SanDisk 32GB Extreme III Compact Flash Card (Retail Package, SDCFX3-032G-A31) Review

I got this 32gb compact flash card just before going on a two week vacation. I captured over 1400 photos at 12meg resolution and had not even used a 1/3 of my storage capacity. There was no slowdown in camera transfer speed and loading the contents into my computer was a breeze. My problem now is having enough batteries charged.
I knew I was taking a chance with this size storage device, but I've used SanDisk for years and never had one of there products fail. If you want to insure you will not run out of storage space, then this is the card for you.

SanDisk Extreme IV - Flash memory card - 16 GB - CompactFlash Review

This is my first 16GB card. Previously I have stuck with cards no larger than 8GB, mainly because they are easier on the wallet (though the argument can be made that the 16GB cards are cheaper per GB) and because I am uncomfortable with such a large number of photos being housed on one card. Even with the 5D Mark II RAW files, we're talking 500-600 photos on a card, and with a single failure all of those photos could be gone. I don't mind carrying around a few more cards if I can minimize the lost data if this ever happens to me.
But between a few Extreme III 8GB's, some Ultra II 8GB's, a couple of Lexar Pro 300x 8GB's, and a handful of Extreme III and Ultra II's between 256MB and 2GB, I have not had a single failure on any card yet, knock on wood. And I was about to embark on a photo-heavy trip with the 5D Mark II, so I ordered the 16GB before my flight, to add to my existing stash.
This is a seriously fast card. As has been mentioned, according to the testing done by Rob Galbraith this is the fastest 16GB CF card out there, tied with the Lexar Pro 16GB in RAW transfer speed, and 1MB/sec faster than the Lexar in JPEG transfer speed. It tests slightly faster than my pair of Lexar Pro 300x 8GB cards in RAW transfer, but in real-world terms there is no noticeable difference.
If you're upgrading from Extreme III's, you'll notice the difference: it's on the order of a 25% speed increase. Upgrading from the Ultra II's? That's somewhere around a 350% speed increase over the 8GB Ultra II!!
If you can afford it, get it. You won't be disappointed.

Well, I've seen some dumb things before, but when Amazon allows an afiliate vendor to sell counterfeit ExtremeIV 8GB cards, now that is dumb. Especially, since the vendor was brand new to them (obviously not vetted). I bought the card from these guys just to see if it was going to be fake or not. And sure enough as soon as I got it I called SanDisk and what do you know, counterfeit as a 3 dollar bill. About the only thing that could be dumber is for SanDisk not to find a solution for this problem and lose many potential customers because of the uncertainty. BTW These are really convincing fakes, including the high quality retail packaging, the software included, even a little zipper pouch that says SanDisk on it. Maybe it will be best not to buy expensive SanDisk for some time to come.

