Minolta Maxxum HTsi Plus 35mm SLR Camera Kit w/ 28-80mm Lens Review

Minolta Maxxum HTsi Plus 35mm SLR Camera Kit w/ 28-80mm Lens
Average Reviews:

I made my choice of the HTsi Plus after a comprehensive search of the various SLR bodies, weighing their features and their reviews in camera magazines. Within its price range, the HTsi principally competes with the Canon EOS Rebel 2000 and the Nikon N60, both of which are excellent cameras, but which lack the full panoply of features found on the HTsi Plus. For example, the HTsi plus combines Bulb exposure (the ability to hold the shutter open manually), remote shutter control, 1/4000 maximum shutter speed, a full shutter-priority mode, and a well-respected 14-segment light meter. As with the Canon and Nikon, the HTsi's body is plastic, an aspect about which some photographers express reservations, but the plastic seems extremely durable, and remember that a light camera is a joy to carry (and if you do not carry the camera, you are never going to get those perfect but fleeting shots). The only thing missing on the HTsi is a depth-of-field preview feature, which is available on the Canon. Were it not for that, I would find little future need to upgrade. Regardless, for an amateur just getting into photography again, the HTsi has been perfect.
For adaptability, the HTsi has three essential levels of complexity. Use P mode for fully automatic snapshots -- great for when you need someone else to take your picture. Use the Creative Exposure Mode for a bit more customization and to adjust it to one of five situations (portrait, landscape, close-up, sports, and night). Finally, use either the Aperture-Priority, Shutter-Priority, or fully manual modes to bring out the real photographer in you. After all, playing with f-stops and shutter speeds is where the fun of photography is anyway. I admittedly spend most of my time in this last mode, but the flexibility is highly appreciated (sometimes, one just does not have the time to fuss with dials).
The results from the HTsi have been fabulous. The flash seems to respond well to the darkest of conditions, and the 28-80 zoom lens offers the flexibility needed for a budding photographer. My only criticism is that the autofocus can be slow to respond in some lighting conditions. So far, I have taken rolls of photos for my organization, and everyone seems impressed with the results. I also bought a set of Tiffen close-up filters for doing macro photography, and the results have been quite stunning.
A final word. Amazon offers one of the best deals on the Net with service and peace-of-mind that you simply cannot beat. Believe me, I checked. I tried one of those mail order camera stores that advertise ultra low prices. By the time they "upgraded" me to what they viewed was an acceptable camera and charged me their exorbitant shipping fee, the price was higher than here. And guess what? Amazon's package already had all of those so-called "upgrades" -- without the hassle. Thanks Amazon!

This camera has so many great features. The feature that allows a quick zoom out to re-align your subject while using the 35X zoom is placed in an awkward place. It is very easy to hit this button when shooting and it changes your focus for a bit and you have to be careful where your hand placement is on the camera. It can produce noisy photos in low light unless you use a tripod and carefully choose settings. I have only got to use the camera for short time, but so far I am happy with it!

A PowerShot with an Extreme Zoom. The PowerShot SX30 IS has got you prepared for your next extreme photo opportunity. This point-and-shoot digital camera comes with a massive 35x Wide-Angle (24-840mm) Optical Zoom lens - a first for any PowerShot! It also comes with a 2.7-inch Vari-angle LCD, 14.1 Megapixels, High Dynamic Range, Zoom Framing Assist and much more. Canon's first high-powered 35x Wide-Angle Optical Zoom (24-840mm) with Optical Image Stabilizer reduces camera shake to achieve amazing images whether you are up close or far away. The PowerShot SX30 IS is equipped with a 35x Optical Zoom lens with a focal length of 4.3 - 150.5mm (35mm equivalent: 24 - 40mm) that allows you to shoot any scene from wide-angle to telephoto. The camera uses a VCM (Voice Coil Motor) for high-speed, quiet, energy-efficient lens movement with precise control. Focal length is conveniently indicated on the lens barrel. The lens is optimized to fully exploit its zoom length and wide shooting angle in concert with the camera's high 14.1 Megapixel resolution. UD glass effectively suppresses chromatic aberration, while enhanced negative refractive power ensures that distortion at the wide-angle is also corrected. Further aberration is controlled with the inclusion of a double-sided aspherical glass-molded lens and ultra-high refraction index lens. The SX30 IS is equipped with Canon's acclaimed Optical Image Stabilizer Technology that automatically detects and corrects camera shake - one of the leading causes of fuzzy or blurred shots. Even when zoomed in, you can get the steady, crisp, brilliant images you'll be proud to shoot and share. And Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer Technology is convenient to use. It functions perfectly with or without a flash. Improvements to Movie modes: Dynamic mode enables users to use the Optical Image Stabilizer while shooting video in the wide-angle setting, and the Optical Zoom is now available while shooting video. Dynamic IS all...

