Lowepro Toploader 65 AW SLR Holster Case Review

Bought this bag after reading the good reviews. This bag provides excellent protection for your gear. EVERYTHING is overengineered for its purpose; so you really get your money's worth. Plenty of cushioning. This bag works great for my beloved Nikon D50 with the standard kit lens. I'd give it 5 stars if I had just a little bit more room for all the wires, connectors and rechargeable batteries/dock that come with a digital set-up. Its a little bit of a tight squeeze with what I've got right now. Overall worth it!!!

Think Tank ~ Digital Holster 20 - V2.0, Regular Size SLR Review

I went to the local pro camera store looking for a Tamrac 5625 Pro Digital Zoom 5 Case or Zoom 7. The salesman suggested that I also look at the Think Tank Digital Holster 20. I'm glad I did.
The Think Tank holster seemed much more refined for about the same price. It attaches to your belt a lot easier and it will stand up on the nose.
A Nikon D300 with 28-200 mm lens fits just fine along with a neck strap. There is one pocket on the outside of the case for a spare battery and memory card. The case has very rugged zippers.
One of the things I liked best about the Think Tank compared to Tamrac was the carrying handle. The Think Tank handle was comfortable, the Tamrac NOT.
I bought a nylon strap to use as a belt which works nicely. I'm very happy with this product, after searching for a long time. Rejects include the awful Nikon leather case, which is very stiff and heavy and has no belt loop.

Designed for digital SLR cameras, each Digital Holster features two vertical lengths to accommodate different sizes of lenses and hoods, both reversed and in position ready to shoot. Designed for digital SLRs, such as the Canon 5D, 10D, 20D, and 30D, and the Nikon D70, D80, and D200. The shape of the bag conforms to the camera itself, with one side straight and the other side curved. It can actually stand up by itself!

As an avid photographer I was pleased to have this opportunity to take Lowepro's Toploader Zoom 45AW camera bag on a test run. Besides protection one of the first things I look for is actual interior storage capacity. Nothing worse then bringing home a bag and finding out your gear doesn't fit. My go to camera is the Nikon D300. This bag easily accommodated both my camera and an attached Nikkor 18-105mm lens. The interior dimensions are 6.3"W x 4.1"D x 6.4"H. It weighs in at 6 ounces.
It goes without saying that inspection of the padding is paramount. Anything less then 5mm is unacceptable. The folks at Lowepro did a first rate job in that area. The quality of the weather proof nylon is good. The stitching job is adequate. The interior zipper pocket is nice but offers only enough space for a few SD cards. The front exterior zipper pocket allows for easy storage of batteries or filters. Just a note that the front pocket is not padded.
The much touted all weather cover is a sweet addition. It does a great job and easily folds back into the velcro fastened storage compartment. Even though I like the lanyard mounting on the zippers, its a given that the thin nylon cords will eventually have to be replaced. The belt loop is a novel idea. I used it as an anchor for other gear. The removable nylon shoulder strap is fully expandable. The only thing I don't like about this camera bag is the plastic D rings and hooks. Its been my experience that over the years these items do not hold up well. I'll be replacing the plastic parts with metal.
Speaking from personal experience, I can say that Lowepro has for years lived up to their billing as having one of the best lifetime limited warranties anywhere. Four years ago I had a problem with the zippers on one of their products. I sent it to the factory for repair and surprisingly received a new replacement bag. That alone speaks volumes. Lowepro also sports a consumer friendly website for registration and product support.
Even with the plastic parts issue, I find the overall quality of the Lowepro Toploader 45AW Camera Bag first rate. For the Amazon price alone, this bag is a bargain.

