(More customer reviews)I had to return this because when using a filter in conjunction with my Pentax 18-55mm kit lens, the hood caused moderate to severe vignetting up to about a 30mm focal length: this could not be avoided no matter what.
It can also cause slight vignetting by itself when you go down to 18mm. The problem is the lock ring, it is large enough to push the barrel and pedals into the field of view. If you remove the lock ring then you can screw the hood down far enough to be removed from view completely (but when using only the hood, still doesn't work with a filter attached). You do lose the ability to lock it down beyond movement, but it can go down plenty tight, enough so that normal usage would not affect the angle at all.
Since I have a Pentax lens, I decided to go with another option, an OEM alternative with a bayonet mount instead of a screw mount: http://www.amazon.com/Fotodiox-Pentax-Ph-Rba-18-55mm-3-5-5-6/dp/B003G5A2RW/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1275190218&sr=8-4
Having to unscrew the hood to use a filter was too cumbersome, especially since I could not have them on both at the same time. If you can get a hood with a bayonet mount then it would make life a lot easier. If you cannot, or cannot afford one, then this is an excellent budget option, with great build quality and security.

The main function of the lens hood is to shade the lens from stray light, improving your contrast and image quality. But it will also protects the front barrel from the inevitable impacts against walls, door frames, and other real-life obstacles and in inclement weather, it can assist in keeping moisture or wind-blown debris off the lens. The advantage of the petal shape design is, that it offers the same prevention of flare as the corresponding circular or rectangular design, but with a smaller size and a lighter weight. Installation: *Rotate lock-ring to expose the thread's mounting thread*Attach the hood by screwing it on the filter or lens thread.*Rotate lock-ring back to fix the hood on the thread.*While fixating the hood with the lock-ring, keep the " " symbol on the hood exactly at 12 o'clock position for the correct perpendicular orientation of the higher sides of the hood.