This kit is all I wanted for. The camera works great and fits all my standards but the whole kit is very useful. I hate when I have to buy a case for separate or even the memory card so it made it very convenient. The only stupid thing was the 25 free pictures which would only work if you live in Brooklyn because the shipping to Boston is more than the pictures itself.

I got this warranty for my husband camera for Christmas. They were very timely with e-mailing the warranty, mailing the copy to me, and then calling to ensure that we had received the warranty and everything was ok! So far so good!
I also give them a thumbs up for not mentioning anything for what the camera was for (since my husband ended up picking up the call).

Fujifilm Finepix S2 Pro 6.17MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only) Review

Fujifilm Finepix S2 Pro 6.17MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Fulifilm Finepix S2 Pro improves greatly on the S1. I shoot very heavily with this camera, several thousand photos a week and beat the hell out of it. Having the Nikon constructed N-80 body helps with it's ruggedness, but it is not as sturdy as the D1-X, however it does capture 12.1 Million MegaPixels. I recommend setting the custom white balance often when attempting to shoot in various lighting conditions to insure optimum accurate colors, otherwise colors may lean toward the red. Also, do not trust what you see in the lcd, believe the metering, the display will tend make you want to push a few stops, which is fine if that is the look you are going for, but at first I blew out alot of shots. The ability to use all of my Nikon lenses is a plus, and there are plent of features to play with, so get a big memory card.
For the price most digital SLR's cannot touch the file sizes you can get with the S2. This camera is almost perfect, except....
IT EATS BATTERIES, EAT'S 'EM! The camera takes 4 AA's in the loading tray,(which is not the strongest of plastic things I have ever seen and cannot believe that I have not broken it while rushing to trade batteries out on a shoot) and 2 $ 123 lithium ions. On a full day shoot I go through at least 2 sets of the lithiums and usually 3 with AA(I do always leave it set to LCD previewwhich can be shut off to save juice). If I use a flash or hook it to any lighting equipment, even worse. They make a fairly expensive power pack for the camera, but for the locations I work in that is not always ideal.
Final word cool Professional camera, despite the batteries, but you get more than you pay for in image resolution and picture quality.

The FinePix S2 Pro is the second-generation professional-body SLR to feature FujiFilm's next generation Super-CCD sensor system for professional photography. The FinePix S2 offers a full feature set that's perfect for professional photographers, including a resolution of 6.17 million effective pixels and compatibility with Nikon F-mount lenses as well as a majority of Nikkor AF lenses.
Optics and Resolution The 6.17 million effective pixels translate to 12 million recorded pixels (4,256 x 2,848), or a 4.5 MB file size, due to Fuji's Super CCD (see below for more info). The FinePix S2 Pro has a Nikon F mount and accepts every AF Nikkor and most manual AI or AI-S Nikkor lenses. In addition, the camera has shutter speeds of 30 seconds to 1/4,000 second, and continuous shooting of approximately 2 frames per second, up to a total of 7 frames. Its wide range of ISO equivalents of 100/160/200/400/800/1,600 allow for picture taking under a variety of challenging lighting conditions.
Fuji's Super CCD Instead of conventional CCDs with square photodiodes and pixel arrangements, Fuji’s Super CCD has octagonal-shaped photodiodes and pixels situated on 45-degree angles. This "honeycomb" pattern increases sensitivity, allowing pixels to be efficiently packed at maximum density. The area of the photodiode in a half-inch Super CCD with 2 million pixels is about 1.6 times as large as the area offered in the conventional CCD with the same number of pixels. The Super CCD improves overall signal-to-noise ratio and offers a much wider dynamic range.
Storage and Transfer The S2 Pro offers a dual-media approach to storage: SmartMedia and CompactFlash Type II memory cards (offering compatibility with optional Microdrives, which can provide up to 1 GB of storage). It also incorporates dual PC connectivity, via typical USB 1.1 or super-fast IEEE 1394 (FireWire).
More Features The FinePix S2 Pro boasts a variety of controls, including four shooting modes (single frame, continuous, preview, and multiple exposure), four exposure modes (multiprogrammed AE, shutter-priority AE, aperture-priority AE, and manual exposure) and five variable program modes (portrait, landscape, close-up, sport, and night scene). In addition, there are nine modes for white balance (auto, fine, shade, incandescent light, two custom settings, and three for fluorescent light).
The sharp, bright 118,000 pixel, 1.8-inch LCD monitor provides image review and menu control display; a protective LCD cover is included.
Other features include:
Built-in, pop-up flash with five settings
External flash hot shoe and sync socket for connecting up to two external flash units
Video-out jack for reviewing images on a television set
Variable self-timer

