As far as on camera and related supplemental flash units are concerned, there is simply no better--nor easier to use-- units than those made by quantum. The Trio is great--use it with my Nikon 700 and 300S for portable lights at such venues as fashion shows (use in conjunction with a TR-5d) and the results are stunning. In fact, work that I've done for a major national retailer have led to numerous additional opportunities for modeling agencies, portfolio shoots, family and kids, etc.
For aspiring photographers, I've always given the same advise--buy the very best equipment that you can, including lights and learn how to use them in varying situations. Quantum is without question, very expensive. BUT, the flip side is that you will use this stuff for many years and get great results reliably over and over. On balance, high quality is lower cost in the long run and you will be afforded opportunities to get more work because of the quality of the results you produce with equipment in which you have high confidence and skill.
There are lots of people doing good work with lesser stuff but, as I noted above, get the best you can, even if it means waiting a while to do so.
Quantum equipment is simply the gold standard in portable on-camera and related flashes.
