Tamrac N-11 - Backpack Camera Straps - Black Review

Tamrac N-11 - Backpack Camera Straps - Black

I do quite a bit of hiking, hunting, etc - all things outside where lugging around a large pack for the camera is possible, but doesn't make that much sense. As such, I've tried a wide variety of ways to make it easy to get that quick shot while also protecting the camera. I have pouches I attach to my backpack belt for my lenses and the camera itself. The problem was I found myself hanging the camera around my neck as I was hiking and my neck would get sore quickly.
I found this and decided for ~$20 it was worth the try. To be blunt, it is probably the best thing I've bought for hiking with the camera - including all my lenses. This attaches to the camera via clips which appear to be sturdy enough to last for a while. There are two clips to attach to "O" rings on backpacks. Mine didn't have those, but a couple of "D" clips used for climbing got to the same end result.
I tried this out in Zion National Park. We were climbing across rocks (didn't necessarily follow the path...) and this worked great. First, it places the weight on my shoulders, not neck (it did bump against my chest but not enough to bother me). Second, it is at the perfect level (there are adjustments that can be made - although minor) to grab quickly to get that shot of a fleeting bird, deer, moose, etc. Third, it takes seconds to disconnect and stuff into my holster bag - while also taking much less space since there's only a couple inches of strap on each side after it is unhooked.
I highly recommend this to anyone who hikes with a DSL camera!

Tamrac N-5059 Leather Padded Digital Camera Strap (Black) Review

The manufacturer's picture of this strap isn't very good. So I took a shot of it myself and uploaded it here so that you can appreciate it. At the center is a suede padding that stops it from slipping while it's around your neck. It's light and comfortable. When using your camera on a tripod, if you want to remove the strap to get it out of the way, you can easily unclip it near the base very easily. The clips are very sturdy and they've never come undone on me in the nine months I've been using it. See my photo to understand what I mean.
The biggest reason I bought this camera strap is because I didn't like the one that came with my Canon 5D Mark II. It has red trim says in very large letters "Canon EOS 5D Mark II" I don't mind showing off that I have a cool camera, but I don't want to advertise for Canon as I walk around outside. This strap makes my camera a bit more discrete and looks much cooler.

Promaster Contour Pro Strap, Black Review

Promaster Contour Pro Strap, Black

I bought this strap to replace the one that came with my Rebel T1i. The main things I was looking for in a strap were comfort and the ability to sling my camera over my shoulder and carry it by my hip. This strap comes through on these desires and then some.
The total length of the strap is 52 in, not including the extra 1/2 inch used to safely secure straps. If I add in the width of my camera on the straps, this gives me an effective 4.5 Inches. The total circumference of the oval made by this strap can get around ~56 inches. Now, I'm a pretty big guy, I stand about 5' 10" 5' 11" on a good day, But I have a rather barrel chested build, so I tend to wear my strapped items, backpacks, book bags, golf bags, at their extended limit. This strap goes around my body over the should and comfortably rests on my hip. I believe that a skinnier person of great heights could easily wear this strap at the same position. and this strap will probably fit most people including the lovely ladies at heights less than mine.
I believe that it is pretty obvious that I find this strap to be comfortable, I walked for 10 miles the other day with a decent sized 250mm lens and never felt it. The neopream really does a great job at absorbing the weight of the camera system. I doubt it will do anything to help out with my Bigma 150-500mm lens, but I haven't tried it.
As far as the price goes, amazon sells this strap at a reasonable price. I bought mine at a local camera shop. I may have paid twice as much for it, but sometimes it's nice to support the local guys, not that I have ever had a problem with Amazon (as my purchasing history will prove.
This strap does have a nice quick release system for tripod use, now I know that most finer caliber straps have this feature, but to me this was a very nice addition. I was always slightly annoyed by the unused neck strap just sloppily flopped over on it's side while not in use. with this strap I can disconnect the strap easily and quickly from the camera, thread it through a belt loop and reconnect it to securely get the strap out of my way. all that is left are two insignificant straps that I can either let dangle discretely to the sides or better yet reattach them around a secure section on my tripod for added security.
I would love to say that I am as big a fan of the quality as the rest of the features, but one of the straps slipped and came undone before I even had a chance to fiddle with them. if it weren't for some quick hands on my part, I wouldn't be so favorable with this product. I don't know if a kid had messed with mine in the store, I can't imagine Promaster letting this be standard practice, just another reason to shop with Amazon, there Amazon you happy now? I guess this will show me for trying to support the little mom and pop store during a down economy. :)
Overall this is a great product, I have not had a single indecent since that first day, so I know the quality of the product is certainly top notch.

