Kingston 2 GB Elite Pro Secure Digital Memory Card ( SD/2GB-S ) Review

Kingston 2 GB Elite Pro Secure Digital Memory Card ( SD/2GB-S )
Average Reviews:

I've bought some of these cards for my various Canon P&S cameras, and gifted some too. Never had a data problem, ever. I've always bought them from Amazon.com (with amazon.com as the seller, not a third party).
I use one of the cards in an underwater housing-enclosed camera. Another in a camera I reserve for rough use when my DSLR might be in jeopardy from rain, snow, etc. They work great for long movies as well as hundreds of photos.
I haven't had a single Kingston SD card fail me yet. I look for Sandisk, but very often Kingston offers more performance for the price and honestly, I'll go for whichever is cheaper at the time. I like inexpensive, but not at the cost of quality. Kingston is a very reliable alternative to Sandisk if the price happens to be better.

******UPDATE******
Well a little more than 2 months after I got the card, it happened. Went to go listen to my music and nothing would play. Tried formatting a bunch of times, but any files I put on the card get corrupted. I really dont understand what would cause a card to suddenly stop working, but it has. Anyway, I probably wont even bother contacting the store in which I got it or Transcend. But if for some reason I actually get a replacement or get this card to start working again, I'll put up another update. And as everybody should know, Amazon does not allow you to modify the star-rating, but obviously I would bump this down if I could. (What follows is the orginal review I wrote on 2/11/07)
I had been watching this card since October '06 when it was $90. At the time there were only a handful of reviews and all bad. I bought the card in january when it went down to $55 (from Themstore), and so far it has been working flawlessly. The three main concerns people had about the card (which caused me to hesitate) were compatability, stability, and speed.
COMPATIBILITY- This card works in all three of my devices that I use it with: My Dell Inspiron 6000 with a built-in SD card reader, my Dell Axim x50, and my Canon PowerShot SD 450. It worked well with all three devices immediately. They all correctly read its size, and were able to read/write to it with no problems. I then formatted the card in my comp, and the final free storage space is about 3.83 GB.
STABILITY - I have been using the card for a couple of weeks with absolutely no problem, but I will definitely update the review if that changes at anytime. But for now, everything is perfect. I only mention this because at the time of the purchase, the top review was a one star stating that the card was unreliable.SPEED - taking pictures on my camera is fast and easy. I also own a 1GB Lexar Media SD card and a 1GB SanDisk SD Card. The Lexar and Transcend cards seemed to work a little faster in the camera (noticeable when recording movies). My main purpose for the Transcend 4GB Card is for my Dell Axim for Music, Movies, and general data storage. I am able to acess everything instantaneously.
I also conducted a couple of file transfer tests for anyone that is interested. This was after I transferred 1.8 GB to the card from my computer (once again, using its built-in card reader), and it took about 15 minutes. I had other programs running at the time, but I was still curious. First I downloaded a 400MB file to each one of the three cards, and then uploaded the file back to my computer from each. Writing information to a card will always be slower than reading information off of it. Downloading = Writing. Uploading = Reading.Lexar: Download - 2:24 Upload - :55
SaDisk:Download - 2:36 Upload - 1:01
Transcend: Download - 3:03 Upload - 1:16
As you can see the Transcend Card was a little slower. However, after these tests, I was able to download a 311MB AVI file onto the Transcend Card in only 1:44, so it does vary. It is also worth noting that the Transcend uses the FAT32 file sharing system while the other two cards are FAT. FAT32 is used in storage devices that are over 1 GB and up to 30GB. I am not sure if there is any speed difference between the two systems, but wanted to point this out.
CONCLUSION - the Transcend showed to be a little slower when transfering large files. This is not a factor if you are only moving a couple of mb's which only take a few seconds, but its a noticeable difference when moving a GB or two. However, the fact that this card holds 4GB and is fast for everyday use is all I care about. Overall, I am very happy with the Transcend 4GB SD Card. And unless this review has been updated, feel free to assume that I still am.

