(More customer reviews)The specifications of the Columbia Backcountry 8x42 binoculars include phase-coated and silver-coated prisms. These advanced coatings are typical of mid and higher range binoculars these days and are meant to improve sharpness, light transmission, and color fidelity. In the case of the Backcounty 8x42 - it's true that the binoculars are very bright and sharp, but the image lacks contrast and is much affected by veiling glare when angled toward the sun. Also, the focusing is extremely slow, with some backlash, making it difficult to find the precise point of focus.
Since the above was written, I've returned the binoculars to Kruger Optical under the warranty and have received a new replacement pair. The replacement does not have the focus problem described and even seems to be better optically, with more contrast. I can now recommend this model without reservation. The company's service has been exemplary and I couldn't be more pleased.