I like Lowepro equipment and have quite a few of their items. So I was pleased to see that they had come out with a line of straps. I was particularly attracted to the non-slip grip feature. I just put the strap on my Canon 20D and am very disappointed. First, the strap is rather short with no capacity to make it longer. The worst part ... the non-slip grip feature is totally ineffective. It wouldn't stop anything from slipping off your shoulder. It doesn't even feel tacky. My old UPstrap is going back on the camera and this thing is going in the trash. What a waste of money! Why did I give it two stars? I don't even know!

The strap is a comfy, bouncy, extra-wide neoprene-padded style that works OK with a D300/70-200mm combo. Moderate length adjustment in the 1" webbing. The two pockets for memory cards, etc., are a nice touch and also bit of a bother. If you don't want to put cards or an eyepiece cover or a Photon light in them, they only add bulk. (The strap hardware won't slide through their loops, so cutting them off is the only way to get shed of them.) This strap is bulky since Tamrac elected to include disconnects above the 1cm web that goes through the camera eyelets. The disconnects are handy for a monopod, etc., but add an element of risk unless you put on a loop of fishing line as a backup. I prefer the Optech for its simplicity.

This product is unbelievable. I have a Nikon D700 and D300 and at time carry them both with the OEM strap and a 70-200 AF-s VR f/2.8 lens and a 24-70 AF-s F/2.8 lens (heavy stuff). After an hour or so my back and neck hurt. With this strap I can go all day as the weight is on my shoulders and back not my neck. What a great product. Only bad part was the vendor Amazon used. They sent the wrong item the first time, blamed Amazon, and caused me grief. Would not send me out the plates they forgot, finally I had to send the item back and reorder. Definitely not the way to do business.

Purchased this strap in conjunction with my Canon 5D Mk2. I've previously (still) own a Rebel XS and a T2i. I vehemently dislike neck straps. They're uncomfortable around the neck and they force the camera to hang awkwardly, especially with a long or heavy lens. In general I use a hand strap for added security when working with my camera but really needed something to carry it, secure it when walking, allow me access to both hands. I have a Cotton Carrier system that I use under certain circumstances but it's "I'm wearing a bullet-proof vest" appearance tends to draw unwanted attention at times.
The Black Rapid RS-5 is a great solution for me. A single side slung strap with a loop mounted carabiner attaches to your camera. Supplied with the strap is a mounting stud which can be screwed into your camera's tripod mount, or alternatively in the case with those using Manfrotto connection plates, the carabiner can be attached to the hasp. This is a great arrangement as it allows me to keep the plates in place on the camera (or long lens tripod mounts). The strap is obviously adjustable so you can get the camera hanging comfortably at your side but still swing it up easily. A padded shoulder sleeve provides for a more comfortable experience. It also has several zippered and magnetic closure pockets for small item storage (phone, battery, memory card, keys). Two adjustable inline clips on the strap help to keep the sleeve and camera in their respective places, preventing them from shifting out of place during movement from carry to shooting and back again.
Overall a really great system. This particular package, RS-5 Strap with two Manfrotto RC2 plates was a real bargain as the plates typically go for $15-20 each.