SanDisk 2 GB SDSDX3-2048-901 Extreme III SD Memory Card (Retail Package) Review

SanDisk 2 GB SDSDX3-2048-901 Extreme III SD Memory Card (Retail Package)
Average Reviews:

With my equipment, this 'Extreme' card is faster than an 'Ultra' only in a few situations. Usually, the two cards perform identically, and you can buy three Ultra's for the price of two 'Extremes'.
The 'Extreme' captured 29 RAW images in 30 seconds, while an Ultra captured only 23 (the camera supposedly can capture 3 frames/second). Using the computer's USB 2.0 card reader, the Extreme uploaded just a tad slower than the Ultra (1.2 seconds/frame, vs. 1.15 seconds/frame). When capturing JPG's, the two cards were about equal (85 vs. 86 frames in 30 seconds) with the Ultra a tad faster... a negligible difference.
If the camera could capture 5 frames/second instead of 3, or the card reader were faster, the 'Extreme' card might have been faster than the 'Ultra'; but this is the equipment I have.
So, if you know your equipment can take advantage of the extra speed and you'd rather have the slight speed advantage than have three cards ($29/each) for the price of two ($43/each), consider the 'Extreme'. Otherwise, I'd recommend using the 'Ultra'.

Kingston 2 GB SD Flash Memory Card SD/2GB Review

Kingston 2 GB SD Flash Memory Card SD/2GB
Average Reviews:

I bought this for my Canon digital camera. The camera shoots photos up to 8Megs and does high-resolution video as well. I originally had a 256MB San Disk SD Card in there because that used to be considered a BIG memory card. It worked fine, but I was constantly pulling it out to dump the photos or videos onto my computer so I could take more. At an event where I was taking lots of photos, I would literally run off to dump the card and I would limit my use of the video since it takes a lot of memory.
I finally bought this Kingston card because I saw it on sale. It works fine as well and I can't tell you how nice it is not to have to constantly be worried about whether I've got enough memory left and will miss a photo or video shot! This thing has so much memory that at times when I'd usually be thinking about dumping the data onto my computer I find I can still take hundreds of photos or lots of video (after all, it's about 10x more memory)! This has really been a big improvement for me and I'm really glad I bought it.
With the price of memory these days this card is extremely affordable. If you're working with anything less and/or ever worry about having enough memory in your camera, I would just go ahead an invest in this. It's really worthwhile!
NOTE: I'm writing here about the plain Kingston 2GB SD card. I've noticed Amazon sometimes groups reviews of similar items so you might see this posted under one of the premium or high-speed Kingston 2GB SD card listings. My only comment is that I've never noticed any significant lag or delay using this in my digital camera for either photos or video. If it's there compared to the premium cards, I can't tell the difference. This includes when there are few photos on the card and when the card is almost full. YMMV.