At least one poster indicated that the card in question performed horribly on their Nikon camera. There are compatibility issues (still) between various camera makes and the various compact flash cards and their controllers. Go to http://www.robgalbraith.com and check out the flash speed tests. They are done with about a dozen of the most popular camera types, and you will see that it is a waste of money to get an ultra-fast CF card, if your camera is not built to use it properly. i.e., a fast CF card will not make a slow camera any faster.
Nikon, for instance, has engineered their cameras around Lexar cards, and I've had good success with those cards in my Coolpix 4500. On the other hand, when I tried a Sandisk Ultra (rated fastest in those days) it was slower than the 12X Lexars on that camera.
Nikon now also supports Lexar's proprietary Write Acceleration (WA) technology, but only on more recent, up-scale cameras. Again, a waste of money to buy a 40x WA Lexar card if the camera doesn't make any use of it. At least Nikon publishes a list of tested cards in the back of their camera manuals (unlike Canon). You can also get info on recently tested cards on the Nikon camera tech site.
You should be able to extrapolate to larger size cards from there, but I wouldn't stray from the manufacturers listed there, unless you get a chance to actually check out a card in your camera in a camera store. Don't forget to be nice to the sales folks there, and buy something there, for their time and trouble, instead of saying, "Cool, now I can order this from Amazon!" After all, what good does it do you to save a few bucks on an initial CF purchase, if it doesn't do what you want? Kind of an expensive keychain charm, if you ask me.
I recently got a Canon EOS 300D, and was dismayed to find that Canon support wouldn't tell me what speed or manufacturer of card to use with the camera (I suppose the engineering department used core memory for their tests, for all I know). Since I bought a Digital Rebel before any flash tests with that camera appeared on http://www.robgalbraith.com, I was pioneering. I subsequently discovered that Canon was selling Simpletech 10x cards on their web site as 300D accessories (imagine that 8-), so I ordered a couple from Amazon (*much* better price 8-), and have been happy with them. Not the fastest in the world, but the price was right, and they work OK with camera.
Since then, I've seen the review on http://www.robgalbraith.com (as of 11/28/2003, they had tested with 16 different cameras -- also check out an older survey at http://www.dpreview.com, that may cover your camera), with the Sandisk Extreme topping out the list for the 300D. I ended up here, looking for Extremes, but Amazon doesn't seem to be carrying any. 8-(
Sandisk Ultra II's and the "new" Ultra (see the robgalbraith article) rated very closely to the Extreme, though.
If you have a Digital Rebel (EOS 300D), the Ultra II 512MB should work fine for you. Also, to all those folks that say you can get 100+ photos on a 512MB card, you obviously haven't discovered the benefits of shooting in RAW mode. Of course, if you shoot in RAW, you can't squeeze quite as many shots on a card (about 64, +/-) but it's still about the equivalent of two rolls of film, which is OK in my book.
If you do shoot RAW, do yourself a favor and check out Capture One DSLR Digital Rebel edition (http://www.pictureflow.com/). It's cheap ($49), fast (instant preview of your changes, and you can queue RAW conversions for background processing), and will make working with RAW photos a pleasure. Nothing like being able to fix an exposure problem +/- 2 stops *after* you shoot it, and the 'click here' color balance correction is golden. A RAW file is a lossless compression with 12-bits of data, so if you convert to 16-bit TIFF, you can edit to your heart's content without seriously degrading the image (unlike 8-bit JPEG).
If you have a 300D, you've bought a first-rate sensor and electronics (same as the more-expensive 10D). Don't cripple it by shooting JPEGs. Have fun, and explore what your camera can do.

With fast shooting high mega pixel cameras, the CF card can be a major performance factor. Why have one of these cameras and use a card that cannot keep up? When prices started dropping on CF cards, I decided it was time to get yet another one.
The Extreme III cards write with a 20 MB/sec sequential read/write speed. These fast write speeds are desirable with large image files. There are cameras with buffers to hold images while writing to the card during continuous shots. At some point if the card cannot write fast enough, your camera will stop shooting until the buffer clears enough room.
This card has a high impact rating. For example; if you were to accidentally drop this card 10-foot up to then hit the floor, this card is rated to sustain the fall without damage.
Also consider this card can withstand temperatures from -13 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit (as indicated on the package). Since I live in Texas, I doubt I'll ever have a problem with the card getting too cold. It is nice to know that I could possibly leave the card in a car under the hot Texas sun and it may still work. I've yet to test this scenario, and its unlikely I ever will.
Sometimes the trade off on price comes from power consumption. Lower priced cards may use more power to do the same job as this card. The low power consumption of this card means a longer battery life.
People generally want to know how many images a card will hold. This is a difficult question to answer and greatly depends on both the card and the camera it is used in. The number of images this card will hold on my 20D also depends on the settings used. Let me provide a few settings and image counts for an idea of what this card holds.
Shooting Raw w/ISO 100 - 221 images
Shooting Raw w/ISO 800 - 206 images
Shooting Large jpeg - 479 images
Shooting Medium jpeg - 825 images
Shooting Small jpeg over 999 images (the 20D cannot provide counts above 999)
I use both a 1GB and a 2GB card shooting primarily raw images. Sometimes the 1GB card is more than adequate, but other times I could easily fill the 1GB card quickly. There have been many days where I have taken 200-300 pictures without the opportunity to transfer my images. The 2GB card not only gives me more storage space, but also permits me to change the card in a slow moment before it completely fills up. It is truly aggravating to lose a shot because your card filled up. For these reasons I tend to prefer the 2GB cards. When considering the card size, one should attempt to balance convenience with capacity. Having one card for all your images may be convenient, but it is also putting all your eggs in one basket.
Worried about reliability? The Extreme III cards have a dedicated technical support line (1-866-270-5532). Plus it's backed with a lifetime limited warranty outside Europe. The warranty excludes any defects, malfunctions, performance failures or damages to the card resulting from use in other than its normal and customary manner, misuse, accident or neglect; or improper alterations or repairs.
If something should go wrong, this CF card comes with the Rescue Pro recovery software. Fortunately I have had no need for the software. For that purpose I cannot give much comment on its usefulness.
Overall, I do not notice the benefits of this cards speed over the Ultra II when used with the 20D. The other benefits between this and the Ultra II are not necessarily a big plus for me. I like having the recovery software, so for the few extra dollars I am happy. With a big price difference, I would definitely stick with the Ultra II.
If the temperature ratings or the Rescue Pro recovery software is an important feature for you, the Extreme III is the card to get. Otherwise, consider purchasing the Sandisk Ultra II CF Card and save some cash.
PROS:
Reliable
Fast read/write
Impact resistant
Low power consumption