Power, Size, and Contents The camera is powered by four AA batteries (alkalines included, but NiMH rechargeables recommended). It measures 5.6 by 5.2 by 3.1 inches and weighs 26.8 ounces. This package includes the FinePix S2 digital camera; four AA and two CR123 batteries; USB, FireWire, and AV cables; eyepiece cap, body cap, and LCD cover; and CD-ROM with FinePix viewer, Video Impression, Adobe PhotoShop Elements, and Raw File Converter LE.

The main function of the lens hood is to shade the lens from stray light, improving your contrast and image quality. But it will also protects the front barrel from the inevitable impacts against walls, door frames, and other real-life obstacles and in inclement weather, it can assist in keeping moisture or wind-blown debris off the lens. The advantage of the petal shape design is, that it offers the same prevention of flare as the corresponding circular or rectangular design, but with a smaller size and a lighter weight. My wife and I have owned many digital cameras and find this the best one we have ever owned. Apparently it's a new generation. It is so automatic it makes it really easy to use. It automatically detects the photo type you are taking and lets you know - scenery, cuisine, closeup, etc. The smile feature is fun. Face detection with exposure correction really works. It's compact, boots up quickly and has little or no delay when taking a picture. The 12MB picture really captures detail. We love this camera but may buy another brand for my wife when the time comes just because I like to experiment.

I bought my wife a camera for Christmas this year and was looking for a sturdy case that would protect it and had enough room for some storage. This case is one strong case and has enough room for storing an extra ram card and battery. I basically wanted something that she could grab and throw in her purse with our having to worry about damaging the camera. This case was the answer. I looked at several other cases, but this one really stood out from the pack. It is extremely tough, and will protect the camera inside.

I forgot my high end camera while out of town . Bought this since it was relatively cheap and easy to use. Got better than expected results. The pics where clear. Only needed to adjust contrast on my PC which is typical for photos taken with digital cameras. The menus are straight forward. The camera comes with a strap and two alkaline batteries. Took about 98 photos before the battery died. Recommend long life lithium batteries as replacements. The hand grip is small., so keep the strap on the wrist incase the camera slips. Small grip allows an easy fit into purse or pocket. I bought a 1 gig SD memory card to replace the small card that came with the camera. The battery will die before you fill up this card. The camera is slow to take the photo and store it to memory, so patience is needed or the photos will come out blurry from moving the camera while it is still processing the photo. Again, this is typical of low priced digital cameras. I highly recommend this for first time users who don't want to spend a lot. Expect to exercise patience as the camera saves the photo to memory.

Lowepro Apex 110 AW (Black) Review

Lowepro Apex 110 AW (Black)
Average Reviews:

I really like this pack, using it for my Canon SX10IS currently. It has lots of room (although if you have a longer lense or big flash they probably wont fit) for both the camera and accessories. Along with the camera I can fit 2-3 packs of AA batteries, several memory cards, an SD card reader, the Nikon Lens Pen cleaning system, and a few other small items.
It's very durable, and the cushy shoulder strap makes it good for longer excursions. I feel very comfortable that my camera is secure and safe inside it (lots of padding). The all-weather cover is also a really nice feature, although you have to detach the shoulder strap in order to put it on, which can be pretty annoying. Also note that you wont be able to access anything in the bag once the weather cover is on.
The little micro-fiber lens cloth inside is also a nice feature to have, as well as the various pockets.
The way it zips up can make it a bit awkward to use at times (especially if you are trying to do it one-handed).
My only other complaint is that the form-factor (essentially a box) can make it kind of awkward and cumbersome as compared to other packs. It sticks out a lot from your body and can feel a bit bulky and uncomfortable since it doesn't always contour very well to your back or side. It's a bit like having a lunch box strapped to you. The padding on it makes this not too much of a problem though and I wouldn't call it a deal breaker. Note that the meshed surface on the back of the bag will mess up some shirts by rubbing against them and causing lots of "pills."