Patriot 8 GB Class 6 SDHC Flash Memory Card PSF8GSDHC6 Review

Patriot 8 GB Class 6 SDHC Flash Memory Card PSF8GSDHC6
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
tl;dr: Fast memory card, get it. Patriot is good. Still awesome after 6 months.
For those of you who are unsure of what card to buy/feel like brushing up on your memory standards:
SDHC was created as a successor to the SD (Secure Digital) and MMC (MultiMediaCard) formats. When the original SD format was created a while ago, its maximum capacity was 2GB. Since flash memory is so cheap now, you'll rarely find any SD card other than the maximum 2GB flavor around anywhere. Enter SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity). SDHC adds two main things to the former SD format:
-More capacity
-A minimum speed rating (aka 'Class x')
8GB is pretty much equivalent to the space of a double-sided DVD. Yeah, an entire double-sided DVD in the size of a stamp. 2000 moderate quality mp3's, 11 CD's, over 1100 12MP photos, and depending on your camera's format anywhere from 30 minutes (MJPEG probably) to 90 minutes (DIVX/MP4) of 720p HD video, over 3 hours of VGA video @ 30fps--it's pretty sweet.
Class is important here if you do any of the following:
-'Burst mode' photography (multiple frames per second)
-Large image file photography (dealing with RAW formats and such)
-30fps videos of any resolution, moreso with HD video
-Use this card as additional storage on your netbook.
This card is rated as Class 6. This means the MINIMUM transfer speeds, ie: reading and writing, happen at a minimum of 6MB/s (that's megaBYTEs not megaBITs per second). I tested this card with a few large file transfers from my laptop, and found the following (EDIT: scroll down a little for updated read/write speeds):
Write: 9.5MB/s avg
Read: 21.9 MB/s avg, 22.2 MB/s max
Access time: 0.7ms
This is fast enough for taking all VGA (640x480) video, about two higher quality 10MP photos every second, and most 720p HD (1280x720) video. It should be ample as extra storage in a netbook, though it's about a third the speed of a notebook hard drive. Class 6 is a sweet spot right now in terms of price/performance. Class 10 is much faster but of course much more expensive, and class 4 isn't that much cheaper IMHO.
A note on capacity: Capacity is measured really stupidly in all digital media storage (hard drives, memory cards, etc). All companies define a gigabyte to be 1000MB, and a megabyte to be 1000kb, etc etc. In reality it's 1024KB per MB, and 1024MB per GB. Not a huge difference, going from 1024 to 1000, right? Well, sort of. This card has a capacity of 8,027,897,896 bytes after formatting (manufacturers will say 'See! Over 8 billion bytes!),' which equates to 7.47GB. When you're wondering where the other 0.5GB went, it's because manufacturer conversions ate it. I hope they're happy. Ah well. Patriot is cool.
Anyways, this card is great. Patriot is pretty awesome with memory, and I see their customer service reaching out to people who have had memory mishaps all the time on here and on Newegg.
Hope this helps some people. Sorry if I confused anyone! Happy, erm, memory-writing?
That is all.::EDIT June 9, 2010::
That it not all! :)
Others have stated this card is slightly thicker than normal. I didn't notice originally but perhaps it's true. I have not encountered a reader/camera/computer where it didn't fit yet, so I'm not sure. FURTHER EDIT: It's the *exact same size* in every dimension (as far as I can tell) as three other SD cards that I have.
A note on read and write speeds that I posted earlier: you will probably see better speeds from your computer than your camera. Here's an updated comparison of its average performance after using the card for a few months:
In my camera:
Read: 6.2 MB/s
Write: 6.6 MB/s
In my computer:
Read: 21.4 MB/s
Write: 10.3 MB/s
Here you see the limitations of a camera's SDHC card controller. What this means is my camera can only talk to the card at a certain speed, but my computer (being more powerful than my camera) can talk to the card much faster. Despite this it's still plenty fast enough for 720p video in my camera. I have a simple point and shoot, so your camera might be different. What's the point of this? Honestly, not much. But I'm sure someone will find it interesting!
So 6 months and thousands of photos and videos later, it's still a fast and reliable card.
::Quick further edit June 12, 2010::
The card is more rigid and more well-built than my older Lexar/SanDisk SD cards. I can't take it apart without destroying it. It's not thicker, either.
*That* is all.

Transcend 16 GB Class 6 SDHC Flash Memory Card TS16GSDHC6E Review

Transcend 16 GB Class 6 SDHC Flash Memory Card TS16GSDHC6E
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the past, I bought a Transcend 8GB SDHC card for my Canon SD1000 camera. I recently bought the Transcend 16GB SDHC for my new Canon SX20IS. Both cards work very well and I've had no problems with it so far. I wanted to take this opportunity to update my review since my original review was also posted (by Amazon) for the 16GB card. This is because the only difference between these two cards is the different capacity. So, if you're in the market for an affordable high quality SDHC card, this may be the one for you. Sorry, I kind of sounded like a used car salesman right there, didn't I? I assure you that I don't work for Transcend. But, here's why I think this card is awesome:
Pros:
-Affordable!
-Large capacity
-Class 6 read/write speed (which is very fast... but is no longer the fastest class available)
-Lifetime warranty (at least that's what the package says :)
-Transcend is a reputable company that's been making memory products for a very long time. ( I swear to the tech Gods that I don't work for them!) Other reputable and reliable memory card companies include Kingston and PNY. All three of these companies have been making memory chips for many, many years.Cons:
- I can' really think of any "Cons" about this card. But here's the 2 closest things I can come up with right now: (1) "Class 6" is no longer the fastest speed available and (2) This card does NOT make coffee for you in the morning, do your dishes for you, give you compliments when you're having a bad day, or magically improve your photography skills.IMPORTANT SPECIAL NOTES ABOUT SDHC MEMORY CARDS:
-SDHC cards are not compatible with most older SD cameras, SD devices, or SD card readers.
-SDHC cards are rated by speed using different "classes". There are currently 4 data transfer speed classes available for SDHC cards. These classes are "class 2, class 4, and class 6, and the new class 10. For example, "Class 2" would have the slowest read/write speed while "Class 6" has the fastest read/write speed. So if you have a device in which speed may play a crucial role, make sure you buy a higher "class" SDHC card. Please note that this SDHC card no longer has the fastest read/write speed available. There is now a new class, called "Class 10". Class 6 has a minimum read/write speed of 6MB/sec... while Class 2 has minimum speed rating of 2MB/sec, and Class 4 is 4MB/sec. Starting to see the pattern? SO WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN "SD CARDS" AND "SDHC CARDS?
SDHC is basically an upgrade to the older SD cards. The reason they upgraded it was to achieve greater data transfer speeds AND capacity than previously possible with normal SD cards... and to do this, they had to redesign the card (which is why it's not compatible with normal SD devices). This was necessary because digital cameras and digital video cameras these days have higher resolutions, which equate to larger file sizes and faster data transfer needs.
Now that many digital cameras also can record HD video, you may consider getting a larger capacity card because video takes much more space than photos. The size of the video varies from camera to camera depending on what resolution and video compression the camera uses. If you plan on taking lots of video (especially HD video), I would consider getting at least a 16GB card. Check your camera specifications to see how many minutes per Gig of memory your camera can capture ...to gauge how big of a memory card you'll want to get to meet your needs.
Special Note on regular SD Cards:
If you primarily take casual photos and don't need a exceptionally fast read/write capable card, you should know that newer cameras that take "SDHC" cards will also work with older normal "SD" cards. These older cards are cheaper than the new SDHC cards, so this may be something to consider. So to sum things up, newer cameras will take SDHC and regular SD cards, but older cameras that use SD cards may not be able to use SDHC cards. This is because newer technology is usually made to be compatible with older technology (the technical term used to describe this is "backwards compatibility") ... but older technology may not have the hardware necessary to run newer tech (technical term used is "obsolete"... just kidding! ;)
I hope I haven't confused everybody by going into this much detail, but I can't help being the nerd that I am. If you are confused, don't hesitate to comment on this post and I will try my best to answer your questions. Also, any feedback is always welcome!
Conclusion: Buy the card if you have a new device that uses SDHC. It rocks! (This message has been approved by the "Duke of New Mexico")

