SanDisk Extreme IV - Flash memory card - 16 GB - CompactFlash Review

SanDisk Extreme IV - Flash memory card - 16 GB - CompactFlash
Average Reviews:

This is my first 16GB card. Previously I have stuck with cards no larger than 8GB, mainly because they are easier on the wallet (though the argument can be made that the 16GB cards are cheaper per GB) and because I am uncomfortable with such a large number of photos being housed on one card. Even with the 5D Mark II RAW files, we're talking 500-600 photos on a card, and with a single failure all of those photos could be gone. I don't mind carrying around a few more cards if I can minimize the lost data if this ever happens to me.
But between a few Extreme III 8GB's, some Ultra II 8GB's, a couple of Lexar Pro 300x 8GB's, and a handful of Extreme III and Ultra II's between 256MB and 2GB, I have not had a single failure on any card yet, knock on wood. And I was about to embark on a photo-heavy trip with the 5D Mark II, so I ordered the 16GB before my flight, to add to my existing stash.
This is a seriously fast card. As has been mentioned, according to the testing done by Rob Galbraith this is the fastest 16GB CF card out there, tied with the Lexar Pro 16GB in RAW transfer speed, and 1MB/sec faster than the Lexar in JPEG transfer speed. It tests slightly faster than my pair of Lexar Pro 300x 8GB cards in RAW transfer, but in real-world terms there is no noticeable difference.
If you're upgrading from Extreme III's, you'll notice the difference: it's on the order of a 25% speed increase. Upgrading from the Ultra II's? That's somewhere around a 350% speed increase over the 8GB Ultra II!!
If you can afford it, get it. You won't be disappointed.

I started using the Ultra II cards and they are rated at about 9MB/sec and they are slow for my shooting style/use. I upgraded to the Extreme III which at the time they were rated at 20MB/s and they worked extremely well. The NEW UPGRADED versions of these cards are rated for 30MB/s, make sure you select these and not the older 20MB/s rated cards as the cost is the same and no harm in getting a little extra for no additional cost. This card is outstanding and have no complaints, considering how much they have dropped in price since they have been released it is a win/win for value/capacity/performance across the board.
Always make sure after downloading your pictures to re-format these cards IN CAMERA before re-using them and they will provide years of trouble free performance. I have dropped them (they have the scars to prove it) and still perform without a problem. For downloading the pictures from the card I recommend the Extreme III card reader, downloading files is a breeze with it!
If you are considering the IV version FIRST make sure your camera can SUPPORT IT (not all cameras can support the speed so it will be a waist of money on your part). You can always order this card from Amazon and if you need more speed then return it or keep as a spare (ALWAYS KEEP A SPARE CARD NO MATTER WHAT!-they can get lost, damaged and running around looking for a memory card on short notice can be a pain.-) and purchase the IV. Keep in mind that you will need a dedicated card reader to be able to download files from the IV at "light-speed" and be able to obtain the maximum benefit from it.

Average Reviews:

Review of Transcend 266X Extreme Speed - Flash memory card - 8 GB - 266x - CompactFlash in a Canon Digital Rebel XTi, Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D and on Windows XP Professional on a Dell Optiplex GX620 and Mac OS X Tiger on a 24" iMac.
Pros:
Rocket ship Fast!
High Image Capacity
Great Price
Absolute reliability so far, no lost photos or formatting problems, NONE!
Cons:
None
The card came preformatted but I found by formatting it with the camera you could get a few extra shots.
Card Use in Windows XP and Mac OS X
What a difference when I downloaded the photos I had taken, mama meia! This thing rocks downloading to both my Dell Windows XP and my 24" iMac!!! It reacts more like downloading from a hard drive. Cut's your download time way down, instead of going to get a drink or take a break you are ready to view your photos in seconds instead of minutes!!
Card use in a Canon Digital Rebel XTi
I have never used any other card beside the Transcend 266X 8 GB in this new Rebel XTi so I don't know how slow or fast it is with another card. But with this card it ROCKS!! My Rebel XTi would in sports mode consistently shoot 30 rapid frames in 10 seconds flat at Large High Quality JPEG before slowing down to store the buffer.
Please note that the higher the ISO setting the lower the number of photos you can store on the camera.
Image Storage Capacity count when in a Canon Rebel XTi set at 100 ISO:
452 RAW + JPEG Large High Quality
804 RAW
2075 JPEG Large High Quality
3974 JPEG Large Medium Quality
3442 JPEG Medium High Quality
6524 JPEG Medium Medium Quality
5974 JPEG Small High Quality
9999 JPEG Small Medium Quality JPEG Small Standard (display only goes to 4 digits)
Card use in a Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D
I noticed little difference in rapid shooting, probably because of the limits of the Minolta 5D it would shoot about 8 rapid fire frames in JPEG Large Extra Fine mode and 16 rapid fire frames in JPEG Medium Extra Fine before slowing because of the buffer.
Image Storage Capacity count when in Minolta 5D at 100 ISO:
635 RAW + JPEG Large Extra Fine
846 RAW
1302 JPEG Large Extra Fine
2286 JPEG Medium Extra Fine
4916 JPEG Small Extra Fine
9143 JPEG Small Fine
9999 JPEG Small Standard (display only goes to 4 digits)
In closing, now I'm going to have to buy a spare battery for my Rebel Xti for those long shoots. I run out of battery power long before I run out of room to store photos. This is especially true when shooting a wedding where in the past I was afraid I would run out of room for shots and I hate changing out cards on the fly as I might miss a great shot. Now it's a no brainer shoot the entire wedding on one card and blaze away no worries!
4-15-2008 Update
I have taken over 20,000 photos using this card on a Rebel XTi and over 6,000 on a Canon 40D without a single error! These cards simply work and they work well. I wouldn't shoot with any other card.
7-24-2008 Update
I have over 30,000 photos on the Rebel XTi with this card and over 20,000 with my new Canon 40D. I've even dropped one from waist high accidentally and watched it bounce. Not a single problem, every photo file is there and undamaged and I'm still amazed at how fast these cards are. And the price now $79!!! What are you waiting for!! I paid over $100 when I first bought mine.

