(More customer reviews)When I set out to buy a pair of binoculars I did a bit of pricing first on-line. From what I could see, I would need to spend from $170 to $250 for an 'entry level' pair.
When trying them in person I noticed the Nikons in the case at a much lower price point. Although skeptical, I decided to try them just for a comparison. To my surprise, the Nikons were very bright and very sharp. I tried and tried to find some feature which would have made the pricier glasses (including other Nikons) a better choice for me, but I actually think the Action was better than the more expensive models.
Now, these are not small glasses. They are full-sized and not lightweight. They would not be very good travel glasses, and can be fatiguing after extended use. This fatigue issue means they might not be the best choice for serious birders, but then again serious birders probably are looking at an entirely different style of binocular anyway.
I've also read that many birders prefer a glass with a wider field of view. It *can* be difficult to spot a bird in the relatively narrow field, but once you find it these bright and sharp glasses really make it pop out. We use these constantly around the house for 'passive' bird watching and have taken them on short, local birding excursions as well.
If you want an affordable pair of binoculars with great performance the Action is a solid choice. I bought a pair for my sister, and she loves them, too.