I received my camera and immediately started taking beautiful photos. The menu is easy to follow and I like the scene option and quality of the display. I had compared it to the Sony DSCS70 with the Carl Zeiss lens and it was about the same in price and features, but I went with Nikon for their optics and menu options thining that I would spend the same amount of money. As well, I ordered the CoolPack for "all" coolpix 700, 800 and 900 series cameras. To my dismay the batteries that come with the CoolPack are not compatible with the 880 and the lens filters are not compatible either (I am assuming a step down ring is needed). I promptly returned it. I ordered a 64MB compact flash card for about $100. I took about 40 nice photos and kabam - the lithium ion batter was drained (it comes with a disposable battery). Each battery costs $12-13. Since I intend on taking many photos, I have opted to spend the extra $120 and order the re-chargeable battery, charger and small case. This is a hefty add on fee for what all the other digital camera's of the same price range come with standardly. The autofocus makes a rather loud noise. At first I was worried since it does not sound like it is a smooth moving part inside (lots of friction sounds), but I called tech support and was told this is normal for the camera to make these sounds. The lady at Nikon was professional and courteous, and hopefully correct in her information! All in all, I expect to take lots beautiful pictures very easily, but if you are not willing to invest about $1100 including the camera and accessories, then this may not be the camera for you. If the camera had come with the battery, charger and protective cover/case I would have given this a 5 star review.

With the Coolpix 880, Nikon has taken the 3.3-megapixel CCD and many ofthe advanced features from its semiprofessional 990 model and put them into atraditional compact point-and-shoot design simple enough for anyone touse.
The Nikkor all-glass lens features a 2.5x optical zoom (equivalent to 38- 95mm on a 35mm camera) with a macro mode that focuses down to 1.6 inches. A 4xdigital zoom further increases magnification at lower resolutions. Images arestored on a Type I CompactFlash card (8 MB card included). Maximum imageresolution is 2,048 x 1,536 pixels, and an uncompressed TIFF mode is available(remember, however, that uncompressed images are so large that you'll need abigger memory card to store even one full-resolution uncompressedimage).
Though the camera defaults to full-auto point-and-shoot mode, it has ahost of manual features for advanced photographers. In addition, Nikon hasincluded 11 special modes in which the camera is automatically programmed withthe appropriate settings for specific situations like sunsets, beaches, nightportraits, and extreme close-ups. For example, switch the camera to itsparty/indoor setting, and it will slow down the shutter and use a slow-synchflash with red-eye reduction.
The 880 is Nikon's smallest digital camera, withoverall dimensions of only 3.9 by 3 by 2.1 inches, and weighs only 9.7 ounceswithout a battery.
Power is provided by either a disposable 2CR5 lithiumbattery (included) or an optional rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Forenvironmental and economic reasons, we strongly recommend getting therechargeable battery kit for anything more than occasional use.
Image transferis quick and easy with the included USB cable. If you have an older computerwith only a serial port, the Coolpix 880 also supports serial image transfer(though you'll need to purchase the serial cable separately). The camera shipswith an impressive software suite that includes Genuine Fractals 2.0 LE for filecompression and scaling, Cumulus 5.0 demo for image management, and Great Photo!for image manipulation and correction.

The camera is light and tiny but still very comfortable to hold with the built in grip on the side of the camera (unlike Canon's Elph cameras). The 3x zoom range on the lens is unheard of in a camera this small!
What sets the camera apart is Nikon's exposure metering system and the scene modes. It uses Nikon's renowned sophisticated metering system to get the perfect exposure for nearly every shot. In addition, it has seven scene modes for common situations where the metering may be fooled (backlight, landscape, beach/snow, sunset, portrait, party/indoor, and night portraits). This is great for the novice that doesn't want to mess around with complicated manual exposure adjustments.
The 2-megapixel CCD is plenty for getting great 8x10 prints. You'll want to purchase a larger compactflash card because the included 8 MB card will definitely be too small to take more than 15 photos at the highest quality and resolution.
It comes with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and battery charger which many other digital cameras in this price range leave out.
Compared to the Canon cameras I have used, the colors are much more natural, especially for skin tones. The Nikons seem to go for the more natural colors as opposed to many cameras that go for more saturated and punchy colors
If you're looking for a camera with a ton of manual features (saturation control, aperture and shutter priority, full manual control, etc.) then you need to step up to the Coolpix 995, which costs twice as much.
I would definitely recommend the camera to the user that is looking for a great, easy-to-use, point and shoot digital camera that takes awesome photos for printing up to 8x10 photos or just digital photos to share.