Well, I've seen some dumb things before, but when Amazon allows an afiliate vendor to sell counterfeit ExtremeIV 8GB cards, now that is dumb. Especially, since the vendor was brand new to them (obviously not vetted). I bought the card from these guys just to see if it was going to be fake or not. And sure enough as soon as I got it I called SanDisk and what do you know, counterfeit as a 3 dollar bill. About the only thing that could be dumber is for SanDisk not to find a solution for this problem and lose many potential customers because of the uncertainty. BTW These are really convincing fakes, including the high quality retail packaging, the software included, even a little zipper pouch that says SanDisk on it. Maybe it will be best not to buy expensive SanDisk for some time to come.

Tamrac 5534 Adventure Messenger 4 Camera Bag (Camo/Black) Review

Tamrac 5534 Adventure Messenger 4 Camera Bag (Camo/Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was trying to decide between this bag and a Canon bag for my Canon D SLR Rebel XTi. I'm a geek for digital camo since my husband is deployed, lol. So I took the chance based on other reviews and because I liked the look of it. Once I received it, it was better than I expected.
The bag overall is thicker and more heavy duty than I thought it would be. There is a lot of padding all over and there are removable/adjustable dividers inside so you can place things how you want to best fit your equipment. I can fit my Canon D SLR Rebel XTi camera in the center with a 3 1/2" lens and a 2" hood all connected. With this I can fit my Nikon Coolpix S7c in it's own case inside this case, and there is still room for a large lens or another small digital camera. There is a double zipper large flat pocket in front and another flat pocket in back with a zipper. And in back there is a flat pocket for maybe papers or a thin notebook. There is another flat pocket with a zipper on the top flap where you can store paper or personal items. The closure is a locking/push kind of clip and there is some velcro on the inside for additional holding. The shoulder pad is really nice and thick and has a surface material that prevents slipping off of your shoulder. The strap is adjustable and you can keep the access strap end inside the small side flat pocket. The other side pocket I can fit my Motorola RAZR in it. This brand also makes accessory bags to add to this bag.
Only one little problem with this bag is since it is mostly black, I would not recommend leaving it out in the sun. The top seems to get hot, but as far as I know the padding and thick material still protects everything inside. I just wouldn't leave it out in the sun for long periods of time.
Otherwise this bag is excellent for the price. It holds a lot of camera equipment without being too bulky and has a lot of pockets for materials or personal items. Highly recommended.

I needed more memory before a wedding, and this compact flash card was just what the doctor ordered. I shoot in camera RAW, so of course the files are huge. I really wanted to be able to continue to shoot for much longer without changing cards or downloading. I researched cards, and asked around, and this product always gets rave reviews. I can't believe I didn't get it before...saves SO much time and hassle! Highly recommended for anyone. Would be great on outdoor shoots, vacations, anywhere you'll have many, many photos and don't want to download so often.

