SP Studio Pro Mini Suction Cup Slave Strobe Review

Slave flashes are the best thing since sliced bread for taking good flash photos without a lot of technical stuff!
Just put this flash where it will fill in some light, turn it on and take your flash shot as usual. The flash on the camera must be turned on, because that's what fires this slave flash.
It doesn't mess up the exposure, but provides enough light that your photos loose a lot of the flat look that an on-camera flash provides.
If you want to take photos of small objects to post on the internet, a couple of these on either side of the subject will help you make clear, professional looking photos.
If taking photos indoors at a special occasion, you can leave the flash on, and pointed at a light colored wall, and it will work with other people's flash photos, too, improving the quality of the lighting for everyone.
I also like that it takes AA batteries. If you go on vacation and your rechargeables die, you can always find someplace to buy some. When camping, I found them at the camp store.
It's small and light to carry, too.
I haven't used it a lot yet, but the results have been excellent so far!

Sigma EF-530 DG Super Electronic Flash for Sony DSLR Review

Sigma EF-530 DG Super Electronic Flash for Sony DSLR
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Though the menu interface is not as nice as others, and the buttons look like they were taken from an 80's era toy, and the fact that the plastic feels cheaper than other brands this flash can hold its own against the best Canon can through at it. I had a 580ex I and while it was nice it weighed about twice as much as this 530 and did not put out a noticeable amount of power beyond this. I tested the flash on both at various f stops and power levels using full manual shutter/fstop/iso and flash power levels and found that for each fstop/power level combo I used for the 580 that the 530 provided just as much light output and my pictures were just as bright, with a slight difference at full power with f18 or higher where the 580 did push a tiny bit more light into my shots, but it is not enough matter in ANY of the other shots.
The recycle time is great on all but the 1/1 full power manual mode, where it is still better than a 580 or my 430 and heads and shoulders above a 550. It keeps up with me as well as the 580 does a stop down. It also outlasts a 580, which I always felt eats batteries more than uses them. The EF-530 seems to last about the same as a 430 somehow even though it puts out light like a 580. I am no electrical engineer but I am not sure how this is possible, but in my experience that is how it is.
It costs less than a 430, half of what a 580 runs you and does more than either one.
It does FP i.e. High Speed Sync with great results. It does second (rear) curtain sync, it can strobe based on a custom frequency you set up, so it can for instance pulse out a flash every second for 4 seconds or 5 per second for 1 second. This is cool for getting water drops, or bouncing balls, or any other moving object exposed multiple times in a single frame.
It can be a master flash, a slave flash, a non firing master, it has an optical trigger so it can be an optical slave. It works with all manor of remote triggers, albeit not as easily as a Canon does, you have to set the Sigma to the right mode first. It controls multiple slave groups via wireless, it works with ettl for automatic flash exposure, supports EV adjustments.
It does not have a sync port or pc port of any kind, it requires a hot shoe to fire or to be a remote wireless or optical slave. It pans and tilts though with 2 buttons like older flashes, not 1 button like the newer flashes do. That is more annoying than you might think.
The only real downside to this is how cheap it feels compared to the Canons, but with 2 Signas for the price of 1 580 and the fact that I have yet to actually break it in any way no matter how hard I have treated it I can honestly say that while it feels like it is of lesser quality it really isn't. Plus it is lighter than a 580, at least as light as a 430 give or take, so that may affect the feel of quality too.
I can honestly say that I would recommend this to anyone. In fact I do, to everyone who asks, because there is no good reason to pass this up. It does more, costs less, puts out roughly the same power, lasts longer, weighs less, looks good and works great. You won't regret it unless you are Brewster and need to spend your millions wastefully, at which point you would not care about reviews anyhow

When there's insufficient or unsuitable light available to take a picture, it's of paramount importance to have a ready source of supplementary light to fulfill the need. That's where Sigma's EF-530 DG super-electronic flash comes into play. Designed exclusively for Sony digital SLR cameras, the flash offers a powerful guide number of 174 feet/53 meters and boasts the latest TTL automatic flash exposure control for easy operation. More significantly, the EF-530 is outfitted with a host of advanced features, including a modeling flash function, a multi-pulse flash, a TTL wireless flash, an FP (high-speed) flash, a rear-curtain synchro flash, and a manual flash mode that allows the photographer to set the flash power level by up to eight stops. The auto power-off function, meanwhile, automatically shuts off the display to save battery power. And when the flashgun is fully charged, the flash emits a confirmation-ready light, letting you check the flash exposure level through the camera's viewfinder.
Like Sigma's lenses, the EF-530 flash incorporates the latest features and technological advances, most of which aren't found on any other flash units save those made by the major camera makers themselves. They are the most powerful and completely dedicated flash units available for 35mm SLR and digital cameras.