Wow! This puppy is FAST! I've used it in two cameras with great results. It's hard to believe what a difference the 12x speed makes. I'm an old 35mm photographer so I get very frustrated with the 'digital delay' - this card has really helped. I also love all the storage space. Now I don't have to feel like I'm sacrificing speed for space. Lexar has built a great reputation for quality and speed, and they've come through once again!

Lexar Media's high-speed digital film helps your camera capture images faster, so you spend more time taking pictures and less time waiting on your camera. Lexar's CompactFlash cards are individually speed rated so you know the minimum capability of the card. Lexar uses the same rating system used by the CD-ROM industry, where a data transfer rate of 1x equals 150 kilobytes per second (KBps). The higher the speed rating, the faster your camera will be able to write images to the memory card.
For professional shooters who need immediate confirmation they've captured the shot or who want to identify accurate exposure levels or bracketing range, Lexar's patented 12X speed (1.8 MBps) transfer rate makes the card ideal for fast-paced applications such as photojournalism, sports, and fashion. And Lexar's solid-state design provides reliability in harsh shooting environments, mandated by professionals throughout the world.
The Digital Film Compliance seal assures you that your Lexar Media digital film is 100 percent compatible with your CompactFlash digital camera. It can also be used in all other digital devices that support the CompactFlash format, such as PDAs, video recorders, and MP3 players. All Lexar Media CompactFlash cards meet the CompactFlash Association's specifications and are marked with the CF+ symbol.

I have my cannon S100 for six months now. The camera is so small that I take it anywhere I go and take pictures of everything. And I mean EVERYTHING.
When you go here and there taking pictures there are two things that can stop you happy travel: Battery life and storage space.
This card cross over any storage limits you could have.
Let me tell you a few words about
this little fellow:
1. Sandisk is known for its great compatibility so it isn't ikely that you will have compatibility problems
2. Used with my cannon S100 Digital Elph it can hold:
- 1550 pics in low resolution Hard to beat for Web publishing or e-mailing
- 420 pics in medium resolution. This resolution is really good for prints up to 5 x 7
- 170 pics in high resolution. Pretty good for one single card. Outstanding prints up to 8 x 10
3. No problems with speed. Sandisk cards are as fast as any other.
In my experience 170 pictures at resolution for prints of 8x10 is enough for a complete weekend of pictures, but if you feel you are running out of space you just change to medium resolution for prints up to 5x7.
With this card you can forget the frustrating experience of running out of space in the sunset of Sunday the weekend you decided to expend in the beach.
You won't find this card at this very good price anywhere else, so go for it

233x is the READ speed, as opposed to write speeds. I contacted the manufacturer and the WRITE speed is only 16MB/sec. 133X cards have 20MB/sec speed. As you can see, this Ridata card is performing below 133X speed as write speed is concerned. Also, you need to send this card to the manufacturer AT YOUR OWN shipping cost to get the firmware upgraded to get the problem fixed as stated at manufacturer's website, ww w. ritekusa . co m:

I have used many cards with my D200; mostly the 2GB Extreme III version of this card. These are my first Extreme IV series cards in 4GB. My expectations for this card ran something like, same performance as my 2GB cards, maybe a little faster on computer downloads. I was not disapointed.
One interesting little bonus has shown up with these cards and my D200. While shooting on a long trip across Glacier National Park I averaged 700 shots per battery when using these cards. While using the older and slower cards I averaged 400 shots per card. I have shot thousands and thousands of pictures with my 2GB cards and I average between 400 and 500 per battery charge consistantly. This is the first time I have seen 700+ from a single charge on my D200. More shoots are required to establish the actual performance difference but so far there has been a noticable reduction in battery use with this card and the D200.