Toshiba 8GB High Speed SDHC Memory Card Review

Toshiba 8GB High Speed SDHC Memory Card
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This memory card is compatible only with devices (usually cameras) that can use SDHC, a relatively new high capacity memory card that greatly increases the storage space without changing the size of the card from the maximum 2 GB of regular SD cards. Check your camera/device to make sure you can use this before you spend the money. Otherwise, you'll have to settle for 2GB of SD memory. This card holds tons of 10MP photos -- my camera lists 2000 photos at 9 megapixels, but I've never been able to max it out. If you really use a lot of memory, you may want to consider the pricier (and twice as large) Toshiba SDHC Memory Card - 16GB.
Consumers should shop around for the best price in 8GB SDHC cards since one manufacturer doesn't necessary create a better card than another and since prices often change. As long as you stick with known brands and reputable dealers, you should not have any problems.

I have used many cards with my D200; mostly the 2GB Extreme III version of this card. These are my first Extreme IV series cards in 4GB. My expectations for this card ran something like, same performance as my 2GB cards, maybe a little faster on computer downloads. I was not disapointed.
One interesting little bonus has shown up with these cards and my D200. While shooting on a long trip across Glacier National Park I averaged 700 shots per battery when using these cards. While using the older and slower cards I averaged 400 shots per card. I have shot thousands and thousands of pictures with my 2GB cards and I average between 400 and 500 per battery charge consistantly. This is the first time I have seen 700+ from a single charge on my D200. More shoots are required to establish the actual performance difference but so far there has been a noticable reduction in battery use with this card and the D200.

So to answer the questions to "frenzel" and "Izzybee" none of you two would be able to utilize high transfer speed of this card nor for ie. Lexar's 80x , you are simply limited with your Camera Writes to buffer speed. It is often hard if not possible at all to find that information and Camera Manufacturers do not disclose this information. You can gain the speed for transferring the images from these cards to your computer if you use USB 2.0 or Fire Wire card readers, but that is all the gain you will see, so to gain fast response of your Camera you may need New Cameras that support faster writes to Camera's buffers, something like Nikon D70 or New Canon Digital Rebel 350, I am taking about "Prosumer level" of DSLR's hope this would help...

SanDisk has pulled a fast one on us who are accustomed to the Extreme III & IV series. They've updated the Extreme III series with a new "2008" spec model. Yeah, so what... Well, the 2008 spec Extreme III 16GB CF card is almost twice as fast as the original "20x" Extreme III 16GB CF card in my Nikon D3. In fact, the 2008 16GB model is just marginally slower than my Extreme IV 8GB card in my D3. This speed increase makes a big difference for me when shooting motorsports in RAW mode and hyperactive children. Even crazier still, as of this review, Amazon is selling the 2008 spec Extreme III 16GB card for ~$15 less than this much slower model.
Do yourself a favor before buying one of these cards and see how it will perform in your camera first... google for "Rob Galbraith CF performance database" and look up your camera. Buy intelligently!

Promaster Contour Pro Strap, Black Review

Promaster Contour Pro Strap, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this strap to replace the one that came with my Rebel T1i. The main things I was looking for in a strap were comfort and the ability to sling my camera over my shoulder and carry it by my hip. This strap comes through on these desires and then some.
The total length of the strap is 52 in, not including the extra 1/2 inch used to safely secure straps. If I add in the width of my camera on the straps, this gives me an effective 4.5 Inches. The total circumference of the oval made by this strap can get around ~56 inches. Now, I'm a pretty big guy, I stand about 5' 10" 5' 11" on a good day, But I have a rather barrel chested build, so I tend to wear my strapped items, backpacks, book bags, golf bags, at their extended limit. This strap goes around my body over the should and comfortably rests on my hip. I believe that a skinnier person of great heights could easily wear this strap at the same position. and this strap will probably fit most people including the lovely ladies at heights less than mine.
I believe that it is pretty obvious that I find this strap to be comfortable, I walked for 10 miles the other day with a decent sized 250mm lens and never felt it. The neopream really does a great job at absorbing the weight of the camera system. I doubt it will do anything to help out with my Bigma 150-500mm lens, but I haven't tried it.
As far as the price goes, amazon sells this strap at a reasonable price. I bought mine at a local camera shop. I may have paid twice as much for it, but sometimes it's nice to support the local guys, not that I have ever had a problem with Amazon (as my purchasing history will prove.
This strap does have a nice quick release system for tripod use, now I know that most finer caliber straps have this feature, but to me this was a very nice addition. I was always slightly annoyed by the unused neck strap just sloppily flopped over on it's side while not in use. with this strap I can disconnect the strap easily and quickly from the camera, thread it through a belt loop and reconnect it to securely get the strap out of my way. all that is left are two insignificant straps that I can either let dangle discretely to the sides or better yet reattach them around a secure section on my tripod for added security.
I would love to say that I am as big a fan of the quality as the rest of the features, but one of the straps slipped and came undone before I even had a chance to fiddle with them. if it weren't for some quick hands on my part, I wouldn't be so favorable with this product. I don't know if a kid had messed with mine in the store, I can't imagine Promaster letting this be standard practice, just another reason to shop with Amazon, there Amazon you happy now? I guess this will show me for trying to support the little mom and pop store during a down economy. :)
Overall this is a great product, I have not had a single indecent since that first day, so I know the quality of the product is certainly top notch.

