I have several camera bags and camera holsters, and didn't really need another one, but when the Toploader Zoom 55 was available for about $25, it was too cheap to pass up.
This case like most Lowepro gear is well made, with some neat design elements, though it does fall a little short in the quality and materials departments. The type of ballistic nylon isn't as thick or strong as what Tamrac usually uses, but it's good enough to last for a while.
The amount of padding is substantial on the back and sides, but a bit thin on the front. Lowepro's standard zipper pull tabs work well, for a case that is usually carried upright. At about 11 inches deep, the holster will conveniently accommodate my 7D with an 8 inch telephoto zoom lens attached. The case is too small for a SLR with a battery grip, for that capability you will have to go up to the Zoom 75.
There are provisions on both sides for SlipLock components, so you can easily add a lens case. There is also a belt loop, and carry handle on the top cover. There is a decent sized zippered pocket on the front, that is big enough to hold a Canon 580EX II flash with case. The black nylon material has some basic water resistance, but an additional slip on weatherproof cover is provided in a slip pocket on the backside of the case.
The Inside of the case is very basic. There is a zippered compartment on the underside of the flip-up lid for small accessories. Inside there is a Velcro attached removable divider. The divider can be used to create a separate compartment, if you have a shorter lens.
The Toploader 55's weakest link (literally), are the four plastic links for attaching the strap, that are located at four corners of the holster. The included carrying strap has plastic clips. For a case designed for cameras with a heavier lens, using plastic, instead of obviously stronger metal parts, seems a very questionable decision at best. While plastic may not immediately fail, it just isn't a good feeling putting thousands of dollars in camera gear at risk, because Lowepro wants to skimp on quality and save a few bucks. This borderline negligence doesn't seem important to other reviewers, but to me it merits at least a one star deduction.
The support provided by the strap system is pretty good, providing some versatility in how the case can be carried. However, it's hard to feel confident and secure, when the thin plastic loops are rubbing against the weak plastic clips on the strap. Who knows when, but given enough use or sufficient stress, sooner or later, one of the plastic parts will fail, perhaps with disastrous results. This possibility makes the case a little hard to recommend to someone that plans to use it all the time, instead of just occasionally, as I plan to do.
I generally prefer Tamrac gear, but they don't make a case this large. The options at this size are somewhat limited, but if the plastic parts are not a major concern, this is a solid buy at the $25 level. I'm not aware if the Toploader 75, which is designed to carry even more weight, also has plastic parts.