The other reviews make no sense. One says the product is flawless then awards one star. That doesn't add up. The other says the product is great and marks it down for slow shipping. The shipping speed has nothing to do with the product. I ordered mine from Amazon using Prime and it arrived super fast.

I have one of these for use in a Nikon Coolpix 995 digital camera.
At the highest resolution, 2048x1536, you can average about 100 shots on the card before you have to start deleting pics to free up space.
Who needs such a huge card? Well, I prefer to use a larger CF card and take the highest-rez pic possible, rather than play around adjusting resolutions out in the cold and rain. Who knows - you may get that 'killer pic' you want to blow up to 11x14, and only realize it once you're back at your computer! You can always rescale a picture down later.
With this card, I can go on vacation and take a week's worth of pics, no problem, no fussing around with swapping cards. This card is great!

I recently bought a Canon Digital Rebel. When considering memory I initially figured I'd stick with the brand I used with my PowerShot S30: Viking Components. But I wanted the best, knowing that my 6.3MP photos would take longer to be recorded.
I looked at the Lexar 40x first. Lexar has a good reputation and "40x" sounds like a snappy number. For some reason, though, I liked the feedback about this [Sandisk Ultra] card more. So I bought this one and am very glad I did.
Little publicized is the fact that the Sandisk Ultra II blazes along at 60x (9 Mb/s) write speed. That translates to being able to record one more whole image per second than the Lexar, and two or three images more than SimpleTech or Viking Components. (Each card reads at the same speed, I believe -- 10 Mb/s.)
Worried about a trade-off in reliability? It's backed with a 5-year warranty. You can't go wrong with that, folks.

So to answer the questions to "frenzel" and "Izzybee" none of you two would be able to utilize high transfer speed of this card nor for ie. Lexar's 80x , you are simply limited with your Camera Writes to buffer speed. It is often hard if not possible at all to find that information and Camera Manufacturers do not disclose this information. You can gain the speed for transferring the images from these cards to your computer if you use USB 2.0 or Fire Wire card readers, but that is all the gain you will see, so to gain fast response of your Camera you may need New Cameras that support faster writes to Camera's buffers, something like Nikon D70 or New Canon Digital Rebel 350, I am taking about "Prosumer level" of DSLR's hope this would help...

SanDisk has pulled a fast one on us who are accustomed to the Extreme III & IV series. They've updated the Extreme III series with a new "2008" spec model. Yeah, so what... Well, the 2008 spec Extreme III 16GB CF card is almost twice as fast as the original "20x" Extreme III 16GB CF card in my Nikon D3. In fact, the 2008 16GB model is just marginally slower than my Extreme IV 8GB card in my D3. This speed increase makes a big difference for me when shooting motorsports in RAW mode and hyperactive children. Even crazier still, as of this review, Amazon is selling the 2008 spec Extreme III 16GB card for ~$15 less than this much slower model.
Do yourself a favor before buying one of these cards and see how it will perform in your camera first... google for "Rob Galbraith CF performance database" and look up your camera. Buy intelligently!

A-DATA Turbo 32 GB CompactFlash Memory Card ACF32G533XR Review

A-DATA Turbo 32 GB CompactFlash Memory Card ACF32G533XR

I bought this memory card instead of the SanDisk Extreme III 32GB CF card, so I could also buy a secondary Canon LP-E6 battery for my new camera for about the same money. Trust me, the battery will run out before this memory was filled with pictures (in the high-quality JPEG format only, not in RAW).
This CF card seems to be fast enough for my 21.1MP camera. Shooting in RAW format in the burst mode can last for 12 shots before it gets slowed down. I also shoot 1080p video with this card and I had no issue. The video look smooth during playback. In compared to my old 2GB SanDisk Extreme II CF card, the video was "bumpy". I copied the MOV files to my computer in both video playback cases, so I believe the issue was caused by the slower rerecording speed of the 2GB card.
I also bought an inexpensive memory card reader that supports UDMA, "Kingston 19-in-1 USB 2.0 Flash Memory Card Reader FCR-HS219/1" to speed up the files transfer time. They worked well together, and you may see my other review at Amazon.com for this memory reader for details.

Just as the title says, it is expensive, but worth it.
Newer cameras take up more and more space. If you shoot RAW with a 12 mpix camera, you might consider this card.
As for customer service, I've had a SanDisk card go bad (An 8 GB, not this 32GB one) and got a replacement quickly.
