(More customer reviews)I have found this flash bracket greatly improves the lighting of portrait photography in dark conditions. I think most portraits look best with the flash directly above the lens. But moving it off center can have interesting effects as well.
The unit is lightweight but sturdy. It doesn't feel like it going to fall apart at all. There is a release lever that allows the camera to switch from landscape (horizontal) to portrait (vertical) which operates very smoothly. There is also a telescoping system which allows you to raise the flash bracket from the minimum of 6 inches above the lens to 18 inches above the lens. When shooting in very low light, this can help hide the shadows from the flash behind your subject even more.
When deciding to buy this unit I was thrown with the shutter release being set towards the back of the camera. But after a handful of shots with my thumb, I quickly got the 'touch' to depress it halfway to activate the autofocus, metering, etc. If this doesn't appeal to you it can be switched to point forward so you can use your index finger. I will say that with your index finger on the shutter release lever, you loose some of the strength to hold the unit. My suggestion is to start with default position and then go from there. And if you would like to shoot left handed, this bracket is reversible so you should have no problems (though I did not try it personally)
Lastly, I like the fact that it is a complete set. The shutter release cord, iTTL cord, and the frame all come as one kit. Despite the packaging of the unit when it arrived, it does not come with a 'Storage Pouch'. (See photos for more details)
The only thing I don't like about this bracket, is there is not a good position to set your camera down when you need to. The best position I've found it to lean it up against a wall. If you can't lean it on something then you are foced to set it on it back, which fires the camera because its setting right on the shutter release lever. Or you can set it on the front or side which makes it lean on your lens.
All-in-all I think this is a great bracket and worth every penny. This bracket allow you to shoot much better photos in very low light, like at a party or wedding reception. It's quick to switch from landscape to portrait and back without changing the location of the flash. And lastly it's comfortable to use and very sturdy.
I can't give this 5 stars because of the simple fact that there is not a safe way to set your rig down. And since one person can't give 4.5 start I've given it 4 stars. Don't let that scare you tho. I think this is the best camera bracket on the market for around $100.
