superior technology despite an over doubling of price. Turns out I probably have merely equivalent but cuter functionality. Also, that buddy has a Canon 10D. The Gorillapod only makes sense for Rebel users in Canon's digital SLR lineup--preferably users with the 18-55 kit lens.
In summary, I would call myself satisfied but not overjoyed. I think it is at least equivalent to the alternatives if not slightly better. But, it is not quite revolutionary. And, keep in mind, these are my first impressions following a single use of it. It didn't knock my socks off but I think I can make it work.
I give it a 4-star rating because I will also use it with my A610 digicam. It should be excellent with that camera when compared to the digicam Gorillapod. 3-stars is likely fitting for use with my SLR (given the sweet spot issue, 2.5 lb. limitation, and slightly elevated cost). But, 3-stars seems low. So, consider my rating a 3.5 and I'm rounding up.

Finally when planning for a flying, driving and cruise vacation I was looking for something light enough to carry and not take up much of my 50 pound airline weight limit. I looked for a small, lightweight tripod and found a really nice one, but it was designed for point-and-shoot cameras and would not hold my DSLR. I finally looked for the Gorillapod options and found this package to be the most versatile and suitable.
I carried the Gorillapod in my camera back-pack with little added weight. It was always very convenient when needed to either steady long exposure shots or hold the camera in the best position for pictures with my wife and me. It can be used as a straight mini-tripod or the legs can be wrapped around almost anything and grip very well. I wrapped it around our cruise ship cabin balcony rail, other railings and signs, on top of a chair that was on our cabin bed, set it on the car hood, trunk, trash can, and other places. The only real issue I had was I was forced to take shots from a very low angle or from non-optimum location when there was nothing to set or wrap it on where I wanted it, but those times turned out to be rare.
Switching from landscape to portrait mode was easy with the excellent SLIK ball head, though I had to turn the ball head to get the camera mount post into the 90 degree slot. It attached and detached from the camera very quickly by loosening the ball-head lock tension screw and spinning the ball head on and off the camera mount. Also if you have a relatively heavy zoom like my 18-200 Sigma you'll need to position a leg in front of the lens when used as a mini-tripod to keep it from tipping over. I was concerned about it falling but that didn't happen during my trip. The other accessories came in handy also as a travel cleaning kit. I'm very happy with this purchase.

(More customer reviews)I've been looking for a light, strong tripod to take out on hikes for nature photography. I had an older Gitzo that was the next level up (3-series?), but at nearly 5 pounds it was just too heavy. The 2531 is a light but feels very solid. I think the 3 leg section tripod is definitely the way to go for the 25XX series, as 4 sections I'm sure would not feel as stable. I used it with a 5DII and 300 2.8 lens this morning, and while stretching the specified limit on this model, it performed fine. The leg locks are much easier to use than my older model. Be careful with the tripod feet, as I lost a couple on my first outing as they are known to get loose easily. I think a accidentally loosened them while thinking I was working a leg lock, but Gitzo customer service sent replacment feet no questions asked.
Yes, its expensive, but I was happy to pay it for just the right tripod.

Looking for a replacement, I found this updated version: the Slik Mini Pro III (which is the same tripod but with an updated ball head). This little tripod is one of the most versatile pieces of camera equipment I own (besides my cameras).
For a tripod, it's compact size gives it a huge advantage. I never take my larger tripod on vacations, because it's much too bulky. On the other hand, I take my Slik Mini everywhere, as it's small enough to fit in my backpack, luggage, and even my jacket pocket. I've taken it to multiple continents on multiple trips, and it has never failed me. A very sturdy tripod, with expandable legs and a raisable center column, it's the best compromise I have found for stability, portability, convenience, and size in a tripod.