I purchased this card for my 12mp Nikon D300 and have been very pleased with its performance. It has plenty of speed for when I really let the shutter loose, and that's mostly what I was looking for when I purchased it. I recently switched over to shooting RAW (7-9 meg a shot) instead of jpeg (2-4 meg a shot) so I decided to get some extra memory (I already had 1-4Gig and 5-1Gig cards.) I must say, I have not been disappointed. This card is very fast, it out preforms my Ultra IIs and the transfer rate to my computer is amazing when I use this card with the Sandisk Extreme Fire-Wire Reader.
I can put over 1,000 RAW files or about 4,000 jpegs on this card and then transfer them all over to my computer in just a few minutes instead of closer to a half-hour. It seems to average around 1Gig a minute. Using burst mode with my camera has also never been faster, this card writes the images almost instantly, with no noticeable lag time, which means you can basically shoot as fast as you camera can handle and the card will keep up.
I have been using this card for a few months now and have taken several thousand shots with it without any problems. If you have the need and the cash this is a great product.

I'm using this CF card with my Canon 40D. Previously I was using 4gb Lexar 300x cards, (equivalent to about 45mb/sec) which also work just fine, but they're only 4gb each. I found myself wanting more memory and a 3rd card to go between my two camera bodies (other is a rebel xti).
There's nothing at all wrong with this CF card, it works just perfectly. Not even a hiccup. So that's good.
I was hoping to be able to take much longer continuous sequences of photos on the 40D at 6.5 frames/sec. With the Lexar 300x cards I was able to get 15 consecutive images at full resolution raw+jpg before the camera's image buffer filled up. With this card I was disappointed to find that number only rose to 17. I later looked up the stats on the 40D and found that 17 consecutive full res images was the maximum the camera can do anyway, so I know the card is faster than the camera. If I was to get a faster card it wouldn't help me at all.
So, unless you really need to take lots of fast sequences at full resolution raw+jpeg, save yourself the money and get a slower 8gb CF card, like the 15mb/sec 8gb card for $30.
I'm happy with the card though. It won't be holding me back.

Ape Case Pro Large SLR/Video Camera Case ACPRO1400 Review

Holding what it promises.
I purchased this case many months ago. The case is holding up for pro and daily use - still looks like new and is fully functioning. It is the detail and good worksmenship what makes the difference.
At first, I did not give much for the yellow inside color, but found out soon that this is a great idea - you can find everything even in low light. I just came back to this item now, because I need an additional smaller bag. I will try now the small ape case after I made such a good experience with the large bag.
There is one thing I like to complain a bit about.
The small deficiency is the carry strap - very bad strap - has a rubber like shoulder part which is very stiff and uncomfortable - strange, such a good bag with such a bad strap. Nevertheless, I still recommend to buy this bag and recommend to just get another strap for it - easy to find a vast variety and cheap straps - not easy to find such a good camera bag. I bought a "Victorinox Comfort Fit Shoulder Strap" for it which is a bit expensive but the best of the best and truly makes 20 lbs feel like 5 lbs. You can find this strap at Amazone under the above name for about 30 dollars - yes it is a lot of money for a strap but your shoulder is worth the investment - Victorinox is truly the best. The ape case itself is very good and very reasonable priced for the high quality - worth to get a separate strap. I gave anyway 5 stars because this bag is great, looks good, and is holding up to serious daily abuse.
The padding is good and sufficient that I don't worry about my equipment even in a rough environment. In the main compartment, it has enough space for two full size SLR pro size bodies with battery grip - one of them with a larger lens mounted, a flash, and 3 additional large pro lenses. Side and front compartments are large enough to fit all other accessories, charger, cables, light meter etc.. Lot's of space. I use this large bag for bigger jobs like shooting a wedding or certain commercial jobs to have everything with me for all eventualities - my bag has therefore to carry a weight of 28 lbs. It's just a good bag...
