(More customer reviews)I sure am not an expert and this is my first spotting scope, yet after doing the research and owning a pair of 8 x 42 Barska binoculars (I love) I pulled the trigger on this scope. I am delighted with it especially compared to its competition that is pricey. Here I feel it is a great bang for the buck scope. It is clear and stable and sees birds close(10M) as well as far (1 KM) for hawks. I even left the Gladiator out and while it was covered with rain and dew, a quick wipe off and no damage. The stand could be improved, but as for the scope I am very happy.

(More customer reviews)I purchased these rubber lens covers for a pair of Fujinon Techno-Stabi - Binoculars 12 x 32 - image stabilized binoculars. The lens covers themselves are flexible enough to fit nicely over the objective lens and provide great protection for them... but the barrels of the objective lenses are too short to accommodate both the covers and tether rings. Therefore, for my particular binoculars, I plan to cut off the tethers and rings and just use the covers themselves to protect my binocs.
September 6 update: I tried putting these lens covers on a pair of Canon 10x30 Image Stabilization Binoculars w/Case, Neck Strap & Batteries binoculars, and they fit that model also. Again, the barrels of the objective lenses are short, so you'll need to cut off the tether ring. But the rubber caps fit nice and snug, so I don't see a problem with them falling off easily.

Alpen 18-36-60 spotting scope Kit Review

(More customer reviews)Recently returned from a week in Yellowstone NP where I watched 4 grizzlies, 13 wolves, countless bison and elk with this scope. Although I was surrounded by folks who had spent hundreds more on their scopes, I was excited to discover no real difference between this scope and the nikon, bushnell, telestron, etc. that they had and my Alpen. I was watching animals from distances between a mile and a few hundred feet and was never disappointed. Even in winds of 30-40 mph I was able to keep the animals in focus at a mile away.(Don't forget to brace your tripod in any wind!) I use this scope on a Slik U9000 tripod and backpack with it. The hardcase is an added bonus for traveling with it. A great value!

Celestron 93635-A T-Adapter for NexStar 4GT Review

(More customer reviews)The Celestron 93635-A T-Adapter connects the rear cell of a NexStar 4 or C90 scope to a T-ring (sold seperately) which is designed to fit your specific camera. There isn't much to the adapter -- just a threaded metal tube with a metal screw-on ring on one end. Note that you will need to use your camera in fully manual mode though the camera's internal light meter will probably function normally allowing you to set the shutter speed for a proper exposure during daylight hours.
While the T-Adapter does function as advertised, it suffers from a design flaw -- the connecting tube is too narrow causing severe vignetting (i.e., the corners of phtots are cut off and appear very dark or black) at least for a 35mm full frame camera mounted to a C90. I have not tried it with a C-sized digital camera yet. Due to the severity of vignetting, you might want to consider an alternative model of T-Adapter or, better yet, a Tele-Extender designed for Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes such as the Orion 1.25" Standard Tele-Extender which can be used in place of a T-adapter on the C90, doesn't suffer from these sever vignetting problems and is much more versatile.
Note: A tele-extender is similar to the T-adapter but is designed to optionally allow you to place a telescope eyepiece inside - between the scope and the camera - for even higher magnification. For example, with the T-adapter, a C90 can function as a 1200mm manual camera lens. With a tele-extender, it can do the same or, by adding a 18mm eyepiece, act as a 5000mm or greater lens.

Celestron 52250 80mm Ultima Zoom Spotting Scope Review

(More customer reviews)I originally bought a Raven from Eagle Optics. But I returned it. Raven was $400. It had poor eye relief and poor image quality but very good scope construction (housing, cordura case etc). I went to Cabela's and tried the usual high-end suspects as well as Meopta, and Cabela's ED (Big Sky?). Thought I was going to have to resign myself to spend the big bucks 'someday'. But, I persisted and stopped by Ryder Hobby shop 'just to check it out'. Am glad I did. The Celestron Ultima 80 gave me the 'wow' factor I thought I was going to see in Raven and only saw in the highest end scopes. Well made, crisp images, you cannot beat it for the price. As good if not better than the Cabela's ($700) scope. I can recommend it. Bought it for $239. Also compared the C5 and other C90 scopes. Not nearly as good either.Would have been neat to check out the 80 ED, but they did not have it and it runs twice the price. I read all the same on-line reviews you probably have, and I can't figure out how this one did not figure much more prominently or how the Raven got such good reviews. Raven reminds me of my old Tasco binoc's. I'm very happy with the Celestron 80. Saw wood ducks, ring necks, Sand Hill Cranes all this evening approaching twilight with exceptional clarity. Even allows for T-ring mount for camera I read. Hope this helps.