Kalt PC to Hot Shoe Adapter with Connecting Cord. Review

Kalt PC to Hot Shoe Adapter with Connecting Cord.

If you're going to buy this flash hot-shoe to PC cord adapter, chances are you will need the Pocket Wizard 804-605 MPCF Miniphone Male to PC Female Adapter. I've added this to my review because it's not easy to find on Amazon's site when searching. In fact, it's not easy to find at any photography store or photography site. I wish that made one of these hot-shoe adapters with a miniphone connector on the end of the cord instead.
So, to make that work, you need this adapter. They make an adapter with multiple inputs, multiple possibilities (e.g., PC female, PC male, etc.), but it doesn't connect as firmly as this one. I bought one of these about nine months ago and just ordered another because sometimes I want two and because sometimes I worry that I'll lose this little thing. I can't find that anywhere else.By the way, I agree with the other reviewers I see here that say the cord is flimsy. The shielding come loose from near the base of the hot-shoe pretty easily and quickly. So, try to handle it carefully--don't tug on it. Based on the poor quality, I would say buy something else, but there's nothing else. Other adapters don't have that separate center point for some reason and short out the flash. So, buy this hot-shoe adapter if you need it and get an extra one while you're at it.

I had minimal expectations for this rail given the price and country of origin, and my experiences with other 'inspired-by' products. I have to say I'm genuinely impressed at the heavy duty quality and smooth operation. This is what I would have expected to receive if I'd ponied up the $300+ for a name brand rail.

Lightweight and Compact Digital Canon Dslr Flash Review

I recently upgraded from the Canon S5 IS to the SX 10 IS and bought this Sunpak not for the extra flash range, but simply to take that task from the camera, and quicken / improve the recycle time (and increase battery life). My primary use is for fill flash, and this is mostly outdoors.
The Sunpak is small, pocketable and does the job well! At it's size, I was amazed to find it had been designed to provide bounce flash as well. I've experimented with this indoors and now have a new benefit I was not counting on (or looking for).
I also love the fact that this flash sits nicely atop the SX 10IS (and G10) - having tried a competitor's flash previously, it almost looked as though the tail was wagging the dog. The smaller, shorter profile of this flash makes a perfect package, the balance and esthetics are excellent. I'm spareing technical details here, but will mention the E-TTL II interface has been just as claimed - it WORKS!
If you have an SX 10 IS (or it's big brother with HD Vid & RAW), a G9 or G10 ... or even a Powershot S5 IS, this flash will be worth every penny to you. I was skeptical on third-party E-TTL II compatability, this Sunpak has allayed those concerns. On top of all this, it fits nicely in a small pocket of your camera bag and looks great!

The Nissin Di622 Mark II flash is a well-built flash with very good light output and recycling time. The price is cheap compared to OEM and other 3rd party offering sans China branded units and the wealth of off-camera triggering modes make this one of the most flexible flash system you can buy if you like off-camera lighting.
While Canon and Nikon units will offer more wireless TTL control when used off-camera (such as multi-channel grouping and power adjustments), they do cost twice as much, if not more. You'll have a hard time finding a Nikon/Canon flash in the used market that can match the price of a brand new Nissin Di622 Mark II, not to mention most low/mid-end flashes do not offer sync ports and optical slave triggering as well.
Apart from the nearly-useless AF-assist light, the Nissin Di622 Mark II is an excellent flash unit for first-time flash buyers as it allows you to keep using the flash as your skills improve. When you've moved past using the flash on-camera, the off-camera modes allow this flash to exist in your camera bag until it finally breaks down.
The main point is, the Nissin Di622 Mark II is a good buy because it does what all basic flashes can do (manual power, variable sync triggering options) but still offer modern flexibility such as ignoring pre-flash slave modes and wireless TTL modes.

If you have ever watched David Ziser photograph you will see how I work, except I have a TRIO on-camera and he has a 580EXII on-camera. I use it inside with an assistant holding a monipod, T5dR attached using a multi-clamp and a Turbo 2x2 battery powering the unit. The T5dR will have an umbrella out front when inside and outside it will be closed. The T5dR provides a lot of light. This comes in handy when shooting groups or individuals in full sunlight or very bright sunlight. Plenty of power for my work.I can adjust it from my TRIO, turn it on, off, on, up or down, change the power, etc. wirelessly using the optional FW7Q receiver. If my 580EXII is on board my camera, as seen with Ziser, my assistant can easily adjust power for me on the T5dR. The thing that would complete the package and give it a five-star rating would be if the T5dR would do HSS (high speed sync.
It is an expensive unit, made in the USA. It is a workhorse, and superior in light quality to the 580EXII remote flash. There are several diffusers and tinted stuff for it, which I don't use. It is fairly large, about twice the 580 flash, larger head (good thing)but probably weighs about the same as a 580 with batteries.
It is a great tool that I love because it provides great light and sets me apart from the on-camera flash photographers. It provides my client a more professional, higher quality look.