I've been looking for THE holster-type bag eversince I bought my camera last January 2009. I'm the type who doesn't want his camera to be dangling around his neck while not in use. Tried several holster-type bags in stores (around the $20 - $30 range) and they just couldn't serve my needs. Some of the bags were too bulky, others are hard to open, and then some felt cheap and were not padded enough.
Then comes the Lowepro Toploader Pro. Note that there is another older model that doesn't have the word Pro at the end which is way bulkier than this one. So I first saw the bag in youtube and was exited to get one after seeing how the bag opens. At the time when I saw the video, the bags were not available yet so I kept on searching for it in Amazon until I was able to purchase it.
Tried my Canon XS with a 55-250 lens attached. A friend also tried his Nikon D90 with an 18-200 lens attached. Both fit perfectely and still enough room for other stuff. A camera with a battery grip could easily fit on it as well. At the top, I was able to put my 500d zoom filter, an RF remote with both transmitter and receiver, an htc touch phone, and a creative zen mosaic player. At the front, I had my lenspen and the canon battery charger. The bottom part of the bag has very thick padding which gives me the peace of mind should I drop the bag on a hard surface. The whole bag is very very well padded.
The bag came right on time, a day before we went hiking. I also bought a lens case (LC1 from lowepro) so I could carry another lens with me. The lens case was attached to the side of this bag so I didn't have to worry about it. This bag was very comfortable, I didn't feel I was carrying it (compared to my fastpack backpack). The strap goes to the opposite shoulder and it comes with a loop that goes behind the carrier to secure the bag in place and avoid it from moving around. I was able to easily take a shot and then put the camera back to the bag. In case there's a nice view that I wanted to shoot again, I could easily open the latch, flip the cover, then grab my cam. This is the main reason why I got this bag. I could now walk around with my camera inside the bag and easily grab it for fast shooting like an on the spot incident that might not happen again without having to wear my camera around my neck. The bag also serves as a leverage for my left elbow when I'm focusing on a particular subject.
One last add on to the bag is the all weather cover which slips out from the bottom. It will cover the whole bag except the back part that is against the wearer. This doesn't bother me at all as the material of the bag is somewhat water-repellant already. With the cover on, you can still open and close the bag. This is a plus when it suddenly rains or when you have the bag on a cruise, boat, or any other water activity.
Best holster-type bag, can't think of another similar product that beats this one. Can't even find one con for this bag. It's worth the price for its functionality and protection.

My rating: 4.5 out of 5. The reason is because I would have preferred the padding to be slightly thicker all-around, but the case still provides decent padding.
The inside of the case has these measurements:
7.5" vertical height from bottom of case without soft shelf.
Dimensions of bottom of case is 4" x 3.5"; Dimensions of top of case is 5.5" x 4".
INSIDE SPACE: The case comes with a soft shelf that attaches to the velcro sides on the inside. The shelf allows you to create a hidden space of 2" to 3" in height, leaving a 4" space above. You can put a smaller device in the top for a better fit, or two different devices in the case. I keep my Canon SX210 Digital Camera in the hidden space, and I put my Panasonic HD Camcorder in the top space. The shelf can also be used as a divider to create space for two skinnier, but taller devices.
POCKETS: There's a flat pocket in the top flap that measures 5" x 3" for fitting about 8 memory cards.
There's a pocket in the front that can hold a digital camera, or a personal recording device, or battery and battery charger, or an A/C plug.
PADDING: The base has a tough, thick padding, about 1/2" thick. The padding in the rest of the case is about 3/8" thick. I would have preferred if the padding was either 1/2" thick all around, or even a 5/8" thick padding. It would have been a perfect case then, but it's still offers great protection.

I don't use this case for my DSLR. It does fit my Canon XSi DSLR, but not with the lens attached. I can store the 18-55 lens in the bottom space, and the body on the soft shelf. The bottom won't hold the 55-200 lens, or the camera body. It will only hold small lenses.
This is an excellent case. The handle is tough and padded well. The zippers are high quality, zip smoothly, and don't jam at all. The shoulder strap is a flat, thin piece of fabric, not padded at all. It's not really uncomfortable, but it would have been nice to have a padded strap. The strap reaches a maximum of 20" down off the shoulder. Other than the padding issue, this is a near perfect case based on my use. 4.5 out of 5.