It's very easy to see the .30 cal holes at 200 yards and light transmission and clarity are very adequate. This scope also comes with 2 carrying cases, a nice added bonus. When comparing this scope to my friends bushnell of the same power this one wins hands down, a definate purchase for someone on a budget and looking to get good quality for limited funds.

Alpen 15-45x60 w/45 deg. eye piece, wtrpf Spotting Scope Review

(More customer reviews)First, don't be fooled by the product image now offered by Amazon; this is indeed the model 728 with 45-degree eyepiece; Amazon pictures the similar model 725 with straight-through viewing. I use a spotting scope for birding, and I've been quite content with my trusty Bushnell Spacemaster (vintage 1992). But in preparation for a vacation that involves international airline flight I wanted a lightweight alternative. If I had unlimited financial resources I might have considered a few of the big-ticket products with impressive reviews, but money IS an object. But so is quality, and I knew I wanted a BAK-4 prism, multi-coated lenses (of course I would have preferred fully multi-coated), waterproof construction, compact design, light weight, and reasonably good close focus. The Alpen 728 specifications looked good, and I took a chance. I'm glad I did. This scope weighs less than two pounds, is quite compact, has a nice retractable sunshade, and delivers very good optical performance (especially when used in the range from 15X to about 30X). Light transmission is quite satisfactory below 30X, as is color rendition. I get a good sharp image. I can focus to less than 25 feet. The 18mm eye relief at 15X is quite sufficient for those of us who wear glasses, and even at 45X (with 15mm eye relief) it's still usable. The 45-degree eyepiece does facilitate shared viewing, and perhaps most importantly allows the use of a shorter tripod. I even like the threaded eyepiece cover. The cloth case is a nice touch; I'm not sure I'll ever use the tabletop tripod, but it looks like it would work for those who do use such a support. I'm not sure that sentiment will permit me me to replace the Spacemaster as my primary birding scope, but I feel quite confident that the Alpen 728 will see its share of use, even when airline travel isn't involved.

(More customer reviews)I debated long and hard about whether I wanted to spend $349 for this spotter, vs. $124 for a comparably sized Brunton Echo. Since I love German engineering, and because this scope offered an angled eyepiece (an important feature for me), I went with the Minox. My decison was validated the moment I removed it from the padded carrying case. The scope is hefty for its size. It has a wonderful solid feel to it and operation of the focus ring, power selector and extending rubber eyecup all convey a sense of quality and precision. The optics are bright, super clear, with excellent contrast -- what one would expect from lenses ground in Wetzlar. I see no distortion at any power and the scope can resolve small details at 100 yards with no difficulty. I was delighted to find that the scope also focused down to very close objects @ 10 feet distance. I mated it to a Slik Mini Pro V tripod and the two are an unbeatable combination. If you want a quality optical instrument in a convenient size, this is the scope for you. Bravo Minox!

Nikon - Prostaff Spotting Scope Review

(More customer reviews)My friend and I are in a bird research program. We find, map, and study birds of prey. I recently bought a Nikon Prostaff 20-60 power spotting scope. On one of our outings we decided to compare my scope, the Nikon with his a Swarovski 20-60 power. We set them up side by side looking at the same objects. After looking a each object he said to me "your scope is brighter, clearer, and has more contrast than mine." I had to agree. The only thing the Swarovski was better at, no color fringing. The Nikon had a small outline of red when set at 30 or more power. The cost of the Nikon about $600, the Swarovski over $1700. I hope this review helps someone trying to make a choice in the complex world of buying a good scope. Oh, and by the way, the tripod sold with the Nikon scope is terrible. Invest in a good set of legs, you'll be glad you did.

Alpen 20-60x80 Spotting Scope Kit Review

(More customer reviews)Solid construction. Image is bright and resolution excellent at 20mm to roughly 40mm, falls off from that point on but is still decent at 60mm. Eye relief is good, but I wish the rotating eye cups had detents that would hold them in place at various extensions. I'm used to ring-type focusing mechanisms, such as those on DSLR camera lenses, so it took me a while to get used to using the Alpen's focusing knob. It isn't as fast as a focusing ring, but once I got accustomed to it, I found focusing to be easy and precise. Plus, unlike a ring focusing mechanism, it is easy to use with a soft support, such as a bean bag. This is a big scope, so you really need something solid on which to mount it. The table-top tripod that comes with the scope is usable in circumstances where you have a reasonably flat surface on which to place it, but if you're in the field you'll probably need a full-size tripod. (I haven't tried it on a monopod.) One nice feature is the rotating tripod ring, which allows you to rotate the body of the scope without changing the aiming point. Obviously, top end scopes from Swarovski and Leica will outperform this scope, particularly at the far end of the zoom range. But then, those scopes cost on the order of 7-8 times as much. This may be the best scope at its price point, and other reviewers have noted that it outperforms some "big name" scopes that cost 2-3 times as much.
