Velbon QB-5LC - Quick release plate Review

Velbon QB-5LC - Quick release plate
Average Reviews:

I couldn't find a quick release plate for my old Ambico tripod after a long search on Google, so I measured the opening where the plate rests. I logged on to several web-sites only to find out that all they provided was a picture of their quick release plates. Others had plate numbers for certain models of tripods, which is OK if you need to order a replacement plate for a specific model tripod.
After much searching, I came across the Adorama Camera web-site. They had specifications with their Quick Release Plates along with very good pictures. I found one that closely matched my measurements and appeared to look the same as my old one. After I received my plate, I did a little filing and sanding and had a plate that matched my tripod.
The price was very reasonable and the item was shipped and in my hands in just a few days. The extra effort they put in to list each plate's measurements, resulted in a satisfied customer.

This is the fourth Gemini dual wireless mike system I've had in the past ten years. It works well in a large meeting room. It gets packed up and moved on at least a weekly basis. In each case, after 2 or 3 years, one of the channels has stopped working. Not sure whether it's the transmitter or the receiver that fails. As far as I can tell, you can't by component parts separately. But the overall price is low enough that it's not bad enough to replace the whole system from time to time.

Nikon Coolpix S50 7.2MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Vibration Reduction Zoom (Red) Review

Nikon Coolpix S50 7.2MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Vibration Reduction Zoom (Red)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Nikon COOLPIX S50 is a compact, very stylish looking digital camera. This particular model has cherry-pearl red finish on the front, the top, and the bottom, accented by shiny chrome sides. The backside is black, dominated by a large LCD screen.
The lens on the S50 is of non-protruding kind, automatically covered when the camera is off.
This camera features a number of automatic scene modes, plus two automatic modes accessible with two tiny buttons on the top of the camera (anti-shake and portrait), plus a special High ISO mode. The range of manual controls is very limited. RAW file output is not possible.
The menu system on this camera is multi-level; the menus change depending on which mode the camera is on. This in turn requires jumping through several windows to change controls; this can sometimes be confusing. For example: The ISO control is in the Shooting menu, where the VR on/off control is in the Setup menu. Furthermore, if the flash is turned on, it will not fire in the BSS (best shot selector) mode, which is understandable. However, turn the self-timer on, and the flash will fire; to turn the flash off, you would need to first turn the BSS off, and only then you could reach the flash modes menu.
Look for on-line reviews with sample pictures to decide if the picture quality this camera produces will satisfy you. In my opinion, the pictures from S50 are noisy, soft, and over-sharpened. However I am willing to put up with so-so performance to have a camera that is as small as this one. If you are prepared to carry a bigger camera, you can definitely find one that takes better pictures.

Nikon's COOLPIX S50 combines 7.1 effective megapixels with a 3x optical Zoom-Nikkor glass lens for stunning prints as large as 16x20 inches. VR Image Stabilization technology minimizes the effect of camera shake, and the huge, bright high resolution 3.0-inch LCD offers a 170 degrees wide-angle of view that makes it easy to compose and share pictures. Keep shooting even in lower light with the COOLPIX S50's High ISO 1600 capability. The sleek, black, all-metal design slips right in your shirt pocket or purse. To top it off, the One-Touch Portrait Button gives you easy access to Nikon's In-Camera innovations that makes taking portraits of family and friends a snap!

Sennheiser MKE 400 Shotgun Microphone - Black Review

Sennheiser MKE 400 Shotgun Microphone - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this microphone a couple weeks ago to use it with the Panasonic tm700 camcorder. My experience level with microphones is above average. I have several high end larger shotgun mics that were just too awkward to use with a traditional camcorder. My overall impression of this microphone is that it sounds good and functions as intended.1. The sound quality from this microphone is pretty good and it performs as a shotgun mic should, rejecting sounds and noise from its sides and behind it and
focusing on sound in front of it. (which is why its superior to on board omnidirectional mics when ambient sounds are a problem)
2. Form factor is small. No one should buy this mic if they don't have to have a miniature shotgun mic. Conclusion: The Sennhseiser MKE 400 works well and sounds good for its intended purpose. It is a shotgun mic. It is not an omnidirectional mic.
It will help if you have a noisy camcorder and want to eliminate the sound of the camera. It is useful in "focusing" on sounds in front of it as
opposed to behind or to the side of it. It is a 200.00$ miniature microphone and won't perform as well as larger more expensive shotguns.

Like all shotguns it will sound better if its closer to its subject like on a boom pole.
A word about microphones.....almost any camcorder you buy new will be worth thirty to fifty percent less in a years time and nothing in 5 years. Any microphone you buy will be worth almost what you paid for it. Quality microphones don't lose their value and the technology hasn't changed in decades. While I am recommending this microphone for its intended purpose I would suggest anyone that doesn't already have another larger microphone to go ahead and get a full size high quality mic first. Otherwise you will be penny wise and pound foolish.

Nikon - Camera flash connection kit - black Review

Nikon - Camera flash connection kit - black

It adds a PC sync socket to cameras that only have a hot shoe and makes it possible to use a much larger selection of flash units with a variety of cameras, not just Nikon.
While it does not do TTL, most flash units can use their automatic sensors to meter output.
Used it extensively with a Nikon Coolpix 5000 and newer Vivitar 285 and 283 flash units. Also tested it with a Canon Rebel.
Please note:
Make sure you test your flash's trigger voltage if using something not recommended for your camera, digital or not.
If you have a camera that uses iTTL, like the Nikon D70s, you pretty much have to get one of the iTTL flash units.