Hakuba has created a GREAT product! It attaches to one of the strap loops on the right side of your SLR-type camera and screws into the tripod hole on the bottom. The grip is comfortable, especially for long shoots, and it allows a sense of confidence that you'll never drop your camera. You can actually relax your finger grip on the camera and the Hakuba keeps it in your hand without falling. Shooting one-handed is possible, but it's best for being always able to hold the camera easily when doing walk-around shooting. I hate shooting without it now. Highly recommended.

California Sun Sniper Steel-Steel Reinforced Padded Camera Sniper Strap (Black) Review

California Sun Sniper Steel-Steel Reinforced Padded Camera Sniper Strap (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love the product. It's exactly what the description says it is: comfortable, convenient, and the embedded steel wire certainly brings peace of mind. If the product looks like something you'd want, it will most likely suit your needs beautifully. The elastic-y bounce controller makes for an especially comfortable camera-lugging experience.
However.
The $500 dollar insurance (on the model with the steel wire insert) should not factor into your purchase decision. First of all, I purchased this product in July and the insurance expires on October 1st. That's 3 months.
Second, for legal reasons, this insurance is offered for free to the consumer, i.e. not embedded into the price. I've noticed that some of these straps are selling at a higher price "with insurance" and for less without. Do not be fooled, they all come with the insurance. Get the cheapest one you can.
Third, to cash in on the insurance, one must submit 1) a police report thoroughly detailing that the camera was cut off of your person through the cord, and 2) the strap itself. The problem here is that if the strap is cut, it's probably going to be stolen with the camera and you won't be getting that $500.
Fourth, your camera and accessories attached to it (which aren't covered, by the way) are worth far greater than $500.
To conclude, this is an awesome product with a stupid marketing ploy attached to it. I fully support the strap, just don't let the insurance factor into your purchase.

I don't know anybody that has gotten fond of their camera strap unless that have also gotten in the habit of holding onto their camera. I can't speak for everyone, but everyone I know has a problem with a Nikon D? hanging from the strap around their neck. It doesn't take long for you to want to grab the camera and take the pressure off of your neck. A full day of this is hell for an older person, while younger people just get use to it.
Here is the solution to the age old camera strap. The SunSniper doesn't work like an ordinary camera strap in two important ways. The first is that the camera isn't fastened to the strap. The strap is very comfortable, and the camera has a very sturdy part made of three metal parts that are securely connected together. At one end it attachés to your camera through the tripod mount at the bottom. Thee parts are engineered very well, and are very strong. At the other end of the metal parts is a D ring, but it's not really a D shape, it is a rectangular shape, as it goes around a flat strap. The camera is free to move all long the strap.
The strap has padded shoulder pads that are very will designed and can be adjusted to be anywhere on the strap. The idea is that everyone will have to adjust the strap to suit themselves. The strap is a sling type, so it goes cross from your shoulder to your opposite side, more like a seat belt.
Your camera can ride anywhere along your side, or on your backside, it's up to you where the camera sets when you are not using it. The main thing to note is that you won't be holding it, this is because the weight is not pulling on your neck.
When you want to take a picture, you simply reach down and grab your camera, as you raise the camera up it is sliding up the strap with ease. You will feel not resistance from the strap as you take your pictures. When you are done, you just rest it back down the strap and let it rest.
A video might be in store to demonstrate the ease of using this Sunsniper strap. I have tried to carry my camera will all kinds of straps, but this is the one to end that search for the perfect strap. There are others like it, and I won't dear say that they are not as good, but the design will be similar. I can tell you that I am a fan of fine engineering, and the Sunsniper was not made in any cheap way. It is rugged, comfortable, simple and easy to use.

