Hoya SUPER HMC Haze UV(0) - Filter - UV - 55 mm Review

(More customer reviews)The Super HMC UV filter is distinguished by the optical coating on both sides of the glass. This is a high quality filter and worthly of high end lenses. I have them on both an 80-200mm f/2.8 and a 17-55mm f/2.8 Nikon lenses. No demonstrable reduction to the image quality is visible on images taken with either lens. In my sports photography work, I am typically right on the court very close to the action and having the glass of a $1,000 lens exposed is too much of a gamble for me. The only downside of this lens is that it's a bit difficult to clean as streaks seem to stick to it if the lens cleaning cloth (microfiber)isn't wet enough with cleaning fluid. However, I've found that if I flip the cloth to a dry spot right and swirl from the center outward to the edge, away go the streaks. The price ($39) through the Amazon affiliated dealers is excellent.

(More customer reviews)I recently bought this telephoto lens to use with my powershot A70. It works great at the last 2 zoom levels. At the first few zoom levels there is a little bit of picture corruption but that is a problem with all telephoto lens, not just this one. The only thing I didn't like about this lens is that the front accepts filters in 46mm. I wish it used either 52mm or 37mm. Anyways, that problem can be solved with a keep step up and step down rings. This lens does its job great. It comes with 2 lens caps, a cap for each side of it. It also comes with adapters to fit different cameras. Its default is 37mm but comes with adapters for 28, 30, 30.5mm.

Hence I am reviewing the one I got, which is not very well made (wobbles when mounted until you really tight it) and when cleaned with a cloth, it left black marks, so the finish is not great either. For the $4 paid it is not worth returning to (maybe) get the Bower one... So careful which vendor you purchase from, some seem to think it is fine to switch brands without telling you - then it is up to you to go through the trouble of replacing it.

I have received several comments on my review (Thanks, James!), have read several other reviews and have looked at the pictures posted by other users. Please be aware that the most recent pictures and the some of the most recent purchasers have NOT received the same product that is pictured. Please review the pictures that I have posted compared to several other users. If your results are significantly different than mine using a Canon EOS 18MM lens (or equivalent), then it is possible that you received a different product. If you received the same product, there should not be significant distortion in the picture or black rings around the edge when using the same lens at 18MM.

I purchased this lens attachment in lieu of purchasing a brand-name wide angle lens. I wasn't expecting much, since it was only $10. That said, I was pleasantly surprised by the results.
I tested this attachment with my Canon EOS XSi and an EF-S 18-55mm lens, fully closed to 18mm. I shot images with and without the wide angle attachment, and noted a clear difference between the width of the target area. I viewed the images side by side on my large monitor (32" LCD HDTV) and did not see a significant loss of image quality. There was slight loss of sharpness, but not much.
Using the macro attachment with the same lens, I noticed a clear difference in the minimum focal distance of the lens, but I did not notice any loss of picture quality. The close up image was very sharp when viewed on the computer screen.
In both cases, autofocus did not work properly, so I had to use manual focus to achieve the best pictures. When holding the shutter button down halfway, the green focus indicator within the view finder worked properly though, and helped me get the best focus.
There are clearly higher quality lenses that serve this purpose, but this lens (wide angle and macro) is definitely something I will carry in my bag until I can purchase those more expensive lenses. It is definitely worth the $10, if you need something now.

NOTE 2 (9/11/10): I've received a few questions about this lens and wanted to qualify this review a little bit. Shoppers please remember that this is a $10 lens. Even off-brand lenses for the Canon cameras costs $200+, so please do not expect to achieve the same quality results using a screw attachment. It may work in a pinch, but I would not rely on this attachment for critical photo ops when you can afford a true wide angle lens. Despite my initial thought that I would get a lot of use out of this lens, I haven't taken it out of bag, since I wrote this original review in December 2009. I haven't found the need for it. If fact, for wide angle or panoramic pictures,I use my camera's continuous shooting mode to take a series of pictures and use Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 [OLD VERSION] to splice the pictures together. It includes a feature that does this for you automatically and the results are amazing.

I got the UV filter I needed plus a bunch of other really useful supplies for less than the price of the Hoya UV filter by itself from elsewhere (even here at Amazon). The lens pen seems like it's going to be really handy (I've only used it once so far, but it worked well, and it's nice and compact). Even the little lens cap elastic strappy thing seems like it will be very helpful for not losing my lens cap. All the extras seem to be off-brand/no-name (other than the Hoya filter) but they don't seem crappy or anything. Just un-branded. Which is fine by me.
Shipped via standard USPS and got to me fairly quickly even tho I don't think it was mailed out until a few days after my order was placed. I ordered on a Tuesday, got it on Saturday, I think it actually shipped Friday, from someplace pretty near where I live. Perhaps had I paid for 'expedited' shipping it'd have gone out more quickly. Nevertheless, I'm very pleased with the purchase.

(More customer reviews)I was mostly interested in protecting my wide-angle lens and among the few options available for a 72mm thread this was one of the cheapest so my expectations weren't high about the product or the brand. The polarizer works well and cuts down on reflection quite well, occasionally making the sky so dark blue at maximum angle that it looks space-like.
Slight vignetting is to be expected especially if you're using a wide-angle setting (I use it with my Canon Powershot S3 for an adjusted focal length of 24mm in 35mm eq.).
While mounting another filter like the UV one might add some protection, it creates a bigger vignetting problem. I have found little use for the Fluorescent filter as most digital camera like mine come with either a manual white balance or a preset for artificial lights condition... you can use it for its rosy tint.
Comes with a protective pouch for all three filters.

(More customer reviews)I see that in the negative ratings here the people simply misunderstood what these are for. They are to move your camera in CLOSER to the subject and simulate a macro lens. What they do is essentially act as a magnifying glass. And like one, you need to move it in and out till you find the appropriate distance for it to work properly. This is not a tele-converter.
I find they work quite well. I have had macro lenses in which the subject takes up the sensor, a 1:1 ratio. These however allow for the subject to assault the sensor. Instead of life size these make for race of super giant monster sized. Ultra macro can be achieved with the small expenditure of fifteen bucks.
I find there is no outstanding vignetting or aberrations. At the highest magnifications there is an extremely shallow depth of field, so be sure you are prepared to work with that if you plan on working in those types of magnification.
Overall a great product, and with macro lenses starting at $500, I encourage you to sacrifice just a little of that macro lens fund to just give these a try and see if you can't go spend that extra money saved up on a hot date, camera geek.