It's a fine product, and it works just fine in products that support the SDHC format. However, be ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN your product (be it a digital camera, memory card reader or--in my case--the Palm T|X PDA which for some STRANGE reason doesn't read it) reads it. Just because your device is new doesn't necessarily mean that it will recognize SDHC cards (as opposed to the older SD cards).
If your device recognizes SDHC cards, then by all means go forth and thrash. You won't find a better card for the price.

The labeling of this item (SanDisk Ultra II 16 GB SDHC card) is very confusing. On the front side it claims a maximum speed of 15MB/sec. At the same time, it is marketed as 'Class-4' (which means a minimum read/write speed of just 4MB/s). To move up to a 'class-6' card from the same manufacturer, you have to buy the SanDisk 16gb Extreme III SDHC card which costs 2-3 times more.
I decided to take a chance with this Ultra II card, even though my new Canon EOS Rebel T1i explicitly requires a 'Class-6' card for video capture. I'm happy to report that the card is fast enough to keep up with my camera, even in burst mode and in 1080 HD video mode.
My own benchmark (see 'Customer Images') revealed that the read speed of this card is consistently fast at 18-19MB/s. But its write speed is strongly dependent on the data file size:
- For small files of 1MB each, the card is only able to write at about 6MB/s. That means it qualifies as a borderline 'class-6'.
- For typical photo files (4-6MB each), the write speed is much faster at around 10MB/s.
- When writing a huge file of 1GB, the card can actually achieve the claimed maximum speed of 15MB/s.
The SanDisk Ultra II may not be a good choice if you want to use it as a ReadyBoost device (frequent writing of smaller file). But when used in digital cameras, this 'class-4' card is just as fast or even faster than other brands of 'class-6' cards (such as the Transcend 16 GB SDHC Class 6, which levels off at 11MB/s for large files). This makes the Ultra II a great value - especially for those people who prefer to stay with a trusted name brand.

Please note that this is a Class 2 card (Class 6 is the current "top of the line"). Class 2 transfers two mega-thingies per second rather than the six mega-thingies per second for Class 6 cards.
This transfer rate is fine for most devices, but takes 3 times as long to copy files back and forth from your computer.
Please also note that older card readers are not able to handle SDHC (HC stands for "High Capacity"). Some card readers are good for only 1 GB, some go up to 2 GB or 4 GB, but only the latest generations are capable of 8 GB.
Lastly, if you are using Windows XP, you may need to either add Service Pack 3 or add a patch before the high capacity card can be recognized by your system.
I recommend adding the patch rather than SP3. Some things haven't been working quite right since I installed the latest service pack from Microsoft - you may not wish to take that chance...