I decided to buy an Op/Tech Grip Strap because it looks to be a similar design to Nikon's AH-4 but because it's made out of neoprene I thought it might be better for a whole day. I also own Op/Tech's Pro neck strap and that is a great neck strap that I highly recommend.
However, the Op Tech Grip Strap is horrible , it provides no support whatsoever and I felt as if my D700 was going to fall off my hand constantly. So the Grip Strap becomes a wetsuit for the Barbie's! I ended up purchasing the Nikon AH-4 and while it is a bit expensive it is worth it, the strap fits so nicely around my hand and offers better support than the Canon E1's I used to own, though they did a great job of support as well.
If you're looking for a good hand strap for your dSLR, then I would advise against the grip strap from Op/Tech. The Nikon AH-4 or Canon E1 are both much better designs and offer the support necessary.

RS-5 Camera Strap Review

RS-5 Camera Strap
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The R-Strap keeps the camera out of my way and my hands free when I'm not using it, yet it's right at my side when I want to take a photo. The RS-5 also has enough pockets for me to store three extra CF cards, a spare battery, and my mobile phone. On a recent weekend getaway, I was able to leave my camera bag in my car, because all of the essentials were tucked away in the R-Strap. It's a big improvement over the traditional neck strap.
That much I expected; here's what I didn't expect. Before I got the R-Strap, I would be, at any given time, either taking photos *OR* being involved in whatever was going on (child's birthday party, vacation, etc.). The camera was--literally and metaphorically--between me and everyone else. With the R-Strap it's much more natural--I can be more fully engaged with the people around me, and still have my camera instantly available when I need to capture a moment. I don't want to get all gushy about a camera strap, but this was a nice and unexpected benefit.
Now, a couple of minor issues. First, the strap does tend to slip forward or backward off of my shoulder. Not too often, but often enough that I wish they had used some kind of non-skid material as a backing. Second, all of that pocket space comes at a price: the RS-5 can get a little bulky. For situations where I can keep my camera bag nearby, I actually find myself wishing for the less bulky RS-4. I think the bulk may have something to do with the slipping problem, too.
On the plus side, construction quality is very good, and the hardware that attaches camera to strap seems very secure. It's very easy to detach the camera from the strap when you want to, but the locking carabiner ensures it won't happen by accident. And there's no velcro anywhere: nylon zippers and magnetic closures keep everything quiet.
Whichever you choose, the RS-4 or the RS-5, I'm sure you'll find it a big improvement over the old neck strap.

The RS-5 version of the R-Strap is based around a unique, layered design to accommodate more storage than you ever thought possible in a camera strap. Located on the front outside of the pad is a pocket for carrying a smart phone, large battery, walkie-talkie, or similar sized items. The top of the pad opens up to reveal even more storage within: enough to carry 9+ memory cards, ID, credit cards, and more. Load it up right, and youll never run out of memory or power. The silent closures are thanks to padded Neodymium magnets, so you can sift through your storage with out making a sound. Perfect for when you are sneaking up on a grizzly bear or when the bride is giving her vows!

I was an infantryman in the Marine Corps for 8 years and as such I am used to walking around all day with all kinds of things attached to, and hanging from, my body. So it was a big surprise to me when I got into photography how incredibly awkward and uncomfortable it is to walk around with a camera! I have a D300s which usually has a 16-85 or 70-300 attached, and compared to a flak jacket, ammo pouches, canteens, a rifle, and a host of other worthless stuff should be a piece of cake to carry around. Unfortunately it's always digging into my ribs, bouncing all over the place, swinging wildly if I bend or lean over - I mean it really takes the fun out of my hobby.
The Rapid Strap is based on the one-point, assault rifle slings that I am so used to and does a pretty good job of keeping my camera out of the way until needed. The problem that I have with it is two-fold: Firstly, it's way overpriced. There really isn't much to this thing and in my opinion it shouldn't be more than 40 bucks. My next problem is that it's actually too complex. When I first started seeing one-point rifle slings about 6 or 7 years ago they looked a lot like the rapid strap, with a bunch of buckles and fasteners and different straps. As time went on though, the designs became more and more simple until finally we were left with nothing but a nylon encased loop of bungy cord that clipped to the back of the rifle. This has become the standard sling for people who know what they're doing in the military, and it would make carrying a camera even easier. I hope somebody makes it soon.
