SanDisk 2 GB Extreme IV CompactFlash Card ( SDCFX4-2048-901 ) Review

SanDisk 2 GB Extreme IV CompactFlash Card ( SDCFX4-2048-901 )

PRO: Very Fast, Allows more continuous shots without filling buffer
CON: Expensive
The SanDisk 2 GB Extreme IV CompactFlash Card is so fast, when I held down my shutter release (with Rebel XT set to Raw) for 3 fps continuous shooting, 30 seconds later it was still firing (it may have gone longer, but I just gave up and took my finger off the button). The Rebel XT is only rated for 5 or 6 Raw frames at 3 fps. Apparently, this 40 MB/s card clears the buffer faster than the pictures can fill it up. I also feel very confident that I can take multiple shots in succession even while the camera is set to both Raw and Large/Fine JPEG (at the same time) without worry that the camera will be busy writing to the card. On one outing, I took 101 JPEG pictures (approx. 3.3 MB each) and uploaded them to my PC via the Sandisk Firewire card reader in less than 30 sec (est.). Note that you probably will need the Firewire reader to get the full 40 MB/s upload speed (from your card to your PC). This card costs a bit more than the Extreme III, but it gives a very comforting level of performance overhead.
CONCLUSION: Best memory card available for DSLRs. Worth the money. Get the Firewire card reader if your PC has one of the two provided Firewire plug types. The Firewire connection on the front of my PC was not compatible, but the back one was.

Toshiba 8GB High Speed SDHC Memory Card Review

Toshiba 8GB High Speed SDHC Memory Card

This memory card is compatible only with devices (usually cameras) that can use SDHC, a relatively new high capacity memory card that greatly increases the storage space without changing the size of the card from the maximum 2 GB of regular SD cards. Check your camera/device to make sure you can use this before you spend the money. Otherwise, you'll have to settle for 2GB of SD memory. This card holds tons of 10MP photos -- my camera lists 2000 photos at 9 megapixels, but I've never been able to max it out. If you really use a lot of memory, you may want to consider the pricier (and twice as large) Toshiba SDHC Memory Card - 16GB.
Consumers should shop around for the best price in 8GB SDHC cards since one manufacturer doesn't necessary create a better card than another and since prices often change. As long as you stick with known brands and reputable dealers, you should not have any problems.

I have heard that 32x SD memory performs pretty much as well as the the SanDisk Extreme III cards do.That being the case, you can save about $10-$15 per gigabyte card by purchasing the cheaper 32x offerings.
Then again, SD memory is just becoming the top choice among manufacturers, and even though CF cards are cheap, fast, and durable, they are losing ground to the SD format at a rapid rate. If you have a camera that requires an SD card, get this one. SD will be around for a long time to come, and this card is a generation ahead of all others in terms of speed, and is built to near bullet proof standards. Even if your current camera seems happy with a 32x card, the Extreme III card is four times as fast for just a few more Dollars, and will still be ready to serve when you buy your next generation of digicam. I have two one gig Extreme III cards for my Canon S2 IS digicam, and they have been flawless to date. It is a real treat to know that my digital media can read and write at twice the speed of my current camera, as the SanDisk cards will still be leading edge when I replace the the Canon S2 sometime in the future.
I intend to buy more Extreme III 1 gig cards as time goes by. One gig in still mode is plenty for a two week vacation worth of still shots, but the awesome movie mode on the S2 calls for more memory, and the SanDisk Extreme III delivers the goods in a big way.
One last note. The CF card is the most mature of the lot, even though it is being abandoned by the industry due to it's larger size. Still, it is pretty small overall, and several will fit in your wallet. You can buy an ultra high speed CF card of one to four gig capacity for a song lately. As they get cheaper, buy them. Any cheap $14 card reader will let you use them as storage on your PC or Mac, and they offer great bang for the buck.
If you have a device that requires an SD card though, buy the best on the market. The SanDisk Extreme III is the best you can buy today. Nothing else even comes close.

I highly recommend this battery for many reasons. The most important reasons are, price and durability. This battery is way cheaper than the Nikon version and will outperform the Nikon battery. In today's economy, why spend money that you don't have to? Buy two, they are inexpensive and important to have on hand.

It is NOT a retail package and only ships as just the SDHC memory card in its plastic storage case. Not a big deal until you run into problems; hopefully not.
The retail package includes the following critical items:
1) Lifetime Manufacturer's Warranty
2) Data Recovery Software mini CD (if you accidentally format your card with pictures on it, stop using the card immediately and use this software to recover your lost data!)
Unfortunately, at the time, Amazon did not offer a retail package of this card. You may want to check elsewhere.

I'm using this card (with the associated reader) with my Canon XSI. While the speed of the card exceeds the requirements of the camera, the fast read speed is a real boon when I need to move hundreds of RAW image files to my PC. The included reader is required for this, as the SD reader in my PC cannot handle this SDHC card. Very happy, I love the fast read speed this card supports.

UPDATE: May 13, 2010
I was contacted by an Amazon shopper named Rolla Gravett. He purchased a Transcend class 6 card that could maintain the 4.5fps to 100 shots. It could be a fluke but in the interest of relaying the facts, I'm letting you know that he offered video as evidence of this feat. Neither my Transcend class 6 card or class 10 card will do this.
Please let me know if anyone else has had this observation.Repost 10-28-09
To respond to a request, I've changed the video today and included the test shooting in Raw mode. As you can see I'm not getting the 4.5FPS that I got in fine mode. This was about the same time that I shot 100 images in fine mode. Thank you for your suggestion. I got 56 images in just under 24 seconds. On my Transcendclass 6 card I got 25 shots in the same mode/time. My Transcend Class 10 card captured 37 images. In my opinion this is a much better demonstration of the card's write speed.I have an Nikon D90. I purchased the 8G San Disc Extreme III card 30MB/S and a Transcend 16G class 6 card at the same time. The San Disc Extreme 3 card is incredibly fast. I get 100 pictures (4.5 frames per second) at fine resolution before the camera slows to buffer in 24 seconds. The Transcend card gets 17 photos on the same settings then pauses to buffer and only delivers 25 shots in 24 seconds. The Transcend Class 10 card delivers 66 shots in 24 seconds.
If you have the camera that can take full advantage of this write speed, this fast card is worth the investment. No more cringing while I wait for my camera to clear its buffer so I can take more pictures.
I like to shoot at 4.5 frames. It gives me a lot to pick through when I edit, but a lot can happen in a fraction of a second that can make a photo good or bad. Having the capability to hold down the shutter release and rattle off large bursts of photos is important to me.
I know this test is boring but it is a real world use test. I don't work for San Disc and would consider any other card with this write speed. A word of caution, all class 10 cards are not rated at 30MB/s, they only need to read and write at 10MB/s to be called class 10.
I have found that 8G is a good size for SLR Photography. In my opinion bigger cards are putting a lot of eggs in one basket.
If you have any questions or criticism please comment. I'll redo/repost the test if you can think of a way to make it better.
