I can say that the hood looks nice. it is well finished with flat black inside the hood to keep reflections from lowering contrast in images. The outside looks a lot like the Nikon hood. It says "for Nikon' HB-17" on the hood. So, it's not meant to be a knock off, it's a replacement.
My only knock is that it does not click in quite as solidly as the original. But it doesn't fall off.
So, I give it a 5 for appearance and a 4 1/2 for solid mounting.

Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact. Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.