(I gave it 4 stars because it was so hard to setup, otherwise it would have gotten 5)
I called tech support and read through every page of the manual and still couldn't figure it out - and I'm a tech guru! No one at Nikon tech support was very helpful (probably because it's still kind of new), they just kept emailing me the manuals.
Anyway, here's the mystery setup instructions:
(before anything - you need to setup a wifi connection - the nikon instructions are fine for this part. either use a publicly available hotspot or your home wireless router, plug in the password if there is one)
1. In the camera, setup your alias and email address. It's hard to figure out which character is the period (it looks like a comma rather than a dot midway up).
2. Take a photo and send it to anyone - preferably yourself.
3. Not only should you receive a copy of the photo to your email account, but Nikon Connect2 service will send you a series of email messages with the instructions to register for the connect 2 service. Without registering, all the other wifi features won't work
NOTE - if you don't get the series of email instructions but you do get the photo, then you entered the sender's address incorrectly but entered the recipient address correctly.
If you don't get any emails - then both addresses are incorrect.
4. Follow the instruction to setup the connect2 service. Without doing this, you can't link to your flickr account and you can't get access to the other connect2 features.
5. Once you've setup the connect2 account, login and you'll see the photo you just sent. Select it and click the flickr button. A pop-up window will appear and ask you for permission to link to your flickr account.
If you don't have a flickr account - I think you will be prompted to create one. After you've created the flickr account, login to the flickr account in a separate explorer window or firefox tab. Then go back to the connect2 website (in the previous window/tab) and click the flickr button again.
A popup window will ask you for permission to link your connect2 account to flickr. After you authorize it, your camera is now registered with your flickr account.
6. Now, from the camera, take a photo. Upload the photo to the email address "flickr" and it will automatically go to the connect2 website and be transfered to flickr.
Not so hard, right? Yeah right.
Actually, my hang up was that I didn't realize that i had typed in my senders email incorrectly so I never got the further instruction for registering the connect2 website. Nothing in the manual or supplemental manuals (there are 3 total) explained that the last bit of instructions would come via email. Not even the Nikon technical support website or FAQ's explained that there was a huge chunk of instructions missing - pending the receipt of the email notifications...
Anyway, I hope I saved someone some grief. Enjoy your new camera!

Nikon Coolpix 3200 3.2MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom Review

Nikon Coolpix 3200 3.2MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom

(More customer reviews)
I've had my coolpix 3200 for about a week, and am really surprised at how good the pictures are, how easy it is to get the pictures into my PC, and how long the batteries last. I bought Duracell rechargeables with the camera, told my camera that these were the batteries I was using through its menu system, and have been taking pictures for a week on the same batteries. That's more than 80 pictures -- perhaps more -- all on the same 2 batteries, most of them using a flash. My battery charge meter has not even shown up yet.
When I first read the manual, I didn't understand the value of all the frame, portrait, and scene assist modes. As I've used the camera, though, I've come to see that they are very important. The frame and portrait assistants actually change the location of the auto-focus. When I am in sports mode, the camera's auto-focus is constantly changing so that the picture will shoot quickly when the shutter release is pressed. Shutter speed and aperature are adjusted depending on which scene I've selected. In other words, using the modes makes for much better pictures. They are more than just marketing pitches.
The software that came with the camera is okay, though it is nothing earth shaking. Better tools came with my scanner/copier/printer combo, but if you don't have those tools, what comes with the camera is much better than nothing and will get the job done.
I'm very satisfied. The camera is so small that I wear it in a tiny case on my belt all the time.
BTW, I was going to buy the 2200 instead, but am glad that I didn't. Once I had the manual (which is the same for both cameras), I saw that there are a number of small features that the 3200 has that are not available to the 2200. For example, the 3200 has sound for movies, the 2200 does not. You can record voice memos and set sounds for camera functions with the 3200. The 3200 can take more continuous pictures at a time (due to the higher resolution and space required). There are more differences, and most of them are small, but by the time you add them all up, it's worth the additional $100, in my oppinion.
I was an avid amateur photographer back "in the day", but grew tired of the hassles of large cameras and film developing. Thanks to this tiny, filmless camera, I'm a photographer again.