LumiQuest Cinch Strap Review

LumiQuest Cinch Strap
Average Reviews:

Like others, I didn't want to attach sticky velcro pads to my nice, new Nikon SB600 flashgun. The cinch strap does an admirable job of attaching the diffusion hood to the flash, but it doubles the assembly time. The soft rubber triangular pattern on the underside of the strap grips the flash body very well, but doesn't lock it completely solid. It does get displaced slightly after a few mins of manhandling the camera. If you put the flash on a tripod, this is not a concern, but if you're hand-holding the camera and moving about a lot, it might be.
I have bitten the bullet, stopped using the cinch strap and just stuck the 4 pieces of velcro to the flashgun now. Much quicker to set up and holds the diffuser more rigidly.

Bower SFD728C TTL Autofocus Flash for Canon E-TTL II Review

Bower SFD728C TTL Autofocus Flash for Canon E-TTL II
Average Reviews:

Let's face it, photography is an expensive hobby. And while I agree that more money will usually get you higher quality products, for relatively newcomers to the game like me, spending $200 on a flash right out of the gate is a bit much.
I was looking for a well priced but good quality flash, which I found with the Bower SFD728C. It is ETTL compatible with my Canon XTi, which made learning how to use a shoe flash as simple as the onboard flash. The guide number is also relatively high (don't remember the exact number),and I was able to shoot a wedding in a small church with little problem. It also has swivel and pan capabilities which don't seem to be as common in this price bracket, allowing for the all important bounce capabilities.
My only complaint was that the locking ring was not very secure, and occasionally the flash would slip just far enough off the contacts to cause the camera to wig out when trying to fire the flash or a mistimed flash.
Overall however, I found the Bower SFD728C to be an easy to use, inexpensive, yet good quality flash. I'm sure there are some features capabilities that one could get with the Canon brand flashes at 2-3 times the price, but I haven't missed them yet.

Quantum QB2 - External battery pack Review

Quantum QB2 - External battery pack

My Quantum Battery came with an older Metz CT4 flash. This was a great deal, because the entire package cost me about $150 on ebay. The great thing about this battery is that it holds its charge. My guess is 3-4 months after fully charging the unit. Yes it does take a little longer to recharge compared to regular rechargeable batteries, but once it is charged you can do an entire wedding without having to worry about it, or recharge. This a 9 volt battery so it is not suitable for some of the newer Digital cameras without a sync protector. It was made to be used with the older Metz flash systems CT5, CT4, CT1 etc. With a sync protector you can use both flash and Battery on any Digital camera. I decided to purchase the old handle-mount flashes, because of the extra power they provide, the broader light spread and the consistency, which to me, outshines TTL in many situations. I like this system so much that I went out and bought another CT4 and extra battery 2 so that I could do on location 2 light set ups. The cons are that the cable that attaches the flash to the battery is too short and I'm not sure if Metz sells any extensions.

I have a Canon 430EX flash unit and I wanted to be able to add some bounce ability and control, with or without a ceiling present. Then it also depends on the height of the ceiling that is present. This intelligent little unit unfolds and attachs to Velcro(tm), hook-n-loop fastened around the flash head. I purchased the LUMIQUEST Cinch Strap - Easily attach and remove flash bounce as I did not want to attach the double sticky-back Velcro(tm) directly to my flash unit. The Cinch Strap takes care of that and works like a champ.
This unit folds nicely for inserting a space the size of a small camera (read Canon S5 IS) and installs in seconds and allows one to go from shooting with the flash unit head in a direct vertical position down to a few angles below directly vertical.
It bounces light well and works great with the TTL features of the Canon 430EX and Canon camera.
It works to soften light and to soften shadows.
It gets a great THUMBS UP!! from me.

The Pocket Bouncer enlarges and redirects light at a 90 degrees angle from the flash to soften the quality of light and distribute it over a wider area. I actually have a very nice flash for an older Nikon camera, but it wouldn't "talk" to my Kodak P850, so I purchased this flash. I have been very happy with the operation of the flash so far. It has more power than the camera's built-in flash, supports auotmatic zoom and power level. You also can change the settings manually. The only issue I have had with the flash is that it is lacking features. It works just fine as a simple flash, and works with the camera settings, but is missing some professional modes and features like a remote flash function. However, it does the job well for the price, and will work with your Kodak camera.

Metz mecablitz 58 AF-1 digital Pentax Review

Metz mecablitz 58 AF-1 digital Pentax
Average Reviews:

I have a Pentax K-x and am waiting for the prices to drop to upgrade to a K-5. I was looking for the best of the best on-camera flash to capture unforgettable moments in low light or dark situations. This flash by all means completes this task.
I was looking at both Metz and Pentax flashes and was drawn to the Metz because they specialize in developing flashes and most differentiating in the 58 AF-1 is the "A" function which means Automatic. It uses on board readings to judge the output of the flash instead of relying just on the camera via PTTL. While both modes work well, I find that Automatic is better. Another distinguishing point of this flash is the rotating main flash allowing me to bounce off an available wall or ceiling and when I shoot directly I implore the built-in diffuser until I decide to pick up a real one to attach to it. The secondary flash is great for filling in shadows in faces and overall just adds so much more usefulness. There is a USB port for updating the firmware to support new cameras. The high power output allows me to light almost any situation as best as possible. Comparing this to the other ones available, the functionality and power output is really no comparison.
A flash will last me through several bodies and prices don't depreciate that much so I made the investment. It has many capabilities that allow me to learn more and use it to the fullest extent, such as being the master trigger for other flashes. I have had no issues with this flash whatsoever and power it using Sanyo Eneloop AA batteries.

I have to say that I was more than a bit skeptical that this product would work. I already owned an Opteka SB-1 mini diffuser; it came with velcro strips that you have to tape to your flash. While that worked well enough, it was kind of ugly having to have velcro stuck to your flash.
OK, I suppose it's function over beauty and I suppose a pro photographer wouldn't care what the flash looked like as long as it worked. But photography is my hobby, and I like to take care of the expensive stuff I have.
This strap simply wraps around the flash with the velcro side pointed outwards, and the diffuser attaches to the velcro. On the inner surface, it has a rubber-like texture that I suppose helps keep the strap in place, but its not nearly as "rubbery" as I would have thought.
At any rate, the strap holds the diffuser on pretty well, and I could moderately tug on the diffuser without really moving it around. Sure, if I tug on it hard enough, it's going to fall off, but I don't think it will under normal use.
I do notice that a similar product, model CL-1, is also available and that it looks to have less of the rubberized material on the underside. Not sure what the difference is, and the Opteka website doesn't really specify any of the attributes of one model vs. the other.
The good thing is that when I removed the sticky velcro that originally came with the diffuser, there was no residue left on the flash. So you may wish to simply stick with the original velcro.

Right out of the box I noticed a slight wiggle in the flash unit after mounting it to the camera. The next day the flash unit wiggle turned into a serious lean and flopping instead of wiggling. I could here the spring in the shoe mount when I tried to stand it up right. The outer shoe adapter housing that mounts to the flash unit body uses steel screws into steel threads. However, inside the adapter housing is a metal plate that holds the adapter together, it uses steel screws into plastic threads. One screw hole was stripped and the screw was half way out. The other screw was not far behind and was stripped beyond a snug fit. These two screws and a metal plate compress the spring and are what's really keeping the unit together and upright. The metal power contact plates are fastened with steel into plastic but they don't bare any of the weight. Anyway, it's not easy to describe without knowing the name of the actual parts. The bottom line is that there are two screws going into plastic threads that keep it from coming apart and they may come stripped like mine.
My choices were to send it back and get another one with the same cheap construction or just return the flash. I needed the flash the next day so I decided to make my own modifications with some epoxy. A little bit of epoxy in each screw hole and on the metal plate did the trick. I don't recommend doing this if you're not mechanically or electrically inclined. It also voids the warranty. I chose to do my own repairs because I had to and until I'm ready to spend the big bucks on good flash unit. I don't recommend buying the Bower SFD 290. The flash itself works well but it's just one plastic thread hole away from crashing to the floor.

Compares to canon's 500 buck 580EX. Has high speed synch, multi-flash (strobe) manual, ETTL, auto zoom, slave mode, very quiet charge, seems rugged, although large. Can be used as a wireless master flash. Comes with a protective pouch and a stand for the flash in slave-mode (with 1/4-20 threads)I could not get the slave mode to cooperate with my cameras built in flash (ttl on camera pre-flashes for a milisecond to get light reading, triggering slave early)but i also really didnt try or read the manual. However it worked perfect with an external flash to trigger. Flash is VERY powerful and in most cases charges back up instantly. Has a built in diffuser panel also.
